So, to start with, the explanation for why I think this scene in particular is more illuminating than all of SQQ's interactions with actual LBH. 

That's because there's not a single scene in the novel where his interactions with LBH-the-person are not colored by pre-existing bias of already being obsessed with LBH-the-character. Like, consider the scene where he appraises Shen Qingqiu's looks, and finishes it off with:

He still couldn’t compare to Luo Binghe. (vol.1, ch.1)

despite not having seen Luo Binghe in person yet. But no, he's already convinced his beloved blorbo is of course The Handsomest Ever!

Simply speaking, we never encounter Shen Yuan pre-Binghe Syndrome (when instead of brain there's binghe). So it's difficult to tell whether any particular way he thinks or feels in Binghe’s presence is the standard for him, or owed to the fact that he already likes Binghe in at least one way.

But the same can not be said of Liu Qingge: while SY did have some interest in his character, he didn’t really think of him before encountering him in Lingxi Caves. Plus, unlike Binghe who seems to have fully aligned with SQQ’s expectations of him, LQG had given him a little shock — which prompted some re-evaluation of his prev thoughts on SQQ's part.

Now is a good time to mention that I arrived at thinking about this scene while considering Shen Yuan's relationship with toxic masculinity — and remembering I jotted down 'Shen Yuan's fascination with masculinity' in my reread notes for this scene.

[Bai Zhan Peak] was the most warlike of Cang Qiong Mountain's branches, as well as the branch with the greatest martial ability. Every single generation's Bai Zhan Peak Lord was a world-class swordmaster, a victor of countless battles, an undefeated legend. How hot-blooded—how dashing!  Male readers always fervently admired strong characters. Even though Liu Qingge never officially debuted on page, he hadn't lacked for fans, and Shen Yuan had been especially fascinated with him. In his headcanon, Liu Qingge had been a sharp and manly man, powerful and magnificent. A war god, right?! (vol.1, ch.2)

So, Shen Yuan’s fascination with Liu Qingge’s character — or rather his headcanon version of it — is about Liu Qingge being someone who (in SY’s mind) embodies masculine qualities. And what qualities are those? From this section, being “strong” (has to be physically powerful) and “undefeated” (can’t be a loser) — yeah, pretty standard toxic masc starting kit. 

And something of interest here: though SQQ describes it mostly as his own feelings, even in this excerpt, he slips in a “male readers always [...] admired” — which, when considering everything else we know about his relationship to masculinity, kind of gives off an insecurity vibe. He seems to be either trying to justify his own feelings (i.e., ‘other men feel the same way, i’m in-group not out-group, i’m not failing at being a man by feeling this way [admiring another man]’), or else emulating other male fans and trying to convince himself he relates to the story the same way they do (i.e., ‘male readers admire strong characters and im a man therefore i definitely also admire the same things’).

Speaking of emulating other male fans, there’s another quality that SY seems to associate with masculinity, this one not very related to Liu Qingge — though SQQ does make a mental detour into it in the same scene, when talking about other Peaks.

Yeah, when he mentions Xian Shu, and the fact that the popularity of self-insert erotic/lewd fics about Xian Shu "compared to that of the original work” in PIDW fandom, or possibly even in general on ‘Zhongdian’ (since afaik you can publish fanfiction on Chinese webnovel sites alongside original works, you just have to tag it as such). In other words, among male fans. 

But we know SY doesn’t like sex scenes, right? Hell, his favorite wife is Liu Mingyan at least in part because she doesn’t have sex scenes:

There was one more appeal factor. Liu Mingyan was the only female character for whom Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky didn't write detailed sex scenes. (vol.1, ch.2)

Of course… that’s what SQQ says in his head where nobody can hear him. We actually have evidence of him singing a different tune when among other fans:

Most of the female protagonists are stupid sexy lamps, and the male lead doesn't even bed Liu Mingyan, the only breath of fresh air? He doesn't bed the rightful empress? Are you fucking kidding me? (vol.4, ch.26, part 1)

(speaking of, this is why ‘peerless cucumber is SY’s true self’ takes baffle me. his toxicmascsona is his true self, really?)

So SY has another qualifier for ‘manly man’ in his head: being sexual (of course, in a straight way). Which is not something that comes naturally to him, as evidenced by him cringing away from any actual action even when he tries to emulate the thought pattern, e.g.:

Qi Qingqi? She was indeed slightly junior to him, and their first meeting...he'd long forgotten how it went. "Often together" wasn't quite right, though. Perhaps he at times dared to think about going to Xian Shu Peak so they could be "often together," but while he had the wicked intentions, he lacked the courage required to follow through—and he could never commit an act as depraved as stalking. (vol.4, ch.23) 

Riiiight, SQQ, you totally have those 'wicked intentions' that you merely can't follow through on because you just invented reasons not to.

But that does give us an image of SY’s ideal of masculinity. Extremely powerful, undefeatable, and hypersexual… yeah no points for guessing who. I’m pretty sure SQQ even directly equates Bing-ge with masculinity somewhere, I just can’t remember the exact spot. And he also believes that any man should definitely want to be in Bing-ge’s place, like for example here:

Every man dreamed of being caught between an angel and a devil. To watch them jealously vie with each other over him one moment, then risk life and limb for his sake in the next—that was the highest, most sacred, perverted fantasy of every male organism.  (vol.1, ch.2)

…though I must note, once again, “every man”, “every male organism” — but does SQQ actually feel the same way? I think that the answer is he thinks that he should, and is trying to convince himself that he does.

Which must be difficult considering he finds men more attractive than women, returning back to that scene with Liu Qingge.

In any other state, Shen Qingqiu might have declared, "What a beautiful man!" (vol.1, ch.2)

Really bestie? You would've declared it? Because I don't see you show the same enthusiasm about women. In fact, you usually jump right into how they were described in the novel, as if you don't have your own opinion. 

Now, I must note that I personally don’t think finding someone attractive equals actually being attracted to them. But this does imply which way SQQ's tastes veer. In fact, we can even see that he has a type. First, he describes LQG's face as "as beautiful as a fine woman's"; then adds:

This was clearly the face of a charming young master who arranged flowers and plucked farewell willow branches! (vol.1, ch.2)

Of course, if we are talking about charming young masters with feminine looks, their bearing that of a classic Chinese gentleman (warrior-scholar ideal who’d ‘pluck farewell willow branches’)...

That firm yet humble countenance, demonstrating his noble and unyielding spirit. That pencil-straight back and stance, evincing a proud core that would rather break than bend! (vol.1, ch.1)

[SQQ] saw a glimpse of the future Luo Binghe's unique grace, that of "eyes like cold stars, a soft and radiant smile, with muted words and quiet laughter." (vol.1, ch.1)

In truth, deep down, Bing-ge's fair and clean pretty-boy type didn't really suit the tastes of "Great Master" Airplane Flying Towards the Sky. He had only assigned this sort of configuration to the protagonist to meet his stallion hardware specifications. The art of growing stallions was grounded in science, and the research was clear: women preferred men who looked cultured, pretty, and even a bit soft and feminine. (vol.4, ch.26, part 2)

…there’s no question who is superlative in SQQ’s heart. To boot, he doesn’t even realize that he’s biased about LBH’s attractiveness, as we can see from Airplane-bro’s musings above. So that’s Cucumber-bro’s type: cultured, pretty, a bit feminine.

See, a fun little discrepancy here: what SQQ sees as a masculine ideal and therefore can admire plainly — again, powerful, undefeatable, and hypersexual, — and what he finds attractive in a man, under all those layers of denial, are two pretty different things.

Liu Qingge, despite his appearance unveiling a side of both to us, doesn’t actually fully embody either type: on the masculinity side, he is missing the hypersexuality, on the attractiveness side, his looks fit but his bearing doesn’t match.

But you know who hits all of SY’s qualifications on both counts?.. yeah, once again no points for guessing, it stars with "Bing" and ends with "ge".

So: the source of Shen Yuan’s obsession with LBH-the-character is the intersection of those two factors. Like you know that old wlw joke “I can’t tell if I wanna be her or date her”? Thats Shen Yuan with Luo Binghe, but, yknow, unconsciously. He admires LBH as an epitome of masculinity, an image of a Perfect Male to strive for; he also very much finds him attractive in a gay way. 

In fact, I would even say that an important component of Binghe brainrot is that he is an acceptable target for admiration. How can SY be accused of being gay over liking a horny stallion novel? So it’s totally normal that he thinks of Binghe a lot, obviously that’s just because he looks up to him! Because Binghe is such a perfect iteration of a male stallion protagonist! Who wouldn’t want to be in his place, thinks Shen Yuan, never ever having imagined being in Binghe’s place even once. Ofc that’s only because Binghe got insane game though! Shen Yuan couldn’t hope to compare. LBH is just so admirable and sexy,, for the wives of course, the wives find him sexy, not Shen Yuan, Shen Yuan is just stating facts— etcetcetc.

Point is, LBH is a man that Shen Yuan can like without shame, because he has a whole bag of above-the-board reasons to prove that he's not liking him the wrong way. A perfect target of convergence for Shen Yuan’s conscious and unconscious thoughts (and desires).

And this is how SY ended up with the years-long hyperfix we see in the beginning of the novel.

directors cut u KNOW im askin abt some weird sin baybee! tell me all abt it

What an insane undertaking that was! I remember when the premise occurred to me, I was walking down Michigan Avenue back in September of 2022 and it just fell out of the sky: "What if Vincent Hanna and Neil McCauley actually met each other right here in Chicago instead of passing each other like ships in the night? And what if Vincent thought Neil was an undercover cop, and Neil thought Vincent was a fellow thief?" It's the closest I've ever come to writing something approaching a film script, and looking back over it the amount of plot engineering and dialogue involved was bananas. It is still at its core a romance, but it required me to dip my toes in other forms of genre writing that were totally foreign to me until I committed to seeing it through. I still have no idea how I managed!

Writing a brand-new diner scene from scratch was by far the most intimidating thing I've ever done in the fandom. It's such a perfect scene the way Mann has it in the original, so how the hell was I gonna replicate that chemistry under such radically different circumstances? I took a purely symbolic tack with respect to their domestic failures (hence the dollhouse story), and since Vincent was not surveilling/pursuing Neil on the job what was a tense pseudo-interrogation became a game of omission between the two of them. That scene at Lake Michigan with the sun rising was meant to mirror/invert the one where Neil returns home at twilight and sets his gun on the table, because I can't write a Mann fic and not insert a large body of water for the protagonist(s) to contemplate.

But my favorite chapter is actually the one where they reunite at the bar, because there are three levels of conversation happening simultaneously: the one Neil thinks he is having with Vincent, the one Vincent pretends to be having with Neil, and the one Vincent is actually having with Neil (known only to himself). Every line has multiple layers of meaning, because at that moment Vincent has figured out who and what Neil actually is, and Neil still thinks he's dealing with one of his own. Vincent goes from flirting to speaking in grim jokes and double-entendres, hinting at his fear that Neil will go ballistic on him once he realizes that Vincent is actually a cop:

“I don’t know if I’m supposed to say ‘thank you’ to that.” “Oh. Please. Don’t thank me. But it is a compliment.” “That’s right. I forgot. Yours are the kind should come with a manual.” “Wouldn’t want you getting the wrong idea.” “That’s new.” “I just get the feeling you’re not the kind of guy who’s real comfortable with ambiguities, you know? Uncertainty. Spontaneity. Shit gets weird, life throws you curve balls, you walk across the field, beat the umpire to death with the bat.”

But the best part of "Some Weird Sin" for me as a writer and Heat obsessive was the excuse it gave me to play around with Nate as a supporting character. I will now look for any excuse to shoehorn him into a fic. He's the Mr. Deadpan Straight Man to Neil's infatuated romantic/gangster entrepreneur, and the conversations they have were some of my favorites to write:

Neil stops reading. He knows the rest. “We could frame it,” he says, pointing to where an assortment of commissioned lithographs presides over rows of gleaming bottles, portraits of outlaw blues legends and romantic Hollywood renegades. “Put it up behind the bar.” “You’re a comedian now, too.” Nate’s expression is unchanged. “A Renaissance man.” “Tough crowd in here.”

I never knew I could have so much fun writing something so challenging. And because I can't resist putting myself through the wringer a second time, I am already halfway done with a two-part epilogue. Coming soon to an AO3 theater near you!

I really like the ship klamon but the thing is i haven't a clue on how it could fit in canon. I'm like thinking of a gradual thing where they're like slowly going from enemies? to allies to frenemies to lovers, (all the stages filled with appropriate sass, sarcasm and bickering ofcourse) because I'm a sucker for slowburns. Like they are somewhere between allies and frenemies in TVD and then in TO they finally get together. Do you have any ideas on how this could happen in canon. And how to stick klamon in 'The Originals'? And how it would change the plot?

Okay, so. You know how Alaric was possessed by Klaus that one time? That would make a good beginning. Give him an up close and more personal perspective on Damon, who he'd only know via rep and Stefan before this. I mean I think he'd mostly considered Damon someone who was Katherine's toy and was still dogging after doppelgangers (Elena) at that point? But in Alaric's body, he'd be a bit closer, have a measure of trust. So Damon wouldn't be quite as in-ur-face-fuck-you as he would have been. (I mean. Still, a little, bc I think he's allergic to showing genuine emotion at that point, at least under normal circumstances, he let his guard down around Elena a lot more) So mayyybe Damon kidnaps AlariKlaus to try and find out more on Big Bad Klaus??? Research spree, contacts some witches whatevs. They probably hit a bunch of dead ends, evenif they did manage to find a lead, AlariKlaus would nip that shit in the bud. Just trailing along, having fun listening to his own legend and watching Damon get more and more frustrated.

Maybe they learn more about what Klaus did to Katherine or someone else or a hundred other stories where he'd taken revenge on a person and burned down their entire life. And Damon, annoyed and doing that im-not-joking-but-people-will-assume-i-am thing alludes to his Augustine revenge spree. Maybe something along the lines of like 'yeah, well, that's not special, I've done similar. Just ask-*insert massacre here*' Which. Alaric would not connect those dots. He'd think it some kind of joke in poor taste. Klaus? Connects a few. He'd heard about it. Those deaths had obviously been a vampire, but no one had known who. Until now.

Damon is suddenly a little bit more interesting.

And he's got to have some kind of hobby so he starts trying to unravel Damon Salvatore. Starts paying attention to him. Does a good job of acting friendly, but starts shedding a little of Ric. Then a little more, less on purpose. Starts fucking with his head, making him second guess his relationships, make him question if he's still chasing after Katherine by trying to protect Elena. All under the guise of pretending to be his friend.

Wow this got a lil dark.

Anyways. Canon. Except Damon has to contend with the fact that he'd liked the person he'd thought he was becoming close with. And that person is not who he thought he was. And Klaus is still studying Damon, who he now knows better and maybe holds a bit more regard for.

i ADORED Legends & Lattes, so i went into this one pretty sure i would love it too. no surprise, i did! just so fucking charming! cozy, even! let's have more of the cozy fantasy trend please, i'm very into it! and as a former bookseller (and future bookstore owner, maybe, someday), of course i got such a kick out of the whole premise. i want to be Fern when i grow up T^T

it was very fun getting to see a younger Viv, early in her mercenary career, and witnessing the origins of some of the life we get as her backstory in L&L! Fern (owner of the titular bookshop) was absolutely wonderful, perfect, exquisite, insert that Lady Gaga gif here. i loved almost all of the secondary characters who cropped up in Murk too, a very fun little ensemble cast! i went in not knowing who to expect popping up so i won't spoil it, but one familiar face was a delight to get to know in this different way.

though regarding secondary characters i have to say, i was not convinced by Maylee and the summer fling romance plotline--i didn't hate it or anything, it just wasn't interesting to me, and i felt a bit like it had more weight put on it than the chemistry warranted or needed. this opinion brought to you by "my predictable aroace opinions," so take it with a grain of salt.

what i did appreciate was that regardless of the romance subplot going on, the friendship between Viv and Fern was really central and stayed really central! they met each other at just the right transitional time to each help provide what the other needed, which is such a specific and beautiful kind of friendship. situational, time-bound, but it's the kind of relationship that sit for decades on a back burner and then be resumed or revisited with great fondness and ease. it's not a kind of friendship i see a lot in fiction!

how i read it: the physical paperback, in my hot little hands! still my favorite way to read a book, even though i do less of it than electronic reading overall.

OK SO, this list is literally all over the place, these aren’t really in any particular order and I confess that for a few of them I actually read them a while ago/I don’t remember some very well. We Are Each Our Own Devil by victoria_kay Alright, this one first and foremost. This one literally lives rent free in my head. Do NOT let me get started on this one I am capable of talking about it for paragraphs upon paragraphs. It was the first YS fic I read, it also happens to be the first instance of me ever using Ao3's download button. I have to say, I usually prefer genfic over romance but this is one of my exceptions bc the writing is That Good. Tanya & Lergen are easily top favorite characters for me and here they are!! Interacting!!! We love to see it. Slowly watching them grow and sdfghjdfgh. I've read this fic in full more than once and now that I have it downloaded I frequently go back and reread some of my favorite parts. god. ok ok. time to move on.

A Young Girl's Guerrilla War by Ragnarthesemigreen Long fic, Code Geass crossover. I literally did not remember most of Code Geass when i read it, but I still thoroughly enjoyed this fic. I marathoned this fic over the course of like a week maybe(?) over a month or so ago so specific details are a bit lost but i remember loving it. I wanna reread it again soon.

A Young Woman's Political Record by jacobk You cannot have a Youjo Senki fic rec list without this one. I don’t actually use spacebattles, but I finally went on there recently to see what the hype was about. This is another one I marathoned over the course of a few days simply bc i could not stop reading, so suffice to say it did live up to my expectations.

A Young Girl's Weaponization of the Mythos by Zahariel_Scholar AAA I love mythos aus so much. I made fan art for this one actually. It’s great writing, the author switches it up between epistolary style writing and character POVs which is really fun structurally. It’s an ongoing fic so its nice to have something to tune into on a regular basis

As for my own fics, I have a bunch of them kinda half-written but unfortunately I haven’t actually finished or posted any of them yet;;; orz. Tanya’s Peculiar Behaviors This isn’t really one fic, but more like a group of one-shots. Basically I try to see how much out of character I can get away with while still remaining relatively plausible/canon-adjacent. I have three sort of half-written one-shots right now, some very quick summaries of each: -- The one where I try to justify Tanya carrying around a stuffed animal; This was a bit inspired by Tanya's Free Time in the recs above -- The one where Tanya has a breakdown after the Brest Naval Base thing; Lergen accidentally catches her crying and is like oh god oh fuck what the hell is wrong with her -- and lastly the one where Tanya uses the type 95 just a bit too much and oops now she’s broken

Untitled/The one where I lock them in a room together Tanya von Degurechaff and Erich von Lergen accidentally get locked in a room together and are forced to have a civil chat to pass the time. Also, Tanya screws up an orb-less communication spell to call for help, and now Lergen can hear what she’s thinking, so that’s less than ideal.

Untitled/The one I’m jokingly calling Child Soldier × Family You could sort of call it a Spy × Family AU? But honestly I think I’d call it more ‘inspired by’ than a proper crossover. Basically, they lose the war, and for spying reasons, Tanya gets adopted and has to go to school to make friends to get intel on their families. Key differences from SxF though: Tanya’s technically the spy and there isn’t any fake-marriage aspect to the story comparable to Loid and Yor’s relationship. Perhaps my favorite part of it, Lergen takes Loid’s role as Father Figure bc both of them share the character trait “frequently gets stomach aches due to the stressful little girl they have to deal with” lmao

This is Heaven and Hell Tanya manages to usurp Being X and takes control of the universe/Being X’s power. If you’ve seen Madoka Magica, the vibes I was aiming for with this one are comparable to the end of the Rebellion movie. Tanya rewrites the universe, everyone’s memories are a little janky, she’s struggling with her newfound status as Literally God, etc. I intended it to be kind of angsty but literally everything I touch somehow becomes a comedy so this thing may get broken into two different versions the funny one and the hopefully more serious one.

To Those Without Power, Sin was Charged That fallen Angel!Tanya au I posted about before. Basically: Tanya is one of the many angels in charge of judging souls for their next reincarnation/eligibility for the afterlife. When they one day express that they don’t believe faith should be a necessary factor in those judgements, they’re cast down to Earth as punishment. Another one where I cant decide whether to go the serious route or the comedy route.

There are quite a few more drafts but those things are either A) probably unlikely to get finished or B) never seeing the light of day if I can help it purely for the reason they’re self indulgent cringe :,)

for one i dont know for me having link as a secret hoarder who would rather DIE than use the full scope of his abilities around OTHER HEROS is just no bc thats fucking stupid levels of wanting to appear normal around OTHER HEROS possiblly the ONLY other ppl to ever understand what u r going through

for me having every single link act like a frat boy/standard teenage white boy who is emotionally constipated is a no??? have u SEEN link he is so sociable and kind and understanding to other ppl WHY r the links like this, so many fics just...make them stew in their issues for angst and not trust the others and be incredibly insecure about the other heros(which is lu canon for at least hyrule and wind i think?) and like ok that is definitely fine for 1 link but why r they all like this in the games link is clearly not like that he wouldn't be this closed off and wouldn't hesitate so much like my dude he just inserts himself into other ppl's lives to make them better than leaves he wouldn't pussyfoot around other heros like what

also another major issue is the mergings just lead to certain characterizations or important backstory for certain links(FOUR. LEGEND.) being completely erased and the nuance of their journeys lost like when u merge links who r canonically 100s of years apart not just in the timeline but in the GAMES? yeah u lose things that make that link special

also bc u mentioned wind waker i found it kinda fucked up that wind waker link was delegated to The Kid TM even tho his entire journey was about moving on from the past to a brighter future and he took on the mantle left behind by the hero of time on his own volition and did what Time COULDN'T do which is kill Ganon but he is constantly underestimated and made into the Kid Who Wants Approval trope specifically around Time which sucks ass ngl he deserves to be an equal him still being a kid while the others got to grow up, including Four who's first journey arguably would have been a better fit for this archtype of wide eyed kid, is just side lining one of the most interesting links especially considering most of the other links were YOUNGER than him when they started

By The Sea, There He'll Be: Prologue

Hello folks! This is my first attempt at a reader's insert fanfic. What is it? An X reader involving Hero Is Back Sun Wukong, mainly my Whale Shark Mermonkey version. This is a slow burn. Can be read as gender neutral or preferred gender.

'Royal Seaheart Town', a small town that can be found nestled between steep cliffs by the sea. A place where merfolk visit in secret from others. Everyone who lives here had watch over these fantastical beings after the town's founder was saved by a nameless Whale Shark Mer when lost at sea.

It's here that these aquatic beings can find refuge in times of need or for a break in between migration points. Whether if it's normal merfolk or the rare Leviathan class, Mers whose size surpass the others of their kind. All were treated with care and respect, just like people.

Back to the mysterious Whale Shark Mer, it became a local legend of sorts. From what the founder wrote in his records, this particular one was completely different from all the others. A aura came off of them similar to powerful royalty, a thick reddish brown coat of some kind strewn across their massive back and some peculiar staff in hand.

Hence where the town got its name from. No one really knows exactly who this mysterious Mer was or if they'll ever appear again. To one particular resident, it isn't on their mind. People call them 'Reader' as they always read something, whether to themselves or others.

All of their tales heir from the inspiration they get when sailing out on the vast sea. To them, something like the legendary whale shark is something you should stumble upon, not seek out. Otherwise these wonders will just evade the seeker.

It was one of those days where Reader set off in hopes to find something to craft their next story. An occurrence that happens frequently when any ideas are near the bottom of an empty barrel. So far...

"Aw man! Not a single interesting." You exclaimed in pure annoyance. Been hours since you set sail on your little house boat, and not a single thing has happened. No dolphins leaping through the water, curious sea life trying to examine your ship, and ridiculously no seagulls. Those birds are very common around the area especially this time of year being a migration season.

All there is the open sea and the cloud less sky. You set up some bait to attract any non hostile animal to see if anything would swim past the see-through screens in the bottom dock. There were three thick windows in total, one on the floor and one on both walls.

So far, not a single thing went for your special homemade bait. A mixture of chum, worms and kelp that you tested to see what sea life would love it. "Maybe I need to change the recipe. Looks I'll have to try again in a few days. A nasty storm will be rolling in soon."

Your ship wasn't something built for rough weather at sea but that isn't the big concern. Sea monsters like to show up during night or when the waters were raging. An easy meal that can go unnoticed from people above and below the ocean.

Getting started about the more dangerous man eating merfolk wouldn't help either. It would be best to head straight back to town. You ran back up deck and started the engine. Only a few hours before night, plenty of time to make it to town.

But you had a bad feeling that something was horribly wrong. One you hope would go away the closer you get to home. 'I don't like this. It's too quiet and calm.' The thought had you setting the ship a bit faster. Calm waves were a bad omen to any sailor after all.

An aura of dread filled the air as the ocean waves suddenly began to move in rough patterns. Your heart sank upon the sky behind you becoming dark under a sheet of unnatural storm clouds and brutal rainfall. This had been enough to set the boat to full speed.

"Fuck! Come on! Go faster!" Whatever was going on isn't a normal storm. Something is behind this and you really didn't want to meet it in person. A sentiment that grew upon seemed to be a large spiny fin moving under the stormy waters.

This is bad, really bad. Only one creature that lived near your town had this particular type of fin. A very nasty Eel Sea Monster known as 'Tyrant'. Well earned from how many ships and merfolk it viciously attacked. It even mauled a Leviathan class Great Shark mer to near death.

Tyrant will easily shred your boat like wet paper. Looking back, you won't be able to make it to town before the eerie storm looms over you. Without wasting anytime, you immediately ran to the little box under the control panels.

Fighting a Sea Monster is suicide, but blinding it should give enough time to escape. A thought that led to purchasing special flash depth charges. Each one capable of releasing strong enough light to temporarily blind any Leviathan class. It should work on Tyrant.

Pulling the first charge out, you quickly ran over to the side of the deck and tossed it in the water where you saw the monster's fin. Within seconds, it went off with a monstrous distorted screech following. Bull's-eye.

Quickly turning the ship away from Tyrant's path, you got ready to set off another charge. The storm now above the small boat, it was harsh but not that dangerous...yet. Bastard recovered quick from how it went to turn towards you.

Immediately tossed another charge and changed the ship's course. Tyrant isn't going to get a meal right now, not if you can do anything about it. Apparently the second charge really pissed off the eel Sea Monster.

Why? Cause it leapt out of the water and straight towards your ship. Razor sharp fangs on full display in the open wide mouth while six eyes bore into your soul with pure hatred. Immediately turned the boat away from inky black beast's jaw as crashed into the water.

The waves created brutally hit the boat, not only sending the blinding charges out of your hand but allow the Tyrant to slam the end of its tail into the hull. A direct hit towards the glass as water quickly begins to pour into the ship.

"Shit!" You were in a really bad situation. Even if you get to the lifeboat, it'll just make it an easier meal for the beast. Staying on the boat however would buy little time... unless you can reach the flare gun.

It wouldn't be effective like the charges but it can buy enough time to go for the life boat and try to reach the little outpost not to far away. There were special charms that would keep sea monsters such as the Tyrant away.

You quickly went to the safe box only to quickly jump away as a long tail slammed into the side of the deck. The blow practically breaking your ship in half but also chucking you into the railing. It hurt but it was at least something to hold onto.

Hurt like a bitch to stand up, even worse to find six enraged eyes staring back with hunger. You were most likely dead but you won't give this asshole fish any satisfaction by being scared. Tyrant is already pissed, might as well be insane and dig yourself deeper.

Grabbing a piece of shattered glass from the deck, you hurl it straight into the monster's bottom right eye. A direct hit from how it shrieked back in absolute pain as it's blood drip into the sea. Tyrant snapped to lunge straight at you. Ready to devour everything in it's line of sight until...

"HOLY FUCKING SHIT..." As a massive wall water shot from underneath the sea monster, the sudden large wave it made practically shoved you into the sea. Whatever Tyrant broke in your tiny body stun even more by the harsh shove of the raging sea. Any further thoughts stopped upon the wall wading away to an unbelievable sight.

The most infamous sea monster of your home town, a creature measured around 50 ft, was in the jaws of an extremely massive Mer. A Whale Shark from the spots you can glimpse through the harsh storm's rain. Not just that but a Leviathan far larger than any Whale Shark Merfolk of the same class, at least a 128 ft in size alone.

The sight didn't last long as the Mer devoured their catch and fell to the sea. Last thing you saw was a tsunami from the mere slap of the massive being's tail. After that, everything became still but you swear that you something soft touch your back.

How much time had been passed since the incident is unknown. The scratchy feeling of sand on skin alongside a light warmth from above. It was enough to stir your conscious to wake up and open your eyes...to a beach.

A long sandy beach that circled around what seem to be tropical jungle trees but not a single sign of civilization anywhere. Only washed up seaweed, crabs and the pieces of what used to be your boat.

You were alive but now stranded on some sort of island. Better than being dead at least.

I written this using Tumblr's drafts instead of the usual Google Docs, so I really don't know how this actually is. A personal experiment you can say.

For this one, I wanted to try a different setup than the stereotypical imprisoned mermaid/merman needing rescue or nobody knows merfolk exist schtick. Cliches are good but sometimes a fresh twist can go a long way.

I could've ended this part with a cliffhanger by reader blanking out in sea but that will be cruel. I'll be exploring more on how Mers work in any universe I use merfolk.

A scientist with an affinity for poisons and body augmentation, she has no regard for human life and enjoys experimenting on herself. She served as Norman Osborn’s Scarlet Witch in his second version of the Dark Avengers.

Batman: Nocturna

Natalia Knight, a morally complicated jewel thief who fell in love with Batman, and later became the foster mother of Jason Todd. Her relationship to Bruce and Jason was erased thanks to Crisis on Infinite Earths. Unfortunately, later characters using the Nocturna name have been written as sexual predators, though they are NOT Natalia Knight.

Captain America: Superia/Broad-Stripe

Diedre Wentworth is a noted misandrist who has tried to take over America using an organization of all female supervillains called the Femizons. She at one point altered time by inserting herself into the early days of the Avengers under the name “Broad-Stripe.”

Magical Girl Raising Project: Melville

A nomad Magical Girl with a rather bizarre speech pattern. She has the power to change her color, letting her blend into the background. Melville wields a harpoon and a bow as her weapon.

and i really dont think its as shallow as most shippers liken it to be? i think its first and foremost built on a solid ground of friendship and trust. like these are two people who love each other and would do absolutely anything for each other (have done absolutely everything for each other) even if there's not anything romantic between them.

i also go insane in my rewatches noticing every lingering glance or unnecessarily symbolic shots (the entire conversation the first time she goes to his office?? hotch leaving his wife and going to emily's apartment?? that pan-out to emily's desk as hotch is signing his divorce papers?? what does it mean what does it all mean) and im 10000% convinced that they did meet when he was working for ambassador prentiss, otherwise why would he say 'very good to see you again'? whether or not anything happened depends on how im feeling that day

he would quickly scan the menu, eyeing the pictures of cute food along with whatever dish sounds appetizing enough

his concentration was cut off, however, when he heard a familiar voice

even tho you purposefully raise your voice up a notch this man would still know that it's you

he'd blush furiously as soon as his eyes meet yours and seeing you in a cute maid outfit really did not help his case

you'd freeze as soon as you processed the identities of the customers in front of you mostly at suga

noya would eye the two of you knowingly, a somewhat proud smirk on his face

you would try to get back into character very awkwardly if i might add and suga would just stare at you in disbelief

unlike sugawara, kageyama is a very awkward dude

you were just about to walk back to the counter when you suddenly felt a hand stop you by your wrist. you turned around towards a sheepish looking kenma. his eyes landing on every where but you.

"i have that game you're saving up. if you want, we can play it together. it's a multiplayer game right? i haven't started on it because kuroo sucks at shooting games." kenma's voice has always been soft and very quiet. some would've found it hard to understand what he just said but to you, you could hear him as clear as day.

"sure, we can play it this friday if you want?"

Wine : german is know for wine as feel bernkastel kues or the whole region is known for its wine german qine counts as one of the best wines in the world i know people who own winerys (i come from that region but moved)

German beer has a long tradition the oldest brewery is over 1040 years old, its a monastery like most of the others as well

Roman influences: Trier germanies oldest city was a roman city and the furthest they were able to get into the european continent (the nordic and germanic tribes fought the hard lmao) so there are a lot of zisterenen, roman constructs all over german like old water ways and such are just standing around (googel römer kanal) or like in Trier the Porta Nigra "black gate" its one of the orginal roman city gates thats still standing but left black from the ashes of the city burning down

Buildings: The city buldings are "Fachwerk Häuser" houses were hay was stacked and loam pasted over it and wood blocks inserted as a means to seperate the sections and stabel them during the drying processe, those are very traditional and u see them everywhere because (like any medival town) german city grew around the city center /market

But like dont start me on the city walls and the knightheadquater because if we base the time frame on the gothic church its around 12 century and then the bulging city walls are fine BUT the knights headdquatet tower roof isnt and thats been pissing me off lmao the bulding onnits own is fine its just the piecing roof thingy the middle thing is fine but the outer once are out of character but well that's one thing

Clothing: jo the clothes are ??? What the majority of woman in mond are wearing are "Dirndl" traditional *Bavarian* fest clothing that is worn on the Oktober Fest, Dirndl are really expansive and mostly hand made (the good onse are) so if you have a Dirndl with full accessories you are very easily in a 3 digit number so everyone wearing one is like off its like saying they korean and having them wear a ceremonial hanbok on an everyday occasion

Knights: ooooof germany had a "lehns herren system" indentured servitude in medieval times basically the farmes wear living on the nobels land and severed them, sharing their religion and stuff and if they needed a knights theyd just take them people

Germany's older knight order are the Johanniter which were formed during rhe crusade all of the other ones can be traced back to this time too

The lion of the south: well the dandelion is called Löwenzahn (Lions tooth) in german so like yeah thats a thing they integrated so calling jean the her descendant and dandelion knight and leveling her up with them is kinda a nice symbolic touch as well
