Life of Pi (2012)

If Life of Pi was merely the story of Piscine "Pi" Patel (Suraj Sharma), surviving a shipwreck only to find himself stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker for 227 days, it would still be a great film. It’s gorgeous and profound, with many scenes you wish you could rip off the screen and frame on your wall. But this isn’t just a harrowing, emotionally-charged, struggle for survival. There is a turning point towards the end that asks you to reconsider everything. Your reaction to it says a lot about who you are.

Before we discuss what the film is ultimately all about, let’s talk about the presentation. This is a special effects-heavy production with some stunning visuals. Particularly effective is the use of color to reflect the protagonist's mood and the use of the water’s reflective surface. There are some great bits of symmetrical imagery here. The images are so convincing you'll only realize director Ang Lee did not shoot this film on the Pacific Ocean once the end credits begin rolling.

The story would have still worked with so-so special effects but the illusion is so persuasive you become immersed in the emotional journey. You're gripped as Pi figures out how to find food, water, shelter and a way home. That's just the beginning, once Pi masters his situation, he eventually becomes comfortable enough to relax and drink in the full majesty of his situation.

If you’re watching the film at home, it probably won’t be in 3D, which is a shame. The flat Blu-ray does approximate the impact it had in theatres by having certain animals and objects jump out of or into your view by passing through the black bars above and below the main picture. You'd think most of this adventure would be fairly static; centered around the lifeboat, the water around it and the passengers but Pi's near-death experience gives him an insight into the divine. The narration throughout along with the visuals helps convey so much and combined with Pi’s own, bizarre upbringing, they form an insightful look at a young man’s journey toward the meaning of life.

This brings us to the point where Rafe Spall’s character (never named) is given an alternate story to the one we just saw. It’s gruesome (though perhaps not as ghoulish as in the book), dark, depressing, upsetting and lacking in any wonder whatsoever. Once this other story ends, the now-grown Pi (played by Irrfan Khan) asks the listener (and the audience), which story they prefer. As we contemplate them, he reminds us that neither can be proven or disproven. The story you ultimately choose says a lot about you. Before you pick, consider that you never questioned anything previously, no matter how ridiculous. The origin of the boy’s name, the way he memorized all those numbers to prevent himself from being ridiculed at school, his co-existence with the tiger on the raft, the miracle of the school of flying fish, the island of meerkats and the tooth Pi discovers on it, and so on. Before being presented with a more “realistic” viewpoint, you never doubted there was magic, beauty and hope in the world. Earlier in the film, Pi mentioned how doubt is not only inescapable but also necessary in one’s faith. Which story are you choosing? Which story do you think happened? Do you wish you could change either of your answers? Does that detail about whether or not bananas float change your mind?

Anyone who looks at Life of Pi becomes entranced. This story of a boy and the tiger that threatens his life but also becomes his friend is moving. You cannot forget this story, certainly not after the bombshell that comes right before the ending of the film; a masterfully handled turn that makes the movie more than a passive experience. You have to think about what you just saw and consider what you will do with it once you (like the hero), return to the real world. It’s a movie that changes you, which makes it a masterpiece. Sep 13, 2022 12:25 IST Mumbai (Maharashtra) , September 13 (AF): Kamaal R Khan is finally out of jail, and after coming out, as expected, he informed that he lost 10 kilos during his 10-day long stay at the jail because he didn't consume anything but water! In a tweet he wrote, "I was surviving with only water for 10 days in lockup. So I have lost 10 kg weight."

In earlier tweets, he thanked Bollywood veteran Shatrughan Sinha without specifying any reason. He wrote, "Thank you very much @ShatruganSinha Ji for your support. Love you." On September 11, he revealed that he is back home after being in judicial custody for ten days. He wrote, "I am back and safe at my home. I don't need any revenge from anyone. I have forgotten whatever bad thing happened with me. I believe, it was written in my destiny."

Last week, his son took to his Twitter account and posted a request directed to actors Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He claimed that Kamaal R Khan's life is in danger and that he needs to be out of prison because of the harsh treatment being meted out to him. He wrote, "I am KRK' son Faisal Kamaal. Some people are torturing to kill my father in Mumbai. I am just 23years old living in London. I don't know how to help my father. I request @juniorbachchan @Riteishd and @Dev_Fadnavis ji to save my father's life. Me n my sister will die without him."

KRK was arrested as soon as he landed in Mumbai from Dubai on August 30. According to the police, KRK was arrested over FIR against his controversial social media posts back in 2020. The FIR was lodged on the basis of a complaint by Yuva Sena leader Rahul Kanal on April 30, 2020, where he alleged that KRK's tweets on the late Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor allegedly spread "hatred". Rahul had said in the FIR that a person named Kamal R Khan regularly spreads hatred on social media. "He came into Bollywood with a movie named 'Deshdrohi' and is really acting like one. Even when the world is going through a pandemic, I can't understand his inhumane behaviour and spreading hatred in all spheres of life." The complainant said KRK was making hateful comments against late actors Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor. "After Irrfan Khan, who is India's pride, passed away, he was making poor claims and statements on him. He was also talking crap about senior actor late Rishi Kapoor also," he said in the complaint. He also said that KRK is not in the country and requested PM Modi to file a case against him. The same day he was sent into 14-day judicial custody. On September 5, KRK was arrested by Versova Police for allegedly demanding sexual favours from an actress and holding the complainant's hand in the first week of January 2019. As news of Irrfan Khan's hospitalisation spread on Tuesday evening, the actor's spokesperson released a statement Actor Irrfan Khan died on Wednesday in Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where he was being treated for an colon infection. A statement released by his family said that Mr Khan spent his final hours "surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about." Just hours ago, the actor's spokesperson said in a statement that Mr Khan was "still fighting the battle." The Piku star, one of Indian cinema's most respected thespians, battled a tumour for several months and returned to Mumbai some months ago after being treated in London. Irrfan Khan is survived by his wife Sutapa and two sons. Yesterday, his spokesperson confirmed that he had been taken to the intensive care unit and later, dismissed rumours that Irrfan Khan had died. Read the statement released on behalf of Irrfan Khan's family: "I trust, I have surrendered"; These were the some of the many words that Irrfan expressed in a heart-felt note he wrote in 2018 opening up about his fight with cancer. And a man of few words and an actor of silent expressions with his deep eyes and his memorable actions on screen. It's saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away. Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him. After having been struck by lightning in 2018 with the news of a rare cancer, he took life soon after as it came and he fought the many battles that came with it. Surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about, he left for heaven abode, leaving behind truly a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace. And to resonate and part with his words he had said, "As if I was tasting life for the first time, the magical side of it." Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar, who directed Irrfan Khan in Piku, tweeted: "My dear friend Irrfan. You fought and fought and fought. I will always be proud of you.. we shall meet again.. condolences to Sutapa and Babil.. you too fought, Sutapa you gave everything possible in this fight. Peace and Om shanti. Irfaan Khan salute," he tweeted. As news of Irrfan Khan's hospitalisation spread on Tuesday evening, the actor's spokesperson released this statement: "Yes, it is true that Irrfan Khan is admitted to ICU at Kokilaben in Mumbai because of a colon infection. We would keep everyone updated. He is under doctor's observation. His strength and courage have helped him battle and fight so far and we are sure with his tremendous willpower and prayers of his well wishers, he will recover soon." Irrfan's wife Sutapa Sikdar and his sons Babil and Ayan Khan were also reportedly at the hospital. On Wednesday, a fresh statement was released warning against premature reports of Mr Khan's death. It's really disappointing to know that there are extreme assumptions being made about Irfan's health. While we are truly appreciative that people are concerned, it's disheartening to see some sources spread extreme rumours and creating panic. Irrfan is a strong person and is still fighting the battle. We really request you to not fall for rumours and not partake in these conversations which are fictional," the actor's spokesperson said. Irrfan Khan was diagnosed with an neuroendocrine tumour in March 2018, soon after which he flew to London for treatment. He returned to India in February 2019 to shoot Angrezi Medium and flew back to London after a brief stay. The actor returned to India in September last year after surgery and treatment in London. Irrfan Khan's mother Saeeda Begum died at the age of 95 on Saturday morning in Jaipur. According to news agency ANI, Irrfan, who couldn't travel from Mumbai due to the coronavirus lockdown, paid his last respects to his late mother through a video conferencing session. Irrfan Khan was last seen in Angrezi Medium, which released a little over a week before the lockdown was imposed in India.
