Overlooked No More: Beulah Henry, Inventor With an Endless Imagination
This article is part of Overlooked, a series of obituaries about remarkable people whose deaths, beginning in 1851, went unreported in The Times. From the time Beulah Henry was a child in the late 19th century, she dreamed of ways to make life easier. That impulse would eventually drive her to secure dozens of patents and would earn her a nickname: Lady Edison. When she died in the early 1970s,…

Okay this is getting fucking ridiculous, and I need to do some goddamn damage control.
I get unreasonably crotchety during the summer, and get the temptation to post salt like you wouldn't believe. Containment measures are required.
I'm inventing the fucking tumblr salt shaker so I can just shove all that shit in the replies to this post and not harass my followers and mutuals with negativity.

Sarah Boone (née Sarah Marshall; 1832 – 1904) was an African-American inventor. On April 26, 1892, she obtained United States patent number 473,563 for her improvements to the ironing board. Boone's ironing board was designed to improve the quality of ironing the sleeves and bodies of women's garments. The ironing board was very narrow, curved, and made of wood. The shape and structure allowed it to fit a sleeve and it was reversible, so one could iron both sides of the sleeve.

Ice Cream
Tumblr media
Before Nancy Johnson’s invention, ice cream was made by hand, requiring manual beating of the mixture and using ice and salt to lower the temperature.
In 1843, Nancy Johnson (1794–1890) revolutionized the process by designing a device featuring a tin cylinder with a crank and internal blades that stirred the cream while it cooled.
Her machine allowed the ice cream to freeze faster and with a smoother texture, improving the quality of the treat.
Johnson patented her invention in 1843 under the number US3254A, but due to a lack of resources to mass-produce the machine, she sold the patent to William Young.
Young played a significant role in popularizing the machine, and Johnson’s design laid the foundation for ice cream machines that would be used for many years to come.
Her invention paved the way for the mass production of ice cream, transforming it from a luxury reserved for the elite into a beloved dessert enjoyed by people everywhere.
While her name may not be as widely known today, Nancy Johnson's contribution to the culinary world remains a lasting one, with her hand-cranked machine still serving as a nostalgic method for making homemade ice cream.

Stamford and Watson go for a ride on a tandem bicycle and talk about Holmes
(Tandems were first available from 1889, with patents for similar ideas from a few years earlier. Assuming Holmes and Watson met in 1881 in this series, like they are supposed to have in the books, then how is there a tandem already?)

Patent Drawing Sheet Size Requirements: Navigating Global Patent Office Standards
Tumblr media
Patent drawings are the visual backbone of any patent application, and understanding the precise sheet size requirements can mean the difference between a smooth application process and frustrating rejections. Different patent offices worldwide have specific guidelines that inventors and patent professionals must carefully follow to ensure compliance.

View Our Work Samples
Global Patent Office Sheet Size Standards
United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
Acceptable Sizes:
US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches)
A4 (210 × 297 mm)
Preferred Format: US Letter for domestic applications
Margin Requirements:
Top: 2.5 cm
Left: 2.5 cm
Right: 1.5 cm
Bottom: 1 cm
World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
Mandatory Size: A4 (210 × 297 mm)
Strict Adherence: No alternative sizes accepted for international (PCT) applications
Consistent Global Standard: Most international patent offices follow WIPO guidelines
Key Considerations for Sheet Size Selection
Factors Influencing Sheet Size Choice
Patent filing jurisdiction
Type of patent application (utility, design, plant)
Complexity of technical illustrations
Reproduction and scanning requirements
Specific Requirements by Patent Type
Utility Patents: Multiple views may require careful layout planning
Design Patents: Consistent scaling across all standard views
Plant Patents: Sometimes allow color drawings or photographs
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Using non-standard paper sizes
Incorrect margin measurements
Inconsistent scaling across drawings
Inadequate white space around illustrations
Best Practices for Sheet Size Compliance
Always confirm current requirements with specific patent office
Use professional drafting software with built-in templates
Maintain consistent drawing quality across all sheets
Ensure clear, reproducible line work within specified margins
International Filing Considerations
For PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) applications, A4 is the universal standard
Some countries may have slight variations in margin requirements
Digital submissions increasingly supporting standardized formats
Tools and Resources
Recommended Drafting Software:
AutoCAD
Adobe Illustrator
SolidWorks
Visio
Online resources from USPTO and WIPO for current guidelines
Conclusion: Precision Matters
Navigating the intricate world of patent drawing requirements can seem daunting, but meticulous attention to detail – especially sheet size and formatting – is crucial. By understanding and implementing these guidelines, inventors can significantly improve their chances of a successful patent application.
Remember, a well-prepared patent drawing is not just a technical requirement; it's a powerful tool for clearly communicating your innovative ideas to patent examiners and protecting your intellectual property.
