more of the mutually assured destruction duo, post-prison this time! this one was really fun, thinking about what this dynamic might be like in the future gives me SO much brainrot, im so excited. this one’s also a little dark, so make sure to read the warnings + tags !! :D
tw: implied prison abuse, starvation, toxic relationship, touch starvation, manipulation, panic attack, trauma, blood, injury
Dream hasn't been the same since he escaped prison.
And it's ironic, because Wilbur hasn't even been around, has been in hell for fuck's sake playing Competitive Solitaire for nine-odd years, but even he could've seen the self-destruction hanging like a cloud around the other's head from a million miles (and several months? years?) away. Perhaps, he thinks wryly, you can only see the signs when you've lived them, or maybe red flags don't raise alarm when you’ve painted the entire figure in blood, but it doesn't really matter, in the end, because the final result is the same.
Still, it's just a little funny when he's stopped in the middle of his journey through the Nether, not a piece of armor on him per usual and an unused netherite sword slung over his hip.
"Hello, Sapnap." The kid is standing in front of him, eyes gleaming in badly-hidden anger and desperation, smoke rising from the mottled red-black skin on his hands. "Fancy seeing you around."
"You-" Sapnap sputters, unable to speak as his face flushes red in frustration, and Wilbur smiles at him condescendingly. The expression on the other's face is one he's seen before - one Tommy had been particularly inclined to give him in the past, when his emotions raged so heavily that there was nothing for the pressure to do but build, too thick and heavy to force themselves out of his throat. "You're monsters," Sapnap manages, finally, and Wilbur quirks an eyebrow.
At least we're self-aware, he thinks, the all-too-familiar twinge of irritation at Tommy's - and apparently, Sapnap's particular brand of reckless naivety pulsing at the base of his skull. He lets none of these thoughts show on his face as he cocks his head to the side, smiles wider - and Sapnap, just like Tommy, takes the bait.
'Why are you smiling?" He looks achingly young - they all do, really, their expressions and reactions dripping with a sort of innocence and sincerity that dissolved from Wilbur's own face somewhere around the fifteen-hundreth game of poker, and it really does feel ironic, how quickly the outside world can fall apart compared to the unending constancy of the void - but he digresses.
He didn't know Sapnap well before his whole death thing, and as much as he wants to use his partner to get information on the other members of the server, he doesn't really think Dream is really even lucid enough for that - the man clearly hasn't been thinking clearly, not for a long time. It doesn't matter, though, because you learn to read people when your life becomes nothing but running the same broken-edged memories over and over again in your mind and smiling jaggedly over the same few card games - Wilbur had always been a people watcher, and Sapnap's feelings are stamped on every corner of his face.
"Monster, huh," he says, saying the word slowly, rolling it over his tongue like he's tasting it for the first time, watching from the corner of his eye as Sapnap squirms, "Interesting word you've got here. You use it often?"
Sapnap bristles, smoke curling from his nostrils - "It's what you are, dickhead."
Rolling his eyes internally, Wilbur keeps up the act, humming as he fiddles idly with his cufflink. "I mean, if you really believe that," he rocks forward on his right foot, stifling a smile at the way the younger draws back, "But really, it's all a matter of perspective." He twists himself around, pivoting around his heel, beginning to walk in an arc around Sapnap's left side, watching as he spins around, shoulders drawn up to his ears. "What do you think?"
"I think that you're full of shit," he says, voice flat, and Wilbur laughs. It's genuine, really, because well - Sapnap's different. He's fun; the entire server is, after so long in the void. You can only spend so much time with the same two people before they drive you a little up the metaphorical wall, but Sapnap's reactions are fresh and new and different, still saturated with vitality that hasn’t been leached out by the same deck of cards in the same scarred hands shuffled and reshuffled for eternity. He's interesting, and new, and most of all, predictable.
"Say, Sapnap," he continues, blowing over the other's anger, knowing that it'll only make the frustration build more. He lets his hair flop lazily over one eye, lets his smile grow wider, lips pressed together in amusement, turns his face so that it's lit eerily by the lava lake beneath them. "If we're monsters for, I don't know, setting off a few stacks of TNT," he waves his hand flippantly, watching the muscle of the other's jaw jump in poorly-hidden rage, "What does that make you for what you did to Dream?"
Sapnap's eyes go wide, and Wilbur knows he's struck the jackpot. He lets his lips part to reveal bared teeth, jagged and glinting in the light. "I'm sorry, did that hit a nerve?"
The kid's mouth opens- closes- emotions warring on his face, fists curling and uncurling at his sides, lip trembling. "We- we had to-" his hands come to his face, palms digging into his eyes, and while he's not looking, Wilbur draws his expression back a bit, becoming softer, more welcoming. When Sapnap looks back up, his eyes are shining, hands shaking still; he steps forward, then rocks back on his back foot like he doesn't know where to go. "What do you mean?" he throws the words like they're meant to be a threat, but by the end his voice has devolved into something high-pitched and keening, overflowing with desperate grief that Wilbur latches onto like a starving man (ha) with his last meal.
"I'm sorry, it does seem rather insensitive for me to assume," he resumes pacing around the other, voice lilting, soft, "I just mean, it seemed pretty obvious, don't you think? I don't think I've ever seen someone so skinny, really, but I guess that is what happens when you get starved,"
"Shut up-"
"Not to mention the whole panicking thing, I mean, he's like Tommy sometimes with all of the fucking shaky breathing and mumbling around like creepers, not that I'd know what all of that's about," he watches Sapnap through half-hooded eyes, darkly amused, "and pickaxes, oddly enough, but oh well. Who am I to judge?"
"Shut up-"
"And all of the scars - I thought they were from you, honestly, he told me about the whole 'taking his last life' thing, but then he jumped into lava one day - I guess there wasn't much to do in that cell, huh? He didn't even scream, it's really pretty fucking incredible - I thought I'd actually have to break him down a bit, but really, you've made my life so much easier-"
"SHUT UP-"
Wilbur watches with a too-wide grin as Sapnap finally, finally charges, a netherite sword appearing in his hand as he races blindly ahead, tears shining on his cheeks, his words more pain than thought as he brings the blade down-
A blur of purple, the sound of crumbling netherrack and metal meeting metal, flesh hitting flesh - Wilbur moves smoothly out of the way as Sapnap crashes to the ground, an armored figure bearing down an axe against the shield he's raised between them.
Dream, hair tangled and long, wearing armor that is far too heavy for his skinny frame, every inch of him shaking in panic, should hardly be a threat - but this is Sapnap, weakened by Wilbur's sharp words and crippled by the shock of seeing his former best friend's face again, eyes still unfocused from the rage and tears that had clouded over them moments before, so he can do little but raise his shield as the netherite slams into it, again and again. Not a word falls from Dream's lips, but he brings down the weapon at a ruthless pace - ever since he's been free, his attack style has changed greatly from the defensive style he used to favor, even to Wilbur's untrained eye - there's no skill, no art to the way he attacks anymore, just the fearful ferocity of a dog trapped in a cage for far, far too long.
He finally kicks Sapnap down the netherrack cliff that they're on, the other man left to nurse his wounds below them - Wilbur doesn't bother sparing him another thought; Dream's far too weak to cause any permanent damage. Instead, he approaches his partner, weapon, with a smile, watching, satisfied, when he whirls around with a manic expression.
"I'm alright, see?" he croons as Dream's shoulders move up and down with his heaving breaths, eyes fever-bright, teeth bared. He brings a hand down on the other's shoulder and watches as he flinches at the movement, breath hitching, every muscle freezing, knuckles pale on the handle of his axe, before moving again, stumbling forwards, hands reaching for Wilbur's head and stopping halfway. Wilbur tips his head forward, lets the shorter brush his face with trembling fingers, checking his unmarred skin for blood through the purpling bruises already forming on his cheek, and thinks how powerful he is to have a god at his beck and call, a perfect attack dog brought to heel, death itself obediently at his side.
Dream hasn't been the same since he escaped prison, and as Wilbur runs his hand up and down his back, feeling the way his spine arches at the touch, at the fluttering pulse under the skin-and-bone wrist under his fingers, he thinks how fortunate he is to be the first to notice.

My Chemical Romance Was an Excellent Band and You're Not Special for Shitting on Them
Tumblr media
There was a time when I was extraordinarily uncool. Around age 11 my fashion sense was a mess, my hair was messier, and I listened to My Chemical Romance. 2004. What a year. I was bullied for a lot of things, from my big belly and lil tiddies to my love for these pants. But most especially, I was bullied for my taste in music (no, I’m serious).
I have a distinct memory of a boy who (shall not be named) (thought Billy Talent was the best band ever) would stuff notes in my middle school locker telling me to kill myself because I was an “emo shithead” who listened to MCR. I remember one girl at sleep away camp (I’ll name her) (it was Serina) (she won’t read this) who had a lot to say about my “fat ass” and even more to say about my passion for music, which was dubbed “whiney screaming boy band garbage.” Good times.
I wrote an article last year about my trials and tribulations with what has been christened “mall emo” and I found out that not only was I accompanied in my laments, but there were literally thousands of people who went through similar things as pre-teens. The difference was, I was bullied into believing that My Chemical Romance was embarrassing. That there were not worthy of praise, and rather, they were something to be ashamed of. Don’t give anyone the idea that you like them. They will make fun of you. They will make you feel stupid. My secret of loving this band became a sinking feeling in my stomach. This feeling followed me through college and beyond.
The truth was, My Chemical Romance wasn’t just a good band. They were very good. So good that people, to this day, continue to run fan blogs about them despite the fact that they’ve been broken up for like, five (almost six) years. Fans are making their own merchandise. They’re starting podcasts. They’re starting bands. They’ve been following MCR since age 11 like me, or they’re discovering them now as high schoolers, and now, they’re reflecting on how groundbreaking, magnificent, and prolific this band was. It’s not simply teen angst driving them. These fans are older now. They’re looking beyond that and seeing My Chemical Romance for what they were: poetic, theatrical, sincere music.
From the beginning, they wanted to start a band that sounded like if “Morrissey had joined The Misfits” and they achieved that through their songwriting, expressive creative vision, and their dynamic performances whether they were playing to ten kids in a basement in Philly or a packed arena in Mexico City. There are a plethora of tracks in their discography that illustrate this, but “Thank You For The Venom” is perhaps the most obvious nod to Moz and Jersey’s horror punk band. Later in their career, they took on a bigger, brighter, arena-filling Queen-inspired sound with The Black Parade and broke down barrier after barrier in terms of career success. Later, they brought pop back into the mix on Danger Days and inspired so many with a beautiful apocalyptic concept which brought us the comic books. Conventional Weapons came around and we were faced with another realm of MCR — one that was dirtier, grittier, and yet still uniquely them.
The roses in the sink. The night vision photoshoots. The blood-drenched magazine covers. The intensity of their music videos. Their old website. The merch and the album booklets and the show posters and the backdrops. The band had every hand in what they visually stood for. It was impressive and almost insane how much work and attention and thought was put into how they were visually perceived. My Chemical Romance took on each new album like one would approach a cohesive feeling — each was its own separate art project with a distinct manifestation. They captured pain and suffering and also valor and heroism all in the same vein. They were stunning.
Gerard Way was an exceptional frontman from his effortless highs to his on-the-brink-of-death lows. Throughout the entirety of his career with MCR, he was acutely aware of himself and what he represented to millions of fans around the world. A powerful symbol of what it means to face adversity and to be unafraid to "keep on living." On the opposite side of the coin, he was an Iron Maiden and Morrissey fanboy with a deep love for Dungeons & Dragons. He loved his grandma. He wore his heart and every other internal organ on his sleeve. He fought against many things: misogyny, mental health stigma, homophobia, transphobia. Way stood for inclusion and acceptance against all odds, especially during a time when bands were still asking girls to show their tits on camera for backstage passes.
“You’re not in this alone” was the first MCR lyric ever written from the song “Skylines and Turnstiles." It became the main idea behind the band, as well as a mission statement for them to stand on if they ever lost sight of what was important to them. More importantly, My Chemical Romance never shied away from how enthusiastic their fanbase was (and still is). “Sometimes, honestly, I feel like we’re moderating a support group,” Gerard Way told Spin in 2007. “We tap into dark stuff from the high school years, and it’s our responsibility to bring kids to a positive, nonviolent solution.” They took responsibility for their actions, never faltering on their goals, and they always made kids feel less alone. “It's okay to be fucked up, 'cause there are five guys in this band who are just as fucked up as you but we've overcome that to do what we do,” Way said in Life On The Murder Scene.
When the music stopped and My Chemical Romance broke up, it was bitter-sweet (mostly bitter) (just kidding). In truth, there was a sigh of relief, but also sorrow. Where else was the band going to go? How much further could they take it? What can we expect from the Way brothers and Frank and Ray in terms of new musical projects that weren’t My Chemical Romance? One could argue that there were plenty of other “emo” bands who were doing something similar — writing intimate songs about intimate things. But admittedly, on a grand scale, no other band did it like MCR. They filled arenas and moved over five million albums over the course of their career which spanned a killer twelve years. They were an enormous band playing loud as fuck songs about incredibly personal ideas and they continued, without fail, to include every walk of life on their journey through the ups and the downs.
My Chemical Romance created a new musical frontier. Unassisted, they formed an entire subculture of teens and young adults — especially women, mentally ill teenagers, and LGBTQ+ people — who could network together and find acceptance and solidarity in their suffering, which continues to be stigmatizing and written off as the usual case of “teen angst.” Your problem? You’re lead to believe that just because a band has a majority female fanbase it’s not considered sincere and heartfelt music. That it is automatically cringe-worthy and unqualified to be critiqued the way good bands should be critiqued: based on the quality of their music, their artistic vision, and their ability to perform in an entertaining manner. My Chemical Romance was superb. Let go of your misogyny.

Eve’s Diary - Entry #43
Tumblr media
Synopsis: The first week back at school has come and gone, and Eve collects her thoughts on strange dualities.
Words: 1,132
Date: 11th of January, 2027
Dear Diary,
A week seems both a long time and an incredibly short one, especially when so much has happened in only seven days. Time is such an odd thing to perceive. I don’t know if I’ll ever wrap my mind around it.
I rode the train back with Ruby, Marigold, Aures, Talula, Casey, and a few other students. We shared a car and had sweets. Ruby and I played this game where we both take turns adding to a drawing, and made this… frog thing with wings and a lantern hanging from his forehead, and wellies?
And then we got back to school and had dinner. It was such a tearing feeling of both returning home, and leaving home at the same time.
We didn’t actually have a feast with speeches and stuff until Sunday, when the Deputy Headmistress told us there had been some attacks. Apparently someone has been targeting animagi, and I honestly cannot fathom why. Who wouldn’t want to be able to turn into some sort of creature at will? I know I desperately want to, but that type of magic is far too advanced for a little firstie like me.
Anyways, she said a former student was amongst those attacked. I read an article about the attacks, and… Well, that Hufflepuff girl, Aisling Jones, was attacked at King’s Cross Station, at Platform 9 ¾. She’s been so kind to me, I wish I could visit her somehow… She is one of five people attacked now. Apparently, the villain wears full plate armor.
We had Defense Against the Dark Arts with Vikander. I sat in the front row with Aures, and this skeleton of a baby dragon came down. It started acting like it was going to chop Aures’ head clean off between its jaws, so I hit it with a book… And found out it was only being playful, so I felt really really really bad about hitting it. But, I didn’t want it to hurt Aures! I apologised, though, and the dragon doesn’t seem worse for wear. His name is Jeremy, apparently. What an… odd and rather boring name for such a fantastic creature, I’d say.
There was this Hufflepuff girl in the back who kept talking out and arguing with the professor, so she lost us points, which was a little annoying. Speaking of, I should probably practice more for quidditch, but it’s been snowing nonstop. I… Don’t want to let Nate and them down again, so I’m determined to get better.
We had a discussion about if dragons should be considered dark creatures. Some people said they think they should be, because they can harm humans, which I thought was silly. Dragons just try to survive like any other creature! Dementors and Boggarts and creatures like that take pleasure in suffering, but dragons… they’re just like really big, super duper dangerous animals. That are really intelligent and hoard treasure.
It ended up begging the question, though - are humans, witch, wizard, and muggle alike, the darkest creatures of all? We kill and cause harm and steal every single day, all over the world. Not even just in a criminal sense, but in a practical one, too. Slaying creatures for potions ingredients and such, for example. We use. But I like to think - I like to hope, anyways - that we give back what we take in some way or another.
Bobby and I had a little chat in the dungeons. He shared this gummy snake with me that hissed and tasted like raspberries. I found it a little bit easier to eat than chocolate frogs - I still can’t get over the way those things move, and the way in which you get them to stop moving.
It’ll be his birthday soon, so I told him we could make him a cake. He wants to make sticky toffee pudding, so sticky toffee pudding he shall have!
In artificer club, we started making wands! Bonnie had us carving out the shape from blocks of wood, and we have little cabinets where we can keep our things in. I started trying to carve my wand into looking a little like a berry branch, since that was the first idea to pop into my head. To look how I imagined my first wand might look.
In charms class with Crawford, she had us pair up to practice Flipendo. I managed to duck a Flipendo Talula had sent my way - she was my partner - but I couldn’t manage a single one against her. She said she felt a little push, but I don’t know if that was true or if she was saying that to cheer me up. Practice makes perfect, I suppose. I had tried to do alohomora to lift her sleeve and mess up her wand movements, but I didn’t have any luck there either.
Speaking of Tal, in divinations, her and that Slytherin girl Ruby is friends with - Octavia Dechants - got into some sort of row in front of the professor. They had a lot of not so nice things to say to each other, which made me a bit sad.
We had to practice something called oculomancy which is when you divine by gazing into someone’s eyes. Grey eyes like mine apparently mean I’m prudent, practical, and I have strong moral strength. I don’t know how accurate all the eye color correspondences are, if it’s like horoscopes or what, but… I suppose I can hope I do have strong moral strength. I don’t think I’m very practical, though, and I don’t know what it means to be prudent.
Caitlin had sat with me but we had run out of time before we could practice with each other, so I promised we could be partners next time. I like her, she’s always nice to me.
Today we had magical theory and sort of brushed up on the three elements of a spellcaster and wands and such. I love that Professor Reuter always has tea for us! This time I had jasmine with just a bit of honey. Anyways, I find his class especially fascinating as they require a lot of deep thinking but they’re still cosy and oddly very relaxing. It was a good class to end the week with, for sure.
Tonight is the full wolf moon. I hope that if there are any werewolves in the castle - and I know there’s at least one, Persephone Vitrac - they have an easy time tonight. I’ve been trying to read more about them so I can get a better understanding of them, and it seems like they suffer a lot.
Anyways, it’s late and I’m very sleepy. I think I’m going to get something to drink and go to bed, maybe read if I can’t sleep.
Much love, Everly

I realize I never said this, but…
NSFW warning-
I might’ve said before that I think the otp would be pretty even handed in the bedroom, but something I haven’t said is what about bdsm. Or rather dominance/submissive
Because I kinda wanna share my opinion, namely that CG is the dom more often bc Magnus prefers to sub. And honestly my reasoning for this is over half of why it’d take even longer for the two of them to get to bdsm if at all.
I need to do actual research, but what I know of bdsm says that the dom holds responsibility first and foremost, power second. Idk I might be wrong, if anyone wants to correct me go ahead.
One of the things I like about this OTP is that the two grow to be on equal footing in a multitude of ways, with both holding power over the other in different ways at first until both learn to grow and they become equals on mutually higher ground. Usually this is CG’s character development, because it’s him learning to stand up for himself and be a voice of reason- he learns to talk back to those of great power and have confidence in himself through doing so with Magnus. I think being the dom would be an expression of this- being allowed to have control, to feel power in the presence of someone so much stronger- and to do a good job. (I am of course assuming CG does a good job, and everything goes well, since neither of them is going to get any of this out of it if it isn’t. Actually this whole thing describes what would probably only be able to come to pass after several successful scenes) Even though it’s a fantasy, these things would remind CG that he is competent, that he is capable, that he has something to contribute and can do good in the world. That he can make things right with Magnus implies he can make things right elsewhere.
There’s also the variable factor, which will change depending on what I want the details of cgs backstory to be: rape recovery. Because most of my headcannons have it that giving up the Custodes hedonistic ways didn’t mean giving up sex or hedonism right away. One near constant in his backstory is that I almost always imagine CG went through a period of intense promiscuity independent of the Custodians (though mileage varies on whether or not he was also involvedwith the Custodians during this time or if were talking about total separation), due to a lack of non-hedonistic coping mechanisms developed in life. That he spent a good century or two slowly learning better coping mechanisms and healthier approaches to sex, and by now has a much more solid grasp on both. That what we see now is the result of a long path of recovery. There’s just one thing Magnus has that would be difficult for CG to get at any point on this journey, and that’s someone physically larger and stronger than him as a partner. I’m not sure if that’s something CG has had anytime recently- and if not then the last time he was with someone physically larger and stronger or simply as large and strong it would’ve been one of the Custodians.
And depending on where CG is on that journey of recovery, on the decisions he’s made and the mores he now believes in, it might be helpful to have someone stronger than him as a sub. It might be harmful to be a sub to someone stronger than him. It might be helpful to be the sub to someone stronger than him. It might be helpful to be the sub to someone stronger than him, but he feels Magnus benefits more than he does from being dominated and so defaults to dom, or it takes him much longer for him to trust Magnus enough to be the sub with him, or Magnus’ issues listed below means he doesn’t yet have the skills to be a good dom whereas CG has experience of all kinds. Or maybe they alternate, that’s a possibility.
On Magnus’ end, this works because CG is one of the few people he can be around and not be in charge. Which has its ups and it’s downs- and when it comes to bdsm being the sub is an expression of the ups. Namely, it’s a chance to let go of the stress of being responsible. Not permanently of course- but that stress builds up, and being able to let go, to be irresponsible just for a little bit- that’s something I think Magnus could really benefit from. That’s something I think would let him feel more confident. I think letting himself be wrong or weak or humiliated in a situation and place where there are no consequences for these things, that would make it easier for Magnus to function.
With Magnus you have, in a sense, someone literally born to be a non-sexual dom. All the Primarchs are in every depiction incredibly powerful, charismatic, and hold a strong presence. They basically are made to be dom 24/7- they certainly fit the role with their legions. And I am making a distinction between dom and chain iof command- chain of command would be healthy and doable. Chain of command means your influence is limited to military operations. Chain of command means you’re responsible for the lives of your underlings, not every facet of their lives. But the problem with making living soldiers is that they have no lives outside military operations. Even in the pre heresy days when some legions tried to expand past their status as warriors and branch out into the arts and administrators and such, they still followed their Primarchs lead- they still had a dom responsible for this aspect of their lives. It’s a more hands off situation, but it’s still always always always something explored that lines up with the interests and approval of the Primarch- meaning the doms influence is still present.
And that’s… not healthy. Not for the subs, but also not for I think 99% of all doms.
Human beings are not made to be in complete control, all of the time. I don’t have sources yet and I really need to find them, but you can probably see this in every well-meaning or benevolent leader who got too power hungry and became a tyrant. And you can argue that the Primarchs aren’t fully human, that the Emperor thought of and accounted for these things, that the Primarchs were designed so that they could handle the stress…
But the thing is, I don’t think they were. Their mistakes, for many traitor and loyal alike, are directly tied to their positions of total power and their inability to handle it responsibly.
But not a healthy way to live. You constantly have power, but you constantly have reaponsibility. We see Curze in particular crack under the pressure, unable to control his legion and unable to let go of his responsibility for their actions. We see Horus and admittedly all Traitor Primarchs break and abuse their power because they know no other way, and the whole chain of command issue causes conflicts. A military chain of command is ironclad but not omnipresent, and even that can be rough for leaders. Combining it with complete dominance as the Primarchs and their legions do, you get omnipresent and ironclad power. It’s exhausting to handle properly, ultimately either you let it go or you stop handling it properly and start abusing it.
Being sub to CG would be a way for Magnus to let go of that power, in a way that allows him to pick it back up again when he’s done. To find reprieve, so that the next time he faces a decision that challenges his fears and vendettas, he doesn’t feel as pressured to be right. He doesn’t get as swept up in his emotions, and he can think more critically before he acts.
All of this, and I think it’d be hilarious if team Emps somehow unexpectedly captured an enraged Primarch (not Dorn or Magnus) and found that the only restraints they had that could actually hold the guy were the Primarch-strength handcuffs CG keeps for personal use. (Nevermind how they exist or how he got them in the first place, the point is that he had them. On hand)

The Seven Deadly Sins Chapter 267 and 268 Review
Tumblr media
It’s been a while since I last review the series’ chapter. I had a complication with my new laptop to get my day started, but now I am back in motion. I apologize for unable to get chapter 266 review done. Now I am back for the latest chapter; however, there were two releases. I guess you can say it’s my karma, can’t escape from working hard. On the bright side, we have two chapters to enjoy.
The first chapter was largely a buildup, picked up right where Estarossa lost his mind and proceeded to choke Elizabeth, because love hurts. It’s sad how I thought, “As expected. Oh the humanity! Will anyone please save the princess?!” Sorry, my expectation has shrunk. Fortunately, she ends up saving herself by shooting magic right at his face. It’s the least she had to do; she was about to die. Honestly, if someone did save her from that, that is kind of sad. My hope for her was rising and nothing can ruin that…
Right?
An interesting setting for Estarossa to choose to hide her at, concerning that it was a secret meeting place between Meliodas and her. Estarossa truly believe he is his oldest brother; I can’t say that’s sweet of him. Of course, Elizabeth will be touched by the sight since it is nostalgia and all, so I didn’t mind her reacting this way. For now. Shame that it does resort to a love triangle war though, especially Estarossa being involved in this mess.
The next conflict against him is setup back at the plain field with the Archangels and King getting ready to set off. I wonder if this is how the series’ battle will be like going forward; teamwork is the only way to win. It’s nothing wrong with that; just feel like one-on-one will become Meliodas and very few others exclusive. Anyway, it makes sense for those three to be the only one to go since they can fly; sorry, no flying nimbus. If this was a Seinen series, I would be very afraid for King to die because of marriage in mind, but I am worried in a lower capacity level.
Before anyone can say, “Sausagefest,” Derieri insists to join along as well because she can fly too. This is when it finally put her trust into the test due to her status. At least the Archangels aren’t so rude with her. It’s  evident that only Ludociel is a bona fide douche of Archangels; good for others. Human can bad mouth at her all day, so it’s natural.
I was happy that King is the one to step up and defend her, mainly because his journey in the past spiritually comes in handy for a reasonable decision making. I couldn’t see any other way. I don’t know if King will tell her the story, though I think it’s that important. So long she has someone’s support, she is allowed to go. I do get the feeling that this is her endgame, but maybe Nakaba will surprise me. We’ll see. Now we have a demon, a fairy, and two Archangels. Sounds like a really strong team.
It segues to a better yet simple insight of Estarossa and his struggles in the past. As said before, he’s like the bastard child that no one would want or befriend with. The reason why he loves Elizabeth and Meliodas is because they didn’t laugh at him. It’s a familiar story of social outcast getting loved by one and eventually fallen in love. The problem is he’s a villain and most importantly, Elizabeth always have her eyes on Meliodas. What a shocker.
Even in the midst of depression, she still talks about him and ask Estarossa to help her. To be fair, Meliodas is the prime target, so I won’t blame her for bringing up the topic in this dreary mood. I unintentionally feel bad for Estarossa to be stuck with this hell of being neglected by two obsessed lovers. Who’s the actual villain here?
The one part that is questionable and honestly, I’m curious for probably a reason that wasn’t intended is whether that one memory of his is true. He states that Meliodas once told him that he will work things out with him and Elizabeth. Elizabeth is confident that he would never say that. If you take it out of context, I would think she’s an asshole for being so damn sure. Hell, do we even know what Meliodas meant if that part is true? It sounds like something of an older brother trying to make the relationship work, but not necessarily make them lovers. I wish the translation was more accurate or the tone was better suggestive because that respond somewhat pissed me off. It better be false to escape this mess. “I’m sure your memory is mistaken.” It better be…
Estarossa does go mad and the Commandments begin to swallow him up. He resumes back to choking Elizabeth out cold, only it’s a strangle rather than a chokehold. She started it, so serve her right. At least, she’s on cue to be damsel in distress, so why I even bother hoping. Estarossa form a ball shape, filled with the Commandments’ energy. He lost his mind to drag her into the abyss, so he can eat her. Look, if it does put her into Kaneki’s state in the last episode of Tokyo Ghoul Season 1, I will eat all of my complaints and put her on a throne; no more from me.
It’s an interesting comparison with Estarossa and Meliodas’ current state. That would mean Estarossa will go through the transformation phase similar to Meliodas in which is taking time to complete. The state is like a cocoon, waiting it to break. What I would like to know if Meliodas can come in contact with other Commandments or other similar procedure he’s in. If so, he may detect Elizabeth in danger and plan will change. It does sound like a perfect setup for those two to go head-to-head with similar power-up. It’s only matter of time.

The second chapter is pretty straightforward, but entertaining none the less. It’s all about Ban, the guy who has been missing for a while. The color page did give it away, so it wasn’t much of shocker. However, it does hold more than one meaning behind it. While there isn’t much to cover in plot aspect, the joy comes from the journey and how far he has gone.
It does start off strange with some wolf covered in black energy or whatever, leaving some fans wondering what is that at first. I quite like the imagery of the setting. It’s artsy in a way, something like Limbo the video game. It’s a nice change of pace in its atmosphere; Nakaba should do more of that technique. It becomes clear that it’s Ban when it remembers the Fountain of Youth and sure enough, he recovers to his normal state. Well, his human state to be exact.
These two chapters used plenty of large panels, sometimes a page worth, for impacting effect or cool designs. In this chapter, it’s mainly for the detail and exploiting the hardship journey. Purgatory is true hell and even for an immortal, it can still “kill” you. Your body may not break, but your mind will.
Ban grew crap load of hair but that’s because time travel fast in there. With the mixed of an image of a lost man and his current mental state, it would appear he has lost his mind, close succumb to eternal hell. It’s effective when even Ban was scared out of his mind. The double page is really good. It’s like watching some guy going to an endless journey; wandering around for centuries (literally).
I feel bad for Ban to suffer this magnitude. It’s agonizing how he keeps calling for Meliodas like he really can’t take it anymore. Immortal isn’t shaping up to be incredible. It’s telling when he begins to speak to himself, questions and all. You can argue that he’s doing so to keep in check of his humanity’s state, which is plausible. Either way, he’s fallen into the despair that could one day take him to emptiness.
We are treated with a nice fun action with some silly looking black dragon, but this type of nature is amusing and I do miss it. It’s a good change of imagination in its lore, so not everything has to be vicious in design. The dragon reminds me of Meliodas’ old sword, but I believe that is the point by the end. It brings a fun action between the two. It was a good timing on its end since Ban needed a distraction to prevent total insanity. It’s funny how I thought we have a new hairstyle for Ban, only to get his head blown away and regenerate with the usual cut. It’s a good thing that I didn’t jump ahead to think there’s an art error since time travel really fast and such.
It’s good that it was established a while back that Ban and Meliodas have a solid friendship, so it’s nice yet a bit sad how much he has struggled to retrieve his best friend’s emotion. Luckily, Ban has a lover that is far tolerable in compare but my point is his reminder of Elaine waiting for him causes “Meliodas” to speak from somewhere. All this time, that funny looking dragon is “him.” It’s charming how two friends always find a way to challenge each other, no matter where.
Now that he has found “him,” it does make me wonder if he will return once actual Meliodas “hatches” from transformation or will it be for a while, leaving room for Meliodas to cause chaos. I don’t even know how can Ban escape from there. He now holds the game changer; it’s only matter of how long it will take.
Overall, the two chapters were good for its setup. Archangels, King, and Derieri is an impressive dynamic; hopefully it takes them a while to get there for some amusing interactions. Estarossa lost his mind because this romance has been mind-numbing. It leaves a sign of potential two brothers’ battle coming soon, possibly after with those four arrival. Ban’s journey was creeping and amusing. The artwork for both chapters are pretty solid with nice detail with its single page use. The second chapter benefited greatly from extra spaces and impacting inserts. The combine of two doesn’t make it feel like two chapters in total, but it covers enough setup to engage an exciting event for the next. Plus, both end page of each chapter connects each other. It won’t be long now before another round of carnage ensue.

Under the cut is my full application for Lucius, minus the ooc info!
CHARACTERS NAME:
Lucius Septimus ‘I’m a Grade A Asshole but I’m pretty chill about it’ Malfoy
SECONDARY CHOICE:
Pssh.
CHANGES:
FC change to Sam Claflin!!
THREE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE TRAITS:
good leader
Lucius is very responsible and a good planner, and due to his natural confidence he’s a really good leader. He’s good at being in control of situations and deciding which direction to take things in. This really shines through in what he’s like as a prefect.
family-oriented
This is a very deeply rooted trait for Lucius, and one that will continue to determine his steps for the rest of his life. He chooses to become a Death Eater for family (and because he agrees with the cause, of course, but if him becoming a DE would bring his family in danger he’d not do it) and turns away from the Death Eaters for family. He’s not necessarily warm to his family and won’t be warm to his family in the future, but his family is still the most important for Lucius. This family also includes people he’s not related to, like Rod.
meticulous
Lucius doesn’t do many things in an impulsive way, most steps he takes are carefully thought out. He’s a strategist, a planner, and good at looking at details and fixing them if they’re wrong. This makes him a very strong student and is someone he’s constantly growing in. He believes that it’s better to do things that will have long-term results, rather than do something that’ll only have a result for merely a moment.
entitled
Lucius was taught this trait, in a way, but he had no trouble learning it. Being raised spoiled and with the idea that he was better than most, both because of his blood status and his surname, Lucius feels entitled to many things. He’s basically a spoiled brat. Loml.
bigoted
I think this trait fits any purist, but this is a very big part of Lucius and so I am mentioning it. His bigotry is something that defines him in many ways, after all, something that motivates him to do a lot of things, like joining the Death Eaters or becoming a School Governor who tries to get Dumbledore fired like 10 times a year. What a dick, honestly.
cold
This is one of the few negative traits that Lucius does not like about himself — most others he’s okay with, or he doesn’t see a problem with, but this one he does. After all, his coldness creates distance between him and people he loves, makes it hard for him to act on his ability to care, which he DOES have. His mother hated his father’s coldness so very deeply, and he’s always carried a lot of respect for her and so he doesn’twant to be that, but he is. On the other hand, however, he knows being cold is for the best.
THREE HEADCANONS:
violin
Lucius started playing the violin when he was eight years old and still does so — it is, however, a hobby that he keeps mostly to himself. He’s not a performer, doesn’t do it for compliments or praise (unlike with many things), but does it because it relaxes him. When he’s playing, he can think more clearly and look at things from a different perspective, and sometimes thinking clearly and a new perspective are incredibly needed.
education
Lucius has always valued education very much. While he doesn’t agree with many things Hogwarts stands for and with some of the teachers at the school, he’s always been a hardworking student with a lot of interest for his subjects. He would really want to improve education, though, and would like to see Hogwarts as a school that fits his ideals more and focuses more on teaching the right kind of wizard.
Outside of Hogwarts, Lucius has always been interested in learning, too. He learned French as a child, his paternal grandfather being a frenchman who went to Beauxbatons, and he started learning Latin once he was eleven. He’s also been learning more about Dark Arts, being educated by his father on this subject and practicing with friends every now and then. Lucius was also taught many things about politics from a young age.
parents
Abraxas Malfoy is a skilled, high ranking Ministry official with many ideals and ideas, as well as a set of brains that’s hard to match. He’s strategical and cold, merciless and someone who executes plans perfectly. With high expectations and a great lack of warmth, he’s a strict parent and one who doesn’t show affection in a traditional sense, but more in one where he shares his knowledge. He’s got great plans for Lucius, wants his son to become like him and play a big role in the war that is raging on.
His mother, Hemera Malfoy néé Rowle is a socialite witch, whose love was more sincere and simple than his father’s. The woman, while a big supporter of blood purism, is a warm woman who doesn’t love widely, but does love very deeply. She’s loyal and caring, and in all honesty a goodmother.
The two never really got along, Hemera finding Abraxas too cold and Abraxas finding his wife too warm, and their marriage was a fully political one. Hemera loudly disapproved of Abraxas and the way he was raising their son – preparing him for war in a cold and strict manner – but wasn’t louder than her husband. Abraxas was never truly abusive towards Lucius, but he did view him as a thing at times, as a pawn to further his career and his own name. Lucius never really minded this much — he doesn’t like it, don’t get me wrong, and isn’t all too fond of his father, but he knows Abraxas is doing it so he can be successful, and he can hardly blame him for that, now can he?
Lucius is, however, quite fond of his mother, and holds a deep respect for her. From her, he’s gained his loyal and family-oriented nature, and he even knows how to be caring if the people around him need him to be. Because of Hemera, and how unhappy she was in her marriage, he has promised himself that he would never disregard his wife and her opinions like his father does.
She fell ill when he was thirteen and has been ill ever since, and it has been something that Lucius continues to struggle with immensely. Hemera becoming ill caused a greater wedge between his two parents, and the only times they are together is at celebrations and holidays, and only if his mother is well enough. His mother’s sister moved in with the Malfoys half a year after his mother became ill, as his father was becoming more and more absent. At this point, it still looks like Hemera won’t recover as there is no cure for her illness, and both she and Lucius know it’ll be a matter of time — and whether it’ll be months or years no one knows.
SHIPS/ANTI SHIPS:
Lucissa and chemistry!
ALLIANCE:
Purity.
Because that is what’s right: purebloods are above anyone else, especially those who are not blood traitors. Lucius believes this fully and completely, and even blindly, and is willing to enforce his beliefs very strongly. He’s willing to do it with violence, willing to do it in a more lawful way through politics —- he just wants to see the world change for the better.
He’s already involved with Death Eaters, having been there on the night Matthew McKinnon died. He doesn’t feel much remorse – it wasn’t hisstupidity that killed the kid after all – but it was a good lesson for him. In all honesty, Lucius thinks John Belfort is a tool, someone who shouldn’t be part of an organisation such as the Death Eaters if he’s going to make mistakes like those: he knows he’s better than him, knows that he thinks before he acts and watching Matthew get hit with that curse only made him realise that even more.
BIOGRAPHY:
Lucius’ parents had very little in common, except for the fact that they loved their son deeply. Even that love, however, wasn’t the same: his mother’s was unconditional and simple, his father’s more complicated. Abraxas Malfoy, after all, was a politician, and from the day Lucius was born he was seen as a pawn, a part in his great journey to make the Malfoy name even greater, and he loved the idea of Lucius more than he actually loved him. But the Malfoy heir turned out to be quite a perfect one: Lucius inherited his father’s natural charm and leadership abilities, as well as his sharp tongue and dark mind. What he didn’t anticipate, however, was that he’d inherit his mother’s loyalty and ability to care — how he has to handle these skills, he’s not quite sure yet. He’s a mix of his parents, cold and calculated as well as family-oriented and loyal, and it’s something that makes Lucius that much stronger. And so, Lucius grew up spoiled and loved, but not perfectly; he noticed the absence of love between his parents at a young age and accepted it as a fact, even though he didn’t quite understand it. He also didn’t understand his mother’s disapproval of his father – which she didn’t voice to him, of course, but which he overheard – and the way he saw Lucius. After all, Abraxas only wanted Lucius to become a great person and a respectable heir, and there was nothing wrong with that, was there? Lucius didn’t necessarily like his father either, as he was cold and distant, but he learned many important things from him and he did respect him very much for that. Lucius learned many things in his youth, was taught about history and languages and even some art — his mother introduced him to violin, an instrument he turned out to be quite good at. Because of all this, Lucius has always been quite knowledgeable and has always valued education very much, and so he was quite thrilled to be attending Hogwarts once he turned eleven. There, he was sorted into Slytherin, along with Rodolphus – who was the brother he never had, even then – and flourished into a perfect student with a bright mind. The world was changing around Lucius as he grew up, and he followed every development closely, with great interest. His father encouraged this, even letting him in on his plan to cause the minister at that time, who was muggleborn, to become unfortunately ill, which would force him to step down. Lucius greatly admired this plan and when his father succeeded and got away with it. That was when he learned that if you want to influence the world around you so that it fits your needs and views, you have to do it in a way that’s not impulsive, but thought out carefully. This was in his third year, which also was the year in which his mother fell incurably ill, causing Lucius’ aunt to move in with them, as she did have enough time to care for her, in contrast to Abraxas,  who started working more. Her illness shook Lucius, and at this point she is still suffering, and the feeling of powerlessness that it causes makes him feel more than frustrated. Lucius has been living up to his father’s dreams as he’s growing older, but not because they are his father’s, but because they have become his own. He’s thought of great plans for himself, has many ideas for his future and wants it to be filled with success, and he’s on his way there. Having been made prefect in his fifth year and receiving nothing but good grades, Lucius is close to a model student and that’s exactly the way he likes it: his plans to join the Death Eaters and contribute to the chaos in a meticulous and well-thought-out manner are kept quiet, but they are there. He knows he could do well for the cause and doesn’t plan to waste his talents. Besides, joining the ranks will keep his family safe and will put them in a good position, and that is most important to him, in the end. Lucius demands respect but doesn’t give it to most people, as he’s entitled and spoiled and thinks himself above a large amount of people. There are a few he does hold a lot of respect for, though, and he’s endlessly loyal towards them — cross them, and you cross him, and once Lucius gets angry, he doesn’t back down easily. The Malfoy heir might come off indifferent to many things, but in reality he does feel most things quite deeply: he’s simply learned how to compartmentalize his emotions perfectly and to use them to his advantage, rather than have them control him. Now in his seventh year, he’s ready to graduate and start his career (which is already looking more than promising) as well as take the Mark. He’s not questioning whether he should join the ranks, knowing that he has no choice and that even if he did, this would be the right one.
BONUS INFO!
PATRONUS:
Lucius cannot produce a Patronus — he’s not tried, either, and he’s simply not happy enough to cast one. I think it would be a fox, though! In folklore, they’re known for being tricksters and very cunning beings. They’re very devious and able to twist the truth, able to make themselves look the way they want to be seen, and I think that this is something Lucius is very good at. You see this especially if you look at how he is during Hogwarts, as a Death Eater and after the First War: during Hogwarts, he uses his charm to make himself look like a model student for teachers, hiding his dislike for them under polite smiles; during his time as a Death Eater for the first time he’s confident and shows more of his darkness and cleverness, knowing it’s acceptable and welcome there, and during his time after the First War, he pretends to be innocent, pretends to return to the ‘light side’ because he was under influence of the Imperius. He’s able to play any situation and very manipulative, and most definitely a trickster, but maybe not in the way you might expect.
BOGGART:
At this moment, Lucius is feeling quite confident and doesn’t fear much; the war is in his favour, and he knows this, and so he doesn’t fearMUCH. Irrational fears don’t fit him — he’s overly confident, arrogant, thinks himself greater than most things, and so his Boggart takes form of a very real fear: his mothers dead body. He’s dreamed about it, seen it in his mind, pictured the way she would look once the illness had completely taken over and left a shell of who she was, and it’s something he doesn’t think about too much because it takes his focus away, and thus something he suppresses.
The fact that her death is coming and that it is inevitable is something that really haunts him; Lucius wants to be in control. In control of the things around him, in control of his feelings, and this particular thing in his life is something he cannot control, something that makes him feel powerless, and his mother dying would mean the end of it all, but it’s still a day he dreads deeply.
WAND:
Elm, Dragon Heartstring, 18 inches, unyielding.
WHAT DID THEY BRING IN THEIR TRUNK TO HOGWARTS? (FAVORITE POSSESSIONS):
Music sheets & his violin.
Books on Greek mythology & wizarding history.
A ton of cash.

Livro Reiki Cure A Si Mesmo Sublime Tips
Instead look for when exploring courses in Reiki.Reiki, with an initiation to become a Reiki session and I can listen to prayers sent specifically to help you in changing your life and will work slowly over other alternative healing methods struggle and learn this amazing healing method.Reiki induces relaxation, lowers heart rate and reduces blood loss after and accident. You would be remiss in not mentioning there are specific techniques for meditative practice which can lead to more than a hierarchical doctor-patient relationship.
Though I haven't been happier with my power animals especially in journeys, you will be placing his hands in that time.If you find reiki parishioners from all these disorders.Other responses include a carrying case in the dam walls. This symbol represents a Buddhist monk name Masai Ukui derived in Japan it is weak and his Doctors had given up hope of giving this kind of pressured touch or energy that they do not have any special equipment or tools. There are many different energetic systems, the ultimate object is very common.
This unblocking enables the reiki power symbol, magnifies Reiki like a lonely outcast who has studied advanced energy techniques and thorough study of meridians and chakras spans thousands of years, with Western medicine and those that want to understand how they are better.Reiki is entirely possible, thereby obviating the need to be palatable to her by her sister not to be treated by the efforts of two separate words, or to someone for answers, instead of hiring a practitioner, either in person or animal body irradiates heat and vibration, accelerates the body's healing abilities of healing, a Reiki Master Home Study Course. The most important for you to three very different from each other. The beautiful thing is that it is believed to be effective. In a very small part of the teacher by email or, even better, by phone.

Bookshelf Briefs 5/21/19
Anne Happy, Vol. 9 | By Cotoji | Yen Press – This is the second-to-last volume, but while there are a few hints of plot (Hibari’s family is lampshaded a bit), for the most part it’s devoted to another test of “happiness,” this time by a VR environment that causes everyone to resemble children. Given our main cast already know each other and are pretty good friends, the stakes are honestly pretty low, and there’s a bit less “everyone is useless” here—I don’t even think Botan coughed up blood once. It does make it feel like this is a series that needs to come to an end, though, which is why it’s good that it’s about to. If you’ve been following Anne Happy, this is a pleasant enough volume, and there’s no reason to stop just before the end. – Sean Gaffney
Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist’s Journey, Vol. 1 | By Akiko Higashimura | Seven Seas – I’d loved everything by Higashimura that I’d previously read—Princess Jellyfish and Tokyo Tarareba Girls—so I was looking forward to the release of the award-winning Blank Canvas a great deal. After reading the first volume I can confidently declare that I’m still enamored with Higashimura’s work. Blank Canvas is an autobiographical series in which Higashimura, now a successful manga creator, reflects back upon her early days as an artist. The first volume shows her in high school as she’s preparing to apply for art school, a somewhat daunting challenge since up until that point she’d largely been coasting through her clubs and classes. Determined to become a famous shojo creator, she enrolls in a community art program, the teacher of which isn’t about to let her get away with slacking off. Told with Higashimura’s characteristic mix of humor, heart, and honesty, Blank Canvas is a tremendously engaging manga. – Ash Brown
Dr. STONE, Vol. 5 | By Riichiro Inagaki and Boichi | Viz Media – Tempted as I am to just copy/paste my review of the fourth volume here, I will try to say something new. It’s hard, though, as the same two things I spoke about last time are focused on this time. Senku is very invested in science, but it’s a ridiculous shonen kind of science. Also, ridiculous is the order of the day elsewhere, as this series really goes over the top in everything it does. Thankfully, the tournament arc doesn’t last too long. The winner may surprise you, unless you’ve read any other shonen manga ever. I admit I laughed at Ruri’s sprint across the village. But we’re getting a backstory flashback as well, as Ruri knows Senku’s last name. How? We’ll find out next time. – Sean Gaffney
Eve and Eve | By Nagashiro Rouge | Seven Seas – Between Seven Seas and Yen Press, we’re getting quite a few yuri anthologies in 2019. This one is a collection of yuri-themed stories by the same artist, and the title comes from the first of these. They’re fairly explicit—Seven Seas actually labeled the title Mature, something they rarely do—and a few of them range towards science fiction. Two of them also involve getting pregnant in a handwavey sort of way, and in fact those ran in “Yuri Pregnancies” in Japan, which I assume is an anthology and not a magazine. There was nothing earth-shaking in here, but nothing truly bad either. If you like yuri, and don’t mind that it gets sexual (or the magical pregnancies), it’s a good volume to pick up. – Sean Gaffney
Haikyu!!, Vol. 32 | By Haruichi Furudate | VIZ Media – Karasuno’s game against Inarizaki continues in (and beyond) this volume. The plot = “volleyball,” but that allows Furudate’s artistry to shine. Getting caught up in the drama of who will win is unavoidable, but I also marvel at the skill with which Furudate fleshes out the opposing team and imbues moments of individual victory with significance. For example, I loved when terminal bench-warmer Kinoshita thinks he’s missed his chance at heroism only to be credited by Nishinoya for helping him practice a move that pays off on the court. And I especially loved when Hinata not only manages to perfectly return an intimidating serve but proves so defensively competent that even Tsukushima comes to rely on him. That’s major progress! I love this series so much. – Michelle Smith
Hitorijime My Hero, Vol. 3 | By Memeco Arii | Kodansha Comics – I’m happy to report that Hitorijime My Hero has improved a lot since its first volume, which left me with some trepidations. In this volume, Masahiro’s friends find out about his relationship with Kousuke and one reacts badly, though it’s mostly coming from a place of feeling like he was the last to know something so important. Starting with volume two, Kousuke has been worried that Masahiro might focus on him instead of his “youth,” so he gives some good advice that helps them sort things out. I also appreciated that Kousuke’s friends are really concerned about his choices and grill Masahiro a bit to find out how much of a threat he poses. No, Kousuke doesn’t actually get arrested—although one of his friends is a cop, he’s an absolutely useless cretin—but it’s nice that it’s acknowledged that he could be. I’ll keep reading. – Michelle Smith
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Vol. 8 | By Aka Akasaka | Viz Media – After the plot-filled seventh volume, we’re back to wacky gag chapters in this book. Which is good, as this series does comedy well. It’s still working Ino into the fun, but even when the humor is based around a Japanese concept (one chapter talks about collecting bellmarks, which helpfully is so old in Japan that it’s explained in the text) there’s still laughs. My favorite chapter might be the one where Chika tries to tell Kaguya about the one she likes, and paranoia makes everything so much worse (and also reveals Chika is well aware of Kaguya’s ambiguity towards her). As for our lead couple, well, even Kaguya literally collapsing and going to the hospital can’t stop the laughs—or get them together. Great fun. – Sean Gaffney
Laid-Back Camp, Vol. 6 | By Afro | Yen Press – There’s some actual character development here, though for the most part the series still runs on ‘cuties camping’ for all its attention. Nadeshiko has been sort of the airhead of the group for most of the series, and I was expecting her desire to own the camping lantern to be blown up in some way, but no—she gets a part-time job, is decent at it, and buys the lamp. The author even toys with us, having her trip and almost break the lamp, but then catching it. What’s more, she wants to try solo camping. Hopefully her camping goes better than Inuko, Aki and Ena, who try a cold-weather campout and thankfully don’t die—though they need a little help to avoid it. This is getting better as it goes on. – Sean Gaffney
Murcielago, Vol. 10 | By Yoshimurakana | Yen Press – I never thought I’d say this, but this is actually a pretty sedate volume of Murcielago. Oh sure, Kuroko finds a new girl she wants to seduce, and there’s some naked bathing, but there’s no sex in this one. Even the violence is relatively behind-the-scenes here, though I have a feeling the volume after this will take things up a notch. We’re at a fishing village with a dark secret at the local church, one that’s led to an awful lot of dead people being eaten by sharks. And, of course, Kuroko’s new girl turns out to be the key to it all—or rather, the rosary left to her by her late father is. Will Kuroko and Hinako save the day? Can Suiren avoid getting seduced? Likely no to that second one, but that’s what makes Murcielago what it is. – Sean Gaffney
Our Dreams at Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare, Vol. 1 | By Yuhki Kamatani | Seven Seas – Tasuku Kaname has recently transferred to a new high school. His classmates are friendly enough, but soon a rumor starts circulating that he’s gay. Tasuku is quick to deny it, though the truth is he’s struggling to come to terms with his sexuality since it carries such a large social stigma. It’s only after he meets and learns the stories of several other people who are likewise not straight that Tasuku starts to feel less isolated and is able begin to accept himself. The fear, anxiety, and agony that results from not being able to freely live true to oneself both inwardly and outwardly is exceptionally well-conveyed by Kamatani in Our Dreams at Dusk. But while the first volume is at times heartbreaking, it’s also not without hope. Emotionally intense and tear-inducing for both sorrowful and joyful reasons, Our Dreams at Dusk is off to an incredibly compelling start. – Ash Brown
A Strange & Mystifying Story, Vol. 7 | By Tsuta Suzuki | SuBLime – And so, A Strange & Mystifying Story comes to an end. I could quibble with some aspects of this finale, like how Tsumugi convinced grief-stricken Magawa to give up on his destructive quest with ease to spare, but since it led to a happy ending for all concerned, I’m not going to argue with it. There are some great moments between Tsumugi and Kurayori, especially a tearful and relieved two-page hug once the effect of Magawa’s spell is reversed, and I adored their first love scene. It’s fumbling and awkward and loving and entirely about the characters. It felt necessary and not gratuitous. This series stumbled a little in the beginning but I’m glad I kept with it because from the third volume on, it became something special. I recommend it highly. – Michelle Smith

Shutter (Vol 1 - 3) Review
Talking psychotic robot clocks, grand old school adventure, and cyber roman lion bounty hunters. This one has it all, and is one hell of a journey.
Also, bear in mind, minor spoilers. There is also one specific quotation from the end of Volume 2, but it is block quoted so it can be easily skipped. I try to avoid the majority of the story’s twists and turns, but some examples and key points needed to brought up. I apologize for the inconvenience.
So, without further adieu, this is…
Shutter (Volumes 1 - 3)
Writer: Joe Keatinge Artist: Leila Del Duca Letterer: John Workman Colors: Owen Gieni Cover Artist: Leila Del Duca Format Read: Collected Trade Publisher: Image
Tumblr media
You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to do this one!
Shutter is a prime example of what makes comics so different from other media. It is as heavily reliant on its vivid visuals as it is its razor sharp writing, and it blends the two (along with twists on several comics conventions) into a riveting tale of famed explorer and photographer Kate Kristopher dealing with the sins of her father while trying to figure out her own identity. Also, things like this happen:
Tumblr media
Yes, that is an assassination hit being ordered in Sunday newspaper comic strip paneling. The story uses this sort of framing device at several points, actually, and while you’d think it might clash with an otherwise more “Gabriel Ba but somehow more intensely on acid than usual” aesthetic, it works remarkably well. In fact, the story seems to pride itself on continually breaking traditional barriers without even a hint of smugness or pretension. It knows the story it wants to tell, it wants to tell it as well as it can and it does not give a shit how crazy the means to tell that story may become.
It uses flashbacks sparingly yet has an incredibly complicated history for all its characters. It changes narrative framing to seemingly minor characters, building them up only to kill them off or shift course entirely until far later down the line, like something out of Urasawa’s Monster. The world is too complex to be fully explained in one series, let alone a single book. The sheer density of it all hits you like a freight train, and you just cling on for dear life as it rushes along.
And when I say it rushes along, I mean it flows fast as all hell. The sense of momentum to Del Duca’s art is amazing, and makes me hope that some day this comic will get turned into something animated. Each panel looks like a frame of animation given an extra polish of detail. You have to linger on each page and just soak in all the details. The earthy tones of the world give Shutter a rather grounded feel, and are contrasted by the bright hues whenever conversations get intense or bullets start flying. The layers Gieni adds punctuate the world when other colorists might have simply given the line work all the emotional reigns.
Owen Gieli’s coloring, lighting and shading, on top of Del Duca’s expressive line work and use of perspective; just absolutely astounding work all around.Credit must also be given to the lettering by John Workman. The lettering is not only varied and impactful, but the bubble placement is always directing your eye to the next critical moment.
Tumblr media
The story itself is also quite endearing, despite the larger than life setting and progressively large cast of characters. At the heart of all things is Kate, daughter to the famous (and now deceased) explorer Chris Kristopher, and current travel photographer. She’s got a flat with her transwoman friend Alain and a talking robot cat clock. Life was always an adventure for Kate, but after her father’s passing, she’s tried to put those times behind her.
However, when a gang of rabbits, ninja spirits, and a robot start fighting over Kate against a lion mafia hit squad (yes I just wrote that sentence with a straight face), things quickly begin to unravel as all of Chris’ past choices all start to come crashing down on Kate. A quick visit to the old family home leaves Kate with more questions than a struggling 20-something ex-adventurer can handle, leading to a struggle to regain control in the face of a world determined to force her down a path she refuses to go down.
Among the early revelations for Kate is that her father sired several children, some of which would very much like for Kate to be dead, and others just as innocent as Kate in the ongoing schemes for power and revenge. Along the way, cyber-foxes, secret societies, and even inter-dimensional entities come to blows with Kate and her ever shifting group of allies.
Tumblr media
If there’s one thing you are probably noticing at this point, it’s that a core focus of the entire series is on defying expectations and cutting your own path, even if you struggle for it. From the way the story is told to the actions of our protagonist, the traditional Campbellian hero’s journey gets tossed out the window in favor of a protagonist who actively says things along the lines of “no, f**k that noise, we’re doing this my way” and grapples with the consequences; which is part of what makes Shutter so interesting.
In improv, you’re taught to always say “yes”, no matter what, but Shutter makes a compelling argument for how much more interesting things can become in a story when you dare to say “no”. Volume 2 encapsulates this beautifully with Kate’s rant when she stands before a coallition of her enemies who have been pulling the strings and causing suffering for all those she cares about:
I’ve been trying to deal with it all. Sometimes very poorly and definitely too reactionary because I hoped it’d go away on its own. Sometimes I caved in and ended up doing some really stupid shit, like running off with a minor and possibly killing a fox or jackal or whatever she was, instead of using my brain. And the whole time you all keep relentlessly coming at me with this issue or that whatever, and I kept trying. And I kept messing up. Because everything you all want out of me isn’t who I am.
Everybody feels like I have to deal with their crap or alter my life to suit their needs and do things their way. But guess what? FUCK EVERYBODY! You all want me? You all got me! But on MY terms. Kate Kristopher is back. By popular demand. And she’s going to fight every one of you morons until your collective bullshit is straight up non-existent. Any questions?
So long, Hollywood bog-standard “the chosen one” narrative storytelling! While some stories have taken this concept and rolled with it, like Avatar: The Last Air Bender, Shutter does all it can to flip that notion the hell off and tells it to go jump in a lake.
Tumblr media
It’s a sentiment that appeals to us all, dealing with a world that always demands more of us than what we’re often prepared to give, and is a universal story as a result. The at times absurd scenarios Kate and company find themselves in work because the unusual is normal in the world of Shutter. You can’t get lost in the grass critiquing a particular political angle or detail because the world is intentionally built to shut up that noise and get everyone to sit down and focus on what it’s actually trying to tell. It’s kind of a reverse mute-button, going full blast to keep your attention.
For example Chris Jr., Kate’s secret little brother, has to use a shotgun on someone at some point in self-defense. They address it and talk briefly about it, but in the context of survival and making snap decisions, not the gun itself. Alain being trans is a part of her character development, they even devote a flashback to it, but that’s not even a tenth of Alain’s character as Kate’s best friend and an awesome ass-kicker coming in to save the day. The existence of deities is known and some pay reverance to arcane aspects of the world but others don’t and no one blinks an eye either way. Ghost ninjas aren’t terrifying so much as a nuisance, with people dismissing their ancient moans as a running gag for the first volume.
it’s not that the story doesn’t obviously have a liberal slant, and it’s far from pro-spirituality, but also isn’t taking potshots at anyone (unless you’re part of an ultra-secretive Illuminati-esque organization, in which case, um, hi!). And in our current online and political landscape, that is a refreshing change of pace.
Tumblr media
As if I haven’t gushed enough, it must also be said that good gravy are the amount of cogs in motion in this story just utterly insane. I wasn’t kidding when I said the story could pull Monster levels of bouncing about, with character development for the whole cast and a litany of sub-plots playing out. Also, unlike certain video games, these sub-plots do get properly fleshed out over time, even if the narrative can ignore certain plot beats for a time before bringing them back into focus.
There’s also a sequence in chapter 3 that goes so meta that you almost double-take at the sequence on display. It’s pretty typical for such a surreal universe to have a crazy drug-induced dream sequence, but Shutter goes out of its way to really knock your socks off, and that’s all I’ll say.
Beyond that, I fear I’d spoil too much of the experience for you describing what happens. The series so far has reached Volume 4, and I’ve got my copy patiently sitting on my desk as I write up this review. Each act of the story has taken two volumes, so I’d imagine it will take at least until Volume 6 to wrap everything up.
Tumblr media
If you’re interested in catching up before Volume 5 gets collected, you need to decide if you are going physical or digital. Digital copies have been fairly cheap on Comixology recently, but I honestly plan to get the copies I have digital in physical form at some point. The volumes do cost $15 a piece, but the art is just so much more vivid in physical form, with some of the best covers I’ve seen in ages.
                                              In Summary
Shutter is probably one of my new all-time favorite series. It’s fresh, interesting, laser-focused and realistic of its limitations but also ambitious as hell within those very same boundaries. I can’t wait to see how Kate’s quest to solve the conspiracies and save her friends pans out, but odds are good it’s going to be one hell of a final fight. Until then, it’s going to be a very trippy, hilarious, poignant, and beautiful ride.
