ARNO SABRAE ☙ first to the keeper My dearest friend, it's been ten years since I found myself leaving you all behind to try and stop the Blight. At least five since I last saw you. I regret many things but refusing your plea to join me and the Wardens in our endevors is not one of them. I won't bind you to a life of fighting in the darkness when you always held so much light. Arno, I implore you, do not waste your time looking for me. I walk a perilious path filled with uncertainty and death, I can't bear the thought of seeing you stuck in the Deep Roads with me, when your magic and your potential could bring you to lead what remains of our clan one day. I hope you will find it in your heart to forgive me my only weakness: choosing to miss you terribly from afar, over the cold comfort of knowing you are near but in terrible danger. Please, if what we had ever meant anything to you, live well, my friend. May Mythal watch over you. – Eternally yours, Aris Mahariel

@febuwhump Day 12: "Can you hear me?”
Fandom: Dragon Age Whumpee:  Female Lavellan
Summary: Lavellan falls off the roof of a building while pranking with the Friends of Red Jenny. Fortunately, it initiates a meetcute.
AO3 Link
~~*———————————————*~~
Miriel had lost count of the hours she had been awake. Her work with the Friends of Red Jenny had been far more hands-on than she had anticipated, given her diminished responsibilities within the Inquisition, and she certainly hadn’t planned on spending all her waking hours chasing dead-end sightings and rumours of Solas’ movements.
Still, in the three years since the Divine Conclave she had grown accustomed to it all. At times she could almost fool herself she wasn’t sick, able to mask the pain and fatigue she had always felt even from herself from time to time. Being a Jenny was a welcome distraction from the world-ending danger she always seemed to be facing.
The problem, however, with ignoring a sickness was that it tended to remind you of its existence at the worst possible moment. Not moments after the pink paint poured from the rooftop onto the head of another masked noble than Miriel’s legs had shaken and given way. She toppled and failed to catch herself in time, landing heavily on a balcony below, and the world faded.
“Inky? Can you hear me?”
The voice was unfamiliar; a low rumble that pierced directly into her chest. Miriel slowly opened her eyes, wincing as several jolts of pain hit at once from varying parts of her body. She automatically reached for her left hand, only to sigh and flop back down when she remembered it was no longer there.
Her arms hurt. Her legs hurt. Her back hurt. She was fairly certain she needed a healer. Instead, she eyed the concerned face above her. Another elf gazed down at her with narrow hazel-gold eyes, greenish-white vallaslin adorning her brown skin like fade-touched serpentstone. The marks were of Falon’Din, she realised with a tinge of sadness.
“Only Sera gets to call me that,” Miriel managed eventually, the act of speaking shooting pain through her chest that had her choking on her own words.
“Apologies, ma’am,” the stranger hummed, her voice holding a similar Ferelden roughness to that of Sera, though flatter like Cullen’s. “Keep still, I’ll heal you.”
A mage? Miriel groaned with equal parts pain and relief as the familiar tingle of magic filled her body, feeling muscle and bone pull back together and her back crack into place. The relief was almost enough to knock her back out, but she forced herself to stay awake; though made no efforts to move.
“There, that should help. Sera warned us you were reckless with your health but I don’t think anyone expected you to take a nosedive off the roof like that.” Offering her a hand, she pulled her to her feet with a surprising strength Miriel hadn’t been expecting. “Nice to finally meet you though. I’m Adris, by the way. Or just Sabrae if you want.”
“Sabrae?” Miriel quirked a brow, recognising the clan name from both her books and Varric’s tales of the Champion. “You’re a Marcher?”
“Nah,” she hummed, “I’d only just got my Vallaslin when the clan moved north, barely more than a child. Decided I’d rather take my chances with the Blight than follow my clan across the Waking Sea.”
There was more to it than she was letting on, Miriel could tell. It explained her accent at least. “And now you’re a Jenny.”
Adris shrugged, “It’s fun, and it makes a difference in little ways. What’s not to love? Besides falling of rooves.”
“I’m never going to hear the end of that, am I?”
“Nope.” Adris grinned a wide, toothy grin and Miriel found herself smiling back despite herself. When was the last time she’d made a new friend, truly? “So. Gonna let me take you home or are you too big for that, Herald?”
Miriel grimaced at the title, “Just Miriel, please.”
“Apologies, your holiness~”
Oh, she was going to hit this elf before long, she just knew it.

So.. In most videogames, you have the "journal" where you keep codices, quests, character details.. Etc. So here are some of my personal journal-keeping troupes for various videogame MCs!
Dark urge, BG3-
Memory issues. They want to keep a record of everything while it's still fresh in their head.. As someone who struggles with a lot of short term memory loss, and has blocked out a lot of my childhood due to various traumas, I understand a lot of the fear and panic that comes with not remembering things. Not to mention the severe head trauma Orin caused to Durge, they'd probably continue to have memory problems throughout the rest of their life, even after the whole ordeal with the netherbrain.
The Warden, Dragon age: Origins-
I feel like someone gave the Warden an empty journal before they left with Duncan.. For my personal playthrough, I believe it was Hahren Paivel, elder of clan Sabrae. He was far from a mentor, but he was there when my Warden was born. He watched her learn and grow among her cousins, Merrill and Tamlen. He watched them play, and fight. He watched her rival with her best friend, and he watched her get hurt, and leave. Judged her actions no more than he praised her victories.. She had always been so invested in their stories, and learning about their culture. And while Paivel had never had such a respectful child, willing to listen and learn.. He also had never seen one so stuck in a past that they had barely lived themselves. I feel like Paivel wanted her to focus on making new stories of the dalish, and record her own adventures, rather than simply mourning being away from home.
Rhen, Aveyond 1-
I feel like she always kept a journal, but wanted to record everything even more after she was kidnapped. After all, it all started with her trying to find a way home, rather than anything else. I feel like she wanted to record a diary, in case she died, so that her parents would know what happened. Or perhaps, as an optimist, she wanted to keep it so she could show everyone back at Clearwater when she finally returned home. To tell stories of her adventures.
Hawke, da2-
Firm belief that Hawke didn't keep a journal. Ever. Their bestie Varric wrote his book about the hero of kirkwall, and Hawke wrote sassy commentary in the margins.
The inquisitor, DAI-
I feel like the inquisitor is just a massive fucking nerd at heart, and would definitely go on a lecture style rant every half hour if they weren't so goddamn stressed and tired all the time. I headcannon that my personal inquisitor used to work at the Black emporium, acquiring various old relics and shit for the job because they genuinely just loved learning about things, so they record and catalog everything.
Darc and Kharg, Arc the lad: twilight of the spirits-
Darc doesn't keep a journal, he's too much for that. Always in a rush for the next step, hot blooded and ambitious. Plus, he's traumatized and doesn't want to remember shit.- I feel like if anyone in his group kept a journal, it would probably be Volk- But not just any journal. He would probably use one that his wife or children kept before they had died. One that smells like his family. Maybe he feels like he's carrying on a pass time they enjoyed, and puts aside his desire for revenge for the night just to feel close to his family again before bed.
Kharg on the other hand is such a flamboyant little princess who thinks everything he does is important that I wholeheartedly believe he would keep a journal just because he thinks people are going to care enough to read it in a library one day. Bro is so full of himself that it's actually insane. Fuck you, Kharg.

it is more unusual that Inquisitor Lavellan has their clan name as their surname than it is for a Dalish to not go by a last name.
Dalish last names even within a clan are not always their clan name; they're not even the names of other clans. Not all members of a clan even have surnames that we know.
The Dalish clans were formed by lords of the Dales who took their people and, guarded by some Emerald Knights, left the Dales during the Exalted Marches. The clan names come from the lords of the Dales, and some of the surnames we know are from descendents of the knights.
But Strife doesn't have a last name that we know of; he is a Starkhaven elf who joined clan Morlyn. Irelin is part of the same clan, and we are not introduced to her as Irelin Morlyn. We don't know her last name at all, if she has one. Merrill doesn't go by "Merrill Sabrae." In addition, the clan she came from is Clan Alerion; if she has a surname it probably would have been from that clan. Mahariel was not the name of Mahariel's clan; it was clan Sabrae. I think we don't even know if there is a clan named Mahariel; Mahariel's surname has another origin, confirmed to be an Emerald Knight. Tamlen doesn't have a surname. Pol doesn't have a surname that we know of.
Velanna doesn't have a surname that we know of; she left her clan. Neria and Cillian do not go by the name of their clan, Ralaferin. Keeper Gisharel of Clan Ralaferin does not go by a surname. Minaeve goes by no surname. Shirallas left his clan and has no surname.
We don't know all of the naming conventions or the Dalish. We don't know under what conditions they take new surnames, we don't know under what conditions clan names are given as surnames, we don't know how surnames are inherited. It is more special and unusual for us as players to know the surname of someone Dalish. It is significant that Mahariel and Lavellan have surnames; it is significant that a certain Dalish companion has a surname. It is wild to draw conclusions about a Dalish companion who doesn't have a surname.
jumping to "that character could be a Lavellan or a Mahariel" seems like a lack of understanding of how Dalish names in these games have worked. Again, Mahariel wasn't the name of a Clan as far as we know; Warden Mahariel's father was Keeper Mahariel - of Clan Sabrae. If this characters last name is Mahariel, it would have 0 relation to your Warden - a cousin, sibling, or other relative that your Warden had no knowledge of. It seems even more random for it to be Sabrae. If Clan Lavellan was massacred 10 years prior to the events of DA4, which is a possibility for many world states, the character in question would have had to leave that clan in search of derring-do more than 10 years ago, and... he doesn't seem that old? He has vallaslin, which happens when you come of age. So how long ago was that really? And we know that the DAI Dalish tattoos are back in this game, but this characters vallaslin is not from those patterns. And it seems *remarkably* cruel writing for this character, who people are already upset for being another "I think the Dalish are backwards" Dalish character, to be a survivor of a massacred clan. 😩
People are so desperate for the little connections back to the past games even when they make very little sense. Be excited for the new, explore the lore and be excited for the unknown possibilities out there. We are already getting so much in terms of cameos and callbacks, and that's just from what we know of publicly now. Let's learn about clans and cultures from a part of the world we have not visited frequently. There are more clans out there than the two we have come from as previous PCs.
(I am making this non-rebloggable because I did not rigorously cite sources, but @/Felassan and @/dalishious have made great posts about elven and Dalish naming conventions with sources cited very elegantly)

The real reason the death of Clan Sabrae in DA2 doesn't work well narratively, imo, is that it relies on Video Game Logic, for an event whose emotional impact does not mesh well with that logic.
It is true that in both other Dragon Age games, its possible for a Dalish clan to be wiped out. In Origins, this happens if the Warden sides with the werewolves, taking them as allies in the Blight instead and killing the clan. The in-universe ethics of this decision aside, it is both deliberate and plausible. The warden chooses to side with the werewolves, and with their help kills the elves.
In Inquisition, failure at any point along a complex line of war table ops results in the death of all or most of Clan Lavellan. Since Inquisitor Lavellan is the only one who gets that op line, this outcome is likely an accident--a tragedy, but plausible in this scenario where the Inquisitor is trying to deal with a very delicate situation from afar with limited information.
But in Dragon Age 2, what happens is that Hawke and Merrill emerge from the cave on Sundermount following Marethari's death to find a group of elves from Merrill's clan demanding that she explain herself and what happened to their Keeper. The only way Hawke can prevent them from attacking is by taking personal responsibility for Merrill's actions, in a line that implies they disapprove of what she's done (which not all Hawkes will). That's not the implausible part; the elves are upset and frightened of Merrill, and they blame her for the death of their Keeper.
Where Video Game Logic comes in is that Hawke and Merrill and co. have no option to retreat. They can't flee. They can't take a different route down the mountain to avoid the rest of the clan. Because in DA2, when a character turns hostile you have no choice but to fight back and kill them. Even when, realistically, it would make a lot more sense to flee than to intentionally take on a whole clan of elves with a party of four. Because it's a video game, we understand that Hawke & co. are capable of winning that fight, and because Hawke is the player character we understand that some Hawkes would do that. But I do think that Merrill would do pretty much anything to avoid have to kill her entire extended family, even when they've turned on her, even when they're trying to force her hand, and furthermore a Hawke who cares about Merrill would likely want to avoid it for her sake. Again, not all Hawkes would. But there is certainly a potential incentive to flee that is not an option in the game.
And like, I get all the reasons why that is; a certain amount of Video Game Logic is always necessary in, well, a video game, and DA2 was made under the kind of constraints that don't always allow for as many player options, so I get it. I just kind of wanted to break down why the circumstances under which Clan Sabrae can be wiped out bug me more than the circumstances of the other two games.

because some of my poor friends are struggling to keep up with 10+ year of Dragon Age OC lore that only existed in my head so far:
DA Origins
Alythess Cousland Rogue, Warden, Hero of Ferelden, the canon protagonist (LI Alistair, becomes Queen)
Elros Mahariel of the Sabrae Rogue, not a warden, joined the party post-Ostagar, father to Serilyel (no LI)
DA 2
Garrett Hawke Warrior, Champion, the canon protagonist (LI Anders)
Marian Hawke Rogue, Garrett's twin, largely unknown (no LI)
DA Inquisition
Ekaterine "Ekko" Trevelyan Mage, Inquisitor, Herald of Andraste, the canon protagonist, half-elf (LI Cullen)
Serilyel Mahariel of the Lavellan Rogue, Regent (right hand of the Inquisitor), Elros' daughter, Ekko's half-sister (LI Solas)

“Dearest Mi’Var,
As you may suspect, the contents of this correspondence must remain of the utmost secrecy. I shall get straight to the point. In response to your inquiry: it is true. I was of Clan Sabrae, and I was Ethlas Mahariel.
I have spent many seasons wondering if we would ever connect again. I have spent just as many wondering what I might say to you if we ever did. I don’t think there are words enough to explain my choices, nor enough to convey my deepest apologies.
I wish I could tell you that the secrecy of my identity was a selfless one. That it was a sacrifice for the Clan’s safety. That’s what I told myself in the beginning. In truth, I was afraid. Afraid of facing the Clan again. I failed our Keeper once; I scarce thought she would wish to hear from me again. Yet in doing so, I failed you twice. And for this I apologize. I can’t imagine the grief you must have felt.
I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me, but I shan’t expect it.
Enclosed, you will find a relic of our people. It is an Elvhen sending stone, created to connect two souls across space. If I may make one request of you, I ask you to please use it. I wish to hear your voice again... I miss you terribly.
May June’s fire keep your blade ever sharp, Ethlas Atheranion Mahariel”
— A letter from Warden-Commander Elias to Inquisitor Brielle Lavellan

With how important Clan Sabrae became to the story of DAO and DA2 (and how much information we gain of Elvhenan through small details), I think it would've been amazing for the elven inquisitor to be from this clan instead of lavellan. Specially with a certain egg, the eluvians, and the Temple of Mythal. It could've added more weight to their background story.

@febuwhump Day 13: Forced to Hurt a Loved One
Fandom: Dragon Age Whumpee:  Female Lavellan (and also Solas a lil?)
Summary: Solas becomes an Abomination, and Lavellan is forced to kill him.
AO3 Link
~~*———————————————*~~
Part of her knew how it would end. Solas himself had always warned her what happened to spirits whose purpose was corrupted, and if he was Fen’harel that made him a spirit, no? The whole thing still didn’t make sense, but part of her always knew he was leading himself to this end.
The Fade was disorienting as ever, the ground shifting and rumbling beneath her, but she scarcely had a second to notice it. Solas was standing before her, his face twisted into a sickening snarl. Extra eyes shifted and darted across her body like he scarcely recognised her, his hands hardening into scaled claws before her eyes.
“Don’t make me do this, Solas.” Though she tried to keep the same firm authority in her voice that she always did as Inquisitor, the choke of her breath on the lump in her throat betrayed her. The shake in her arm’s crossbow attatchment as she pointed it square at his face. The tears blurring her vision.
Her words were in vain. As the green sky shifted above her and the island they floated on shifted below, Solas’ features shifted too. His arms twisted and cracked, skin parting and clothes ripping as he grew and morphed into something entirely different. His face bulged and mutated, bone and scales and spikes tearing through skin; two great horns erupting from his forehead. His legs bent and cracked out of shape, forcing him onto all fours as his spine, too, twisted and elongated; a great spiked tail tearing forth.
A Pride demon. Solas had mutated into some kind of Pride demon. An abomination. Miriel’s heart pounded, staring into so many wild, lost eyes. He seemed almost sad, but his scaled lips pulled back to show his pointed teeth in a furious snarl. He lunged to bite. Miriel closed her eyes and fired her crossbow with a pained yell.
The yell carried, echoing off of stone as the fade shifted once more -- no, wait. Her bedroom. This was her new bedroom in Orlais. She felt for her arm and was relieved to find her stub: the crossbow wasn’t attached.
“Nightmares again?” Adris’ voice. When did she get here? “Heard you crying out in your sleep, came in through the window, sorry,” she quickly explained.
“Again--” How often did she shout in her sleep? She still kept forgetting she didn’t sleep far apart from anyone else, these days. “It’s nothing, just-..”
“You’ve been through a lot,” Adris reasoned, “It’s understandable. Wanna talk about it?”
“I’m-..” Miriel hesitated, drawn to silence by her fellow Dalish’s concerned, soft eyes. “I dreamed of my lover. Ex-lover, I suppose.”
“Solas, right? The mage who turned out to be--”
“Fen’harel, yes.”
Adris nodded slowly. Miriel wasn’t sure how much Sera had said about the Evanuris, but she didn’t seem bothered by Solas’ existence at least. “What happened?”
“I dreamed-.. he was corrupted. Turned into a Pride Demon, I-.. had to kill him.”
Another understanding nod, moving to sit on the bed now that Miriel was awake. She rested a hand gently over Miriel’s stump arm; a soothing gesture that was far more comforting than she was expecting. “I’m sorry he left you like that. I can’t imagine-.. well. I’m here, alright? If you ever want to talk about it. You know where I live.”
“Thank you, Adris,” she sighed. Perhaps new friends were needed after all.

current notes for au. Needs feedback.
Grey Warden's as the guardians.
Duncan - ignitus
Amell - cyril (they technically don't need to have the same personality, plus i constantly used ice spells when playing this origin).
Alistair - unassigned (yellow?)
Oghren - unassigned (green?)
White haired/eyed mages are most powerful mages. Hawke is one of them in story by birth. Technically a hedge mage as well (will learn spirit healer from Amell). Already born by the time the story starts, roughly a year or two older, with the twins being born at the beginning of the story.
Mabari as sparx
Fenris will at least be 16 or 18 by the time he gets the markings (we're not doing the same thing Malefor did with Cynder, which is make her his most powerful ally as soon as she hatched).
Danarius becomes a white mage by absorbing the power of a fallen archdemon?
Hunter and avalon will be dalish characters (or should we make apostate camps? No, keep the dalish, more flexible and fitting. We already have enough mages).
Arishok as the villain of the second TLOS game?
May need to re-watch TLOS 1 and 2 to better understand what I am working with (already have game 3. May replay once I get there).
The dalish in question for Avalon Sabrae clan or dalish inquisitor clan? (Don't have inquisition currently and will have minimal knowledge).
Feedback and suggestions appreciated.

Yvair Viriselan, of Clan Lavellan
Dalish rogue, skilled particularly in archery and tracking. While known to be sarcastic and rather flirtatious, Yvair genuinely is bighearted deep down and prone to self-sacrificial tendencies. Despite being overall a 'proud' Dalish, his beliefs could be considered more agnostic than faithful. While not blindly trusting of humans, Yvair is more willing than some Dalish to allow every human to make their own impression instead of outright assuming ill intent. Canon world state features him as Inquisitor, but a companion verse can be requested.
Tumblr media
Sebastian Vael, Prince of Starkhaven
Devote Andrastian who despite his strong faith may be considered openminded, or critical of how the Chantry functions at times. He wants to be able to help those in need of it, and can struggle against making rash decisions. Defaults to friendship path, request if intended rivaled.
Tumblr media
Elgaris Viriselan, of Clan Lavellan
Born initially to Clan Viriselan, after her magical capabilities unlocked Elgaris moved to Clan Lavellan alongside her older brother to take on the responsibility of learning to one day become a Keeper. Unlike her brother, Elgaris genuinely believes in the Evanuris. She is lighthearted and optimistic to the point some people may consider her to be naive. Defaults to First of Clan Lavellan, willing to play as Second to another Lavellan.

Tamlen, of Clan Sabrae
Raised a proud Dalish, Tamlen is wary of every human until given a good reason not to be. Doomed by his curious nature, the warrior ended up Blighted and conscripted to take on the Blight despite his protests. While he fought against the idea up until his Joining, Tamlen proves to be a great addition to the Warden's ranks. Canon worldstate has him stubbornly become the Hero of Ferelden due to delivering the killing blow to the Archdemon-- if his life is spared in the act, he is out of the loop as to how.

Fejin Mahariel, of Clan Sabrae
Fejin is morally grey-- someone who isn't concerned if they need to spill blood to get their job done. However as long as it is in their abilities, they will do their best to aid those less fortunate than them. Unfortunately for anyone who is better off, especially if they prove a terrible person, Fejin is not above thievery or other criminal activities. Usually an alternative to Tamlen, but happy to write it where both had survived.

Merrill Alerion, of Clan Sabrae
Despite turning to blood magic in an attempt to fix the eluvian that cost her the lives of her closest friends (be they dead or simply taken from the Clan), Merrill is nice to nearly everyone unless given a very good reason not to be. She seeks knowledge of her people's past and many may consider her naive or stupid, views she doesn't always try to correct. In some cases she'll lean into that belief and use it as an opportunity to troll or otherwise mess with those around her.

Archex, Tal-Vashoth
When it became clear that Archex was going to face re-education due to not quite conforming to what the Qun wanted of him, he took off despite having no idea of what to do with himself after gaining his freedom. In due time, the Qunari happens across a merchant under attack by bandits and steps in to save his life. The human befriends him, even taking him in as family and helps Archex eventually adjust to life as a Ferelden. Verse set for Inquisition, but happy to work out something for any other timeframe.

4. What does your worldstate look like going into DAV?
i'll try to stick to major choices and stuff relevant for my little guys. SO
dao: keeris mahariel, romanced alistair who stayed with the wardens; anora is the queen of ferelden, bhelen is the king of orzammar, the anvil was destroyed, the werewolf curse was lifted & the circle was saved. avernus is doing his weird blood magic somewhere, the architect was killed and amaranthine was burned. she's presumably still alive and kicking for the dark ritual reasons
da2: garrett hawke, romanced anders, sided with mages; carver is all grown up and doing serious grey warden business, arishok is dead and isabela got reinstated as a bestie, clan sabrae is alive, merrill kept her mirror, anders is also alive. it's hard to tell if he's kicking but that will do
things get a little complicated with dai because i have two inquisitors with the same worldstate previous games-wise (i wanted to make another warden & hawke for my girl yerrith but. it's been 4 years and i still haven't. i mean it's still not too late and i gotta finish that aeducan playthrough. but for now it is what it is) and i still haven't decided who is going into datv soup first. anyway.
dai 1.0: mahanon lavellan, romanced dorian; recruited mages, sacrificed alistair, the wardens joined the inquisition, celene and briala rule together, morrigan drank from the well. leliana is the divine, inquisition became a peacekeeping organization, solas is getting redeemed against his own will because mahanon is such a good soul
dai 2.0: yerrith lavellan, romanced solas; recruited mages, sacrificed hawke, the wardens were exiled, briala rules through gaspard, yerrith drank from the well herself. leliana is the divine, inquisition was disbanded, solas is getting redeemed this time for all the wrong reasons
probably gotta go with mahanon even though i really would like to see the consequences of solavellan situationship firsthand but he's just so special like that. he's just a little guy but my rook is so about to have an unreasonable beef with him and the idea of it is so funny to me i simply can't resist
the veilguard hype q&a
