Text below is transcribed from Ray Lederer's 2012 blogpost about Adam Adamowicz after Adam had passed away.
Both were artists on Skyrim and shared an office together. They were very very close.

-Tuesday, February 14, 2012
I first met Adam when I started working at a tiny game development studio in Boulder, Colorado back in 1998 called Devil’s Thumb Entertainment. I walked into the studio on my first day of work and I’m pretty sure The Cramps were playing full blast from his general direction. There he was, sun baked and surrounded with what at the time I assumed were rare Jaimie Hewlett sketches pasted up around him, loads of cds and flyers for rockabilly rollerderby raver chicks with squids on their heads. ‘Welcome to the monster factory!’ he said and I thought instantly ‘Oh hell yeah! I came to the right place!’ It didn’t take long to figure out that what I thought were Jaimie Hewlett drawings were actually his and to be quite honest were 10 times more appealing and hilarious. (No offense Jaimie!)
When I finally got the chance to see his apartment in Denver I realized I was stepping into the mind of a creative genius. His entire apartment from floor to ceiling, front to back was covered with his paintings, massive cardboard sculptural cat like gargoyles, christmas lights, intricate costumes (designed with little more than a leather jacket, cheap sombrero, toys from a thrift shop, black and silver spray paint and hot glue) flyers for previous rent parties from his old warehouse, Tank Girl comics, Low Rider and American Artist magazines, Thomas Pynchon novels and a constant stream of music. Every square inch was interesting and VITAL and ALIVE. This was an intellect far beyond anyone else I’d ever met and there was not a single hint of pretentiousness to him. His entire life was a beautifully structured and disciplined chaos. Even then I began to see that not only was I in the presence of greatness, I was in the presence of one of the more important illustrators of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He just didn’t know it yet and neither did anyone else. Quite frankly he wouldn’t give a shit if someone gave him that label. He simply wanted to come up with more ideas and get better at drawing. Period.
Since then we got into many beer soaked adventures that sometimes included late night bike rides through the city streets of Denver with a boom-box strapped to the back blasting Big Audio Dynamite with sparklers hanging off the handlebars(and some stiches on the scalp of yours truly). Dangerously drunken skateboarding with cap guns, ditching psychedelic parties to go laugh our asses off and throw giant rocks in a frozen river, concerts, weekend long patio surfing tours in the Colorado summers, trips to the reservoir to float around wearing finely crafted and thrilling 12pack headgear, lunchtime bike rides up to our favorite outdoor patio Rhumba in Boulder for $2 Red Stripes and then back to work again, and many hours working close to him and learning as much as I could about being an artist and a better human being. He once said to me “I may not be Mozart, but at least I can try to be the Pixies.” He just wanted to entertain people in any way he could.
In his last few days we spent together in the hospital we sat on his hospital bed listening to music for hours, talking, and drawing in our sketchbooks. Our conversations were tinted with what was happening for him in the moment certainly, but mostly we talked about friends, art, music, and life. We spoke without much nostalgia or finality, just very real and present and forward looking despite the circumstances. He kept drawing until he couldn't possibly draw anymore, squeezing every last ounce he could out of life, just as he always had.
Watch papa go to work.
I love you Adam. You continue to be my friend, mentor, and greatest inspiration

Neon Genesis Evangelion Soundtrack 25th Anniversary Box.
Composer: Shiro Sagisu.
King Amusement Creative, October 7 2020. KICA-2576, KICA-2577, KICA-2578, KICA-2579, KICA-2580. (Individual albums: KICA-286, 290, 300, 360, 370).
A box set containing 5 Audio CDs, inside a slipcase. Red CDs and transparent CD trays. The booklet reproduces those of the individual releases. An aditional booklet includes tracklists for all the CDs. A gatefold covered with images from the series holds the CD trays. MSRP $90 U.S.D.
There are a total of 120 tracks. (If you like Fly Me To The Moon, there are 20 different versions of it) XD
Overall, I have no complain about this box set: the quality of materials and printing is oustanding. It's also cheaper than the individual releases.
I bought this box set over a year ago. I've listened all the albums several times now. "The Heady Feeling of Freedom" and "Good, or Don't Be" remain among my favorite songs. Nostalgia hits hard with some versions of good old "Fly Me To The Moon".

Because it's my birthday I am going to share 23 random facts about me (that no one cares about except me, I care very much)
1. I was born in Okinawa, Japan. No I'm not Japanese, my mom was an accountant for the Air Force. And no, I don't remember anything about Japan; we moved back when I was six months old. The military broke into our apartment and forced us to leave the country because my mom criticized the Air Force for having religious programming on the government-funded radio station. She wrote a screenplay about it which has sadly never been sold :(
2. I've written over 2 million words of fiction, most of which you can read over on Archive of Our Own.
3. I was named for two typhoons that hit Japan around when I was born (first and middle name). Every year, we used to get horrible insane bad weather around my birthday. After I changed my birth name and kept only one of the typhoon names, we don't get bad weather anymore :)
4. I've lived in 10 different houses and three different time zones over my lifetime.
5. I won a Gilman Scholarship for the most competitive country in the program and got to study abroad in Stirling, Scotland, during undergrad. I got all As in my classes while there, despite the fact that I was dealing with repeated bouts of antispychotic-induced trismus where my jaw would lock open for up to six hours. It was ouchie.
6. Over my lifetime, I have kept dogs, cats, betta fish, koi fish, zebra finches, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, and chickens.
7. My favorite time of year is autumn.
8. Back in the early 2010s, I anonymously pretended to be Darren Criss (from Glee) in random peoples' inboxes, and I was so good at it that there was a theory that I was, indeed, Darren Criss. I eventually had to come clean about it because other people tried to copy me.
9. I also caused a controversy in the Sherlock fandom by Photoshopping Sherlock-related graffiti on a photo of the Baker Street Underground station. People literally thought someone was going around spraypainting the London Tube while I was comfortably at home in my apartment in Chicago.
10. While living in Chicago, I once found an iguana in a tree, in the middle of winter. Poor thing would have died if it was left out any longer. I captured it and gave it to my friend who kept reptiles; the original owner never came forward for it.
11. I have dyscalculia, meaning it's nigh-on impossible for me to do anything other than basic math.
12. Because of my dyscalculia, I can't read sheet music. Despite this, I was in choir and musicals because I had a good singing voice. To get around this, my teachers would give me CDs of the music, and I would learn everything by ear.
13. My first ever fannish hyperfixation was The Beatles. I used to roleplay Beatles RPF with my best friend by passing a notebook around between classes. My character had a whole city in North Carolina named after her, plus a lime green Bugatti Veyron and a mansion. Typical middle schooler power fantasy lmao
14. My favorite animal is the unicorn. Barring mythical creatures, my favorite animal is the cow.
15. I collect music boxes, specifically ones with moving parts. My favorite present anyone has ever given me is a singing bird music box with a little canary that dances while it sings.
16. I also collect vintage luggage. Look, it's a cooler storage system than tote boxes, ok??
17. I have been knitting since I was around 9. My favorite thing to make is socks, and the favorite project I've ever done is a seashell-patterned shawl for my mom.
18. In the summer, I love kayaking; in the winter, I love doing nothing whatsoever. Though I'm tempted to try cross-country skiing, ngl.
19. Last year, I made my first roombox; I'm now working on a three-story dollhouse. I also mod Nendoroids.
20. I've had nearly every hair color, which includes blonde, brunet, black, red, purple, teal, blue, green, and pink. My favorite is green.
21. I have seven tattoos, including the term "Mors ad Raptoribus" written across my chest. I got this one after being sexually assaulted; it means "Death to Rapists" in Latin. The other most important one is a portrait of my late dog Luke.
22. I like all sorts of music, including alt, indie, (some) folk, pop, metal, rap, blues, jazz, and classical. The only music I really don't like is gospel. If you ask me my favorite band, rest assured it'll change in about three weeks.
23. I'm a late bloomer horse girl. I rode a little bit as a child but was too broke to afford regular lessons. Now that I'm an Adult, I go riding once a week and wish I could go more!
Happy birthday to me! And yes, I am always this insufferable about myself on my birthday. Look I get one day a year ok

Isn't it odd Symphogear didn't get any normal length OAV or movie made, or even on the merch side more nendo or nendo petit made considering how popular it was in Japan? I know the fear was real with prods and manus during the first two seasons because they thought it was a fail project and didn't want to invest but after five seasons and five concerts? I don't know I feel like I'm missing data on why we were given the short stick compared to other popular animes...
Ah, I never really felt like that when it comes to the series (except for figures, but I get to that later in the post. I went on a bit of a tangent and it ended up longer than intended. Oops)
Five whole seasons
Four series of shorts
Enough character songs to have a box of 9 CDs released (doesn't include XDU songs)
Concerts that get released on blu-ray since G's (this one just feels like a bigger deal to me because season 1's in 2012 never got recorded or released)
A mobile game that's been running for 6 years and gets its own albums separate from the aforementioned box (there was another mobile game a decade ago that died pretty fast but nobody remembers that one, shhh...)
And a monthly spinoff manga that has enough content for four volumes so far
...All feels like a miracle to me, especially for an anime not based on an existing manga, game, or light novel
Seriously, I love this series but I have no idea how G was greenlit
I'm still waiting to see what the new project is because there's still a possibility that it could be a movie or something. I just don't expect it anytime soon, whether it be a movie or an OVA, because Kaneko (co-creator and scenario writer for the series) is busy both designing and writing a RPG which he stated was something he wanted to do while not working on Symphogear since he was too busy to work on games while he was doing that (link is Japanese, but it's the interview where he said that)
Which, again, is probably why the new project is dated 20XX
Now if I were to talk about stuff I personally would want?
If it's a movie I'd like it to be completely new content but if they make some lengthier OVAs, I've been asking for an adaptation of 3.5 from XDU for a while since the Alexandria Incident gets mentioned in AXZ.
Tumblr media
XDU's service isn't going to last forever and I'd hate to lose a canon side story like that when it does eventually end.
They could also do 4.5 but it isn't as high a priority for me because it serves more as an introduction to Noble Red than anything and outside of the short part between Fine and Enki, it felt weird coming out after XV ended
On a bit of a side note, I've said it before, but I wouldn't be too surprised if any new anime content is by Studio KAI instead of Satelight. A LOT of Symphogear's staff moved over there after XV ended which is why XDU's second OP was done by them.
youtube
Now merchandise, oh boy, yeah that subject has stung a bit over the years. The fact the only Nendos are from S1 really is sad
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They want their friends to join them
Heck, Chris didn't even get a Figma back then like Hibiki and Tsubasa did
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can't believe it took as long as it did for Kirika, Shirabe, and Maria to get figures. Especially Maria, who didn't have one released until 2022.
And it is an actual crime that Miku still doesn't have one despite being around since season 1. That is Hibiki's Wife Sunshine y'all are ignoring. (Season 1 Miku with green hair when? 🤣)
Hobby Stock's set of scale figures they've been releasing and Good Smile's ACT MODEs are a step in the right direction though. There's also been more plushes in recent years which I personally really love.
One of my wishes is someone going back to G and making figures for that so we can get Black Gungnir Maria or Shenshoujing Gear Miku
The parallel world versions of everyone from XDU would be fun too but I'm not pushing my luck there. The other Hibiki technically already has one but it used an existing Hibiki figure as a base
Tumblr media
And yes, I am begging for a game that isn't gacha. I'm a lover of action games and RPGs so I would love something along those lines. I'm not horribly picky about the specific type

10th Anniversary
f(x): Pink Tape (2013.07.29)
Pink Tape is a gold standard of an album, not just for K-pop, but for pop music in general. It has been named the Greatest K-pop Album of the 2010s by Billboard in 2019, and its lead single "Cheot Sarangni (Rum Pum Pum Pum)" was ranked #59 on its general "100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time" list in 2017. Pink Tape is the type of album that other pop stars are still trying to emulate years after its release, and is the source of my oft-repeated refrain that "f(x) did it first” (see also, Red Light and 4 Walls).
The album was released exactly ten years ago in the summer of 2013, when the K-pop girl group was at is peak, and when, I would argue, K-pop itself had reached the very edge of its Golden Age plateau from which it would begin a kind of wandering, sporadic descent. Almost every single song on here sounds as fresh and exciting as it did ten years ago. Like much of their previous work, the album is full of quirky upbeat, pop songs that incorporate everything from dance, to disco, to rap, to hip-hop, to electro, to an almost avant-garde selection of instruments against the synthetic keyboards that comprise the bulk of the album's sound. The album does have one or two places where it falters a bit, in the obligatory ballad selections, which sound like any SM group could have done competently, like "Goodbye Summer" (co-written by member Amber) or "Yeou Gateun Nae Chingu (No More)" which sounds like something picked up from the cutting room floor of Girls’ Generation’s SNSD's Oh! album. But there are so many songs on here that only f(x) could pull off, like "Pretty Girl" and "Kick." The album is just sublime, and even songs that I don't particularly find myself returning to, I can appreciate. It's the type of song selection that works best as an entire album, illuminating the group's eclectic make up, both physically and musically, in their innovative, ground-breaking sound.
The packaging on this is super fun: it comes in a box that's shaped and designed to look like a pink, oversized VHS tape. The box opens up to reveal a type of OBI that wraps around the back and spine of the box, a booklet of the same height and size as the box, and the CD, along with one of a set of collectible photo cards, and some promo material. The pictures in the booklet are designed to look like stills from a "romantic, cult" teen flick, including "subtitled" captions on many of them that read more like random poetry than a cohesive narrative. It all adds to the fun and mystique of this album -- and I think it's clever and weirdly accurate to use the term "cult" to describe this album and group, as even though f(x) was mega-popular, they were still the somewhat quirkier, alternative sister-group to SM Entertainment's flagship girl-group Girls’ Generation (SNSD).

tired but i cant sleep so im postingggggggg
me and my pack (which we call ourselves as mostly a joke) did a secret santa/christmas party a couple days ago! ofc bc i (and a few others) have 0 chill, i got/made everyone a few gifts. when it comes to giving gifts, ESPECIALLY handmade ones, i get... nervous to say the least. but never fear! everyone had really good reactions to the gifts i gave! which im gunna list using "code names", which is lightly unnecessary but fun
Been There Done That: so i got him this tinnyyyyy lil keychain he asked for. its from a small artist we both like, she draws these cute lil girls with fruit themes and then make a moldy version of it! (@/feefal on insta) i also went through a bag of starbursts and gave him the pink and red ones cuz he only likes those and a lavender candle. the best gift, however, was a framed picture of our other friends ass :3 he laughed so fucking hard i was so so so happy he found it funny
Wheezer: i crocheted it a brown and green star crossbody bag! its lined with grey flannel fabric and has a phone pocket. unfortunately the strap was a little too long but i think he's gunna hem it. i also gave him a moon projector and a wasteland baby! hozier cd. it screamed when he saw the cd lol
The Ass: this beloved friend got some of my old lace chokers that i can't wear (aversion to things around my neck), a dog enrichment bowl, and some bracelets i made. i am REALLY proud of these bracelets. he has osdd and has 4 alters including himself (host) so i made 4 bracelets. each ine was specifically made to match how i perceive each alter and has a corresponding playing card charm (ace of hearts, queen of diamonds, king of clubs, and the joker) when i gave him the bracelets he got super excited and hugged me superrrr hard. the joker bracelet has a vivid warm color pallet using chip beads and round brass beads, the staple r 2 tiny silver dragonfly beads i found. the queen of diamonds is a mixture of these gorgeous maroon round beads and obsidian beads with a little bit of gold metal beads. the ace of hearts was almost entirely rose quartz round beads with a heart shaped one in the middle, two oblong opalite beads frame the card charm. finally the king of clubs is garnet and obsidian ship beads with a LOT of misc metal beads and a red evil eye bead.
Bird Brain: OK OK OK OK ok i am SO proud of myself on these gifts cuz im pretty sure they LOVED them. first i gave him a shirt, which is technically from Been There Done That, but we had argued about who git to keep the shirt when he was auctioning it off (i tried to let them have it and they tried to let me have it). They tried to give it back but i guilted him into keeping it :3. second i got him a stuffed lamb. pretty average right? WRONG! i found the exact same lamb stuffie that they had as a child and lost. so ofc i bought it, painstakingly hand washed it for a couple hours (we both have contamination paranoia so i HAD to make it CLEAN), slept with it sitting on my pillow for a few nights until the party (so it wuldnt get lonely in the box) and gave it to him. their reaction scared me for a second, cuz all they said was "it's my lamb" and stared blankly at it for a good few minutes. i realized pretty quickly that it was the opposite of a bad look, so that was a problem solved quickly. around the lambs neck were a couple bracelets i also made, one with bloodstone beads and a black evil eye and the other with purple goldstone beads, obsidian beads, amethyst chips, and a skull charm. the last gift was specifically tailored to their special interest and im SO PROUD OF MYSELF FOR THINKING OF IT and actually executing it well. i bought a hunting knife with a wooden handle so i culd carve a special lil symbol into it. the knife is called a godkiller knife from the slenderverse series everyman hybrid, it belongs to HABIT. when i tell u he SQUEALED and started stimming so hard i thought theyd fall over /hyp. we're on a trip rn and they brought the knife and lamb so id say i did good? i also actually have a plan to hand make them smth fun soon but he doesnt know what it is so shhhhhh im not saying it here :3
( @yourlocalcorvidcryptid )
Miss(ter) Peregrine: i feel horrible about it but im still not done with his gift. im crocheting him a blanket out of acrylic yarn in the shape of a star (hell evil satan) so i got him some other stuff to make up for it. i gave him some small rocks, magnetic bookmarks, and a green bracelet that matches his eyes all stuffed in an empty pill bottle. i also gave him some stickers and packing tape :) he was pretty chill about everything, he loved the blanket and was fawning over how pretty the bookmarks are so i think he liked it all.
( @pumpkinnsoda )
2D: this motherfucker was my secret santa so i got their ass a LOT. i got him a pair of crocs that have a light blue and beige marble that i knew he'd love cuz hes been talking about wanting crocs forEVER. i also got them 6 weed charms, 2 eggplant charms, and 2 Trolls charms from the Trolls 3 movie, for the sake of humor. additionally i got them weed print socks, which i used to hide the fact that i also got him a new underworks chest binder. he's been super needing an actually good binder so im estatic this one worked. i got them a bag of their favorite chocolate as a fun lil treat too. finally i also crocheted them a star bag! i used yarn they picked out and didnt have time to line it unfortunately :( but i think i made up for it with other stuff!!
Bagel Boys Dundundundun Bagel Boys Dundundundun Bagel Boys Dundundundun With Cream Cheese: SO IM ALSO REALLY PROUD OF ONE SPECIFIC GIFT IN THIS BATCH. i made it a sweater which was not crocheted, unfortunately. i was *shudder in horror* hand sewing a jack-o-lantern face into it. i don't think i did super well, much to my dismay. its ok i can make it up by making them smth else later on. i gave them a tiny little wooden turtle that i found since they really like ninja turtles. i gave it some earring making supplies that it asked for a while back. and lastly, my pride and joy, i got them the official wings of fire guidebook, hardcover. now this book contains 2 of the best things in the WORLD: dragons and world-building. from what ive seen my dearest friend has lost their SHIT over this book. theyve been reading it very slowly so as to savor it. its face when i gave it the book was BEAUTIFUL their jaw was DROPPED
( @astronomical-bagel )
Nyan Cat: ok last one! i gave them a pair of crocs as well, that i had them pick out while we were in the store together. they chose black and got like 4 cute lil charms (that i dont remember). i also gave them a pearl choker with fake blood dripping from it. i wore it to my prom but will never wear it again and i knew theyd LOVE it. i didnt get a chance to make anything for them, but i do eventually wanna crochet them a strawberry bag lined with very gothic fabric, as is their aesthetic LMAO
( @salemsmushroom )
ok thats all :3

Long-delayed studio pics for @sarasa-cat, focused on decor.
I kept thinking I'd wait 'til it was clean, and I DID clean parts, but by the time I cleaned one part the rest was messy again. I didn't ever sit down and think about decor (as you can probably tell!).
The Side Desk of Crap Accumulation holds such decorative objects as 'cardboard box of CDs I'm slowly ripping' and 'folded blanket for the cat.' (The origami balloons ARE part of a decor project; I'm putting them on a string of lights to festoon... somewhere). The cork/whiteboard behind is the one I already happened to have. At this point the cork side is basically holding art from friends and neighbors (a neighbor painted a rose in my yarden and brought me the picture!). The whiteboard side is the to-do list.
The fiddling/step-dancing sheep a dear friend gave me when she downsized, because it made me laugh... then last week I realized that I still had the green sheep painting I did, so I hung it up, too. But mine is an alien. Usually that blank space has a calendar but it'll likely get some more art.
The view with the viola and fiddle and thermostat is my background in virtual meetings, and if I'd KNOWN that would be a thing I'd have put the thermostat somewhere else, argh. I love having the instruments there though, and I think they're the prettiest thing in the room. The prints next to them are from successful local artist Mimi Williams who did a series of one-color poetry prints and sold 'em for pennies because she wanted normal people to be able to buy art. I think the poems are by her family members? I included a close-up because I love them.
The big-ass mirror with the overly-ornate frame is more a tool than decor, for pose reference, but I threw it up there too. It's suspended from the ceiling with seriously heavy-duty picture wire, because the back of the chimney is behind it and drilling would require a masonry bit and probably crack the sparging. (BTW, that chimney is painted a completely neutral gray -- had the store color-match a gray card, then added pure white 'til it wasn't oppressive).
The lil' antique table is my partner's workspace. The painting behind the monitor is one I painted for him years ago. I'm still really happy with it so I'm glad it's there.
The drafting-table corner isn't exactly decorated so much as storing art and reference things, but I'm really happy I finally got the corkboard up. I like seeing my silly lil' watercolors up there, and it gets at least some paper (like watercolor test squares) off the drafting table. The tarp-like thing is a drop cloth my parents painted snowflakes on and used as the wrapping when they gave me a giant metal rolly toolbox for art supplies once; I've been using it as a curtain since. :P The paintings are there for want of better storage. The top one is an oil painting I really want to finish someday (but haven't touched in, uh, years?). The red columbine study was supposed to be an underpainting but I kinda liked it so it's just sitting there not sure if it's done. The crow-on-green is the opposite — it's supposed to be finished, but I kinda don't like it and it's hanging up there while I decide what to do with it.

Olivia had Jake wrapped around her tiny little finger and you knew it would only be moments before he gave in.' When his daughter says those five words, Jake can't say no.
Jake x reader, 1.3k words. Features Dad!Jake + I suppose major character death, but nothing violent/harmful. For those with anxiety (like myself), the ending is a bit sad in a way, so I wanted to put that in a warning. Enjoy this Dad!Jake fic. 🧡
You stood in front of the doll section at the toy store, massaging your temples, wondering you decided to take your six-year-old daughter shopping. It had already been a long day but you had talked your husband into to going with you, claiming 'you can help keep her under control.'
"Mommy, Papa said I could get this doll," the young girl said.
"Olivia, we told you how much you can spend," you told her. "That's too much."
Olivia turned around to face you and Jake with her bright brown eyes wide.
"But mommy, I want it!" she shouted as she stomped her foot. Jake could tell that a tantrum was about to go down. "Papa, tell mommy I want this one!"
You glared up at Jake before he could say anything. Olivia had Jake wrapped around her tiny little finger and you knew it would only be moments before he gave in.
Jake sighed before replying to his daughter, "Liv, you have one just like it at home.”
"Papa, but I love it so much," she whined, the signature Kiszka pout making its way across her features.
"Fine, put it in the cart, Liv," Jake replied, unable to look at you. He knew that you’d be upset, but Jake just couldn't say no to his little girl.
———
"Olivia Marie, you have ten seconds to be out of that bed and getting ready for school," you shouted as you packed her lunch.
"Moooooom," she shouted back. "I don't wanna go today. You know that my favorite band is coming to town for their cd signing! Where's Papa? He promised he would take me."
Jake looked at you before beginning to stand up from the kitchen table.
"Jacob, don't you dare go into her room," you scolded. "She is going to school today."
As Jake sat back down, their 13-year-old daughter walked into the kitchen still in her pajamas.
"Papa, didn't you promise you would take me to meet him?" Olivia stared at Jake hoping to sway him. "He promised me that when they ca-"
"Olivia, you are not going, you are going to school," you interrupted.
"It's not fair! Papa, I love them so much," she whined.
Jake took a deep breath and before he knew it, he was calling his daughter off of school.
———
Five years later, the Kiszkas were packing the last box into the car and heading to drop Olivia off at college. When they reached her dorm, they began unpacking and organizing all of her things. Jake opened a box labeled, "things I need" and pulled out the doll they had bought twelve years prior.
"Liv, what did you bring this for?" Jake asked, looking at his daughter. Olivia's fair skin was now bright red and a sheepish smile graced her lips.
"I couldn't leave home without it," she whispered.
Jake's heart raced with happiness. His little girl was finally growing up, but he didn't want to let her go. Jake sat the doll on the bed before turning back to the box. Three hours later, the last box was unpacked. Jake turned to Olivia, his face turning into the 'listen to me I have an important speech' face.
"Okay, here is our card for emergencies only. What are emergencies?" Jake stated.
"If I need food or am stuck somewhere."
"Olivia," you began. "We're very proud of you and you're an adult now, so we trust you. Don't make us regret this."
"I won't, mama," she smiled. "Papa, does that include records?"
Jake's eyes went narrow before softening. "No, Olivia."
"But Papa, what if I don’t have it? What if I love them so much?"
You rolled his eyes before huffing away to pick up the trash on the floor. You knew Jake would give into her.
"Call us before you buy them," he sighed.
He never could say no to her.
———
"Sir, dinner was delicious, thank you," Olivia's boyfriend, Carter, said. They had been together for five years and you and Jake really did like him. Olivia excused herself from the table and cleared the dishes before running to her room.
"Um, I was wondering if I could talk to both of you," Carter said, a nervous tone over his voice.
You and Jake looked at the boy, who looked like he was about to throw up and was shaking with nerves.
"Everything okay, Carter?" you asked, taking Jake's hand in yours.
"Oh, yeah. Everything's fine. I, uh, I just wanted to ask you for permission to marry Olivia."
Jake squeezed your hand, a sure sign he needed you at this moment. He couldn't believe it. He knew one day that this time would come, but he didn't want his little girl to be gone yet. You squeezed Jake's hand three times, a silent way of saying ‘I Love You’ and Jake turned to face you. Both of you had tears in your eyes, both coming to the realization that your little girl was a no longer little. You gave Jake a nod and Jake returned the same to you before you both looked at Carter again.
"Do you love her?" you asked.
"Yes, I love her with all my heart," Carter replied. The loving tone said everything you needed to hear. But before you said yes, Jake got up from the table and headed to his daughter's room.
"Liv," he called before knocking. "Can I ask you something?"
The door opened to his 24-year-old daughter sitting in her childhood bedroom.
"Sure Papa. What's up?" Olivia responded with a big grin.
"Do you love Carter?"
"I love him so much, Papa."
Jake wrapped his arms around his daughter before the tears in his eyes could fall. With those words, he knew he was done. He kissed her on the top of the head before he whispered, "you'll always be my little girl, you know that?”
Jake let go and headed back to the dining room where he was met with you smiling brightly and a nervous future son-in-law.
"It would be our honor to call you our son," Jake said before reaching to shake Carter’s hand and pulling him in for a hug. He brought his mouth close to whisper in Carter’s ear, "take care of my little girl."
———
Years and years had passed, spring turned to summer, summer to fall. Olivia walked into the home of her ailing father, knowing that not much time was left with him. She walked up the steps, past the room she grew up in and into her parents' room.
"Liv," you said, patting the seat next to him.
"Hi mama, how's Papa?" Olivia reached out to grab Jake's hand and holding it into her own
"Not good," you whispered. "He told me he doesn't think it will be much longer."
"Papa, it's me," she said trying to hold back her tears. "I'm here."
Jake's eyes opened and a small smile was forming on his lips.
"Olivia, I think it's time, I wanted to talk to you one last time. I just want you to know that you were the greatest joy in me and your mother’s life. You have brought us so much happiness. I love you with all my heart," Jake gasped out the final words and his eyes closed for the final time.
"Papa, please don't go. I love you so much," she shouted through the tears.
It was the only time Jake said no.

Review of the Music Tapes performance, Daily Hampshire Gazette, 29 July 1999
transcript:
KEN MAIURI Clubland
a Magical Musical tour with the Music Tapes
I wish I could write the way the Music Tapes play music: with joy, endless creativity, and utter abandon. The experimental pop quintet from Athens, Ga. played Flywheel in Easthampton Tuesday, and though I left the show feeling dreamy and elated, now it’s 1:30 a.m. and I’m bleary in front of a computer screen. Wrestling with my pitiful usage of adverbs and adjectives. Trying unsuccessfully to describe the genius beauty of the group’s performance.
Maybe I should start with a quick tour of the Music Tapes’ fantastic landscape (also known as their stage setup). That giant hand-painted wooden rocket you see in the back is the seven-foot-tall wind-up metronome. Over to the right is the big blue wooden box with clapping hands out of the top — just raise the handle on the side of the box and they’ll clap. And here by the main microphones are two small pallets covered in amplified chicken wire, called “Landing Pads” — people jump up and down on those to make drum-like noises: Finally, right up front is Static. He’s a television with a face. He’s also a singing, full-time member of the group, Now you know your way around.
You can call these handmade contraptions gimmicks, but they’re integral to the world of the Music Tapes (even when they’re a little annoying and unnecessary, like that bulky and often inaudible metronome). The band, led by Julian Koster, exists as a way to play with the lines between fantasy and reality. As he once said in an interview, “When you’re a kid, you have all these dreams and this innate understanding of the universe, but you don’t have the skills to create things. Now, if you decided, you want a 50-foot talking cloud in your backyard, you can create it, and all of a sudden that’s a part of other people’s reality.” Hence the Mechanized Organ-playing Helmet and Static the Performing Television.
The band’s wild creativity transformed the “normal” elements of the performance, too. For example, the group’s sound was mainly built around the banjo (no electric or acoustic guitar in sight), which Koster strummed with electric guitar force or scraped with a violin bow. The instrumentation also included pump organ, bass guitar, trumpet, tuba, musical saw, melodica, toy piano, a couple of Walkman radios and even a bouncy red dodgeball. All of these things were perfect for making a racket, but just as often the Music Tapes used them to create weirdly beautiful harmony, with combinations of textures and simple but unconventional melodies that would’ve had “Pet Sounds”-era Brian Wilson smiling.
As striking as the band’s music often was, the Music Tapes had me hooked thanks to the passion with which they performed it. Believe me, they’re not writing songs like “March of the Father Fists” to make a buck — they’ve got their hearts invested in this quirky, personal material. Koster in particular sang emotionally at the top of his lungs, and early in the show jumped so hard and high on the chicken wire pallets that the stuff ripped beneath his sneakers. At one point during the set there were two smiling, sweaty band members pouncing pell-mell on the Landing Pads while another guy whipped the crank around on the metronome and the fourth guy played a sample of a train chugging — it was happy visual and aural chaos (and, for some reason, it reminded me of something out of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”).
The band’s powerful, bizarre, and tuneful wave of sound was strongest on songs like “The Clapping Hands,” “Nomad Tell Us,” and “The Television Tells Us,” all of which can be found on the band’s debut CD, “1st Imaginary Symphony for Nomad.” BUT WE WARNED: the “studio” versions are drastically different, low-fi and sludgy to the extreme, containing virtually none of the vivid, full arrangements that the band created at Flywheel. The CD — recorded in various places over the span of four years — is a concept album that works fine on its own, but it pales in comparison to what the Music Tapes can create live, in person.
Which reminds me, they’re available to play your house, backyard, barn or fields. That’s not a joke. (The band subtitles itself “The Orbiting Human Circus,” with the motto, “The Greatest Show IS Earth.”) Look in their album liner notes for details, but the Music Tapes invite you to invite them to bring their life-affirming Imaginary Symphony to your neighbourhood. They may even bring a 50-foot talking cloud.

Writing Initiative #3
Make a list of items you’d like to discuss with the group, possibly including:
Which deliverable (3D, 4D, Experimental, Reflective Piece) you are focused on for next week’s presentation concepts to date
Materials and potential media labs to visit and connect with
Failures and successes
Given your topic, which of the four assignments you fear/anticipate the most difficult
I would like to further explore my 3D and 4D pieces in a way that connects them together to create a narrative about fate between two destined souls. For the 3D piece, I hope to utilize materials I have at home to bring the red string theory to life. As mentioned, the red string will be a constant element that I will be working with. Another material I considered using is clear boxes or cases, such as CD covers, Ferrero Rocher chocolate boxes, or any other materials I have at home to hold the red string. Another material I can use is resin to create a clear cube with a floating string.
Despite the fact that the invisible string is all over the place, the clear case represents the universe in a sense. Bounding the red string into one place easily depicts the concept on a smaller scale as this invisible string is all over the place.
I believe the most challenging assignment that I fear is the 4D assignment. At the moment, I currently have no ideas on what I can do with the red string in a four-dimensional way. In the next few discussions, I hope to receive more feedback or ideas on what I can do

Album Review: The Beatles "1962-1966 (‘The Red Album’) and 1967-1970 (‘The Blue Album’) 2023 Edition
Earlier this month, the mother of all gifts to fans of The Beatles was delivered: a new never-before-released song with "Now and Then" containing John Lennon’s 1979 recording combined with George Harrison’s 1994 recordings (when they attempted to record it for The Beatles Anthology) with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr’s modern day recording. This should be the big huge news, but the good news didn't end there. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of their 1973 compilation albums 1962-1966 (The Red Album) and 1967-1970 (The Blue Album), both are being re-released in a newly remastered deluxe expanded edition with new remixes and additional tracks. Like a lot of the recent Beatle reissues, these were remixed by producer Giles Martin. I was lucky enough to review the anniversary editions of The White Album in 2018, Abbey Road in 2019, Let It Be reissue. and last year's Revolver.

2023 edition
By 1973, The Beatles had been broken up for a few years leaving on the high note of Let It Be (the last released Beatles album, not the last recorded). Each of their solo careers were in full swing. Released on April 2, 1973 both albums were double albums bringing together some of their best hits. There had been other compilations prior and since, notably the 2000 comp 1, made up of all their songs that went to #1 on the Billboard singles chart. But the Red and the Blue albums (as they became known as) were unique in that they were curated like a fan playlist with some deep cuts interspersed with obvious hits. In the 1980s, I first listened to my older sister's cassette tapes of these albums. I was always intrigued by the two album covers of the Fab Four in the exact same position in the staircase five years apart. In 1993, they were released on CD for the first time and I got them that holiday season! I've listened to these compilations I don't even know how many times over the years.

"Now and Then" single
With these new releases, they have expanded upon the original track listing and added more songs to both compilations. The version I got to review was the vinyl box, both albums are triple disc. All of the songs have received a new stereo mix from Giles Martin, except for some from recent reissues from the last six years. Some notable changes include replacing "Love Me Do" with the version with Ringo Starr on drums instead of the Alan White version previously on here, "Tomorrow Never Knows", "Within You Without You" and the inclusion of the new single "Now and Then". I know, I know - the haters are going to say "how does this belong with the pantheon of greatest hits if it just came out?", but it is a great song and you can't help but feel touched by John singing to his former friend and bandmate and having Paul playing on it as well as George and Ringo. I think the technology has evolved to the point where this feels very different than "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" with when The Beatles Anthology was released in the 90s. No song - no matter how good it is - is going to live up to the expectation of "The Final Song by The Beatles". To tell you the truth I don't even know that it is nearly as good as I think it is, but it is a cause for celebration to have all of the Fab Four on a new song that sounds organic and natural in 2023. Not something you get too often as a Beatle fanatic!

Harrison, Starr, McCartney and Lennon in Peter Jackson's "Now and Then" music video
If you already have the Red and Blue albums in your collection you're probably wondering why you should re-buy this. But I think the sound quality (especially on vinyl) is quite noteworthy. As are the liner notes. Of course I'm a big fan who has always loved these compilations so it's no surprise I loved the 2023 editions, but it is monumental to have these on vinyl remastered and expanded!
