Sorry if this is unwanted but if I could recommend one comic to read for Roy Harper I'd say the Arsenal (1998) mini. It's only 4 issues long so it's quick to read, and he's a really interesting character and I love him a lot :)

I just finished reading it! That was fun! I can already tell from it why people love Roy so much. I'm not usually a fan of this art style, but it grew on me! This is my fav panel:

I can't speak for how good the Navajo representation is (and I think it's fair to be cautious with anything Devin Grayson writes, lol) but I do enjoy that it's explored so thoroughly since I hadn't a clue Roy had that heritage before. Arguably it did feel excessive at times though.

Synopsis: When illegal fires on a Pantanal forest end up driving away an entire indigenous community out of it's land, the sisters Tai and Ari see themselves forced to take different paths to the fight for survival of their people, their tribe and their lives. With the help of a powerful being, the Enchanted, they follow their separate journeys against powerful men that try to colonize their land, at the same time that they desperatedly try to meet again.

I can't stress enough how important it is to incentivize projects like this, this isn't made by a company it's by passionate people that want to do something wonderful and bring attention and humanization to the real indigenous people affected by the fires to their land in this country, who are always treated as an after thought. It's clear by the art how much passion and talent went into this, we don't have that much teaching of animation on the country(with only two colleges that teach it as a course in the entire country, most animators i've know and myself included are self taught) so something to this level of quality is absolutely fantastic and deserves to be supported or at the very least seen!!!

seeing some people's reaction to weird gamer men oversexualizing kiriko is "mauga is right there, half naked, with serveral pin-up sprays" and while i do agree to an extent, i do feel like alot of people are kind of ignoring like. the racial element of mauga's sexualization, like i like mauga, he's hot, but the second i saw him in the short story, i wasn't a big fan of the whole "big savage brown indigenious guy" and it feels like very few people are pointing that out.

RIGHT LIKE. we cannot fix "gamer men fixate on fictional asian girls to a violent degree, usually in a racist way or enabling racist tropes already present in the character" with "gamer girls fixate on fictional brown men to a violent degree in a racist way or enabling racist tropes present in the character" like you guys are part of the same problemmmmmmm youre doing the same thinggg its not better because youre doing it to men like.

i think some people only want to see the kiriko problem as misogyny and while im not going to even pretend that ISNT a massive part of it, theres still like. a reason kiriko and d.va and mei are fascinations for these dudes. there is a pointed difference between the way these three get spoken about compared to their white counterparts (and their dark-skinned counterparts too - look at the responses to illari for a really easy comparison to how kiriko is treated). their ~exoticism~ as asian women is part of the appeal. even if you dont just wanna take the way dudes online treat them (like making a joke that shes "obvious pornbait" for speaking japanese and using JSL) as evidence of that, look at their marketing. kirikos whole thing is atheleisure traditional, shes got her Mystical Japanese Spiritualism Ninja Powers and her magic doggy and they constantly put her in japanese and korean fashion, and dva has been constantly crossing over with korean merch companies. i cant help but notice theres no brazilian IP crossovers or merch launches for lucio, or any attempt to Sell Peru To Gamers for illari. they couldnt even pick a town in Samoa to name maugas map after. these people wouldn't buy that stuff because it's not fetishized in the same way asia is.

but like. a lot of the people trying to Gotcha these racist dudes with an asian fetish just whip out their favourite racist tropes instead and its a really bad look. like you guys dont wanna examine how your examples of The Characters Its Okay To Hypersexualize are all brown? even the people who wanna fuck cassidy dont talk about him like this. or like. fuck if you want a good comparison for mauga lets look at roadhog. big half-naked tank who theyve been playing up a sexual energy/comic relief duology on since day one with racially insensitive cosmetic options. nobody treats it like its completely normal to talk about him that way. the dev team isnt pushing pinups of him out. he isnt flexing his boobs in trailers. hes a white dude*, so he gets the bare minimum dignity of being treated normally. incidentially hot, maybe, but for the most part his character is sold on being cool , funny and scary. mauga is being sold 50% on being a Sexy Rogue Love Interest and 50% on. releasing late. they put in so little effort for him to be anything else despite hyping him up as suuuper significant to the lore and a major gamechanger its almost embarrassing to watch. (this is why that short annoyed me so much for anyone keeping track).

sometimes its less abt a character "deserving better" and more about feeling that the kind of bigoted beliefs the writer(s) hold should not have been present in the story at all, given the subject matter of it.

i think whats so interesting about the severe fumble of the dragon age elves is how i get the feeling that the devs underestimated how many people identify so strongly with them, even outside of the cultures they are most often cited as analogous to. you dont have to be indigenous or jewish to see yourself or your family or your people in their struggle. anyone who has ever experienced racism, xenophobia, religious persecution, or any sort of social and economic discrimination can find themselves reflected in the elves of thedas. anyone who has experienced poverty. anyone who has ever experienced the threat of sexual violence. perhaps not all of the experience would resonate but some aspect of it would. and even if they weren't so universally relatable, they should have been treated better for the way they do so clearly mimic real world experiences of genocide, racism and discrimination and the implications of veilguard's message to just "forget the past and move on" is frankly disgusting when viewed as an answer to the same questions faced daily by the real world cultures they reflect, and yesterday's anon showed that brilliantly.

but im also fascinated by the thought process behind how they just got so readily written off as an irrelevant monolith. it feels like they thought it would make no difference for players to lose this major point of connection to the world. epler's comment about how the "elves had their time to shine" haunts my nightmares. where are they getting these ideas from like genuinely? i dont understand where this conception of the players being sick of elves comes from. sick of solas, sure. even ancient elves. this is a widely expressed sentiment all over the internet and i don't blame people for it. but modern elves? city elves and enslaved elves and new dalish clans? are people actually saying this somewhere? or did they just conflate people being sick of how over-exposed solas and ancient elves were with being tired of elves as a people? did they think that requests for more dwarf and qunari lore meant people wanted the elves to be narratively absent? and did they really try to remedy that with giving titan/harding a throwaway line about how the elves have "thrived" while they suffered? and not actually really giving the dwarves or qunari anything substantial anyway? or did they fear criticism for writing them "wrong" and decided it was better to barely write them at all? did they think the players just wouldn't care? did they think at all?

The main thing that first really hooked me into the DA universe is how much I relate to the way the Dragon Age elves were done.

People, indigenous to the land, who have experienced the effects of colonization through land theft, language and cultural genocide, actual genocide; who have a massive distrust of the colonized people because of their historically insidious interactions with them; who still hold onto and practice their culture in remote, rural areas away from said colonizers; members of the group that that live in cities who grow up with only an inkling of that culture, who then can be properly immersed in and rediscover their culture when going to said remote, rural cultural epicenters. Etc, etc.

So many things in the politics and the character interactions just feel so like my people’s and my own experience with my culture. So hats off to DA devs for creating this which resonates so deeply for me, even despite all the subsequent missteps and poor handling.

Anyway, due to all of that above, I created an Haudenosaunee/DA elf mash-up outfit (complete with sky domes, raised beadwork, finger woven sash, and calico fabric 🫡), and comm’d the amazing @polaeart to bring it to life for me. (tysm!! 💗)

there are just a set of very predictable and tedious tendencies in alternate historyes devised by self-proclaimed western "history fans" that if you spend any time in e.g. paradox game communities you will quickly become sick of. most of it is just barely disguised fascism, just true wehraboo garbage (endless germany and rome related points of divergence), some of it is just like... i don't know, the effects of thinking of yourself as a 'history nerd' without any actual interest in history, so there's always an element of cringey hero obsession with whichever general is their Blorbo, always the same extremely small handful of historical events given focus, always the same level of extremely surface-level "history facts" turned into play paths... boring, stupid, lame, don't care!

anyways yeah ate ck3 latin america is so fucking cool it genuionely makes me so happy to play in venezuela and see the attention to detail and culture it's given. + actual acknowledgement of indigenous peoples which is rare to see in usamerican post-apocalypse iction stuff.

I didn't work on the stream. I don't like the dev, I don't like the game, and I didn't want to get paid to advertise for it. So I didn't.

As such, I haven't felt comfortable making statements about it. It would feel disingenuous, to me, to make apologies or defenses for something I wasn't involved in.

I am sorry to hear indigenous fans felt their concerns were dismissed.
