I saw someone earlier this week talking about how antis think that the only reason people ship Zutara is because they look good. That's not true. Not even slightly, but you all know that. That's not my point. My point is, if aesthetics is the reason why you ship Zutara, I see you, and I appreciate you, and you're 👏🏾right 👏🏾. Katara and Zuko are absolutely stunning, together and apart. Aesthetics is a perfectly valid reason to ship a couple, and you are valid. Looks is about 90% of the reason I ship Irohsami. Never, ever let anyone make you feel bad about shipping pretty people, okay?

I couldn't take Korrasami as a ship seriously because back when LOK B1 was airing literally everyone was shipping Korra with. Literally every one (Korra and the Doorman in Revelations, Tarrlok, Lin Beifong, Tahno, etc. Korra x Asami shipping happened at the same time).

Actually I couldn't take any shipping seriously because how ready everyone was to ship every character with someone else (Jinora with Skoochy was a really big one even thought they never talked, Bolin x Asami, IROH II AND ASAMI??!!?!?!)

Beauty and the beast- brave and beautiful daughter of an inventor? And Korra would be a good beast. She gives off furry vibes and has anger issues.

Makorra:

The swan princess -Mako has enough social ineptitude to offend a woman in five syllables or less. Korra will wreak havoc as a swan tho. Have you ever been pecked by a swan? They have serrated beaks. Serrated beaks!

Rapunzel- magical girl isolated from the world and insecure boy with ties to crime? Excellent. Make her hair turn silvery blue like healing water.

Masami:

Hunchback of Notre Dame- but Asami is Phoebus and Mako is Esmeralda because fuck gender norms. I imagine in this AU Hiroshi is the Frollo and is hunting down benders or smth. Bolin can be the goat.

Aladdin- hot independent princess and street rat boy. Need I say more? Let Korra be the genie.

Weilin:

Anastasia- Due to an uprising the Beifongs, who are either royalty or nobles in this AU, i haven't yet decided have to flee their home. But an eight year old Wei doesn't make it and after sustaining a head injury, forgets who he is. Mako and Bolin are conmen (which is sorta in line with canon, they did scams as kids) and are trying to find someone to pose as the lost prince in order to collect the reward money the royal family offers for his return. (Though i might make Varrick take the tole of Vlad) They find Wei and he seems perfect for the job. (Haven't yet decided who is gonna be Rasputin. Aiwei maybe?)

Atlantis- Bolin and a group of other adventurers travel to the lost city of Zaofu, where the Beifong family live and Wei becomes very interested in the outsider. [Hnnn i need to draw the 'you do swim, do you not?' Scene with them]

Kainora:

Peter pan - Jinora and her siblings travel to Neverland with Kai and have child friendly adventures complete with puppy love. Good for them.

Bopal( im sorry bopal shippers, but i like despise this ship so not much for them. I did my best tho):

Wild Swans (from Mikhail Baryshnikow's 'Stories from my childhood') - As a result of an evil witch's spell, Opal's brothers ( and heck, toss Kuvira in there too) are turned into swans and their parents forget the existence of their children. Opal takes on the arduous task of shirts out of stinging nettles for them, while maintaining a vow of silence, the only way to break the spell. While her siblings are away, Opal is found by prince Bolin. Due to the fact that she needs to remain silent to break the spell, she is unable to explain the situation, so Bolin takes her back to his castle and they fall in love. But soon people start to suspect Opal of witchcraft. (The prince is super goofy in that movie and also preforms an opera ballad for the princess and i can see bolin standing under Opal's window singing : WHERE IS YOUR HEART?)

for the relationship ask game - 11 (Barry & Cisco), 34, & 47

11. [Barry and Cisco] have just stumbled into a fairy ring, and they've forgotten they ever knew each other! What happens now?

My mind went right to that episode of s3 where Barry got amnesia and fell in love with Iris all over again. In a world with Barrisco endgame...he'd be falling for Cisco (all over again, ofc, because he had a crush on Cisco the whole time in this version of events). And since both of them lose their memories, Cisco would be gushing about Barry too.

But of course they'd both try to disguise it as "friendly banter," because neither of them wanna scare off the cute guy who seems to really like them (platonically, they think. Oh, these lovable idiots).

Caitlin and Iris realize that these two will get their memories back by kissing. And both of them know that Barry and Cisco have been crushing on each other for ages, and are still flirting now, but...how to convince them to go for it?

So shenanigans ensue, in which Caitlin and Iris try to set them up, except those plans go a bit awry. But also, in a way, those plans still succeed, because Barrisco fall more in love with each other until one day they go for it and kiss. And all is well!

(Except they "forgot" where the fairy circle was, so the following week, Caitlin and Iris get stuck there 😉)

I love your writing, and I saw on your blog that you ship IrohSami. Would you ever conisder writing a fic around them?

Probably not, tbh. I don't care enough about LoK or the characters to devote much time to them, except maybe the kataang kids. But even then, I don't think I'd ever give them more than a one shot. I prefer living in the world where Katara and Aang never get together, and Iroh II and Asami might not even exist in that universe

2023 Year-End Fic Round Up

Words written (published or not, WIPs totally count too!):  Published has hit 84,800. I have 4 major WIPS with about 18K words among them. Then there’s the short stuff that I haven’t been as focused on this year for some reason.

Smut scenes written (if applicable): 1, but I suspect it’s too boring to bother publishing.

New things I tried: Technically, my collaboration with @slowdissolve started in 2022, but it was late December, and most of the work happened in 2023, so it counts.

Fic I spent the most time on: Red Jade, hands down. This one-shot joke has turned into an amazing experience working with Slowdissolve. It’s now twice the length of my other long stories, and I think we’re at about 60% done.

Fic I spent the least time on: I Just Wanted You. Written at the end of a very bad, terrible, no-good day.

Favourite thing I wrote: Other than Red Jade? Probably First Day Jitters because I was actually happy with what could be a really wrenching idea if I go with it.

Favourite thing I read: Nope. This, I cannot do. There’s the Hands that Heal series. There’s @wishingforatypewriter’s Linzolt stories. There’s @orangepanic Irohsami oeuvre. There’s Slowdissolve’s Discipline of the Mind. And there's so much more - and this is only in the ATLA/LOK fandom.

Writing goals for next year:

Bring Red Jade to a satisfying conclusion.

Accomplish Angstpril.

Start on a new Kyalin project with @slowdissolve.

You won’t be surprised to hear I’ve been following the news closely. I think I can help.

A. Sato.

Isoru! The fic I really ought to get back to and a setting I am keen to talk about, so thank you for the ask! There’s a few different components in this, so apologies if the reply rambles a little.

First, ref: Ursa’s remarks, I think there’s some commentary on both the context of including it, and the content too. On context, I wrote this with a bit of an eye towards the sort of role a member of the Fire Nation royal family might have in a crisis situation. My sense was that while Ursa is not a professional diplomat, as a very visible symbolic representative of her country, she has particular utility in public diplomatic efforts (this leaves aside the liaison value-add of her brother being the UF military C-in-C, of course). Hence, it felt appropriate to have a major intervention in the narrative come via comments to press.

Regarding the context of her remarks, the language is quite modern/real world in some respects (“We therefore, here in Britain, stand shoulder to shoulder with our American friends” to quote Tony Blair), but the sentiment is linked into the LOK world-state. I think the Fire Nation, while far from abandoning the military instrument of national power, has huge sensitivities regarding deployment of ground troops into the Earth Kingdom. This is both a cultural piece, but also political; leaving aside the textual comments Ursa makes about their reception in the EK, there are likely domestic revanchists in the Fire Nation who would be emboldened.

Also – the reference to abuses of human dignity is a stealthy shout-out to the Conventions on the Protection of Innocents and Respect for the Dignity of the Human Person (also known as the Cranefish Conventions), from another one of my fics.

Second, the newspaper headlines; I love newspapers very much! The thinking here is to represent a spectrum of opinion – of course The Times of Caldera dodges the whole issue and notes only the joint resolve of the two nations, while the Gazette is an even-handed broadsheet. Equality Now is particularly interesting (I think, anyway) because it references a broader headcanon I have that the Equalist movement had strong nationalist shades, focusing its ire on foreign benders. And Star of Teyana being militaristic is a reference to some of my thinking on the United Forces’; Teyana is a major base for them.

Last, with Asami! So the Airlift was initially envisaged as part of a series of stories called ‘Sato’s War’ which was predicated on the assumption of Asami Sato becoming heavily enmeshed within the United Forces’ and Kuvira’s efforts to manage conflict in the Earth Kingdom* - with all the moral peril and interesting high-tech shenanigans involved. In general, I think she is the sort of woman who wants to solve problems, particularly technical ones, and whether one is an Irohsami shipper or not, she definitely has a working relationship with Iroh in any event.

*Chapter 3 of the story would feature Asami flying on a secret diplomatic mission to Kuvira to request her army supports United Forces troops cut off in Isoru; in my notes, I have a line from Iroh where he muses that Asami “has a face which could launch a thousand ships; no doubt her words could re-route an armoured brigade.” On a less self-indulgent note, I think there is some rich story-telling material in the connection between Kuvira and the United Forces during the timeskip which would be great to unpick.
