They say that the Pokémon, Mew has the DNA of all the Pokémon. This Mew changed its colors and type by changing its DNA. This one became an Ice type and made a bunch of ice-creams on its tail.

But Uh-Oh!

The Prince of Thieves (new and improved) - looking for readers!

For the last few months, I've been working on editing The Prince of Thieves, a story novel which was originally published on Tumblr and ao3 between October 2022 and June 2023. As I work through the last few chapters and prepare to write the new opening, I thought I'd put out some feelers...

By the end of this month (hopefully), I'll be seeking feedback on this manuscript!

I would love to connect with folks who are:

okay with whump (I would never call my writing gory, but there is LOTS of angst, captivity and restraints, hopelessness, torture, illness and bodily injury)

The goal of Iustitia aecum, the notorious thieving gang, is to steal from the rich and give to the poor. For a few years, that’s exactly what Jamie, Will, Colette, and Geoff (as the gang’s inner circle) do; they slip through the fingers of the law time and time again.

One day, everything goes wrong.

Will, by a stroke of fateful misfortune, falls into a trap meant for Jamie, the real leader of IA, and ends up in prison—in the custody of Constable Baden Hatchett, an officer who is willing to do whatever it takes to get Will to crack so he can bust IA and bring all its members to justice.

With execution—his brother’s and his own—hanging over his head, Will resolves to take his secrets to the grave, swearing not to betray the only family he has left.

Bree Cooper is one of IA’s runners, privy to no secrets save for one she learned by chance…that she was never supposed to know. When she, too, falls into the hands of the constabulary, she is forced to reckon with her past (a complicated history with Constable Hatchett himself) and her future (the gallows).

Will and Bree’s lives were already intertwined, and when they find each other again behind bars, they will rewrite the stories fate has planned for them—together.

It’s cold up here on the roof of the boarding house—that’s why no one else is up here, probably—but there’s something delightfully bracing about the wind scrubbing the day’s dust from my skin while the stars gaze down. It’s delicious, almost wicked, to peer into the city streets from so high. Up here, no one else can see me. Up here, no one can say a damn thing when I pull up my sleeves. There’s no one to gasp or gawk as I reveal the soft, scandalous flesh of my arms and trace my fingers along, throwing into sharp relief what must remain invisible at all other times: black-as-night ink painted on the canvas of my skin. It’s a shame the tattoo would send me to prison if the constables saw it, because it’s beautiful. Sometimes I just stare down at the details—the leaves bursting from a tree in full bloom, the ring around its swirling, entwined roots. Would anyone else, other than my fellow runners or the constabulary, know what it means if they caught a glimpse? I’m not so sure, but they’d certainly be confused if they saw it on my arm. Silas Cooper’s daughter, tattooed like a common criminal? A gentlewoman like her? How? Why? What happened? I scowl into the night. Breanna Cooper died with Silas, or at least I like to think she did. When I think back on the girl who stumbled, dry-eyed, away from her father’s deathbed and then ran from the man she was supposed to marry, out into a chilly autumn night much like the one I’m gazing into now, I don’t recognize her—don’t recognize myself. That girl ran into a life of nothing, yes. But isn’t that also what she ran away from?

FFXIV Write 2023: Master Post & Round Up!

Seven years of FFXIV Write in the bag! Whether this is your first year or your seventh, whether you wrote seven words or seven thousand, GOOD JOB, EVERYONE! And a thank you, as always, to @sea-wolf-coast-to-coast for continuing to host and provide prompts for us year after year.

As with last year, I will not be checking my word count or any other sort of stats; I ended up focusing on that in past years to my detriment, and the point of this challenge is to have fun! It's enough for me that I wrote every day. :D

BUT! October is here--and that it means it's time for my own personal challenge: FFXIV Edit! The heart of FFXIV Write is just to write, regardless of mistakes or roughness, but I do like to go back and revisit my ideas and see if my brain wants to put some more polish on my entries. So, throughout October, I will continue my tradition of posting each of my prompts to AO3 once a day and take the time to give them an edit or expansion or rewrite as I see fit.

The Dimensional Pocket Knife

Need a screwdriver? a pen? Maybe a crowbar to open that locked chest? Say no more, the Dimensional Pocket Knife has all you need and more!  ...Well, most of the time.

The Dimensional Pocket Knife starts with 5 charges, and at the end of each day restores 1D4 +1 charges (to a max of 5). Upon use, a player can try to pull a tool of their choice from the pocket knife. They must roll a WIS saving throw, against the DPK's DC of 13. On a successful roll, the player draws the tool they desire. On a failure, the player instead rolls a D100, and draws the corresponding tool from the below list. (NOTE: the DPK works using the rules of Hammerspace, and so can draw tools much bigger than itself from it’s body, e.g, a spear, a crowbar, etc. The DPK itself is the size of a standard pocket knife)

ON DECEMBER 29, 2022, at Stardom Dream Queendom 2, Cosmic Angels expat Mina Shirakawa introduced the world to Club Venus. Originally consisting of Shirakawa, Xia Brookside, and Mariah May, the glamorous group made its debut in the inaugural TRiangle Derby trios torment. With a membership that swelled to include Australian grappler Xena, former NXT talent Jessie (Elaban/Kamea), and another ex-Cosmic Angel in Waka Tsukiyama, Club Venus quickly became a favorite of international Stardom fans. And that was due in no small part to the efforts of one of its charter members. 

Fashionable, charismatic, and athletic, Mariah May had all the making of a top star. May put in the hard work from the very start of her Japanese excursion, developing a notable chemistry with partners and opponents alike. Stardom’s competitive touring environs compelled the Tottenham, England-born wrestler to develop in-ring skills to rival those of her peer. And, in a massive vote of confidence, May was given the name “Foreign Ace” by no less than Stardom Executive Producer Rossy Ogawa.

With Shirakawa, May formed the impressie tag team Rose Gold, which reigned as Goddesses of Stardom champions for six weeks last summer. Her performance with the Club Venus unit in the 5STAR Grand Prix round robin tourney grabbed the attention of promoters worldwide. Indeed, after her Stardom contract expired in the fall, rumors circulated that May had inked a contract with All Elite Wrestling in the U.S. 

In mid-October, during a well-earned period of downtime, Mariah May checked in from her home country to chat with PWI Editor-in-Chief Kevin McElvaney about what she’s learned from her nine-month stint in Japan, the current U.K. grappling scene, and what she might be up to in the future.

McELVANEY: Your Stardom run has put you in the brightest spotlight of your career and earned you the moniker  “Foreign Ace.” Why do you think you connected so well with the fans of that promotion? MAY: I believe the reason I connected so well with the fans is because I love Stardom as much as they do. I’ve always held the belief the best training and performance for women’s wrestling is found in Japan. I think my passion, improvement, and dedication in moving across the world gave me their respect (And Ogawa-san’s when he named me the “Foreign Ace”). I know a lot of fans were happy to see how much fun I was having, too. I want my work to tell stories and make people feel something, and Stardom afforded me so many chances to do that.

McELVANEY: What did your 2023 excursion to Japan teach you? How did your craft improve?

MAY: My excursion in Japan taught me how important it is to take risks. Within a few days of being in Japan, I was offered to extend my tour, and I said I would stay there as long as they would have me. That chance and sacrifice allowed me nine months of dojo training, training at the Snakepit, touring a beautiful country, and more matches than any other woman up until I left! The repetition and grind helped me perfect my moveset, build chemistry–especially an amazing feeling when you don’t speak the same language. McELVANEY: Speaking of Mina Shirakawa, Rose Gold was quite the successful duo. Do you think we could see the team get back together sometime in the future?

MAY: Mina Shirakawa and I have such a special bond. She’s the reason I finally got to wrestle in Japan. We said we wanted to wrestle teams all over the world. I’m hopeful we can reunite and do just that!

McELVANEY: I’d imagine one of the reasons you returned to England was to spend time with your loved ones. Do you have your eye on the current scene there? It seems to have evolved, with new stars in the making, even in the short time you’ve been away.

MAY: It’s definitely been nice to be hoke and spend some time with my family. I have my sights set on wrestling internationally. I have so many places I want to wrestle. I won four championships in the U.K. feel for the moment my time here is done and the next girls should come through! I’d love to wrestle on a big stage in front of my family in the U.K., though. Maybe one day!

McELVANEY: You’ve been accumulating more and more fans in North America, particularly here in the States. Anybody in particular you’d like to get in the ring with on this side of the pong?

MAY: It’s been incredible and humbling to have so much support worldwide, particularly North America has always been very vocal for me. There’s such a deep pool of talent in America. And I’ve only toured there once. So I have a pretty long list. I want to do intergender (matches) … there’s an open challenge!

McELVANEY: What’s next for Mariah May?

MAY: I am still deciding my next move. I love Japan, and I want to have a deathmatch there. (Risa Sera, if you’re reading this …) I also have a strong desire to travel more, as before Japan I had visited 5 countries in one year! There’s lots of opportunity and it’s really exciting.

U.S.-China trade talks resume in Washington, Democratic presidential hopefuls have big ideas on economic policy, and Brexit is generating yet more uncertainty in the U.K. Good morning. BATTERING RAM

As trade negotiations with China resume this week, the Trump administration is racing to strike a deal that will result in long-term reforms–and prove that tariffs are an effective battering ram to open markets. The chairman is pursuing an ambitious agenda to advance new deals this year encompassing about 40% of the global economy, Jacob M. Schlesinger reports.

China is the priority, as the administration has given Beijing a March 1 deadline to commit to cement, broad economic changes. But it’s not the only battle: On Sunday, the president received a Commerce Department report laying out options for blocking auto imports in the name of national security–a measure that would largely affect U.S. allies in Europe, Japan and South Korea. And the administration is ramping up its pushing to win Congressional approval for the rewritten North American Free Trade Agreement.

WHAT TO WATCH TODAY

The Cleveland Fed’s Loretta Mester speaks on the economy and monetary policy at 8: 50 a.m. ET.

The National Association of Home Builders housing market index for February is expected to tick up to 59 from 58 a month earlier.( 10 a.m. ET)

U.S.-China trade talks resume. Deputy-level sessions start Tuesday, principal-level sessions start Thursday in Washington.

The 2020 presidential campaign is generating scads of policy proposals with potentially broad economic repercussions. The latest: Elizabeth Warren’s $70 billion-per-year universal child-care program that would cover up to 12 million children. The Massachusetts senator would pay for it through her proposed “wealth tax, ” Reid J. Epstein reports.

She isn’t alone in offering robust federal programs. New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker touts his “baby bonds” proposal, which would allot $2,000 at birth and up to $1,000 annually after that to every child in the U.S ., accessible on their 18 th birthdays. Eight of the 11 Democratic primary nominees back a single-payer government health care program; five co-sponsored a federal program to provide paid household leave; and at least four support building college tuition free at public universities.

WHAT’S COOLER THAN COOL?

It’s no longer cool to talk about the federal public deficits. President Trump didn’t talk about it during his State of the Union. Neither did Stacey Abrams in her Democratic response. All told, Washington’s red-ink alarms have gone dead, even though the annual deficit will pass the trillion-dollar mark starting in 2022. The WSJ’s Gerald F. Seib asks if this lack of concern is wise.

The answer: perhaps not indefinitely. First, when overseas fund finances American indebtednes, that means some of America’s domestic economic output heads overseas in debt pays. Second, interest payments are piling up and mobbing out spending on government programs like infrastructure, schools and social benefits.

COUNTERPOINT

Some economists are making a once-heretical argument: The U.S. needn’t be so worried about all of its red ink. One theory: When the interest rate on government borrowing is below the growth rate of the economy, financing the debt should be sustainable, David Harrison and Kate Davidson write. Some left-wing economists go even further: Modern Monetary Theory argues that fiscal policy makers are not constrained by their ability to find investors to buy bonds that finance deficits–because the U.S. government can, if necessary, print its own currency to finance deficits or repay bondholders.

NEGATIVE FEEDBACK

Investors around the globe are effectively paying governments to hold more than $11 trillion of their bonds, a fresh sign of ebbing economic confidence in Europe and Japan. Negative-yielding government bonds outstanding through mid-January have risen 21% since October, Daniel Kruger reports. The bonds guarantee that a purchaser at issuance will receive less in refund and periodic interest than they paid.

HOW’S THAT BREXIT THING GOING?

Seven lawmakers quit the U.K.’s main opposition Labour Party on Monday, the biggest defection from a major British registered political party in nearly 40 years and the latest evidence that Brexit is accelerating a realignment of the country’s politics. The lawmakers, who are against Brexit, want a second referendum on the U.K.’s membership of the European Union, Max Colchester and Stephen Fidler report.

Japanese vehicle maker Honda Motor Co. will shut a major production plant in the U.K ., becoming the latest automobile group to scheme a pull back from the U.K. as Brexit looms. Earlier this month Nissan Motor Co. said it abandoned plans to produce its next-generation X-Trail crossover sport-utility vehicle in the U.K ., quoting uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT( AND I FEEL FINE)

The U.K. economy continued to add jobs in the final months of 2018, in spite of persistent jitters over the country’s exit from the European Union. The number of people in work in the three months through December was up 167,000 on the previous three-month period, maintaining the employment rate unchanged at a record high of 75. 8 %. The jobless rate bided at 4.0%, its lowest level for four decades, David Hodari reports.

Germany is bracing for a global slowdown. “An export champion, it has been one of the biggest recipients of globalisation, free trade and open perimeters: exports are equivalent to 50 per cent of its GDP . … Yet its export success also attains it uniquely vulnerable to external shocks. As a result, Donald Trump’s showdown with Xi Jinping, America-first protectionism and weakening growth in big markets like China–whose GDP expanded by just 6.6 per cent last year, the lowest rate since 1990 — are taking a much bigger toll on Germany than on other countries such as France, ” Guy Chazan writes in the Financial Times.
