i am not going to parody myself by posting yet another song from the smithsonian folkways' classic labor songs collection but i did burst into tears when "we just come to work here, we don't come to die" came on in the car while i was driving to work. the occupational safety and health act was passed fifty-five years ago last week. countless workers died to get that legislation passed, and it was, i cannot emphasize this enough, a weak liberal compromise from the outset! it was inadequate! OSHA has never been equal to its stated purpose of protecting workers from occupational hazards, it is not radical, its existence was always a placatory measure in place of real worker power on jobsites! we knew that then & labor power has declined so much that i'm sitting here like, mourning an agency which was designed to undercut unions, which is no disrespect to any individual person who worked there, many of whom did vital work with great care, or at the national institute for occupational safety & health, which has recently been liquidated, functionally ending black lung surveillance programs & removing part 90 coverage [rule that allows workers with early signs of black lung to be moved to less-dusty jobs without penalty, prolonging their lives in the face of incurable disease]. all of these measures were always insufficient to begin with! but now there's not even an effort to pretend that the government should protect the people from whom it draws its authority, because they are just straight up shamelessly KILLING FOLKS AT WORK AGAIN. on top of the baldfaced murder being done in the name of law enforcement. and we're all just supposed to pay our fucking taxes and stuff, jesus wept

Noldorin Music; Afrobeat from Cuivinen to Valinor and back again.
Wanted to make a list of some afrobeat and adjacent songs that I associate with the noldor and other elven groups and why. It's great to see more elves of colour in art but skin colour isn't just an aesthetic, and its weird to see black characters only ever given white voices in music recs or playlists. This is just a small selection of headcannons I personally enjoy, I greatly encourage y'all to seek out other black artists to listen to.
Soso by Omah Lay. Older hymn from before the crossing, passed down more as a relic of old fear, has its resurgence among the noldor in Beleriand especially after the bragolach. Less of an entreaty to the valar than a demand for intervention from anyone who might hear. A desperate plea for anyone to take pity.
Love Nwantiti Remix by Ckay. You know the tra-la-la-lally elves that sing at bilbo and the dwarves in Rivendell? This is the Valinor equivalent. You are wandering Oromë's woods when you walk into a clearing full of half naked somewhat tipsy elves all dancing around and singing this.
Johnny by Yemi Alade. A song from before the crossing about a lady hunting down and beating up her cheating bf who is going around promising other women marriage and knocking them up. I have a vivid image of Míriel wine drunk at a party post-reimbodiment bursting into this song with Indis joining her. Everyone else is holding their breath waiting for an Incident... except Finwe, who is pissing himself laughing and actively cheering them on.
Pull up by Burna Boy. My hc is that Fingon is singing something similar to this in angband. It's completely unserious, just a fun song he remembers from home, remembers singing it outside Maitimo's window to bother him and make him come out faster. He's not expecting the wavering voice following his, thinks he's imagining it until it breaks away from his entirely and continues when he stops.
AKWAABA by GuiltyBeatz and Mr Eazi. Specifically a song for the weird cultural mishmash that occurred in communities built by thralls who escaped angband. Songs tend to be light on lyrics or include multiple languages. More about the sound of the music and embracing the feeling that your body is yours again, dance with us, you are free, go crazy, you are welcome here.
Bloody Samaritan by Ayra Starr. A prayer sung by Beleriand noldor, but not a serious one. Essentially used as a way to warn others you won't take their judgement while using the format of a prayer, like saying "God do you see this shit??" I associate this song with Galadriel in Doriath, dealing with rumours spread about her.
Bank on it by Burna Boy. The closest thing to a prayer that the thralls of angband's fighting pits have. A prayer for survival and for forgiveness for what they must do to survive. It's in Old Quenya, the first tongue. There's an intimate solidarity and fear between those who know it.

I think it’s really special that the most awarded country album of all time is about a teenage girl’s hopes, dreams and just daily life experiences.

"I’m talking to this cat after our show in Dresden. I can tell he’s a performer. I ask if he’s performing at the festival he says no, he and his friends came from Berlin just to see us. Flattered, I ask if he can write the name of his group in my phone so I can YouTube his stuff back at hotel. He hands my phone back- Rammstein. FREAKIN PAUL LANDERS FROM RAMMSTEIN. He’s very happy to hear we used his music to open Speedmouse for years. We hang. Tour made. #rammstein #paullanders #umbiesontour #humorzonedresden"

isn't it wild how you can play through an entire indie game in a single day and be left with a deeper, more profound experience, story, moral or question all wrapped in a more unique and impactful art style than many triple a games nowadays. for like 8 bucks.

Not to be that person, but I actually saw Emilia Perez and it was AWFUL. lol. I made my friend watch it with me for good measure. And we had to keep pausing it. Just hot caca. Happy for Zoe getting her flowers. But they’re long over due! We all know she’s deserved the accolades since avatar 2009 and even colombiana!

[personal and vaguely unnecessary whining underneath, just a bunch of undigisted and personal thoughts about my problems with Creation and Art that mostly just concern myself, but here they are anyway woooo!!!!]
feeling some kind of way about having to concede my artistic calling truly is in fanwork, but, yeah. all of my creative energy really tends towards fanwork, and like. not even the popular kind really, but the long, cerebral, pretentious kind of fanwork that is impossibly costly to produce yet comes with an inherently very limited audience at the end of the road. but every time I try to do something else, something "original", I get frustrated and I feel like I have nothing to say, or that what I have to say isn't really worth saying/that I'm only kind of doing this out of fear of being perceived as illegitimate rather than because of actual passion. I have original ideas, but I don't even really like most of them. it's weird, to have your inner creative fire being so intricately connected to something you will never have legal control over, something you can't really show off/take actual pride in, and something that is, by and large, decried as a waste of talent or time or proper artistic merit.
but yeah, it's the shape of my brain. it's what it is. I'm just not sure how to connect this reality to the rest of my creative/career frustrations. weird place to be, don't love that my brain chose to be like this honestly.
#thoughts#personal#I have spent my entire youth being criticized because of my enthusiasm for fanwork instead of proper creation you could gain accolades for#granted I shouldn't have gotten that kind of pressure before I was even age 10#but#yeah I know having a brain made for original work doesnt automatically mean you gain recognition and respect#but fanwork is just. not the way to go.#there's a ton of people I know who have a latent condescencion towards me because I write fanwork#in a given style that is pretty hard to parse through#I indeed do refuse to prioritize digestibility and clarity#but I do that in fandom instead of in lit fic!!! because I'm stupid!! my brain is dumb!!!#but yeah I don't know what to tell you all my best and most audacious work is fanwork#it is what it is and I don't think it will change#and I don't think fanwork is shameful or should be considered lesser#why should it be???#it holds the potential of sitting at the crossroad of deep-cut critique + admiration and love + creative experimentation#in a medium that is deeply entranched within our current era of media consumption and therefore I would argue is inherent commentary#also I wrote for IPs for work and what I did there was much dumber than what I might have written on my own#anyway weird thoughts and weird question marks for my future as the industry is slowly falling apart around me#might delete later but I just. mood post. feeling weird.#deflated professionnally and endlessly energized outside of that even though both are two sides of the same kind of work#a mood for weird and uncertain times I guess
