Maybe you can "see" by my posting time that things went fairly "sklent" for me today. 🙃

But, I admit despite that, this may well be my favorite mandala so far—At least a small win for the day! 🙌

Well Sparklers, if you thought for a moment that me uploading yesterday's Obscutober a bit early in the day [for me, at least] meant earlier uploads were going to continue, you've been bamboozled about as much as I was last night when I came home and thought, "I'll just work on tomorrow's mandala a bit before bed..."

Because I said that, and then I sat at my desk and spent more time just trying not to fall asleep than actually getting any work done, considerably worse than the fight I had on Day 3. 😫 It was so frustrating!

And then, naturally, I woke up this morning and have spent most of the day struggling to string more than 5 minutes together at a time to actually get it done. Lately, it never seems to fail—If I'm already under pressure have something time-sensitive to do, suddenly there is just no time to do anything. 🙄

Still, you can see I did pull together something. By some miracle, I'm also actually really happy with it—This is probably the weirdest mandala and also the weirdest color palette yet!

Clearly, I opted to keep the mandala lines mostly simple. The definition for today is the most simple so far, so combined with my difficulties in actually this done, that was just the course of action that made the most sense. However, me being me, I did have to find some way to still make it interesting and not just an otherwise plain but very triangle/diagonal line-heavy mandala.

I assume it's easy to see—ha ha—that I opted to make a very angular side-glancing eye to go with the third variation of the word. The side-glancing part was made a little bit easier by discovering what the "rotational symmetry" toggle in. Procreate's guide settings actually does—I really could've used that back on Day 2 if I'd realized what it did then!

That eye shape guided the rest of the piece once I had it down. The outer most mandala border was vaguely angry-eyebrow inspired, the inner one was sort of makeup and sharp cheekbone inspired, and then it's difficult to see but there's a little bit of hatching shaped like tears under the eye portions. Worth noting that I almost didn't have the one lower "lash"—That was a late addition while I was just trying to fill out some of the empty space, but I think it was one of the most important additions in the end; It kinda ties the whole eye shape together in way that just wasn't happening without it.

The rest was mostly random and just whatever felt like it worked well. I didn't want to get too carried away with stuff that wasn't more directly related to the eye shape and make it too difficult to recognize, in addition to just not wanting to take too long working on the art as a whole because of the aforementioned time-related struggles I've already been having today.

I was very resistant to adding any curves at all, but they ended up there anyhow because I was running out of ideas for filling the space with angles. I do kind of like how it contrasts with expectations a bit though; That you'd expect eyes to be curved and soft but accented by angles, so this is the other way around.

The eyes also shaped the color palette; I was actually very tempted to do this one with white lines instead and fill in the whites of the eyes as solid instead—And I'm still thinking about doing that as a bonus verson for my Ko-fi Members if I have time, but we'll see; I'll add the link here if I do—but I ultimately chose black just so the eye shape would be more obvious. From there, the natural choice was to do something that kind of colored the eyes "properly," and just to make it more interesting I did the "big 3" eye colors. So we're up to black, white, blue, green, brown. Already a slightly unconventional palette. I polished it off by making the background a pale pink. [This is also a bit of change of form—So far I've picked the background color and then colored on top of it.] I didn't want to pick a natural skin color because that felt both boring and just generally not right, and for some reason the idea to just continue to pick something weird was calling to me. Pink was the first option that came to mind, and I was almost startled but how much I like the way this looks when I first tried it, so my decision was made.

Thing DONE, yay! 😃

It may have taken far too long and far too much unrelated, external frustration to get it done, but I am grateful that I like the end results as much as I do. Considering how it got started, I did not go in with high hopes. 😅

Next we'll see how much additional frustration I incur in trying to cross-post it. 🙃

Hopefully, tomorrow will go more smoothly, but I'm keeping my expectations low—I know how Inktober season usually goes. 🫠 But we'll find out one way or another, won't we...

Day 12: Moth

Mushroom folk seemed like an odd name for fellows so clearly bug-like. Though it makes a bit of sense once you know of their fun quirk of growing mushrooms from their skin which is often powdered with their own moth dust. This in its own is odd, but nothing is too odd for them.

 I know it‘s not a violet and it‘s not angular, but hear me out on this! I saw so many amazing Linktober drawings and got inspired to draw the silent princess. I love these flowers in-game. They are beautiful and I just HAD to draw them~

Inktober day 16 - Angular (stones)

this one was a bit harder last night and since my day was really busy I decided to just do a little simple thing.:)

Inktober Day 15: Slippy Toad from Star Fox 64, based on an old blocky render of his - I like the angular edges, and thought it'd be fun to draw.

I opted to keep things a little more simple for today…Yet I’m still posting late-ish & feel a bit -un-woven myself because I kept noticing dumb mistakes in the final image that I had to fix. 😅

Ironically, I feel my brain is coming a bit unwoven at the moment because while I technically finished today's mandala much, much earlier, when I sat down to start the upload process, I kept noticing really dumb mistakes or oversights I had to go back and fix. 🙃

Ignoring that, I am once again really pleased with these results. "Interweaving" didn't give me a ton of super strong imagery to work with, so I opted to stay true to that keep things simple.

I was kinda worried "just woven lines" wouldn't be visually interesting enough and might be a little too similar to how angular yesterday's mandala was, so I did linger and tinker with certain things a little longer than I otherwise would have on that front. In particular, those interlocked squares near the corners were probably the biggest pain to draw out of the whole thing, but I feel like they add a lot and that's why I even bothered with them.

There were also several false starts to include more curves (again, to help separate from yesterday's piece) but you can see they largely failed. I just couldn't come up with an arrangement that felt like it fit with this concept. The only curves that survived are the really thin ones in those squares I mentioned and then the "soft" triangles I used between weaving lines.

Those soft triangles were a very spur-of-the-moment idea trying to provide some visual relief from all the hard edges and angles. But I really like how, especially hatched over like this, they kind of look like worn appears of fabric, or some other kind of "fabric depth." The mandala design might look even better if the center octagon was filled in similarly instead of the definition being there; Food for thought for another time! The color palette is sort of random; In the name of simplicity, I went with the first thing I thought of: Rainbows are color "woven" together, and/or white light is "woven" from all of the colors. However, in my efforts to shift a little away from a "traditional" rainbow palette and not use too much blue and risk getting a glass-like effect (because I'll be working with glass themes at least one other time later this month, possibly two), I circled back around and this palette is a little more similar to yesterday's than I really wanted. But I've fiddled back and forth with it enough times that I'm really just tired of messing with it and want to settle, lest I keep fiddling until 11 o'clock at night. To be clear, I still like the color palette a lot; The part I'm struggling with is the similarities to yesterday's and the specific ideas I had in mind for this piece as a whole. In a vacuum where those two things don't matter, I actually find the color palette really pretty as a step-off from a more traditional rainbow.

Art feelings are complicated sometimes! 🤷‍♀️

The biggest silver lining though is that, aside from the dumb mistakes I mentioned at the beginning, I didn't encounter as much frustration in trying to put this one together as I did yesterday, which was nice. Hopefully that's a pattern that continues, because I think this coming week is going to be an awfully busy one in a few different ways. 🤞

Only one way to find out, though...! Hope you Sparklers don't come unwoven before then. 🤪

Hey! Sorry it's been taking me so long to get back on top of things, but it's time for my resurgence! I've beaten the flu, cleared my mind, and am ready to take over the world again! Thank you so much for everyone that's been so patient with me through this and I'm sending you all lots of love.

Anywho, this is an adorable pic I drew out of Marvin for @sualstic as part of an art trade! They're an amazing sweetheart of a person who everyone in the world should follow because just...they're amazing okay? I hope you like this, buddy ^^

“The statues and portraits don’t do her justice. The Hero of Ferelden is actually smaller than depicted, short and lean, muscles cutting under her skin in hard angles. Tense, coiled, always. In fact, she has always been a...hard woman. The light she radiates is less a glow and more a refraction--beaming forward in piercing lines as if from a refined gem. She is lovely, of course, the artists usually capture that...but they smooth her edges.”  

“Leliana, were you two...I mean, did you love her?”

“Ha, Inquisitor, no subtlety! Perhaps, once. She only had eyes for Alistair. While we traveled together she was my dear friend, and I am happy to still regard her as such.”
