Today's spotlight is for Board Games, another story I wrote while being on semi-mandatory rest. And it was so fun!
Fair warning for sillyness: Squall is playing Twister in this one, so yeah!
Read it on AO3 or FF.net.
For maximum effect, you can listen to the song that semi-inspired this:

Brisk Mornings
Summary: After a mission outside Balamb Garden (Y/N) is bedridden, and Squall's the only one who's available to look after her.
Pairing: Squall Leonhart x Reader (he deserves more love!)
Themes: Sick (Y/N), fluff

Ugh. Why had Dr. Kadowaki left him with her? Caretaking was barely his strong suit, hell, neither was caring about anything at all. Or at least that's what he told himself.
Her face was a familiar one. A SeeD who had also been trained at Balamb Garden. She had graduated from the program a few months before him and already gone on a handful of missions. Even if they hadn't been part of the same class, he knew her. In a place as small as the Garden, everybody knew everyone. Even a guy who kept to himself.
Well, those people who seemed to insist on sticking around him, Zell, Selphie, Quistis, they were definitely to blame as well, at least partly. They kept pushing him into interacting with others more. Especially Irvine and Rinoa. So he had greeted her a couple times in the Garden hallways, albeit hesitantly. She had always responded with a kind smile.
So why weren't they taking care of her? Clearly they knew more about that kind of stuff than he did. He wasn't a nurse. He was a mercenary. Trained to fight. Not trained to do... Well, this.
He had to admit though, the silence was nice. It was always quiet here in the infirmary, away from the bustling hallways and energetic students. She was asleep so watching over her wasn't that bad. It's not like he had to force himself to find something to say.
From what he had heard, she had been sick ever since she came back from her mission. It had been outside Balamb, so it wouldn't surprise him if it had been a virus that was foreign to her body. SeeDs were trained to withstand the worst of conditions, so something as mere as what seemed to be a cold shouldn't knock them down so easily. But alas, here she was. Here they were.
Watching her peaceful face, he did feel a twinge of protectiveness in his chest.
"Mm..."
He had been so caught up in his trainwreck of thoughts that he hadn't even noticed her shifting around on the infirmary bed. Blue eyes darted back to her as she struggled to sit up, holding a hand to her head. The headache and stuffiness in her nose was just unbearable, making it difficult to focus on anything else. She hadn't been aware that she wasn't alone in the room, not until she opened her eyes and noticed a gentle but disgruntled presence at her side.
"Don't push it."
"Squall?"
He was standing by her bed, his gaze as fierce as it always was, almost reprimanding. It's the kind of thing that scared others off the first time they met Squall, but in time it became clear that it was simply part of his demeanor. He was always so tense, attentive, weary, as any well-trained mercenary would be.
She tried to show him a smile but the wave of feverish heat that went through her was unbearable, making her double up with a groan as she grasped her head tightly. Shivering, she could feel a pair of gloved hands gently but awkwardly guide her back down on the mattress.
"I'm here."
A belated answer to her question from earlier. Eyes screwed shut, she pulled the thin sheet over her body as it was wracked by trembles. Truly, she was embarrassed to be in such a state from a mere cold. When she opened her eyes and saw Squall standing next to her bed it was like she was seeing him through a blurry veil, a feverish haze covering her senses. It was difficult to acknowledge any of what was going on around her and all she could really focus on was his presence. It was stiff, but calm.
"I'm sorry..."
She managed to whimper out with a cough, hiding beneath the blankets slightly. He only seemed more disgruntled then, shaking his head as he crossed his arms.
"Don't apologize. Just focus on getting better."
Right. She nodded weakly, shivering as she curled up, facing away from him. Even as she closed her eyes she could still feel his presence there, silent, watchful. In a way it almost felt like he was guarding her.
"Thanks for watching over me, Squall."
Without needing to see him she could practically feel him look off to the side, tightening his stance.
"Whatever."
His response did make her smile, cold and indifferent as it may have seemed. It didn't take her long to fall back into an empty sleep, her body seized by fever. And so silence fell back over the room as Squall stood there, making sure nothing happened to her. It was calm, peaceful, a bit chilly.
A brisk morning, like the kind he liked.

I saw someone do this in another fandom and I had to try because... these are things I think about anyway. So...
What would Final Fantasy VIII characters' Spotify Wrappeds look like?
Squall - This year is the first year Squall has a Wrapped. He didn't listen much before, but somehow, after meeting Rinoa, music just started to make sense. Still, his taste is mostly emo-boy rock. Linkin Park, blink-182, and Paramore are a few of his favorites. There is this one acoustic song that makes him think about Rinoa that he's listened to more than anything else... He doesn't share his Wrapped with anyone, but, of course, Rinoa was able to steal his phone to take a look.
Top Song - Even Now (Acoustic) by Dashboard Confessional
Rinoa - Rinoa loves high-energy music that she can dance to. Kpop, Pop, and pop that yearns to be disco. Sparklely music. Her top artists include BLACKPINK, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Dua Lipa. But her top song ended up being "Steal the Show" by Lauv. She just couldn't stop listening to it after she heard the "I'll be waiting for you" line.
Top Song - Steal the Show by Lauv
Zell - Zell mainly listens to music when he is working out, so he sticks to stuff that is loud, fast, and motivating. He is not opposed to pop but definitely leans more to the rock side of things, with some of his top artists being The Killers, Artic Monkeys, Fall Out Boy, and even Olivia Rodrigo on occasion. His favorite band to box to by far is Dragon Force. Their tempo is perfect for it.
Top Song - My Heart will Go On by Dragon Force
Quistis - Quistis listens to more podcasts than music. However, when she does listen to music, her taste is genre-defying and very specifc. Wetleg, Bloom Twins, Rubblebucket, and girl in red are some of her top artists. She also loved the song "You'd Be Stars" by Sydney Rose. But, "Hot Shame" was such an earworm it took first place this year.
Top Song - Hot Shame by FIGHTMASTER
Selphie - Every year, Selphie's Wrapped surprises everyone. Last year it was filled with belting pop divas. The year before that, it was almost entirely metal. This year, Selphie enjoyed bopping around to Hip Hop and Rap. Juice WRLD, Lil Nas X, and Eminem dominated her Wrapped. When asked about the darkness of some of her top song's lyrics, she said, "It's fun! Like a picnic!"
Top Song - TALES OF DOMINICA by Lil Nas X
Irvine - Irvine is embarrassed to share his Wrapped. He was hoping his manly country music and classic rock would show up, but nostalgic moods led to a top five full quieter indie artists. He listened to a lot of "long-haired magic mushroom men" like Hoizer and Noah Khan.
Top Song - Jackie and Wilson by Hoizer
Laguna - Always the cheeseball, Laguna spent a lot of time jamming out to his early-2000s soft "rock": Maroon 5, Coldplay, John Mayer, Rob Thomas and the like. But in the latter half of the year, he and Ellone started having movie nights, and the soundtracks infiltrated his Wrapped. The movies always seem to have particular themes... so "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and "Journey to the Past" both made it on his top five.
Top Song - Journey to the Past by Christy Altomare (Anastasia)
BONUS: Cat's in the Cradle is on Laguna's top five songs as well. He keeps sending it to Squall and... well, it has 0 listens in Squall's Spotify.

My favorite FFVIII moments from the FF 25th Memorial Ultimania Vol. 2 — Part 2
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Rinoa's "Memorable Quotes." This implies that it's canon for Rinoa to be in Squall's party while he goes to Balamb Garden, and not in Selphie's party while she goes to the Galbadia Missile Base:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Rinoa's "Memorable Scenes." Once again, this implies that it's canon for Rinoa to be in Squall's party while he goes to Balamb Garden, and not in Selphie's party while she goes to the Galbadia Missile Base:
Um, excuse me, "assaults"? "Assault" means to "make a physical attack on" and "the illegal act of causing physical harm or unwanted physical contact to another person, or, in some legal definitions, the threat or attempt to do so." Rinoa literally doesn't physically attack Squall. Hell, she never even touches him throughout this whole scene and the guided tour that comes afterwards. Where the hell is this damn "assault", localization team?
Not to mention that it doesn't match up the rest of the paragraph, which describes the scene more favorably — "convincing him to show her around the Garden", "audacious behavior." I don't know what this sentence looks like in its original Japanese kanji, since these screenshots are from the official English translation, but all I know is that it's a poor word choice to use.
I'm pointing out the incongruity of the word because I'm a survivor of both physical and sexual assault. So when that word is used incorrectly, I take offense.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Quistis's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for Squall, Zell and Selphie to avoid fighting the X-ATM092, leading to the FMV of Quistis destroying it and saving Squall:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Quistis's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for Squall to allow Irvine to form a party with Rinoa and Selphie, leaving Quistis and Zell with him, as they exit Galbadia Garden:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Zell's "Memorable Quotes." This implies that it's canon for Squall to question Zell's leadership and his ability to watch over and protect Edea ("...Not too sure about that") in Lunar Gate:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Zell's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for the Combat King 003 sidequest (a.k.a., the Zell's Love Quest) to be completed:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Zell's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for not only Rinoa to be in Squall's party while he goes to Balamb Garden, but also for Zell to be in his party as well. This also implies that it's canon for Quistis and Irvine to be in Selphie's party while she goes to the Galbadia Missile Base:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Zell's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for the Deep Sea Research Center sidequest to be completed, and for Zell to be in Squall's party throughout the sidequest:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Selphie's "Memorable Quotes." This implies that it's canon for Squall to: 1) not jump off the cliff after Selphie, and instead take the long way around; 2) disagree with Zell about jumping off the cliff ("I don't know about that…"), despite not doing so himself, leading to him calling Zell a "chicken-wuss" like Seifer does and Selphie following him:
Bear in mind, however, that this exchange will actually lower your Attitude score during the SeeD field exam. So, why the Ultimania implies that this exchange is canon is anyone's guess.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Selphie's "Memorable Scenes." Once again, this implies that it's canon for Zell and Rinoa to be in Squall's party while he goes to Balamb Garden, and it's canon for Quistis and Irvine to be in Selphie's party while she goes to the Galbadia Missile Base:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Selphie's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for Selphie and Rinoa to be in Squall's party when they visit Trabia Garden:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Irvine's "Memorable Scenes." Once again, this implies that it's canon for Squall to allow Irvine to form a party with Rinoa and Selphie, leaving Quistis and Zell with him, as they exit Galbadia Garden:
Also, way to go, localization team. The party left Galbadia Garden, not Trabia Garden.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Laguna's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for Zell and Selphie to be in Squall's party when they fight Adel:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Kiros's "Memorable Quotes." This implies that it's canon for Squall to talk to Laguna, Kiros and Ward in the Ragnarok as they prepare to save Ellone:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Kiros's "Memorable Scenes." This implies that it's canon for Quistis and Zell to be in Squall's party when they meet Laguna, Kiros and Ward in Esthar:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Cactuar's "Memorable Feature" in the Monsters section. This implies that it's canon for the Cactuar sidequest to be completed, and for Zell and Irvine to be in Squall's party throughout the sidequest:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under PuPu's "Memorable Feature" in the Monsters section. This implies that it's canon for the PuPu UFO? sidequest to be completed, and for Zell and Rinoa to be in Squall's party throughout the sidequest:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Adel's "Memorable Feature" in the Monsters section. Once again, this implies that it's canon for Zell and Selphie to be in Squall's party when they fight Adel:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Ultimania shows the following below, under Odin's "Memorable Scene" in the Extra Content — Guardian Forces section. This implies that it's canon for Zell and Rinoa to be in Squall's party when they fight Seifer in Lunatic Pandora:

So! FFVIII! Finished it yesterday, loved most of the last stretch! And it totally comes appart the second you think about it too hard!
First what I liked:
Squall and Rinoa, obviously. Their dynamic and respective growths mirroring each other. One who shuts off the world and one who forces herself to seem like this dizzy social butterfly, both because they are terrified of being hated. Their friendship very organically evolve into a romance and the best scenes in the game like the space rescue are always between these two.
Quistis was also the teammate I felt got to do the most. Started off as a mentor, before realizing the mantle of leader was not for her and learning to put her full trust into something other than her instincts. She also had the emotional intelligence to dodge a love triangle when she felt that shit arrive lmao.
The game is also full of really cool setpieces in general. The space rescue, the Gardens themselves, the Lunatic Pandora... And of course, Ultimecia's castle! I absolutely loved the whole dream sequence at the end, how it communicated without words on all of Squall's fears and how Rinoa became the reason he learned to enjoy his life. How he clung to her image like a lifeline even if the time distortion + GF poisoning tried to take it away from him (as it did with Ultimecia if you subscribe to the U=R theory). Like god damn, this was strong stuff.
Speaking of! I'm actually shocked Ultimecia being Rinoa is just a fan theory Square went out of their way to debunk because it seemed so obvious to me from the get go and I wasn't even aware of the theory until I looked into it. I find it weird they decided to just say no to the whole thing instead of keeping it ambiguous, as the game does, because thematically, this makes it a really powerful story, and Ultimecia a much more sympathetic baddie. Like damn, you can do so much with Griever being all she has left of her knight, while her refusal to let go of it twisting her memories to the point she can no longer recognize him when he comes to her from the past, as she wanted. Respectfully gonna kill the author on this one.
Now for the less good stuff... The orphanage plot twist, obviously. Doctor Odine's whole deal. The Norg stuff. I imagine the fact this plot is held together by duct tape is like, the popular opinion at this point. The best parts of this game kind of mostly work in a vacuum.
Also, well... Zell, Irvine and Selphie don't really have any arc to speak of as far as I can tell. Which is a bit disappointing, compared to VII, I wish they all got to do a lot more. They are still my babies but I really didn't care for them as much as I did the other three, and that Is a problem in a seried that lives or die by how much you engage with its characters.
Oh and bro, Seifer. I jokingly compared him to Draco Malfoy and just like Draco they totally half assed his part in the plot. He had strong momentum as a rival character in Disc 1, but the fact Rinoa stops having feeling for him the second he does his heel turn, and that he just wanted to be Ultimecia's knight, regardless of whether it was Edea or Rinoa, TWO WOMEN HE LOVED, is completely ridiculous. He also got a total anticlimax with the most heavy-handed Gilgamesh cameo, and then Fujin and Raijin (the best part of this stupid plot thread) just redeem him off screen where he goes back to Balamb and never gets any comeuppance for actively trying to destroy the world, like, what the hell even was that.
Oh yeah also the gameplay system is jank and I only started having fun with it when I broke it.
That about sums up my thoughts. I'm really happy of my experience with this game, and to finally be done with the Playstation era!~
My X replay is next, and then I'll probably hop straight onto XV.

Opera Omnia Burst Themes 1/?
With Opera Omnia shutting down, I decided to make a few posts about one of my favorite parts of the game: The Burst Weapons. Not because they were a powerful, much sought after weapon tier that gave big numbers with massive benefits, but because I have a love for Final Fantasy music, and what BTs I wanted was strongly dependent on what song would play when used.
These posts are meant to be more for the sake of archiving what there had been more than anything else, but at the very least I am going to list a large number of great FF songs.

FF8 remastered early thoughts.
FF8 remastered is a fun time but I wished it got a remake to tighten up some of its story's themes and gameplay mechanics.
The game does give you optional dialogue but I wish they did went full choice based like lnfamous or later Personas.
A smaller scale social links system would be interesting. For example-Zell is the Chariot, Quistis is the Empress, Irvine is the Magician, Selphie is the Lovers, Seifer is the Hanged Man, Rinoa is the Star etc.
My intro to Squall was KH so it's surprising to hear people found him a divisive character when he first debuted.
a compilation full of sequels, prequels and crossover would be fun.
I thought of a prequel where a kid Squall meets Mickey (FF8 x Epic Mickey) but forgets and an interquel where Squall competes in the Reaper's game (FF8 X World ends with you). ;)
My pitch for FF8-2 would be similar to God of war 2018. It would deal with Squall struggling to be a mentor to a new character.

[FFVIII] Choices
He may be more open to her, but he is still sometimes closed, his feelings are sometimes still jumbled, and he still has a hard time expressing himself, as if he doesn’t know the right words for the things he feels. There are times she knows she can’t hold him too tight or he feels suffocated, and she respects that. It’s part of loving him.
Characters: Rinoa Heartilly, Squall Leonhart, Dr. Kadowaki, Zell Dincht, Irvine Kinneas
Pairing: Rinoa Heartilly/Squall Leonhart
