India likely to benefit from fund for climate-vulnerable | India News
Tumblr media
SHARM-EL-SHEIKH: Seeking to minimise devastating impacts of climate change, the COP27 presidency has launched the Sharm-elSheikh Adaptation Agenda outlining 30 goals to enhance resilience for four billion people living in the most climate vulnerable communities by 2030. India having vast coastlines and other vulnerable areas will also be benefited from this move. The presidency sought to mobilise $140 billion to $300billion through both public and private sources annually to pursue goals which include transitioning to climate resilient, sustainable agriculture that can increase yields by 17% and reduce farm level greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 21%, without expanding agricultural frontiers, and while improving livelihoods of farmers. Collectively, these outcomes represent the first comprehensive global plan to rally both state and non-state actors behind a shared set of adaptation actions that are required by the end of this decade. These actions will be taken across five impact systems: food and agriculture; water and nature; coastal and oceans; human settlements, and infrastructure. They will include enabling solutions for planning and finance across these sectors. “We are determined to develop a governance arrangement that secures continuity in scope, priorities, and reporting, while increasing action on the ground that accelerates system interventions, and the adaptation and resilience outcome targets identified by the High-Level Champions,” said COP27president and Egypt’s minister of foreign affairs Sameh Shoukry while launching the Agenda on Tuesday. The 30 adaptation outcomes under the agenda also include bringing 2,000 of the world's largest companies on board to integrate physical climate risk and develop actionable adaptation plans, and investing $4 billion to secure the future of 15 million hectares of mangroves. Spread over India and Bangladeshthe Sundarban region, home to 7. 2 million of the world’s most vulnerable people and the single largest mangrove forest in the world, will benefit from the adaptation efforts. India’s environment minister Bhupender Yadav while speaking at the launch of the Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC) on the sidelines of COP27 on Tuesday said: “We see the tremendous potential mangroves have for mitigation of growing GHG concentration in the atmosphere. Studies have shown that mangrove forests can absorb four to five times more carbon emissions than landed tropical forests”. Source link Read the full article

If India wants to use Western insurance, price cap would apply: US treasury secretary Yellen | India News
Tumblr media
WASHINGTON: “We want Russian oil to continue to supply global markets; stay on the market. But we want to make sure that Russia doesn’t profit unduly from the war by enjoying prices that are essentially very high due to the war,” US treasury secretary Janet Yellen told PTI in an exclusive interview on Monday ahead of her trip to India later this week. India’s oil purchase from Russia and the Ukrainian invasion is expected to be significant topics of discussion during her India trip, where Yellen is travelling to primarily co-chair the US-India Economic and Financial Partnership (EFP) dialogue along with Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman. “Our objective is to hold down the price that Russia receives for its oil and keep that oil trading. The gainers from this will be particularly those countries that do buy cheap Russian oil, and our hope would be that India would take advantage of this price cap, though its firms are bargaining with Russia,” Yellen said. “If they (India) want to use Western financial services like insurance, the price cap would apply to their purchases. But even if they use other financial services, we believe the price cap will give them leverage to negotiate good discounts from world markets. We would hope to see India benefiting from this programme,” the treasury secretary told PTI in response to a question. India, which imports nearly 85% of its fuel requirement, until March imported just 0.2% of all oil requirements from Russia. Russia now makes up for 22% of India’s total crude imports, ahead of Iraq’s 20.5% and Saudi Arabia’s 16%. Agencies Source link Read the full article
