This is embarrassing, because the source material are just so unhinged, but I’m obsessed with them (and every thing SFTH did, really) to the point that I’ll simply fail as an artist if I don’t draw fanart of them, so I did. Sam and Luke killed it with playing Bubbamiah but I think the real MVP of ITMC is AJ. Within 3 minutes of the play he establishes that Obama died in a war on a horse with a sword fighting cubes, single-handedly laying the groundwork for a love story of two men participating in a war while maintaining absurdity for comedic potential. He adlibs the eternal sfth classic 'Baby Back by Future', and proceeds to craft another literary masterpiece on the spot in the same scene. "He's a goddamn American": hilarious line, beautifully paired with Jeremiah's revival. Every scene with the President is absolute gold and he is the biggest reason this play is one of my all time favs.

I don’t see enough discussion of the way Sam turns around when AJ says, “I’ll leave you with a poem” in Inside the Mysterious Cube

Like, that is the most “you have dug yourself a hole and I am going to greatly enjoy watching you scrabble around in there” look I’ve ever seen in my life

The Cube stabbing Jeremiah in his side vs. Bubba resting his hand in that very same spot in the beginning of the play. 

"Look. The Sun's rising."

Ok but can we talk about THIS scene!!

Jeremiah seems guarded and careful when “his husband” is mentioned.

He stays level and repeats the question, but his tone is low and careful. Like he’s anticipating a homophobic reaction.

But as soon as Bubba reveals himself he visibly relaxes, his tone rising and he lets himself be a bit more vulnerable.

I adore this scene so much. I just think that the subtlety of it is SO GOOD. And I know it’s improvised BUT-

Ok. Throughout cube, there isn’t any explicit homophobia. At all. And that’s AMAZING to see, but it’s also good to see that something that so many people struggle with hasn’t just been completely erased and doesn’t just not impact the characters at all. I like that there’s still that real-ness to it all, but the story doesn’t at all revolve around the gay characters being discriminated against.

And whether any of this was intentional or not- I think that it really captured that anxiety of “what if someone says something” SO well. I also think it works especially well considering that it’s a military environment, where there is typically a lot of homophobia, so it hints to Jeremiah possibly facing homophobic remarks in the past. Which like. My poor baby.
