NOBODY needs to be defending these people. Major publishers, studios, streaming services, Tesla, Apple, Adobe, Amazon, social media companies- there isnt a single altruistic bone caught in their teeth. Profit from the output of exploited and captive labor IS their product now. When their contacts look like the one in question, the company is clearly stating that shareholders are the customers, not us!
Why else would it be anything but a stupid idea for Amazon to just nuke the majority of Comixology's self-published titles when they consolidated their services? If our experience was really foremost in their minds, why would they repeatedly purge, censor, demonitize, bury, and delete popular accounts with robust followings if not to allay the moral brainworms of shareholders and investors?
Forfeiting rights to our IP is not a "shitty deal," it's surrendering any potential ability to make money off of your own creative work. It's selling your property to a board of accountants to pitch into a portfolio. It's theirs to trot out as long as it's profitable and bury the instant its projected profit dips too close to the cost of maintenance. Hell, we've seen services drop popular series just because their projected profits started to flatten out! Mothballing it also has the added bonus of removing it from the market to further minimize potential competition. Like how there just weren't spider man movies for ages because the owner of the property didn't think it was worth developing but worth too much to sell.
They will make more money from suing you for trying to reclaim IP they mothballed than you did selling it to them in the first place. I guaranteee their budget for lawsuits is a lot deeper than the one they pay their "original" artists from.
By virtue of being a big, profitable, corporation, "their" IP is going to have an astronomically higher value in a court of law than any individual creator. The financial "damage" will be higher for infringing on their copyrights than any amount you can claim on your own. When it becomes theirs, their connections, their infrastructure, their reputation makes it an asset with much more value than you or I can possibly claim. So if you try to steal a bite back from them it's a bite of a *potentially* multimillion-dollar series. In their eyes, they bought the totality of your work, which you agreed was worth the price they gave you. It's value becomes more dependent on who owns it than whether it's even good.
You may not have the same potential to become flash-in-the-pan, short-term succesful without their resources, but you will still own your rights to distribute, alter, preserve, promote, and negotiate your share if you still own your work. That is worth everything as a creator who is passionate about what you've made and committed to protecting it.
The most effective power we can exercise as artists is our ability to say, "no" when someone else wants to pay us a disadvantageous fraction of our worth. You may lose potentially lucrative opportunities but "opportunities" presented by companies like Facebook or Twitter, whose real product is a platform for ads and data collection, with content as bait, are not opportunities to thrive on as independent artists. This specifically is an opportunity for the company to acquire property.
The myth that the publisher's strength is something for us to exploit, without them getting the lion's share is a trap that they feed from at will.
People like the poster up top are opportunists who see the process as a pipeline towards trading low-investment content for financial treats and maybe a share of ad revive. They're stalking horses for companies to exploit more talented but less experienced artists who are facing a daunting and overwhelming market where their work becomes harder and harder to show, let alone sell. A quick deal may feel like a win but it's selling the cow to save money on bottling the milk. Artists like this serve the publisher by making it seem like signing away your rights are just a necessary part of the game. However it's a game they are playing with exceedingly cheap stakes that weren't going to succeed on their own merit. So what if Mr. Business Perspective loses rights to his sexy Mario Bros. parody to a huge company? The point was always to unload it because it's a product, a bartering chip, a trinket. He's a Business Man, so he sees tactics that maximize profits to the business as maximizing their ability to buy whatever shiny tripe he cranks out. The business is his customer, not the reader. The business is his ally, not the creative community. Fuck him and fuck anyone who tells you the exposure is worth a damn if you don't retain rights to your work.

I’m under a lot of financial stress rn so I’ve been attempting to sell off a lot of my figures (a ridiculous amount tbh) for about three or four years now and it’s been extremely slow going & I’m not making enough to make a dent in the debt Im dealing with. I have ads up on eBay & I’m starting to cross post on Mercari but that’s it. I don’t really know how to sell on MFC so I’ve left that alone. I’m not sure if I’m underpricing or overpricing but most of the stuff I have listed is way less than I paid for. I’m sure it depends on location/what’s being sold but I was just wondering if you happened to have any tips as the financial stress is impacting my health. Thanks again.
oh i'm so sorry to hear that! it can be difficult for sure, especially if the market/fanbase for the figures you're selling isn't as alive as it once was (or just never was alive to begin with). i also feel like selling is difficult in general nowadays, people bid very low and just aren't even willing to spend half the price that something is worth. not really anyone's fault, a lot of people are struggling, but it's very frustrating as a seller.
in my experience websites with an instant buy option (so no need to message back and forth, like ebay, vinted, etc.) cost way less time than websites without an instant buy option (way more messaging back and forth, getting ghosted, etc. like facebook market place or any other (local) marketplace). i used to use instagram, fb marketplace and a local marketplace app to stell items but i just do not have the time and energy for that shit anymore. they did work for sure, it just takes so much time and ofcourse i'm unsure whether you have that. i personally only use vinted rn but that's not available everywhere sadly. i do use mfc sometimes too, but i've never used their ad system. i just go to the page of the figure and comment "selling her in europe, good as new with box!" or something and sometimes people will reply or dm you if they're looking for the figure.

On the topic of: It really is that damn phone :/
I have been a citizen of the World Wide Web for quite some time now, and it's safe to say that unrestricted internet access starting from a young age definitely hasn't done me good. Social media use and access to such a wide variety of information, in general, have negatively impacted me and many others. This impact only becomes more apparent as time goes on. We are not supposed to be readily available 24/7, constantly connected to everyone's thoughts, ideas, and opinions. Over time, we have built up a need for instant gratification, and things in our everyday lives have become less enjoyable. We are no longer present with our friends and family in the same ways we used to be. There is now more than ever an expectation that people must drop everything and be readily available for you at all times. It has become a “toxic trait” to be slow to reply to a text message or a phone call. Instead of hearing about the next biggest fad diet or must-try fashion trend in magazines or your social circle, you are constantly being fed a rapidly changing social expectation for beauty and the standard of living. Children as young as 13, but many times even younger, are subjected to content pushing what their bodies should look like and unrealistic expectations of the human experience. Influencers are constantly sharing their unrealistic morning routines, including a 20-step skincare routine, a 2-hour workout, handfuls of supplements, perfectly curated home decor, and a new “must-have” product linked to their Amazon storefront in every step. This perfectly prescribed life is unrealistic and is not obtainable for many people. The level of consumption portrayed in these days in life videos is something many Americans can not afford. Constant online shopping has become so normalized due to these influencers and targeted ads that many people are now in debt. An unexpected consequence of coming out of a consumerism culture is the buy now pay later app and the large debt people accrue after using these services for nearly every purchase. These apps are predatory and try to come across as a safer alternative to credit cards by being a no-interest option. Still, many people have found themselves stuck in debt due to the ease of use and accessibility on nearly every platform where online purchases can be made. All these bad things bring me to the question of what we can do about this. How can we regain control of our lives and change how we consume content? I have always been a little bit ashamed of my screen time. I would spend hours mindlessly scrolling through social media, adding things to my Amazon cart, and fantasizing about a life I could have but didn't. The day would turn to night, and I would have accomplished nothing more than the illusion of productivity. I would think of all the ways I would get my life together this time, ending up with just another day of mindless consumption. Recently, I have started turning more and more to long-form content. I would watch commentary videos on YouTube about current social and political topics, funny trends, and podcasts about feelings and other things (shout out to Sadboyz). A recurring topic I saw across the content I watched on YouTube was the discourse about how social media is terrible. This may not seem like a novel idea, but it presented the information in a way that made sense and helped me realize how much time I wasted each day. With creators like Eddy Burback ditching their phones to see what life is like without the constant noise, I became inspired to do the same (almost). I deleted most social media apps, such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Mostly, the apps brought me more frustration than enjoyment. Now, this step didn't entirely sever my tie with my phone, which sometimes feels like a safety blanket, but it did stop the constant gravitational pull of reels, polarizing comment sections, and this season's list of 50 things you must buy….

About: The packaging for the Hey Kitty is a pretty shameless ripoff of the packaging of the officially licensed 2020 Hello Kitty Tamagotchi.

Above is a direct comparison between the two (h/t to @bootlegpals for the Hey Kitty box; they have a whole post on this knockoff here). The packaging is almost the same, except for the replaced header/logo section, generic Kitty wearing a green bow, and green bow replacing the red bow in the upper right hand corner.


The case of the Hey Kitty is also clearly ripped from the Hello Kitty tama. The generic green-bow kitty replaces Hello Kitty at the top, the scale and positioning of the pixel art images are off compared to the real version. Some pixel art images have been replaced. For example, a Space Invader sprite replaces a bumblebee. The product image and the video from their Amazon (posted below) both show that the gameplay is just the Bunny ROM. According to an Amazon review from Saudi Arabia, the screen is super low-quality and forms bubbles.

RE: Your "fandom wasn't always like this" post Fandoms ending when their source did used to be a VERY BAD SIGN that the series had utterly belly flopped. It really didn't start being standard until.... at least after dashcon, but probably closer to the end of the second phase of the MCU. I think Avengers Endgame was the real final death knell of "extended fandom", but even before that, the MCU dragging us along by the hair on the back of our necks seemed to be what killed having a long-term fandom.
You aren't wrong with assuming that specific fandoms were some of the major downfalls of what we had going for us, but the answer is definitely more nuanced than that unfortuntely.
I've had a lot of time to sit and think about the subject of the post I made, and I genuinely think that the true answer to the downfall of Fandom as a whole, is social media.
I hate to sound like That Old Person at a ripe age of 31, but that is my honest answer.
I myself did not get a phone until I was 18 years old and was able to buy one for myself, a little sidekick that let me text my friends when I wanted to hang out, but that wasou f about it. I didn't even get a home computer in my house until I was about 13 years old because we were fairly poor and didn't really need it for anything other than emails and bills.
The first thing I discovered on the computer was Neopets and Gaiaonline, two 'gaming' websites (I'm not assuming your age, but I'm going to talk as if you don't know about anything I'm speaking of just in case other people read this who do not know about it.) that focused heavily on dressing up your avatars, mini flash games and forum role play. The hottest social media at the time was Myspace and it wasn't until I got into Highschool that I even ended up making one.
There were no real algorithms that fed you 'content' on a front page outside of the things the people you followed posted, no way to get fed news ads unless it was in the sidebar where ads were usually placed, and there was no instant updates to every person's lives both small or famous unless you went looking for those updates yourself on google.
Now we have social media that is both forcefully placed in front of you in the form of genuine 'content' in both long and short form on absolutely every platform you can imagine. This isn't even going with the discussion that talks about ads on the TV and how for decades, America has been putting more and more emphases on pharmacy ads on TV and extending commercials to the point where people would rather pay 10-40 a month on streaming services to access movies and TV that might not exist at the whim of the streaming services, than watch cable tv with ads lol
Anyway, when Fandom first began its slow descent into madness, it was about the time that the new style of social media began to get big (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, Tiktok, etc) all places that were designed and created to make you want to See More.
I'm not one of those people who are like "We have no more focus because of social media arg!" but there is a grain of truth to the fact that, if you are fed bite sized pieces of bee information at a faster rate, it's harder to get yourself to slow down and actually delve into a topic further without incentive.
We have catchy news headlines that people read and never take the time to look into the matter further, we have facebook posts where people make crazy claims and no one verifies to check if it's true because that takes time and effort and understanding of how to perform basic search tasks and reading comprehension to ask the right questions, we have instagram breaking the concept of art and life experiences into bite sized, perfect square windows of moments to make your instagram feed look pretty enough to have thousands of followers, we have Twitter that has always been somewhat of a fast websites, but is easy to spread misinformation around on at light speed, Snapchat makes photos disappear, never allowing anything you do to be permanent unless someone manages to save it, Vine and TikTok made attention sinks were it's so easy to just get lost for hours of time into maybe not useless, but an exhaustive stream of information that encourages doing the same finger action for hours on end.
Marvel/MCU/Disney whatever we want to call it, including all the other major production companies, are just one symptom of a bigger problem. They've ridden the waves of instant gratification and people's inability to think outside the boxes for years, but unfortunately our primary source of entertainment in a world that wants to kill us all the time and keeps us inside the house more often, just happens to finally align with the companies and programs that are designed to squeeze more and more out of us until we die.
Unfortunately, Capitalism is killing Fandom as a whole, we are just seeing it more because our primary sources of communication and our major routes of entertainment for ourselves are finally working together to bleed us dry.
