Werewolves. Love at first sight. And a happy ending that I didn’t think was going to happen at all based on how things turned out with other characters in this book. Definitely a good read!

After having read the Twilight Saga years ago (before the movies came out), I was a super huge fan of both vampires and werewolves. Then the movies came out and ruined all that for me. So, I was kinda skeptical when someone recommended this series to me (despite her telling me it was way better than Twilight). I hate to admit it, but my friend was right. While I did pick up on some similarities between the wolves in this series and the wolves in Twilight, the wolves in Shiver had more personality and were more likable. Because of that, I can’t wait to read the rest of the series and see how these characters develop.

Context: While Sinner isn't officially a part of The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy, I don’t feel like I've truly completed a series unless I've read everything connected to it. Fortunately, companion novels are usually nice, lovely things in their own right while novellas are bafflingly derivative, and Sinner is the former. There may be spoilers ahead for Shiver, Linger, and Forever.

About: Cole St. Clair is in California to film a reality show of the recording of his new album. But really he's in California because it's where Isabel Culpepper, the girl he may or may not be in love with, is currently living. Of all the things Isabel doesn't need in her life, the disaster that is Cole St. Clair is at the top of the list. Her parents have separated after the death of her brother, Jack, and are on the verge of making the split official. While her beauty and her chilly demeanor grant Isabel VIP access into L.A. life, she has difficulty caring about anything these days--except for Cole.

Thoughts: I don't usually pay attention to when things were published; unless it’s part of a series, I read things willy nilly and out of order, but I feel like there's something important that happened here that made Sinner a little better for me than the rest of The Wolves of Mercy Falls. Before Sinner, The Scorpio Races, The Raven Boys, and The Dream Thieves were all published, and I can practically feel it in the pages. It's such a weird thing, but I feel like Stiefvater hit her stride during The Scorpio Races and never looked back. Everything since then has just gotten better. While The Wolves of Mercy Falls is still beautifully written, it just didn't affect me the way the rest of her novels have. The writing in Sinner is the kind of writing I fell in love with in the first twenty pages of The Raven Boys; it's so vivid and on-point it's practically criminal.

I always liked Grace and Sam's love story more than Cole and Isabel's. I adore Isabel, but I've had trouble with Cole as a leading man up until now. In short, it's because life is enough of a disaster that I don't need to add another self-admitted asshole as a romantic interest, even in my fiction. Isabel is still a force to be reckoned with; she steals the show in Sinner as far as I'm concerned, but I didn't mind spending more time with Cole as much as I thought I would. At the very least, there's never a dull moment with him, and--finally--he's trying to be a decent human. It's interesting to see Cole turn his powers to good, and it turns out he's as good at building things as he is at tearing them down.

It's odd how some companion novels become better than the actual series, and I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite between them. On the one hand, the writing and the characters are exquisite in Sinner. On the other, the actual story and its werewolf lore in The Wolves of Mercy Falls are better (plus Grace and Sam). Sinner is only incidentally a werewolf novel; while Cole happens to be one, it's not the point of most of the major plots, and the atmosphere is completely different. Except for that, it could probably be read as a stand-alone novel without too much confusion, and I think it could easily succeed for fans and non-fans of the original series.

Just for a moment, I had the strange idea that I could see exactly what he had looked like when he was younger, and exactly what he’d look like when he was older. It was piercing, a secret glimpse of his future. “Maybe,” he said. “But you won’t let anybody try.” I closed my eyes and swallowed. “I can’t tell the diference between not fighting,” I said,“and giving up.” Despite my eyelids being tightly shut, a single, hot tear ran out of my left eye. I was so angry that it had escaped. I was so angry. Beneath me, the bed tipped as Cole edged closer. I felt him lean over me. His breath, warm and measured, hit my cheek. Two breaths. Three. Four. I didn’t know what I wanted. Then I heard him stop breathing, and a second later, I felt his lips on my mouth. It wasn’t the sort of kiss I’d had with him before, hungry, wanting, desperate. It wasn’t the sort of kiss I’d had with anyone before. This kiss was so soft that it was like a memory of a kiss, so careful on my lips that it waslike a memory of a kiss, so careful on my lips that it was like someone running his fingers along them. My mouth parted and stilled; it was so quiet, a whisper, not a shout. Cole’s hand touched my neck, thumb pressed into the skin next to my jaw. It wasn’t a touch that said “I need more”. It was a touch that said “I want this.” It was all completely soundless. I didn’t think either of us was breathing. Cole sat back up, slowly, and I opened my eyes. His expression, as ever, was blank, the face he wore when something mattered. He said, “That’s how I would kiss you, if I loved you.”

If Maggie writes a kiss better than this for when Blue finally kisses Gansey in trk it will be the only way I will be ok with him dying. This is one of my favorite scenes in all of Maggie’s books. It is so wonderfully writen and every time I read it I am in this character's head. So this kiss better be damn goo or I will feel the emptiness all the other deaths of my favorite characters have left.

Context: Since this is technically the end of The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy, with Sinner being more of a companion novel, I'm going to treat it as the final installment and try to sum up my feelings on the series as a whole. There may be spoilers ahead for Shiver and Linger.

About: After another wolf attack kills a local girl, the wolves of Mercy Falls have never been in more danger. Isabel's father, Tom Culpepper, is trying to organize an aerial hunt to exterminate them once and for all. Cole is still working on a cure, but he may not have it in time to save Grace and the rest of the pack. Sam is struggling with what it means to love and have been raised by the man who deliberately infected him with werewolf toxin, and he fears that the only way to save the pack may be for him to become a wolf again.

Thoughts: This is a solid ending to a well-done series. The writing and the character development are consistently good. The plot is relatively straightforward, with one major problem that is dire enough to take up most of the page time, and a handful of smaller struggles. There are a lot of tense pages toward the end, and I feel like Stiefvater does well in building up the suspense without over-doing it. The wolf hunt is deadly serious, but it's not so complex that she has to pull any rabbits out of her hat to resolve it. I was pleased with the way she wrapped things up.

The Wolves of Mercy Falls is on the better end of the paranormal romance spectrum. The primary relationship, Sam's with Grace, is solid and functional without a lot of unnecessary angst. Sam, especially, goes through significant character development in this book over what it means to truly lead the pack--much as he wishes to escape it. Grace's growing up is harder to track. Becoming a wolf puts a knot in her straightforward plans, and it's a little hard sometimes to watch a character who's so sure of herself flounder in uncertainty. I really enjoyed both of their story arcs, probably more than their relationship arc.

I was less satisfied with Isabel's and Cole's endings, which is probably because they have their own novel after Forever. I ended up liking Isabel a lot more than I expected to from the first book (and Cole was fine, I guess. I don't think he's destined to ever be one of my favorite characters). My favorite thing about The Wolves of Mercy Falls is the same thing I loved from the first book, which is Stiefvater's unique interpretation of werewolf lore. I enjoyed the world while I was in it, and I wouldn't be opposed to re-visiting it again in a few years.
