ik some people dont like considering the fact that minecraft is a game into their interpretation of lore but tbh i really like lore that acknowledges that their lives adhere to video game mechanics and thats a part of why i like that tubbo doesnt shy away from including his knowledge of game mechanics in his roleplay. it adds to his character and story and tubbos knowledge of how the game works directly translates to his character being extremely intelligent and skilled
and i think a big part of why people dont like acknowledging that tubbo isnt fail rping by using the game mechanics to his advantage is because they dont like admitting that hes intelligent. they dont like him being more than just the dumb bee boy. they dont like him being able to get a one up on their faves even though their faves are using game mechanics to their advantage too, hell because their faves are doing it too.
using game mechanics to his advantage isnt fail rp. being intelligent and skilled in his own way isnt fail rp. the admins keep him in line when they need to and when they dont they let him do his thing because no matter how many people get upset about it, tubbos knowledge of how the game works is fun and its cool to see.
a good roleplayer knows how to use the medium to their advantage. tubbo isnt failing rp or breaking the no metagaming rules in any way that actually ruins anyone elses enjoyment. hes just using the medium to his advantage. minecraft is a video game and there are literally plot points that depend on acknowledging that. tubbo is intelligent and on top of that he is a good roleplayer and its fine that he roleplays in a different way than some other ccs do because that makes him interesting. if you dont like it then theres a very easy solution: dont watch him

In reference to the last ask you posted! Do you mind going over your tips on role-playing as that active-type character and/or digging up the thread of conversation it seems the original asker was referring to? I'm so interested in your experience role-playing for both prep in possibly joining a game someday and also bc it sounds like such good character creation and general writing advice!!!! I tried checking you blog but didnt turn up anything that touched pn it more (No worries if not though!)
Sorry for this late response!
My advice is make characters that create opportunities for story.
Reacting to a story is fun! Reacting to a character is fun! But if you're always reacting then you're creating opportunity for other characters to react, so sometimes you gotta Act to let the other characters and the story React.
To do this, characters should all want something. And not something vague (like "to be happy"), it should be something more tangible, more specific, and everything else can stem from there. It'll guide your character naturally. It's their Motivation.
More under the cut (or skip to the end for more standard advice)
For example, my dnd character Dandelion wanted more than anything to go home. "Going home" meant a lot of things, yeah it means being happy, it means he wants to be with his family, it means he wants to be loved, it means he wants to feel safe, it means he wants to belong somewhere, but the tangible idea is "go home."
Because I knew this is what he wanted most of all it guided all his actions, and his actions for better or for worse all made sense because of it (and I made it clear that was what he wanted "on-screen" on multiple occasions). So anything that involved the idea of getting home would activate him, and he'd also deeply empathize with anyone and anything else away from home/away from family. Giving him one strong, clear motivation instantly made him an active participant in the story. This made him active with other characters too, any mention of home, any mention of family, any idea of not belonging, it drew him toward them.
(as a DM now this is also what I need more than anything, what's your hook? how can I tempt you? how can I make your character move forward? how can I make your character react? also characters that create opportunity for story take a LOT of work off the DM's shoulders in my experience, it shows you're engaged and it feels less like dragging a cat around on a leash haha like "are you enjoying this? do you want this? i don't know! please give me something!")
my more standard advice?
Be a good listener
Be present (in the moment)
Be curious
Be the biggest fan of all the characters
Put your story on-screen frequently, give people the opportunity to react to it and join in on it (this can be as simple as "my character's body language changes at the mention of 'home')
Create opportunities for the other characters to have their story on-screen (ask them questions! if you know what the character's buttons are and it makes sense in the moment, press them! listen to what they're saying, pay attention to what they're doing, and react to it)
Interact with the world! Interact with each other! And make these things mean something to your character!
Your character should make mistakes. Mistakes create opportunity for everyone.
If there's a genre, or theme, play toward them earnestly.
The more you RP, the better you'll get at it! It's a process and that's okay!
my little tip for knowing whether your character is Active vs Reactive: if the story were a musical, do they have an I Want song? do they have multiple moments for songs within the narrative? have they shared a duet with another character? do their songs change, evolve? songs happen for important moments in a musical so if you're not contributing to important moments, it may mean you're reacting more than you're acting. which is fine if you're playing a game solo and are granted access to the narrative by virtue of being the designated main character, but because RPing is collaborative storytelling, everyone should be doing their part!

i personally like sam claflin’s take on finnick’s family history (there’s an interview iirc he gave after catching fire where he talks a little on it) that he lost his parents when he was young because they were part of some riots in the district during the 51-65th games & that’s what makes him all the more willing to join the rebellion later (& explains his relationship with mags). it’s a means of being close to them and it’s a chance to make them proud & katniss is proof of that being possible to finnick for the first time in a long time

i’m realizing that one of my favorite ways to create a character is by first establishing a major flaw of theirs and then examining how that will inevitably fuck them up a bit. then fleshing them out from there

do you have any thoughts on girl marc? and specifically if her being a girl would have made her do certain things differently bc (presumably) she would have faced a lot of shit in the other classes due to being a woman
every thought I have is like that could be true but also the complete opposite, the only thing I'm confident in is that she would be earth shatteringly hot. like I'm talking fuuuucking crazy gorgeous
there's that picture of marc on the podium in aragon in 2019? girl marc would have killed people
see i have a little trouble with getting into the nitty gritty ‘how would x rider fare as a woman’ of it all because. well there are no women in the grid. and i don’t think that’s because generationally talented motogp superstars is a trait defined by being a cis guy. so if we are doing the gender swap i’m gonna have to like. pantomime these guys experiencing sexism which is an interesting cognitive dissonance to inhabit. like i’m not against a good old horny time (and i think a lot of the time it’s women who imagine these scenarios as a mechanism to like. fill a void that exists in the sport in the first place. would we write as many gender swaps like this if there WERE simply women in the premiere class ??) but it is something i think about, so i’m gonna start there. just as a lil food for thought. interesting sociological phenomenon in sports fandom that i have some complex feelings about. not bad not great.
that all being SAID. wheee fun time. um marc as girl. marc. winning above everything but image always at least a consideration. loves to be hot isn’t the MOST concerned with entirely fitting in a gender box about it as he’s gotten older though he’s still pretty conforming. hmm. i think marc starts her career like long hair straightened compulsively smiling at everybody no matter how sexist they get and. the same sort of murderously crazy on the race track.
i ALSO think. marc’s racing behavior has already earned him a significant amount of haters worldwide even BEFORE sepang-gate and he is a handsome white man. uh oh ! like i think this marc learns a lil earlier a lil harder the lesson that you cannot always care what everyone thinks of you even when it rips you up inside and is in fact significantly traumatic. like people were being WILDLY homophobic to marc in 2015 i cannot imagine how bad it would be for him if he was a girl. but uhhhh all this to say i think she gets a sexy undercut post sepang (it was 2015/16. the only option.) and stops straightening her hair. i also think she hardens up a little more. even less friends even more alex. instagram game would be an absolute MINEFIELD bc it’s one thing to post your own slut back and hole out 9000x as a man it is ANOTHERRRR to do it as a public figure who is a WOMAN. especially coupled with that quote from marc when he was younger about how he didn’t like it when people told him to look sexy in pictures (before he realized he could control that himself on his insta shdhgdgs). in that vein. marc’s catastrophic control issues also interesting. perception wise. good lord. controversial queen
it’s also like. what if you’re the chosen one but aren’t. because he wouldn’t be if he were a girl. would her family pin their financial future on teen marc? would they prioritize alex instead? would marc have to take a different route to the premiere class? would she be the first option for casey stoner’s bike? how much worse would the sepang fallout be? what would marc do to keep winning? keep competing? would it be enough ? like there’s a LOT.

🐝  *  ―  𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗥𝗗 𝗧𝗨𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗟: 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗖 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗥𝗦 important note: only works if you have a pro or a pro plus account, and can use the 'embed' element.
―  STEP ONE:  PREPARING YOUR MUSIC
if you want to have music play on your carrd, the most important thing is, of course, the music. just make sure you have whatever song you want to have played in your files, and if you don't already have it, make sure to download it. now, the next step is to share your file so you'll get a direct file link you can later use in your music player code. personally i'm gonna be using and explaining the dropbox method for this, but there are other ways to do it as well. upload the music file to your dropbox ( either directly or to a special folder, whatever you prefer ) and then click the share button. then create link and copy link and you'll end up with a link that should look something like this: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/j904wa1i2e229tdfa4rkb/ok-3.gif?rlkey=jy7822s2rrgaszj3jduggxn9k&dl=0 to create a direct download link out of this one, take out the 'www' and instead replace it with 'dl' so you'll have something like this: https://dl.dropbox.com/scl/fi/j904wa1i2e229tdfa4rkb/ok-3.gif?rlkey=jy7822s2rrgaszj3jduggxn9k&dl=0 save this link somewhere or keep it handy because we're gonna need it again a little later once we actually start working on the carrd.
―  STEP TWO:  GET THE MUSIC PLAYER ON YOUR CARRD
for the next step, we're gonna be looking at different music player codes. there are a wide variety of ready-to-use ones already available ( for example here ) or if you are good at coding, you can always create your own as well. whatever you prefer and feel more comfortable with. once you've found something you like, copy the code because it's finally time to actually put it all on your carrd. if you have multiple sections and want your music to be played in all of them, either use a header or a footer and if you only want it in one, put it in the one you want to use for this. click on the little '+' to add an embed element to your carrd ( it's the one with this symbol: '</>' ). scroll down to the 'code' section and paste the code of the music player you've previously copied there. next thing you need to do to make sure it plays the song you want is to locate the '<audio id="audio" src="link here"audio"></audio>' and replace the link with the direct file link of your music. to see if you've been successful, you either need to publish your site or save it as a template ( in case you aren't ready to publish it yet but still wanna check if everything worked as planned ) and it should display the music player and play your music once clicked.
―  STEP THREE:  CUSTOMIZE IT ( optional )
the last, and optional, thing you can do is customize it to your preferences. this is best done if you have a little knowledge and understanding of html coding, but minor things like changing colors can totally be done without it. for example, if you want to change colors just locate those within the code ( titled 'color' or 'background-color' and they should have a hexcode number right beside it ) and change the hexcode to whatever you want to use. or if it includes text, you can change the font size ( aptly titled 'font-size' ). you can just play around with different settings to see if you'll get something you like ― most of it within the '<style></style>' section of the code is pretty self-explanatory.

I don't hate the end result, considering I was racing the clock before XIV's maintenance, after finally finding gear that was close enough to the original!

Its so funny realizing you engaged in Homestuck in your development- bc same- and it did raise a certain generation with a baseline enjoyment for alien/monstrous behaviors. Like nonchalant of course this character has rows of fangs and horns and tentacles and strange rituals of engagement in how they proceed sexually or not. And also you did feel like someone who knew what a kismesis and morail are.
And also you did feel like someone who knew what a kismesis and morail are.
Congrats, best compliment anyone's ever given me, ahaHAH—of course I've been called out specifically for my two favorite quadrants.
Honestly, you put it perfectly. There is so much of Homestuck that started out Like That pretty much for the meme before Hussie started putting a lot more thought into it, and the fandom was so deeply goddamn dedicated to taking all of Hussie's bullshit and wrangling it into an actual way of setting up a society, culture, and biology that made meaningful sense. I also tangibly remember the not-very-slow transition of going from "um, tentacles? what?" to "wait, this person drew X character WITHOUT an intersex tentadick set up downstairs? that seems incorrect. dnw."
The quadrant system remains my roman empire and my crowning achievement in that regard is writing an Alternia's-version-of-queer character who got smeared across every tabloid in Alternia not because he got photographed kissed a boy but because he got photographed kissing his moirail.
I just think that Homestuck did great things for my psyche. It's just the most piece of media ever, is all I'm saying.

ok so about codeflippa i have a theory!! i remember phil talking about the code being a fucked up version of the eggs. a failed prototype that is now hunting the eggs because of jealousy. it’s jealous of the love they get, while it’s most probably suffering alone. SO. and this might be a stretch and me just straight up being delusional BUT maybe the code impersonating flippa is its attempt to see what parental love is like. it knows that q!slime isn’t going to harm it while it looks like his dead daughter.
i mean. the code most probably wants to take advantage of q!slimes grief in some way BUT MAYBE just MAYBE it also wants to be loved!!

It's early into the morning shortly after the night to day shift change on the bridge occurred on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D. The dull hum of the ship vibrates through the bustling corridors and quarters, including the living space of Lt. Commander Data.
Within Commander Data's quarters sits his workstation, hundreds of little green dots on the screen blinking intermittently all across the screen. To human eyes, the pattern would appear imperceptibly fast. However to an android, it became an code written in a process similar to complex form of morse.
The encrypted message remained repeating, waiting for its intended receptor to find it. It masked a frequency number that lead to a proxied connection, providing an "address" to return messages to, and one simple message:
H E L L O B R O T H E R .
