KAYLEIGH’S QUESTION TO ME: WHERE DOES YOUR BODY BELONG?

I decided to explore this question in the format of a one-to-one performance. In a previous discussion with Kayleigh, we decided that our final piece needed to be presented as either a one-to-one or intimate (i.e. one-to-few / two-to-two) performance, in order for every audience member to benefit from the work. We felt that a performance which consisted of a large audience would result in a representation of a collated or generalised human body. With our initial, broad intention for this project being to create an opportunity for our audience to explore the outer and inner layers of their individual bodies, we very much want to avoid the outcome of representing a generalised human body. Every body and identity is intricately and personally unique – we want to ensure that this recognition is placed at the forefront of our work through the format of one-to-one or intimate performance. …

In Kristevan theory, the corpse is the most abject expulsion because “It is no longer I who expel, ‘I’ is expelled. The border has become an object. How can I be without border?” (Kristeva, 1982: 2). However, in Dr Bessel van der Kolk’s book, ‘The Body Keeps the Score’, he explains how trauma can cause sensory instability: “patients had learned to shut down the brain areas that transmit the visceral feelings and emotions that accompany and define terror”. (Kolk, 2015: 92). In this case, rather than being “the most abject expulsion”, expelling the self from the body becomes an anaesthesia to abject sensations. As mentioned in a previous post, for the next stage of this project, Kayleigh and I are to perform self ‘dissections’. I therefore created a paper representation of Kayleigh’s body, in order for Kayleigh to expel herself from her body and effectively be anesthetised during this ‘dissection’…

Political election posters and slogans, these are portraits of different faces of the Bulgarian Politics. What else is left, for one lied and made fun of from the politicians society, but the society also make fun of the politicians, so it can show that nothing is left unnoticed. Performance and digital interactive installation/ projection of political election posters. On the posters with Photoshop are applied real time visual manipulations on the faces of the politicians and this is projected on one of the walls of the Cultural Centre Starinna Banya. Everyone is invited to choose their favorite politician poster and manipulate it. Prior to visiting Lucerne I arranged to do a solo performance at the Loge Theater which is an intimate space in the heart of Lucerne. I performed a selection of poetry from City Alive with Dreams, Dream Minds and Neighborhood Magic. The audience was invited to participate in the project and two women signed up at this event.

Cities of a Floating World by Daniela Ehemann and Carron Little Institut fur Alies Mogliche (Institute of Infinite Ideas), Berlin and 6018North, Chicago May 4, 2013

Our first collaborative performance was an international skype conversation where we wanted to create a roundtable conversation about architectural development in Chicago and Berlin. The cities have had an interesting partnership historically over the years with it’s connections to the Bauhaus and Modernist architecture. Daniela was working on a residency researching Bauhaus in Chicago. We wanted to facilitate a conversation about urbanization, gentrification and the issues around urban renewal.

There were 10 to 20 participants in both cities. Chicago was a breakfast performance and in Berlin, it was an early evening performance. We had a diverse group of citizens from both countries in the collective real and virtual space. Together, Ehemann and Little scripted an interactive performance that facilitated discussion and an exchange of perspectives from both cities.

An architect, in Berlin, spoke about the increasing problem they have with Chinese tourists and how the city is in conversation about how they can keep this tourism to one district. We found this highly problematic as this for us referred back to issues of ghettoization. This topic created a heated conversation between the two cities at a time when Germany is trying to have a conversation about the Second World War and where we are living in a highly segregated community.

The raw footage from this performance sparked a conversation between Daniela and myself and inspired the next performance entitled a Hitchhike to Utopia. I think it’s important to say that in the intimacy of this collaboration we are willing to talk and address the difficult ideas that are part of our nation’s traumatic pasts and this is what is vital about our collaborative practice and spurs us to continue.
