Eragon and Murtagh are in Carvahall visiting the Stronghammers. They are talking to little Ismira (4-5). Murtagh and Roran both have beards at the point, but Eragon doesn’t. Based on her understanding, Ismira confidently says that Eragon isn’t full grown because he doesn’t have a beard. Murtagh bursts out laughing (maybe choked on his drink a bit). Roran laughs too. Eragon chuckles. Murtagh IS NOT going to let Eragon forget this!
Lmaooooo yes, I love it. Roran and Murtagh bond over this and always tease him about it, too.

Something I love thinking about, Murtagh’s interactions with Ismira when she’s older.
He talks to her like she’s a young lady in the court, like how he did with Essie. He listens intently to her, comments appropriately, gives advice and gentle correction, sometimes gives comfort.
When she’s five or seven years old, he teaches her how to dance. Starting by letting her stand on his feet so she can get used to the feeling of how her legs are supposed to move.
Depending on her height, he levitates her so that she is eye-level with him. She holds his jerkin or shirt in her fist while he keeps a hand at her back to move her along with him.
As she gets older, he teaches her some of the more complicated steps, a spin here while he moves in the opposite direction. He teaches a dance with moments where the lady does something different than the man, but they still stay in harmony.
Sometimes he’ll sing a song from court while they dance. Sometimes he’ll make up his own.
He loves treating his second cousin/niece as he would a lady of the court. To him it’s a game, but it’s also a respect to her station as daughter of the Lord of Palancar Valley.
****
Ismira laughs and giggles with delight during these dances. Sometimes she gets nervous when learning a new step. But Murtagh is always patient with her, teaching her how to properly put her feet, teaching her how to count the beats of a rhythm.
The spins and dips are her favorites. She loves the motion. She feels carefree as she twirls and safe when Murtagh catches her in his arm.
Once she has the dances of Carvahall under her belt, she helps her family help Murtagh brush up on the dance steps for upcoming festivals. While she loves dancing with her father, mother, Uncle Eragon, and her friends, there’s a certain grace, poise and dignity when she dances with Uncle Murtagh. She truly feels like a lady of the court.

#murtagh#murtagh morzansson#ismira stronghammer#ismira inheritance cycle#murtagh inheritance cycle#just love the thought of this man who loves to dance teaching a young child how to dance#even better that she’s family#even better better she is a child of his family that enjoys his company

Eragon is 18 years old, and he has been the first Rider since the Rider's war. Eragon was also the only one to have a "proper" education and training for a rider. He has known that after war, he will be the one to find a place for rebuilding the dragon race and eventually be the new leader of Riders.
He had to leave his family, home, friends, and even love in order to make things right because the dragons from eggs and Eldunari needed him. It was his duty, and he thought that he was the only one who must do all that for Academy and future generations, that it his responsibility, and if he makes a mistake, it will be only his fault.
Eragon knows that he should be a peacekeeper, to keep peace between other races. Eragon was only 15 when he had to fight, he was Varden's only hope to defeat Galbatorix. Everyone was relying on him, and it was a lot of pressure on him. After Nasuada was abducted, Eragon had to become a leader of Varden, and it was hard for him to deal with other leaders, maintain stability in the army, and find weapons that would help him kill Galbatorix.
After the war, he had to help Nasuada. He didn't have time for himself to understand what he wanted. His main goal was only to find a place for future Academy, he didn't even think about other options.
I wonder, has Eragon ever been jealous of Murtagh, because his brother was finally free, free to be, and do anything he wants. Has he ever regretted not going with them to the North?
Eragon probably thinks that eventually he will have time for himself and his own desires but only after many years, maybe even centuries. After everything is finally settled down, but before that he must sacrifice his own desires and needs.
#Eragon hasn't had a break since he was 15#he could travel with Saphira#watch Ismira growing up#explore animals#he was so happy watching the ants (and he was sad about Oromis's reaction) so yeah he could just spend all day doing that#or reading a book about the history of Alagaësia#but ofc Eragon would have a constant feeling of guilt for putting his desires first#eragon#eragon shadeslayer#inheritance cycle

Done. Roran, Katrina and Ismira.
Aaaaaaah - take this before I murder (for legal reasons; I'd never do that). I don't know, maybe I'm bad at seeing orange, but anything in that direction always looks a little dull (it's much better on my drawing tablet and perhaps I also need sleep). In any case; Katrina is supposed to be copper tones.
Anyway; I orientated myself while drawing Roran at the design I made for Selena. Tho he doesn't have the long extra feathers and his tail is similar to what Ismira has - she'll grow those out a little more when she gets older and maybe her feathers will get a tad brighter too. Roran really turned out a lot different than Eragon, I just realized. I blame Brom's blueness xD
I hope everyone who asked for this, finds this and isn't too disappointed lol

I don’t understand how anyone could find Roran from the inheritance cycle boring. I’ve seen a few people mention that they find his chapters dull and I’m like HOW!?
Allow me to present my case.
The defence of Carvahall is one of my favourite sequences of all time. Eldest is definitely my favourite of the 4 main books (still reading murtagh) pretty much because of Roran. And even in the later books every moment with Rorans harebrained schemes and ferocious battles that he barely survives? It’s incredible, keeps me hooked to every word.
Does the fact that he kills nigh on 200 people in one battle seem a bit high? Yes of course, but if you remember the context that he positioned himself and his men in a way that they had to come at him one at a time it does make sense. It’s still Herculean, but he got badly injured in the process, it was only thanks to Carns magic that he didn’t bleed out. He was willing to die to win that battle, and that lends someone strength and stamina beyond normal means.
But more importantly, Roran is intelligent, and he has insane willpower. Like, Eragon admits himself he could never do what Roran has done. His feats of strength and endurance are mental.
But Rorans not just a heartless killer, like Eragon, he struggles with the lives he’s taken, regrets that the deaths were in his opinion necessary. He loves his home and his family and wants a peaceful life for Katrina, Ismira and the other villagers.
His sense of humour is sometimes grim but other times he enjoys having a laugh with his mates. His sense of honour and duty also matter to him.
I also love that despite being a rough, tough, battle hardened warrior, Paolini writes the scene with him breaking down to Katrina about everything he’s been through. He weeps for his loss and the lives he’s taken and the lives of his friends.
His ending is also perfect and so well deserved.
His character is so well written, multi-faceted and every scene he’s in is brilliant, whether it be the excitement of battle, the awe of a cunning plan, the sadness and grief of the realities of war, and the beauty of his love for Katrina, his family and his home.

Every time I come across a child in the Inheritance Cycle, I want them to get a dragon.
Those elf children in Ellesmera? They get dragons. The dwarf children that Eragon meet in Brisingr? That random kid that Eragon rescues from Helgrind? The siblings that Galbatorix took hostage? Riders, all of them.
Hope? Ismira? The best riders.
Essie? Give her a dragon. She will turn her bullies to ash.

The Horned Rider
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/h5wPTo6
by INeedMoreHadesBeforeISwoon
More than a decade after Galbatorix was overthrown, and the Riders' Pact was reforged to include the Urgralgra and Dwarves in the new Order under Eragon Shadeslayer and Saphira Brightscales, a young Urgal struggles to find their place in a world that still doesn't quite know how to make a space for them.
A canon-expansion worldbuilding and OC-focused work-in-progress. May not be everyone's cuppa, but we're supposed to write the content we want to read, and this is where my brain has wanted to go for years.

After the war:
Several years have passed. Ismira is almost a teenager, and she's heard many stories about her uncle Eragon. Unfortunately, with Eragon being so busy with rebuilding the order of the Dragon Riders and reviving an entire species, Ismira hasn't met him since she was a baby.
Roran is a little bit upset about it, but he's not gonna actually say that. Now that he's literate, he simply writes many, many passive aggressive letters to his cousin. Some excerpts:
I hope you and Saphira are doing well, even though whatever you're doing can't be half as fun as watching Ismira teach herself to play the lute. She's terrible at it, but she writes her own songs anyway; they kind of remind me of the songs you used to make up while we were working. So of course I had to teach her 'Picking Lots of Carrots' and 'No I Don't Want Any Bugs on my Lettuce'.
Eragon, the funniest thing happened! Ismira found this blue rock in the woods—I checked it with the traders, apparently it's a fancy mineral-rich rock, but it reminded me of something! Not sure what, exactly.
Last week, Katrina and I nearly passed out from laughter. Your adventures have been stretched into some pretty tall tales, and Ismira came home one day asking about the time you nearly died escaping from Helgrind without Saphira, and only found the will to live because of a bumblebee. I told her that, obviously, her wise Uncle Eragon would never be so stupid as to try and escape from a place like Helgrind without his dragon! Right, Eragon? Tell Saphira hello from me, by the way, I miss complaining about you with her.

I’m not super familiar with the proper way of planning out characters, but I was thinking about how I would personally classify the characters of the inheritance cycle (the first 4 books) into sections. So here we go.
Main characters. Anyone we get a POV from or other characters that are critical for the main story drive to happen, in order of importance: Eragon, Saphira, Galbatorix, Nasuada, Arya, Roran,
Major Characters. Key characters for the story, who have important roles and connections to the main cast, in order of importance: Brom, Murtagh, Glaedr, Oromis, Durza, Angela, Elva, Orik, The Eldunari, Razac, Katrina, Morzan, Thorn,
Secondary Characters. Characters who have a moderate effect on the events of the story or motivations of the main cast, who we spend time with but aren’t super critical, in order of importance: Firnen, Shruikan, Umaroth, Hrothgar, Izlandi, Garrow, Orrin, Jeod, Solembum, Selena, Sloan, Ajihad, Nar Garzhvog, Ismira,
Minor characters: Characters who have some effect, may have multiple scenes dedicated to them, connections to other characters, but aren’t very important, in ANY ORDER: Horst, Grimrr halfpaw, Carn, Lord Dathedr, Blodgharm, Rhunon, Vermund, Jormundur. Varaug, The Head Priest of Helgrind, The Twins, Lord Barst. The Forsworn, The menoa tree, Hvedra,
Side characters: Characters who have a few small scenes scenes or are long dead characters who set up the world, IN ANY ORDER: Vrael, the first Eragon, Vanir, any carvahall villagers, any of the dwarven leaders not already mentioned, Blagden, Martland Redbeard, Captain Brigman, Trianna, Faolin, Jarnunvosk,
Extra characters. Pretty much anyone with a one or maybe two scenes or a connection to another character such as: Yarbog, Helen, Edric, Fredrick, Valdr, Cuaroc, Lord Fiolr, Elvas caretaker, Saphira (broms dragon) etc.
Background characters: anyone else, for example, random named soldiers, Maud, the young priest in helgrind, people who show up once as a part of another persons scene basically, or someone mentioned once or twice by other characters like Thuviel.
Is there anyone I missed? Do you disagree with some of the orders of importance I put people in for the first couple of paragraphs? (Murtagh fans are gonna come for me, but please remember I’m only doing the first 4 books) would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Roran is pretty beat up about Eragon leaving so he's pretty pissy around everyone but Katrina, Ismira and Nasuada.
He sneaks out every night, staring at pebbles and mutter stenr reisa under his breath.
When his son is born, Nasuada invites him for a grand feast and he notices the dragon egg in the throne room.
Every time he hears Firnen flies overhead, he thinks Eragon's returned until he lands and he knows that isn't Saphira's girth.
When Ismira is scouted by Arya and is chosen, Roran rejoices at the chance to maybe see his brother.
When Ismira returns home for the first time with her dragon, he recognises him immediately. He could never forget those Sapphire eyes even if the scales are more green than blue.
When Ismira offers to take him along to meet Eragon when her training finishes, he refuses. He knew would see him when the time comes.

No idea how I've managed to fall back down the Eragon rabbit hole, but I'm just thinking about all those incredible female characters in the Inheritance Cycle. Every single one is interesting and strong and flawed. I love them all so much. Saphira, Arya, Nasuada, Angela, Katrina, Elva, Trianna, Islanzadi, Selena, Elaine, Gertrude, Greta, Ismira, Iorunn, here's an appreciation post for you.
#eragon#arya used to be my fave but tbh I don't really like her MORE than saphira nasuada and angela...
