“Why!?” Heavy exclaims, horrified and enraged.
Scout walks up to Heavy and places a hand on his shoulder. “All right, here’s what we’re gonna do: suck it all up in Engie’s big industrial-sized vacuum, put it in the truck, drive to the nearest fast food place, and we dump all of it in the parking lot. Got it?”

Percy the Small Engine [NWR AU]
Tumblr media
Yeah, still not ready for Henry.
History
Percy’s origins before coming to the NWR aren’t very well documented. It’s known that he was outshopped in 1917 for the Barrow Hematite Steel Company, but not who he was built by. It’s thought that he was made in-house by the company to plans from the then-defunct Gibb & Hogg engineering firm of Airdrie. Whatever the case may be, by 1919, he was declared surplus to the company’s requirements and sold on. He bounced between industrial companies until 1925, when he was purchased to take up the role of Vicarstown’s station pilot from Thomas. He worked the role, if somewhat reluctantly, for years. In 1935, The Fat Director struck a deal with the Great Western Railway and Duck was taken from his duties at Paddington to work the station at Vicarstown. The pair worked together for a while, with Percy showing him the ropes and Duck teaching him to stand up for himself. At the end of the year, Percy took his leave from Vicarstown and was reallocated to Ffarquhar with Thomas.
Shortly after his reallocation, problems began to arise. Percy’s coal capacity was too small to work the whole length of the line, as was proven in 1938 when his fire died out on the incline into Knapford harbour. With no more steam and no vacuum brakes, the trucks took their chance and surged Percy onto a sunken quay , past a danger sign and into the harbour. He was recovered the next day, after which he was sent to Crovan’s Gate works, where they fitted him with a rear bunker to supplement his internal one, extended his frames, fitted him with both vacuum and Westinghouse air brakes and replaced his deep-toned hooter whistle (which scared the local horses) with a higher-pitched Midland Railway one sourced from Killdane Ironworks. While working on the Ffarquhar Branch he's been involved in a fair few accidents including running away with a stone train, striking a lime cart on a crossing, being covered in treacle and running over a sack of porridge, receiving a works visit more frequently than any other engine on the railway. By 1992, his original boiler was completely worn out. Due to Gibb & Hogg having been defunct since 1912, he lay out of service for a long while before finally being reboilered in 1995, returning to work the same year. He has worked faithfully on the Ffarquhar Branchline ever since.
Personality
Percy is a name that needs no introduction. He's cheeky, silly and laid-back, often playing games with the trucks in the yards. He likes teasing and annoying his friends, seeing pushing their patience as a bonding activity. All in all, Percy is a dedicated and loyal worker while also being a funny, silly and laid-back character.
Thank you for reading this, if indeed you still are, and I hope to see you in the next one.
Cheerio!

Note
Since Thomas “obtains” so many locomotives, how does the NWR deal with incompatible brakes? Brightoners have Westinghouse Airbrakes, most have vacuum brakes, and some don’t even have train brakes? The troublesome trucks must be having a party.
So first of all, the majority of engine were snuck out of the country. America, Mexico and Canada have large populations of British Engines that escaped the modernization plan. Of those that did remain in Britian, the majority ended up at musuems, industrial sites, and Preservation Railways.
This all means the vast majority never served on the NWR, for those that did, Crovan's Gate changed them over to vacuum brakes. Also troublesome trucks are 'unfitted" goods. They don't have train brakes, hence why they are so troublesome.

Liladrien Week 2024 - Day Three: Alliance
"Kitty, to your left!"
Chat Noir rips his right gauntlet out from the metal abdomen of a fizzing drone, once an apathetic and harmless industrial vacuum cleaner, it had been transformed into a vicious attack machine with a penchant for sucking babies up its floor brush. Chat Noir had shoved the screaming mother-and-daughter pair it had been chasing after and neatly disabled it with a single strike to the heart. Now, he turns around, in the direction Argos had been calling at, to see a silver Mercedes-Benz coupé flooring it towards a family in a van desperately losing the speed race.
With a grunt, Chat Noir propels himself forward, transforming into a black bolt of lightning and slamming into the side of the Mercedes so hard, it flips over.
The family escapes, untouched, into the sunset.
"Come on," Chat Noir growls, back in 3D and ripping out chunks of the Mercedes’ tubes and engine and pipes, trying to stop its wheels from spinning. Alas, no matter what he does, the Mercedes revs and attempts to flip itself over. It must be sending help signals too, because Chat Noir can see a forklift truck, one perfectly capable of rightening 2t vehicles, approaching in the distance, beeping.
Chat Noir gives up.
"Cataclysm!" he roars, and slaps his charged hand onto the surface of the car. Immediately, rust spreads out from the point of contact, peeling away the glossy paint, eating into the metal, until there is nothing left but a pile of nuts and bolts.
The approaching forklift truck, as if wailing over the demise of a loved one, beeps louder, its pointy prongs headed straight for Chat Noir's head.
Chat Noir shakily stands up on his two feet, wondering whether or not Cataclysm will destroy the truck before it skewers him.
Argos is there, suddenly, and he neatly swipes his Fan through the truck’s body. He does so, so smoothly, that the truck itself doesn’t realise it's sliced into two until it travels a couple metres further and its top half falls to ground, its disected anatomy fizzing and on display for all to see.
"I told you not to use Cataclysm anymore," Argos says, approaching Chat Noir in disapproval, the violet of his eyes always make his scoldings all the more caustic.
"Well, I didn’t exactly have a choice, did I?" Chat Noir spits, barely managing to remain upright, Cataclysm disabled, his hands gripping his knees.
Argos raises an eyebrow.
"…sorry," Chat Noir says glumly.
"You’re exhausted," Argos says. "Come on, we need to take a break."
"We can’t afford to–"
"I'm sure we won't be scalped for daring to take a break," Argos says, looking around at the orange horizon, the drones buzzing like mosquitoes in the air, the highway around them littered with roasting tires and bits of brick and fallen streetlamps. "No one is going to gain anything from our exhaustion, least of all us. Let's just go and sit down for a moment."
Chat Noir doesn’t argue, partially because his mouth is so dry, his tongue is sticking to the roof of it.
Argos sighs. "Come on, cousin," he says, lifting one of Chat Noir’s arms around his shoulders and wrapping his own around Chat Noir’s waist. "Let’s get out of here."
Argos leaps, and half-carries Chat Noir to a secluded rooftop of a semi-tall office block where they can look down on most of the city, just not the Central Park Tower. It’s a dusty little spot messy with abandoned timber, sheets of green canvas as large as ship sails, and enough pigeons that Chat Noir starts sneezing immediately. Argos snaps out his Fan and sends a gust of wind blowing through the rooftop which scare all the pigeons away and which hopefully should get rid of most of the feather proteins.
Argos gently lowers Chat Noir down. His Ring has been beeping all throughout their journey here, Plagg trying to keep the transformation maintained when Adrien had been pushed to his limit. Finally, Adrien could de-transform with relief. His head droops as Plagg emerges after a chartreuse flash.
"This is not how I imagined our New York vacation going," Adrien says, massaging his neck. He cricks it. "Ow."
Félix, de-transformed, is looking over the edge of the building, trying to peer through the windows to its interior but it is impossible with the glass reflecting the orange sunlight. Félix winces and squints as a glare of UV light sears his eyes so brilliantly, he loses vision for a second.
"You two make yourself useful," Félix mumbles, rubbing his eyes and inspecting his fingers just in case the redness in his pupils will also translate to blood leaking out of his tear ducts. "Giant fucking building, there’s gotta be some food and water in there."
"Sure," Plagg says. "We’ll steal from the first terrified hostage we come across."
"It’s an office," Duusu adds. "All its workers must be trapped by their computers and money counters and printers." His eyes light up. Duusu loves printers. He loves scanning himself and converting all his bright plumage into technicolour and pasting himself around Félix's rooms.
"Just please get some food first?" Félix asks, and the two Kwami makes themselves scarce, diving into the building directly under Félix's feet.

DC-2 (Drink Caddy 2) by Gene Beley (1982), Android Amusement Corp, Irwindale CA. The DC-2 achieved TV fame, appearing in an episode of "CHiPs" called "Day of the Robot" in January 1983.
“The next model, DC-2, one of which was bought by the actor James Caan and some other friends as a present for Mr. Hefner, has a sleek fiberglass body, a color television in its chest, a videotape recorder in its midriff, a color camera in its head, a black plastic drink tray in its chest and other features. Though Mr. Beley believes that technology that could adapt DC-2 to a true robotic form is not far off, he is convinced that the home robot industry will begin with robots that have more entertainment value than practical use. ''It's nice to say you're going to make a home robot that's going to do all kinds of wonderful things,'' he commented, ''but if you ask someone if they'll spend $20,000 for it and they say: 'Are you crazy. I can buy a vacuum cleaner for $200,' it doesn't make sense.'' " – DOMESTICATING THE ROBOT FOR TOMORROW’S HOMES, Peter Applebone, The New York Times, March 4, 1982.
“Dayton’s Department Store, Minneapolis, Minnesota, utilizes a DC-2 robot on a regular basis for promotions. The 4’2” tall robot [middle photo] features a baked-on enamel grey paint job over a sleek fiberglass body with green, flashing L.E.D.s. Electronics include a 9” color TV in the chest, JVC video camera in the turning head, and a VCR.” – ANDROID AMUSEMENT CORP.
“BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – DC-2, the first robot ever arrested here, was released yesterday after two youngsters apologised in writing for creating a fuss with the 4-foot tall machine. … DC-2 took a remote-controlled walk along a block of North Beverly Drive in this wealthy Los Angeles suburb, passing out business cards bearing the name of Beley’s company, which manufactured it. Police responding to a call of a robot walking the street couldn’t find its human controller and ended up pulling DC-2’s batteries and carting it off – via a tow truck – to the pokey. “The kids had it without permission and were just screwing around.” said Lt. Russell Olson. “There will be no criminal filing.” When police neared the mechanical object, it was heard to say, “Help me! They’re trying to take me apart” ” – Robot back at home after arrest, jail stay, Associated Press.

Hydrovac Excavation: A Sustainable Approach to Subsurface Utility Projects
Tumblr media
In the realm of construction, the impact on the environment is a significant concern. The integration of environmental sustainability technology is pivotal in mitigating this impact while maintaining cost-effectiveness in debris removal. Project Sustainability Management (PSM) is becoming increasingly relevant in this context. PSM encompasses the planning, monitoring, and control of project delivery and support processes, taking into account environmental, economic, and social factors throughout the project's lifecycle. One key aspect of this is the sustainable management of excavated materials, which can be repurposed, thereby reducing waste.
Aussie Hydro-Vac Services stands at the forefront of environmental sustainability. The company is renowned in the vacuum excavation, drain cleaning, and cable location sectors, adhering to ethical operating and contractual practices. By incorporating environmental sustainability technology, Aussie Hydro-Vac Services effectively addresses complex project issues and crisis situations.
Enhancing Safety in Exposing Subsurface Infrastructure
The construction industry is increasingly adopting environmentally sustainable practices, particularly in projects involving sensitive subsurface utilities. Hydrovac excavation plays a crucial role in this shift. This technique transforms soil into a slurry, which is then easily suctioned and vacuumed into a tank. Compared to traditional mechanical digging methods, hydrovac excavation is safer, reducing the risk of cave-ins and other hazards associated with conventional excavation.
Hydrovac excavation employs a specialised vehicle equipped with a hose or wand. This wand injects water under pressure into the soil, breaking it up and transforming it into a slurry. The slurry is then vacuumed into a tank attached to the vehicle, keeping the worksite clean and orderly.
Precision and Control in Urban Environments
Hydrovac excavation is particularly useful in urban settings where precision and minimal impact are essential. It offers greater directional control, allowing technicians to work more accurately, especially near underground utilities. The technique is faster than traditional digging, minimising disruption in densely populated areas. Hydrovac excavation is ideal for city installations, sewer repairs, and plumbing, among other applications.
Environmental Sustainability in Project Management
Aussie Hydro-Vac Services leverages environmental sustainability best practices in project management, offering competitive advantages and economic benefits. The company utilises hydrovac excavation techniques with vehicles designed for non-destructive methods. This approach is particularly effective around sensitive infrastructure, offering a safe and efficient process.
State-of-the-Art Equipment and Infrastructure
Aussie Hydro-Vac Services is committed to sustainable environmental project management, promoting the judicious use of natural resources. The company's service range includes vacuum loading, drain and culvert cleaning, liquid and solid waste disposal, non-destructive digging, emergency response, and more. Its fleet includes the Cap Bora 3200 large vacuum unit, CCTV and geotech vans, medium vacuum excavation units, and Kaiser recycling units, ensuring efficient and effective hydrovac excavation.
Safety is paramount when working with underground utilities, and Aussie Hydro-Vac Services is equipped with the latest machinery, trucks, and skilled personnel to ensure the highest safety standards. Hydrovac excavation is an innovative solution for commercial, industrial drain cleaning, and utility applications.
For a safe, clean, precise, and cost-effective excavation solution, contact Aussie Hydro-Vac Services. Community Teaching of Game Features
One of the wildest contradictions of game development comes from the question of how much to tutorialize and how to go about it.
For games with relatively simple controls like Megaman X, you can do the fancy invisible tutorial of its prologue level where it quietly teaches you individual concepts, only moving on - literally only allowing YOU to move on - when you've mastered them. Basic l/r movement? Starts you in a basic screen with nothing. Shooting? Enemy too big to jump over. Jumping? Bottomless pits. Wall-jumping? Pit that DOES have a bottom that you have to wall-jump back out of. Hollow Knight also does this beautifully. Both games have several videos, with Arin Hanson's Sequelitis vid probably being the most famous.
But back when I was playing Pokemon Emerald, I looked up how you get some of the pokemon I hadn't found yet and...there was no way to expect a person to discover the information about how they could be found in game. And when I shared this complaint with my friend with a PHD in Japanese media studies - a literal Pokemon Professor, as she bragged when she first got said degree - she said that the way I'd discovered where they were was probably the way I was supposed to. Gamefreak wants people to share wikis and talk on the playground about the Mew under the truck (it isn't) and make guides and videos about how to get all the Cursed Beasts in Scarlet/Violet and so on.
And I saw a video series from a while ago where Razbuten shared his wife's experience with learning the vocabulary of games later in life (than childhood; I'm pretty sure she's a good deal younger than I am). And something struck me during that explanation: He talked about how many of the lessons he'd probably learned from message boards, guides, or just having someone tell him "you can push b to run in Mario," but here he was trying to have her learn the same lessons in a vacuum. To his credit, one of his conclusions on the same video is, "Don't do that."
But it left me wondering: How much effort should a developer spend on teaching new players? Part of why tutorials trend toward kind of low-effort is because a game can reasonably expect that 80%+ of its audience already knows almost everything about its control scheme, if said scheme is following conventions of the genre - be that mouse-aim on a shooter, the function of HUD compasses with quest markers, or something as seemingly obvious as "press A to jump." Of the remaining 20%, 80% of them can be expected to pick up the controls of the individual game swiftly because they're relatively familiar with games in general. So in terms of True N00bs who need to be taught how to traverse a game, any game, in your tutorial? That's like 4% of your audience. Is it worth tutorializing heavily in a way that some of them won't even read and which might reduce the fun of the first level (that is, the level roughly all of your players are guaranteed to play)? It makes sense that so many tutorials end up feeling so low-effort. And on the other end, if you want one that's glorious and teaches everything while never getting in the way of great players, how much money and dev time has to go into making a masterful experience like the one that Arin Hanson gushes over in his Sequelitis video? Is that worth having one less level in your game? Two? What's the cutoff?
My suspicion is that some studios see the 4% and opt to go low-effort, and others do their best to elegantly include something that at least somewhat gives totally new players a handle on the situation.
The two bits of Secret Sauce I've taken away from this and would offer to fellow devs:
The Safe Zone. Hollow Knight has platforming areas with few or no enemies and with no penalty for falling. Super Mario 64 has the lawn in front of the palace where you can just mess around with the controls and explore.
Fun Controls. One of the things that has helped maintain Nintendo's place at or near the top of the industry for so long is that the movement style for its characters is just fun. Mario in Super Mario 64 is fun to run around the palace lawn in spite of there being no objectives there! This in turn gives incentive for players to experiment with the system and discover moves for themselves.
Blarg, this is neat but got far afield from the point.
The point was that even basic controls of your game can be community-taught, and that will usually be better than you can teach them because it can be responsive to the individual queries the player has. I've experienced the same when trying to figure out how to write a rulebook for a board game. You need one person in the community of people who plays your board game to be able to learn the game from your rulebook, if that. It's possible they'll learn from videos online anyway.
At that point, the value of having your rulebook be effective as a guidebook, a set of examples, and a place to find answers to frequently asked questions quickly gets bumped up over having it be a straightforward how-to tutorial. Doesn't necessarily change how much you write but rather changes the style of what you write, possibly even the format.
