One of my favourite bits of media history trivia is that back in the Elizabethan period, people used to publish unauthorised copies of plays by sending someone who was good with shorthand to discretely write down all of the play's dialogue while they watched it, then reconstructing the play by combining those notes with audience interviews to recover the stage directions; in some cases, these unauthorised copies are the only record of a given play that survives to the present day. It's one of my favourites for two reasons:
It demonstrates that piracy has always lay at the heart of media preservation; and
Imagine being the 1603 equivalent of the guy with the cell phone camera in the movie theatre, furtively scribbling down notes in a little book and hoping Shakespeare himself doesn't catch you.

People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.
For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.
The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.
So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.

So I'm seeing a bunch of posts around these days suspiciously trying to tie shows being cancelled to the recent rise in piracy due to the uptick in streaming costs.
So I thought I'd remind everyone if the time Olan Rogers was forced to pirate the third season of Final Space because Warner Brothers had cancelled and memory holed it as a tax write off. A show HE CREATED.

That was back in 2022, before the hikes, before the mass wave of streaming sub losses. Don't let people fool you, it's not piracy that's killing your favorite shows. It's corps doing the same bullshit they always do.

Dear Friends,
Pirate media.
I have a friend in the animation industry who was just laid off, along with several other animators in the company. (The industry is in a bad slump, he tells me.) We met because I am an avid fan of a show he worked on, and because of this, he knew he could come to me now. He needed high res footage of an episode he worked on so he could include it on his demo reel.
That's right. Animators don't automatically get access to high res animation that they made.
But because I have a pirated high res copy of every episode of the series in question, I was able to not only provide him with the episode he needed, I was able to offer my services, through him, to anyone of his former coworkers who need to get their hands on high res footage of the show.
Pirate media. You never know when you will literally be able to help someone by doing it.

Idk where else to look for so I'm asking the Tumblr Gods to see if anyone can help
Is there any way of ripping a program off a game disk designed for windows 95/98? Specifically 2 chess games in what looks like CDs or DVDs.
They're legit copies, not CDs containing ISOs, and I'm afraid that using my windows 11 laptop could somehow fuck up the disc's contents
Any help is appreciated!

Saying you should buy AAA games to support the devs is like saying you should buy clothes from companies that use child labor to support the kids

My intentionally reductive and facetious take on piracy is that everyone should be legally allowed to pirate one (1) thing, with the understanding that anyone involved in the creation of said thing has the option of sending you a personalized message that may or may not be "strongly-worded" and that you are legally obligated to read
