Literally anyone who hates book piracy should really take a moment to sit down in their room, stare at their bookshelf, and count how many books they've ever bought second-hand, or how many books they read each year from the library.

If you're against people reading books for free, you need to sit down and consider all of the ways you, personally, have read a book that didn't 'Explicitly support the author by buying a brand new individual copy from a authorized platform that pays royalties"

Like, literally.

Sit down and think about it.

What, functionally, is the difference between a book that you downloaded, and a book you bought or acquired Used?

How about a used book you got from your friend, or family?

A yardsale?

How about the Free bin outside a book shop or a library?

How about from A Little Free Library?

How about the books you borrow from the library and return so another hundred individuals can read that same book?

If a publisher gives hundreds of thousands of copies of their ebooks for free in one year, how can you then turn around and disparage those who got *their* free copies from another source a year later when that promotion ended?

If you legitimately think that book piracy robs authors, then by all rights you should also think that libraries and used bookstores should be illegal. You can't have it both ways. Either you can acknowledge that poor people who can't afford to buy brand new books exist, and that they still deserve to be able to read and have access to books, or you think that anybody who doesn't go out of their way to buy brand new copies of every single release directly from a publisher are somehow stealing from authors???

Almost every book I've ever owned has been a used copy from yard sales, flea markets, eBay, better World books, etc.

Now that I am an adult with disposable income, if I have a favored author that I discovered from those $1 used paperbacks, guess what! I will usually preorder their newest book if I can afford to do so-- but that is not a luxury everyone has, especially in 2025 and beyond!

And guess what? Even if I am going out of my way to preorder a new physical book from my favorite author for $20-$30 .... I still need a DRM free ebook to actually read it so I can increase the text size and contrast to avoid getting a massive headache from the small font sizes, or risk that prescious physical copy getting ruined if I want to be able to read anywhere away from home , or having to lug around an 800+ page hardcover with me if I want to read literally anywhere other than my home, which I still have to squint down at the page to do so.

"Just buy the Kindle edition!" -- what, so Amazon can literally change what version of the book I have at any time, or revoke the licence because 'buying' a kindle book isn't actually owning it?? So I can't read the books I 'own' on an older device that doesn't support the official Kindle app, like the 14 year old Ipad I spent almost 6 hours to get it back into a usable state by rolling back the "latest ios update" that Apple put out to slow it to a snails pace and make it a buggy peice of shit??

There's a reason my favorite publishers are the ones who sell phyiscal copies and DRM free ebooks in bundles !

Surprisingly, pirates avidly buy books,” the survey shares. 14.4% of respondents admitted to engaging in book piracy. They are younger than the average survey population and more of them are men and people of color, but the most unifying trait they have is that book pirates are avid readers — and they buy more books than the average respondent: “Compared to the general survey population, a higher percentage of book pirates during COVID are buying more ebooks (38.7%), audiobooks (27.1%) and print books (33.7%).” They’re also much more likely than general survey respondents to buy books in multiple formats: 41.5% do! During the pandemic, book pirates also increased their purchasing of newspaper and magazine subscriptions. They also are more likely to be library power users. 77.2% own a library card, and they borrow more than the average survey population, including ebooks (30.1%), audiobooks (31.6%), and print books (28.5%). Book pirates often use the library for discovering books that they go on to purchase: “58.4% of pirates bought a book at the bookstore that they first discovered at a library. 54.3% of pirates bought a book online that they first found in a library (compared to 35.9% of the general survey population).” Many turn to pirating books when they aren’t available at the library, especially Gen Z respondents. Book pirates are almost twice as likely to read or download free books for marketing promotions, and they’re also more likely to post a book review on social media (59.9%) and more than twice as likely to read fan fiction (27.4% do, as compared to 12.2% of the general survey population). This suggests that book pirates are some of the most passionate readers online, actively promoting titles and fandoms. This isn’t the first survey to suggest that piracy isn’t a simple case of lost sales. In fact, a €360,000 ($430,000) study by the European Union in 2013 found that outside of new blockbuster movie releases, there was “no robust statistical evidence of displacement of sales by online piracy,” including across books, video games, and movies. In fact, they found it might even help video game sales.

Gee, it's almost as though every single study ever done on media piracy proves over and over again that people who care enough about a piece of media to pirate it are also the ones who spend the most money on that media??

Quite literally since time in memorial this is been proven over and over and over again.

There is a reason bands release their music for free on YouTube.

There is a reason many new authors post themselves reading their works for free as audiobooks on YouTube.

There's a reason publishers will give away thousands of free ebooks in advance of a new publication in a series.

Because they know, for a fact, That people will discover their work because it is free, or otherwise they would never have purchased an unknown.

Anyways.

TL;DR: Free access to ebooks does not mean people "won't buy books" , it will just mean people who can't afford to buy books *will be able to read books*, and even publishers know this and will give away an entire series for free to get people to read the newest release.

The exact same way as borrowing a book from the library or a friend or a community little free library doesn't directly support an author monetarily for each reader, but *does* get them exponentially more people reading their book, who are much more likely to go on and buy them when they release, and buy their own copies.

New iOS 17.4 Features Will Change Your iPhone Experience

Apple released iOS 17.4 beta. For iOS developers and public beta testers, download MacOS 14.4 beta 2, watchOS 10.4 beta 2, and tvOS 17.4 beta 2. Apple updated iOS 17.4 for the iPhone and App Store to comply with 27 EU countries’ Digital Markets Act.

When will iOS 17.4 be available?

Apple is expected to release iOS 17.4’s final version in the first week of March 2024. The final reveal window was scheduled to comply with Apple’s EU legal obligations.

The Digital Markets Act requires Apple to update the iPhone and App Store by March 6. Based on that, Apple may release iOS 17.4 before March 6.

Transcripts of Apple Podcasts

Podcast transcripts were added to Apple Podcasts in iOS 17.4. This feature lets users read the entire episode transcript, search for a word or phrase, and tap on text to jump to a section. As an episode plays, every word is highlighted like Apple Music lyrics.

Apple automatically generates transcripts for new episodes. For archived episodes, podcast transcripts will be added in English, French, German, and Spanish.

For HomePod, SharePlay

With iOS 17.4, Apple has added HomePod speakers to the SharePlay music control list.

If you grant permission, family members and friends can use this feature to choose what music plays on your HomePod. It’s only available on the Music app for the time being, and anyone else can participate without having to have an Apple Music subscription.

You can request access to music playback controls by having someone else scan a QR code with their iPhone or Android smartphone while you’re enjoying a song on your iPhone by tapping the SharePlay icon at the bottom of the screen. All it takes to give access to anyone in the world remotely is a screenshot of the QR code.

Last year, Apple introduced a feature similar to this for CarPlay, enabling anyone within the vehicle to manage music playback through SharePlay with authorization.

Capability of sideloading games and apps

Although iOS 17.4 is finally opening the door for third parties to have their own iPhone app store, users will still not be able to download any app from the internet and install it on their devices. This will enable users in the European Union to install apps from sources other than the official App Store. Since the iPhone’s launch, Apple has prohibited users from sideloading or installing non-App Store apps without jailbreaking their device. The iOS 17.4 update has changed this.

Payment gateways operated by third parties

App developers can now include their own payment gateways with this feature, which is again exclusive to Europe. As a result, subscription apps like Spotify may become much more affordable. Additionally, it may make it possible for platforms like Netflix to finally allow users to sign up for their services directly from the app. As a result of this development, some apps and games may now be more affordable because developers are no longer required to pay up to 30%. Furthermore, users in Europe should be able to make contactless payments using other wireless payment services that resemble Apple Pay thanks to this modification.

Third-party engine-equipped browsers

With iOS 17.4, developers will be able to create web browsers free from the constraints imposed by web kit. This particular policy modification will support the creation of completely unique web browsers by brands for iPhones. Opera has already declared that it is developing a web browser with AI capabilities that will be accessible for iPhones soon.

Protection against stolen devices

Along with adding new “stolen device protection” guidelines with iOS 17.4, Apple is also making your iPhone much more secure. According to these guidelines, in order to remove an Apple ID from an iPhone or perform a factory reset, you may need to provide both a pincode and a Face ID/Touch ID biometric authentication.

ID for the region

The new regional identifier in iOS 17.4, which allows Apple to automatically determine a user’s specific region and likely help the company limit several previously mentioned features to the Europian region, may make it slightly more difficult to change the country or region on an iPhone, even though it was previously fairly simple to do so.

Stopwatch for real-time events

The stopwatch can now be accessed through the live activity feature of an iPhone running Dynamic Island. Just launch the app for the clock. When you return to the home screen after starting the stopwatch, Dynamic Island’s timer will be visible. You must either own an iPhone 14 Pro or an iPhone 15 series device in order to use this feature.

Siri gets more powerful

Siri is also becoming much smarter with iOS 17.4, as the personal assistant can now use the Message with Siri service to send messages in multiple languages. This lets users send messages through iMessage while simultaneously receiving straightforward audio prompts in multiple languages.

A revamp for the music app

With iOS 17.4, Apple is also making changes to the user interface of the music app. The listen now button has been replaced with the home button, which will direct you to a new menu that includes recently played music and recommendations, especially if you are a subscriber.

Il tutto intervenendo direttamente sulle impostazioni della nostra app; - Rilevamento di tappeto o di altre superfici rialzate; - Mocio integrato usa e getta al termine di ogni esercizio; - Possibilità di salvare sull'applicazione più di 10 mappe; - In grado di superare soglie alte almeno 2 cm; - 4 livelli di aspirazione; - Controllo vocale. CONNETTIVITÀ, TECNOLOGIA E PERSONALIZZAZIONE L'aspirapolvere K10+ è progettato con una particolare tecnologia chiamata SilenTech. Rifacendoci alle varie funzionalità del k10+, parliamo non a caso di tecnologia intelligente, in quanto il mini robot usa la navigazione LiDAR per muoversi. Ovvero è in grado di realizzare una mappatura della stanza proprio per riuscire a capire dove sta andando. Per quanto riguarda il centro di controllo, il piccolo aspirapolvere presenta un'app tutta sua, con un'interfaccia pulita, intuitiva e davvero molto semplice da utilizzare. L'app consente di accedere ad una moltitudine di funzionalità e di "personalizzare" come preferite il lavoro del dispositivo. Infatti, è possibile programmare i cicli di pulizia in base alla vostra routine quotidiana. Potete, per esempio, impostare zone vietate, che non sarà consentito al robot oltrepassare o impostare il tempo di pulizia per ogni stanza, scandendo l'orario da rispettare al secondo. Vi stupirete nel notare quanto il K10+ sia  diligente ed "obbediente". Ma le sorprese non finiscono qui. Per tutti gli appassionati della tecnologia ad attivazione vocale, sappiate che potete sincronizzare l'app del K10+ sia con Alexa, sia con Google Assistant. In questo modo, per dare inizio ad un nuovo ciclo di pulizia o per avviare semplicemente l'aspirapolvere, non vi servirà altro che pronunciare il comando ad alta voce. Come se non bastasse, l'app è in grado di connettersi anche con altri gadget intelligenti, come le fotocamere per esempio. Insomma il K10+ non è assolutamente un semplice robot aspirapolvere, ma un dispositivo studiato al fine di semplificarvi letteralmente la vita. Proprio grazie a questo enorme pacchetto di funzioni messo a vostra disposizione, in maniera ovviamente gratuita e senza dover affrontare alcun costo accessorio. AUTONOMIA Una particolarità davvero unica dell'aspirapolvere K10+, riguarda il suo grado di autonomia. Il dispositivo infatti, quando la batteria è scarica, torna in maniera assolutamente autonoma e senza bisogno di alcun comando, alla stazione base per ricaricarsi. Una volta che la batteria ha raggiunto la sua capacità ottimale, l'aspirapolvere torna sull'ultimo punto pulito per continuare il suo lavoro dove lo aveva interrotto e portarlo al termine. Insomma, una tecnologia in cui l'intelligenza artificiale ha davvero raggiunto il suo massimo vertice e che assicura che il dispositivo sia sempre pronto all'azione.
