It Shows

Written for @flashfictionfridayofficial 220 prompt.

“It shows,” she says, staring at the new baby. He frowns.

 

“What?”

 

“Blood shows. You know who he really belongs to.” The queen continues, “no matter how the princess tries to hide it.”

 

Her husband studies his ‘grandson’ again. She is right as much as he hates to admit it. This child isn’t a true heir.

 

“What is wrong with our son.” He turns away from the newborn. He will join all the others in being cared for away from the castle.

 

Her laugh is harsh. “A very good question, my Lord. This is the fifth child born looking like…”

 

“Don’t speak it.” He orders. Behind him the baby let’s out a cry. He is soothed by his nurse. “It is known but shouldn’t be spoken.”

 

They go to their daughter -in -law.  She reclines on her bed recovering from childbirth. At seeing the look on her in laws faces, she sits up.

 

“Another to be sent away.” His Majesty reports .

 

“You cannot keep sending my children away.”

 

“As long as they remain just yours and not our son’s, yes we can.” The Queen coldly says.

 

They turn and leave her weeping.

 

“Blood is thicker then water, my child.” The king speaks with the prince, “I am sorry that the princess isn’t who you want, but you must do your duty and produce a heir.”

 

“Father, I swore to love her forever. How am I to lay with another?” He paces about the garden, “She doesn’t desire me either.”

 

“That is obvious in her children. Nevertheless, you must. Both of you close your eyes, and pretend it is your loves.”

 

A year later the princess welcomed a little prince. His grandmother was right. Blood tells.

I recently watched RTGames' play through of Heavy Rain by David Cage. (you might know it from "endlessly screaming Jason Glitch" or "Comedically disastrous chase scene"). Well, my mind keeps coming back to it, like a child studying a weird bug.

If the plan was to have Jason die by getting hit by a car, why not just have the family outing take place outside? Like a fair or a park. At least that way Jason doesn't seem like the dumbest kid alive for running 100,000 miles away the very second his Dad doesn't have his eyes on him.

also, How did Jason die? Because in the gameplay it definitely looks like Ethan should have taken the brunt of that crash. I guess David Cage was counting on gamers failing that QTE.

The only prominent black characters who get speaking roles is: a ruthless criminal that talks like how a french white man would interpret AAVE, and a random groundkeeper in a cementary whose just there to info dump to the white people.

Madison Paige, the only playable female character, has to fight off men trying to sexually/pyshically assault her not once, not twice but three fuckin' times. And one of those is a dream sequence that has no relevance to the plot.

Hyperpatriarchal (LITERALLY 'Father Wolf') backstory and continued hypermasculine take on werewolves

The feminine side of the hyperpatriarchal backstory being An Insane Lady (Luna) whose moods are just so weird and bonkers and gosh those ladies amirite

like how many examples do you need, do you need me to write you a whole novel. And to be clear: I do have screen grabs of the women's shelter thing, that wasn't a fever dream.

EDIT: While I am aware that 2nd Ed did fix a lot of issues with the line, it was too little too late for me. I might entertain the idea of giving 2nd Ed a shot, and have in the past, but a) conlang, ugh, jfc, all that fucking conlang, b) tribes still don't make a ton of sense, c) still a lot of the same hypermasculine overtones.

It should nonethless not have taken nearly so long for it to find its 'maybe let's not shame and exclude marginalized genders' legs.

Charlos something:

Even the fans start to pick up on the rather earnest looks Charles gives him. It makes him stutter and forget his train of thought at times, and he can tell Charles takes a certain smugness in his ability to make Carlos blush and giggle while he’s trying to be serious. Carlos tries to reciprocate while Charles is talking, but Charles is already always flustered when Carlos gets within two feet of him, which he thinks he should take as a win.

Charlos Merlin AU:

“Or a reason for why you are walking with a limp,” Carlos finishes, sipping his tea like he didn’t just make Charles’ heart stop dead.

Charles continues walking until he has his back to a tense Carlos and an embarrassed Lando, forcing himself to inhale and exhale slowly, plastering a fake smile and placing Carlos’ stupid breakfast on the table with a little more force than strictly necessary, and looks Carlos straight in the eye when he replies, “You would like to know.”

When Carlos swallows harshly, looking down and breaking eye contact, Charles knows he has won.

Charlos,,, College AU (Charles: Art; Carlos: Engineering)

Carlos still seems to be searching for something in his eyes. “Oh, cariño,” he says softly, his hand coming up to cup the side of Charles’ face. “What did I say to you? Why are you acting like I want to end our friendship?”

That makes Charles’ brain shut up. “What?” 

Carlos continues caressing his face, looking increasingly more worried by the minute. “What is it that I said?” He sounds slightly hurt, and Charles squeezes his eyes shut, the pain in his chest feeling akin to a stab wound.
