Posted @withrepost • @thewintersgroup Almost everyone gets white privilege wrong. “I’m not privileged! I’m not rich. I’ve struggled to put food on the table. I haven’t had it easy. My parents are working class! I’ve never inherited anything.” Now, if you’re white, you may have thought something similar. I can pretty much guarantee that white privilege is not what you thought it was. White privilege is, by definition, the benefit of being white. So, what does being rich, struggling through life, or not inheriting anything have to do with whiteness? Nothing. For white people, none of those things has anything to do with the color of their skin. Which begs the question, why are so many people getting this wrong? Chapter 34 of QUIETING THE CLOCK is a compelling, powerful story of a teen girl born with half of a heart called HLHS, along with 4 other Congenital Heart Defects. Her invisible disability consumes her life and destroys her mental health, with no break as she is abused repeatedly, some weeks every single night, for 11 years.
Modeling was one of her outlets, and gave her an ounce of self esteem, until Modeling Agents told rejected her due to her heart surgery scars and varicose veins.
Only a few local modeling stores allowed her to represent their clothing, and even then - had to be covered from head to toe and dressed so differently from the other girls, as in excerpt and photo below.

We deserve to be in Ads, Commercials, TV Shows and Movies as much as health / able-bodied people, to show our future children, teens, and adults that IT'S OKAY TO HAVE A "FLAWED" BODY. In fact, it should be the new norm.

First celebrated in 2012, Non-Binary People's Day is a day to celebrate those who identify as non-binary: someone who doesn't identify exclusively as a man or woman but rather both a man and a woman, in-between, or completely outside of those categories.

Make no mistake ☝️: many are asked to serve on every diversity committee across the organization as the token Native, Black, LGBTQ, Asian or Latinx person. While it is extremely important to center their perspectives in this work, a lack of diversity within an organization means that a few people carry the weight of facilitating change. When DEI work is not directly tied to the position employees were hired for, it most often becomes unpaid labor while also taking a significant amount of time and energy. 👉This all-too-common scenario can lead to feelings of tokenization, quick burnout and decreased productivity in areas directly related to their position and career advancement. 🗣 If we would not expect white men to work for free or take on additional labor without some trade-offs, why then do we expect this of people of color and women?"
