Honestly I think the so-called ‘iPhone face’ is just either filler/surgery or a lack of commitment to period accurate hair and makeup.
I know very little about make up especially in historical context but a laminated brow, heavy contour or glossy look can catch your eye when you know that’s wasn’t common or invented in the era. Somewhere in your brain you go ‘huh something seems off’
Makeup can completely change your face and so can hair. Like yeah a modern hairstyle will make the actress stick out like a sore thumb in a period drama. Hell there’s a lot of actors that have this issue bc people don’t consider that men’s haircuts are also different depending on the time period.
‘iPhone face’ is more ‘yeah they look too much like a tiktok influencer for me to buy this’

Forgive me in saying this as I appreciate both shows tremendously but I gotta say...
Band of Brothers feels so much more natural as a historic piece than Masters of the Air. Honestly, I think a lot of hair, makeup, sets, and actors of Masters of the Air look wayyyyy too modern and kinda jarring to see (especially with female characters). The crazy thing is that Masters of the Air had a bigger budget too, but to me, it somehow looks worse than BoB

I get that "smartphone face" and "natural face" were created as critiques of same face plastic surgery homogeny, but it has started going into the territory of making fun of non-white features. Like, i saw a tiktok today comparing and making fun of celebrities, and the vast majority of people in the "smartphone face" category were just ethnic people with ethnic features like Jenna Ortega and Michael B. Jordan. Unsurprisingly, the creator had their comments off, but just as a reminder for people who want to make this joke, make sure that when youre talking about smartphone face you are referring to something worthy of critique (like white celebrities getting plastic surgery to look mixed) rather than people born with these features that have only recently come to be considered "trendy" or "fashionable".

I think I do have IPhone face and in my opinion that’s probably due to the fact that I’m an European mutt. The biggest percentile in my genome is only 37% my ancestors got around, I have a face that only hundreds of years of traveling can make.

my theory on why the current crop of young actors don’t feel like true movie stars yet is that theyre not making cowboy movies anymore. theyre not putting young upcoming actors in cowboy movies and thats why none of them can be truly great. you want me to take “jacob elordi” seriously when he wont get his ass on a horse and WORK? you think “jenna ortega” is down to go out west and pitch some hay? Get some dirt on these faces. make em sweat. force them to put on the dumbest southern accent you’ve ever heard. this is deeply essential to the texture of stardom. if you want the rewards of being a good actor you have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being in a cowboy movie with a troubled and gruelling production that ultimately flops. We’ve destroyed our ecosystem. What are we doing
