cdrama of the year was hands down The Double. yesssss let's see some Revenge let's see some Women's Wrongs!! let's see a ship that is just Colluding and In Cahoots so hard they pretty much had to get married about it

between the evil princess twirling in every scene and that one shot of the bloodied male lead putting a necklace in his mouth, it managed to raise the bar for both villains and gratuitous fanservice

disclaimer: I haven't seen In Blossom yet. my runner up is Love Game In Eastern Fantasy for being brave enough to ask the question "what if Inuyasha was fucking ridiculous. no, even more than it is already"

an additional TV anecdote of 2024 is that my dad is trying to get me hooked on his Outlander blorbos for like the 9th year in a row, and while I'm too fandompilled to ever stan diana gabaldon, I do see the appeal. (it's the h/c show. just constant whump and h/c. the audacity of this woman to be anti-fanfiction while writing the most fanfictiony thing ever written. and my 60-year-old clown father is like 'no listen it's really serious historical fiction about War' while these characters are ripping literal bodice on the screen behind him)

6) Favorite book you read this year?

the other night I was at a friend's book swap party (banger event, incidentally) and had to explain that I had chosen to bring a good but non-favorite book because my actual favorite of this year was dense and depressing 700-page sequel Menewood (I read it in january and have been chasing that low ever since)

Something you’ve always been good at: Sports. Just in general; I’m very athletic and it’s not difficult for me to quickly learn and be good at any random physical activity. This is to the annoyance of lots of people who hate when someone picks up A Thing they’ve been doing for a while, and that person is a natural at it so then they develop a complex. (Sorry to be a natural jock and yes it will happen again.) The first time I went skiing I was whooping everyone’s ass in races by the end of the day. My ex was not amused. Yes, you do want me on your team 10/10 times.

Something you’re working hard to get better at: Writing! Always always always writing. I started trying to unlearn ~bad habits~ a couple years ago and my stuff has visibly improved loaaads (on a technical level) in the past few years.

Favorite item of clothing: Looney tunes sweater. If I were a cartoon that would be my Signature.

Favorite fizzy drink/pop/soda (if you like them): I’m counting energy drinks in this and saying red bull, but specifically the dark green dragon fruit flavor.

Your favorite song right now: I just wrote a short bones and all x jalice AU inspired by ‘Famous Last Words (An Ode to Eaters)’ by Ethel Cain which is inspired by the movie which is inspired by the book. WIP Whenever

Once again I’ve been tagged by the most amazing @emimayooo to share part of my WIP. Thank you for the support! And, once again, rather than do the simple thing and copy/paste part of my text, I’d rather lay out my goals for this fic. (It’s an Obi-Wan POV and I haven’t quite gotten his voice right, so I need more time editing before I’ll show any of my prose). 

Oh, and if I understand this right, I’m supposed to tag other people to join in, so @low-fantasy, @iocococo, @volturialice let’s see what you’re working on!

This fic is set in the Stargate Atlantis universe ~20 years after the end of the show. I’ve taken characters from Star Wars and crossed them over. There is no force, no lightsabers, they’re simply the characters plucked out of SW and set into SGA. (And Anakin is a female, because that’s my gimmick.) 

It’s been interesting brainstorming how Anakin’s “child of the force” aspect crosses over into the SGA universe. Obviously Anakin’s got to have the most Ancient genes to ever ancient that surpasses even John Sheppard’s connection to Lantean technology. The whole goal of writing this is to explore what that means and how it’s possible for Anakin to be *like that.*

Concrete goals: the first chapter is going to be <6k. Here’s how I’ve titled my outline sections: opening framework - math, control, restrained. Meet cute - loss of control. Main conflict - humorous, sickening. Closing framework - existential despair, math. (I was so excited when I found a common theme to both open and close this story, yay, here I am, practicing a craft skill lmao.) Hopefully I can cram everything I need to in this so that my workshop piece will be somewhat coherent.

The total fic length should be less than 20k, with either 2 or 3 chapters, and will end with the worst OT3 pairing that has ever existed. It should not exist. It should not make me giggle manically. It’s so bad.

I’m so excited.

Maybe The Game of Throne books. Mainly because they're so damn long. I am a voracious re-reader and re-watcher so this one was hard!

mahonia ⇢ what place, thing, activity inspires you most and how do you express yourself when it does?

Music inspires me to write. Nature inspires me to slow down and look inwards. My home inspires me to cocoon and forget about the world and I have to actively fight against it so I don't become a hermit. Exercise inspires me to perspire. (What's this high people are talking about? I've never experienced it...) My kid inspires me to see things from a new angle.

1. What made you start writing?

When I was very little I wanted to be an actor. and then this eventually turned into a desire to make horror movies. In the third grade I wrote a script (3 pages long) for a horror movie and then forced all my friends to act in it for my 10th birthday party. The plot was a movie within a movie where the star was murdered on screen because someone had switched out the prop knife (turned out it was the lighting guy, furious at being demoted, he was supposed to be the star but the actress was so amazing in the audition they rewrote the part to be for a woman, I did not understand hollywood on a multitude of levels haha) in any case this sticks out as the first time I really set out to write something. 

Then in fourth grade my teacher pointed out to my mom and I that I was very good at writing and then I got featured a lot in this newspaper section where they would have kids from the county respond to prompts and I eventually got an award for that. This is around the time I started writing for fun. In the 5th grade I started work on a “novel” in which my classmates and myself were trapped in an insane asylum after a fieldtrip went wrong. Then I wrote another “novel” about some kids who were driving back from the basketball state championship when their bus gets wrecked and their coach is possessed by a demon. and from there I just kept going! I mostly focused on screenwriting but after I graduated from film school I wrote my first actual novel, called the Chrono Club about a rogue time traveler named Hero Mcfitzowitz who was dating Billy the Kid and running from the time council due to her repeated inability to stop fraternizing with important historical figures. 

I started writing because I wanted to make movies and I kept writing because I found that really I just loved telling stories. 

4. What is your favortie genre?

My first love was horror. and I still return to that idea often. But in general I like magical realism. Or sci-fi. Basically I like to tell stories in the real world except that there is magic and so anything can happen. Sometimes I try to write more realistic things and it feels so constraining. for a long time I was focused on writing comic books and the thing I love most about the DC and Marvel universes were that fantasy and sci-fi elements all managed to co-exist. Like doctor Strange and Star Lord could interact even though they were from completely different genres. I really dig that. I’m also pretty partial to westerns. I’m an equal oppurtunity genre fan. whichever genre allows me the most freedom. 

25. Who is your favorite character you’ve written about? 

I would say Vince. Especially in Love Potion No. 9. I really connected with him and put a lot of myself into him. I did for Howard as well. howard tends to get my negative traits. I tend to write stuff for Vince when I’m trying to figure stuff out about how people present to the world. I put a lot into Vince about how optimism can be painful. and how it can be hard when you’ve constructed a persona of bright and shininess when you were younger and then start to feel trapped by it. and matters of identity and self expression have long been a recurring theme in my stuff (that I didn’t pick up on until pretty recently) and Vince is the perfect character to explore than through.

3 - What were your top five books of the year?

I feel like 80% of what I read this year were flops, but now that I look at this list, I read so many books that 20% non-flops isn't too bad, actually. My favorites this year were mostly "finally got around to reading" books that are only new to me! And of course we had some gems from Bella's Book Club, both regular and from the summer reading challenge (shoutout to Braiding Sweetgrass, the Emily books, and The Hollow Kingdom!)

the His Dark Materials trilogy - Yeah yeah, everyone's been telling me to read this since I was 10 to the point where I was like "there's no way this could possibly live up to the hype" but oops yes it does

The Haunting of Hill House - shirley is Mother

Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower - if shirley is Mother, tamsyn is God

System Collapse/my more diplomatic answer: the Ancillary Justice series - AJ isn't as good as Murderbot but that's an insanely high bar so it's still pretty good

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall - Wasn't expecting to like this nearly as much as I did, but found I was just stoked to keep reading every time I picked it up

10 - What was your favorite new release of the year?

At the beginning of the year I said it was gonna be System Collapse and I was 100% correct, it was System Collapse
