Note: After that last tooth-rotting fluff of a crack fic I wrote for Christmas, we’re back to usual business with some very angsty hurt/comfort & smut involving a bunch of hot brooding killers as love interests. I. Fire

There is a shout and you wake up with a groan.

What the fuck is Frankie doing?

Are the three others already back? They left like 15 minutes ago for the town, or were you actually asleep longer?

From the haze of your nap, you're slow to understand something is wrong.

And then the unmistakable sound of a shot being fired feels like a bucket of ice water thrown in your face.

Oh shit oh shit oh shit

There is more shouting and heavy steps on the stairs up to your floor. You guess men, at least 2 or 3.

You grab your phone, send a single word to the group chat.

You pray to all the gods of war they will get the message.

You know they haven't forgotten the word. The dreaded word, meaning it's bad. Really bad. As in “the safehouse is compromised” bad. You had only used it once, a long time ago, when the crappy flat you've been hiding in for a mission in Columbia had been discovered.

And you know none of you would use it for a joke.

You never thought you had to use it again, but it seems your previous life is catching up on you. The former sins never really leave the sinner.

Shots fired

There is an hesitation before you type out the next words. But there is no hiding the truth.

You hit send the second Santi's answer appears on your screen.

It’s a long-ass time in a situation like this. You know it. They know it. No use in lying right now.

The three dots meaning Santi's typing a new answer are blinking, but the steps are getting too close now. You throw the phone under the bed and dive on the nightstand to reach for the gun hidden there.

That's when the door flies open. A mass of black fabric and shiny parts crashes into you before you can remove the safety of the gun. You land heavily on the wooden floor, the firearm gliding too far from you reach. The violence of the attack punches the air out of your lungs. Pain surges, unexpected and brutal, albeit familiar. You thought you had managed to forget about it, but you guess your body couldn't bury the memory of the bruises blooming and the bones straining to stay in one piece.

But with pain comes the adrenaline, hot in your veins, urging you to do something, anything. You kick and fight and scream. And the mass on top of you finally moves. The cold barrel of a gun is pressed on your brow, and you think that's it. That's the end. That's how you're gonna die. Just awaken from a nap, in the space you thought the safest on hearth, pressed on the floor of your own bedroom. You've gone weak, you think. Just a couple years ago, you would have no problem keeping on the fight.

One of the men is seizing your arms and yanking them in your back, and you hear the small buzzing noise those double zip ties handcuffs make when being closed.

Oh.

So you're not gonna die right away.

They keep you there, flat on the ground, while one of the men checks the other rooms. You focus on the black boots in front of your face. Nothing else you can do. Military models. Clean, but not brand new. The leather is worn but well taken care of. Shit. This means it is not their first rodeo, means those guys are professionals to some extent.

You're pulled up by gloved hands roughly digging in your arms. Brought back down to the living room. You expected the place to be a battlefield, but apart from the 2 strangers clad in black and the hole of a bullet just above the couch, it looks deceptively tidy. And then you see him, Frankie, hands and ankles tied, kept on his belly by the boot of one of the brutes pressing between his shoulder blades. His hair is a mess, there's red on his face, but his eyes are wide open, frantically searching for yours.

Your attackers are five. They're all sporting the same black tactical gear, all wearing a hood except for one of them. Shaven head, a five o'clock shadow, mean clear eyes and a square jaw. A gnarly scar slashing white on his chin. You don't know him, but he definitely looks the part. You guess former military, probably went to work for private security companies, and every now and then some shady missions, easy and generously paid in cash by some unknown patrons.

"Bring me the girl." He orders his men when your eyes meet his.

You're yanked next to him, forcefully plopped on a kitchen chair. He comes closer and without any warning brings his fist to your guts. You let out a strangled cry. It hurts fiercely, and you think for a second you’re gonna puke.

“Just so you know we’re not here to play.”

It’s a message both to you and Frankie, who’s gritting his teeth, straining more than ever against his restraints.

“Now I’m sure both of you are trained to resist interrogation, but we will have to find a solution.” He continues, circling around you, before coming over Frankie and crouching in front of his face. He grasps his hair, forcing his neck in a painful angle.

“I’m gonna ask you something and you’re gonna answer. Ok?” he adds. “Or else I’m gonna start hurting your girlfriend over there, and it’s not gonna be pretty.” His tone is flat, devoid of anger or scorn. It’s freaking unnerving.

“So, tell me where they are? The three others…”

Frankie stays silent.

Well. That's bad news he knows about the whole team, but the simple fact he’s asking this question shows they’re not as prepared as they seemed to be. Real pros would have had the house under surveillance hours before breaking in, and would definitely have followed your boyfriends when they left half an hour ago. Good. In this shitty situation, that’s at least something good. All you need is to buy some time.

You’re still trying your best to not throw up, but you overplay the thing a little, keeping your head down, and heaving loudly. The hood-less man finally leaves Frankie alone, and comes back to you. The other soldiers stay put, but you catch some of their nervous little moves in the corner of your eyes. He grabs your jaw, fingers pressing bruises in your flesh, making you look at him. Showing his face like this, thinking he doesn’t have to hide it, what a fool.

“Where are they?” he asks again, turning to Frankie. “Fuck you” you answer, even if you know he’s not asking you. He slaps you, hard, and your head flies to the side. You don’t have to fake the pained grunt escaping your busted lips.

The sounds around you are muffled for a second, but you can hear Frankie swearing in Spanish and threatening to do all sorts of ugly things to your tormentor if he keeps hurting you.

But the man keeps asking “Where are they?” and honestly you could laugh, because it’s all so absurd. You’re still wearing those flimsy pj shorts and this oversized blue T-shirt you stole from Benny, and you’re tied up in our own living room, and there are 5 goons-for-hire trying to coax out of you the fact Pope and the Millers are just downtown shopping for car parts and frankly none of this makes sense, and you briefly wonder if you’re not just having another very vivid nightmare.

He hits you again, and warm blood trickles down your chin. Frankie’s rage just grows another notch, but he says nothing. He knows you can take it, the physical pain is like an old friend at this point, you’ve known worse in your previous life.

That is until your attacker switches tactics. He looks at Frankie, “I see you don’t want to talk” he removes his gloves and explains very calmly. “You know there are other ways to make people hurt. Maybe this will make you reconsider your choice.”

He’s not hitting you anymore, he just splays his hands on your thighs, then slides higher, on your sides, before he paws at your breast, only covered by the thin cotton of your T-shirt. His touch is not rough. It’s soft, the touch of a lover.

Except he’s not.

You freeze. You could easily headbutt him, or throw your knee into his crotch, or try to flee. But your muscles refuse to obey. It’s not like a panic attack, you’re not hyperventilating or screaming or crying. It’s worse actually, you can’t focus on anything else but his flesh on yours. It burns like acid. There is bile in the back of your throat, and terror in the pit of your stomach. You’re stuck on this freaking chair, helpless, and as soon as you catch up with his intentions, it's like your mind has left your body. You're not in control anymore, you can't even speak, words stuck into your throat even though you want to scream. The feeling is unfortunately not new, although it doesn't lessen its violence, quite the contrary - you’re that terrified teenager again, caught in a room you can’t escape. This is a nightmare, you think again.

Frankie sees it, your terror, the sideration. He forgets his angry swearing to speak in quick and soft words, voice shaky as he's begging for the man in black to stop.

The gentle thud of a bullet being shot through a silencer registers as the same time one of the soldiers heavily hits the ground. A second guy falls down limply just before a smoke grenade detonates behind you. In the span of a second everything turns to chaos. You use to thrive in chaos, and the perfectly timed diversion allows you to regain some control over your body - finally. You throw yourself on the ground, your shoulder and ribs landing with a loud crack on the hard tiles.

Bullets are flying around for a brief moment as the three remaining attackers are firing back, but they’re quickly terminated or at least hurt enough to not be able to fight. All you can see through teary eyes is grey smoke, and your lungs are burning from it, but you know it means this nightmare will be over.

Familiar shoes enter your visual field as the smoke lazily dissipates, and Will’s face is suddenly next to yours.

“Fuck, are you hurt?”

The inhuman sound you make when he grabs your upper arm seems to indicate you are.

“Shit, don’t move, don’t move.”

You feel a cold blade grazing your wrists and you’re free, finally flopping on your back. The same blade slashes through your T-shirt, baring your dislocated shoulder to Will’s gaze.

“Fuck. Shit.”

Language you think, too high on adrenaline and pain.

“It’s gonna hurt a little babe, I’m sorry.”

Will is not very fond of nicknames, it should be really bad.

“Ok, don’t move” You would not be able to even if you wanted to. He grabs your injured arm and instructs you to “just breathe.”

You do, and then he pulls and twists, and the bones of your shoulder click back in place. You let out a groan as your vision darkens, the pain piercing through your chest, nasty and cruel.

You get back to your senses when Will lifts you up in his arms, carrying you out of the room, your good hand clutching at the strap of the sniper gun slung on his back. The living room is eerily silent, save for the low voices of Santi and Frankie talking to your abuser, reduced to a shapeless black heap lying at their feet and barely breathing.

“Don’t look” dryly comments Ironhead, and you can hear the cold anger in his voice although it's not directed at you. All you can catch is the glint of Santi’s combat knife and the squeaking of the man on the floor before you’re carried outside.

II. Aftermath

The rest is a blur. You remember being left on the back seat of a SUV, Benny at the wheel, freaking out at your disheveled and bloody appearance. You remember the long drive, hours, maybe even a whole day, and then the nice cabin next to this small lake - a very old family home of the Millers. You remember your boys taking turns guarding your new house, while the others could rest a little.

This little encounter has you drained for a week. Except for your shoulder, no major injury is accounted for. Bruises and cuts, some swellings and scratches, a very sensitive nose bridge and chafed wrists. Nothing new and nothing that should affect you this much. But you know it's more about the wounds of the mind than the physical ones. You're slow to recover and your newly-found insomnia is not helping. Fortunately, each time it's Will's turn to be able to sleep, he comes to your bed and cradles your body with his own - and that's the only way you can finally feel safe enough to fall asleep.

You wake up one day to discover Will is gone, and you hum in contentment at the realization you managed to sleep on your own. The modest room is gently lit by the late morning sun piercing through the cracks of the wooden shutters. You need a shower, and you desperately need to wash your hair. But with an arm out of service, it's not the easiest task. You silently pat through the narrow corridor and muffle a yawn while opening the bathroom door. You’re welcomed by the sight of Frankie's bare back, still damp from the shower he just took.

A few drops slide along the lean muscles of his back only to be caught into the towel around his waist. He’s not as broad as the others, not as strong, not as young. But what he lacks in pure physical strength, he makes up for in skills and patience. Both on the battlefield and in your bed. There is a smear of yellow on his golden skin, a faint bruise between his shoulder blades. A testimony of what had happened a week ago. You reach for it, and he lets you, looking at your blurred face into the mirror in front of him.

“Are you okay?” you ask, fingers ghosting over his skin.

“Do you need my help? To wash?” he answers instead.

He doesn’t complain when he leads you where he just was, turning on the water, making sure it’s not too cold. The room is still foggy and warm from his own previous shower, and you start to relax under the hot spray. Frankie handles your injured arm with care, but he’s not afraid to put some pressure on the rest of your body. You melt under his touch as his fingers explore each of your limbs. When he’s done, you lean against his chest and grip his arms to fold them on your belly, savoring the calming feeling.

“I’m sorry” he whispers, breaking the comfortable silence, “I’m so sorry”.

You understand what he’s talking about, and you’re not surprised he’s the one of the team who seems to harbour the most guilt. Catfish would always been the most susceptible to self-doubt, to letting himself drown into the dangerous spiral of self-loathing. He’s not looking for your pity, you’re sure of that. He just needs you to know this truth.

“I’m the one who’s sorry, I’m the one who should have saved you, we both know I’m better than you at close combat, Fish.” you end your sentence with a sad chuckle. He doesn’t protest, because he’s too smart for his sake, and he lets you have the final word. He will keep his guilt, no matter what.

He’s not the only one to feel guilty though. You’ve seen how the face of the others crumble when you flinch because of a jerky movement, when you seem to always be on high alert with each unexpected noise.

You are a wild thing, always had been - hard to approach, harder to tame.

And PTSD is not a new thing, not for them, not for you, it basically comes with the job. But you’ve usually managed to deal with it one way or another.

Until now. The other day, you almost punched Santi out of reflex when he gently pulled on your wrist to grab your attention. He had hopefully ducked in time to not finish with your fist into his nose. You had thrown yourself into his arms and apologized profusely, while he patted your back with a stunned face, trying to calm both you and himself.

Words thrown out in the dim light of the cramped kitchen, hoping that telling them out loud would make them true somehow.

It’s ok, love…

It’s rare you spend more than a few days without fooling around with at least one of them. But it’s been almost three whole weeks and you’ve yet to venture further than a quick kiss or a very chaste shower with Frankie. The slickness between your legs when you wake up next to the firm and warm body of Will is sometimes hard to ignore. But you’re not so quite sure you actually want this.

When you’re alone for more than a couple minutes, you replay the events of that day in your head. And it’s like you could feel the ghost-touch of the man in black, on your jaw, on your thighs, on your breasts. As if he had left something on your skin, burning and impossible to ignore. No matter how long you shower, no matter how tight you wrap yourself into the sheets of your bed.

You realize that no one has asked you exactly what happened. Frankie had told Santi and then the others, but none of them seems brave enough to ask for your version. Or maybe it’s just they don’t want to upset you by forcing you to relive the handful of minutes who wracked your life so spectacularly. Thing is, you’re already rehashing them every fucking day. It’s obsessive, it’s swirling non stop at the back of your mind and you don’t know how to stop it. It feels like being caught in quicksand, it’s actually becoming worse the more you try to escape it. You can’t remember a mission, even the most precarious ones, settling their poisonous claws into your brain like this.

And the worst is you start feeling guilty too. Guilty because you’ve not only been unable to fight back then, you’re also unable to fight right now.

You’ve gone weak, weak, weak.

III. Healing

Each day looks like the previous one, and if it wasn’t for your bruises and scrapes gradually fading into your skin, you could swear time had stopped. During another eventless afternoon, you’re looking for that damn phone charger that you keep losing. Benny is by your side, not really helping but following you around like a freaking therapy dog. After emptying all the drawers in the bedroom, you blindly reach under the bed, in a desperate last resort. Your hand unexpectedly closes around something soft. You come out with a crumpled T-shirt in a familiar dark blue shade. It’s dirty, and stained in blood, and torn apart at the sleeve.

“Hey that’s my T-shirt, I’ve been looking f-...” Benny’s last words die on his lips when he remembers and understands what exactly it is. You’re too fazed to react. Eyes wide, a breath hitching in your throat. He gently pulls you against him.

“You can steal another one from me if you want, I promise I will only mildly complain about it.” he murmurs into your hair. You chuckle because he’s being dumb and that’s exactly what you need right now.

“I’m sorry Benny, I was too weak to even defend your favorite T-shirt…” you scoff.

“Hey, hey, look at me. Don’t joke about that, babe, you weren’t weak, ok?” He calls your bullshit with such candor, you can’t be mad at him. Calloused hands cradle your face. “I’m sure you did what you could.” he goes on, and you feel a little lost in the grey-blue of his kind eyes, “you know, if you… if you feel ready, you can tell me what happened, so I can help you see that.”

There is a solid minute before you break the silence.

And you let it all go. Barely taking breath between two tirades, the words stuck into your throat for too long finally tumble out of your mouth. Fat tears roll on your cheeks at some point but you ignore them, forging on with your confession. Benny listens carefully, thumb gently wiping away the wetness on your face. The sky outside is the same color as his eyes, casting a comforting glow in the room.

There is a pause when he waits to make sure you’re done, before speaking again. “You managed to send an efficient distress signal before resisting torture long enough to buy us time, I would not call that weak.” he offers.

Benny plants a quick kiss on your forehead and lingers a bit. You close your eyes.

Suddenly, there seems to be a little less quicksand in your mind.

The boys all have their routine around the house. Will spends most of his day taking care of your new home - which is actually not new at all, and in desperate need of various repairs. You can catch him on the roof cleaning old tiles or with an axe in hands cutting some wood for the stove. He needs to feel useful, to keep busy, to craft and mend and patch things up.

Santi, he goes for a run at any hour of the day or the night, and comes back barely standing. He’s being too hard on himself, it’s self-harm at this point. He’s always seen himself as the leader of your little team - no, your little family - and he took that attack personally. He failed to protect you, to protect Frankie, to protect your home. And he’s not sure he will ever forgive himself.

Benny spends a lot of time with you, his usual babbling is a welcome distraction. You sometimes feel like two kids endlessly planning mischief. One day, you gathered enough wood scraps and spare parts to set up an improvised shooting range behind the cabin, under Pope's disapproving glare. At least, now you've figured how to shoot and reload with only one hand.

And then there's Frankie. Quiet as a cat, he can usually be found bunched over a map or a computer, his mind racing to try and understand who is behind the attack.

And how to make them pay.

Having four men looking out for you at any and each moment can really be annoying, but at the same time it’s kinda nice. Nice to be held in strong arms when you wake up from a nightmare, nice to have someone to clean your wounds, nice to know they have your back.

It's nice also to lean against a broad chest, dozing off on the couch, like right now. Will is laid back, taking the whole couch, with you on top of him. He’s studying a folded paper map of God knows where, you guess on Morales' orders. The other boys are somewhere outside. The sun is not yet setting. The only sound you can hear is the faint but steady beat of Will’s heart and the soft background noise of the woods: birds and a gentle breeze in the deep green leaves. It’s calming. You could almost feel serene. Your nape feels hot and you shift a bit against Will, gosh this man is radiating heat.

His hand absentmindedly falls on the top of your head, like he’s trying to reassure a startled animal. You let him gently pet your hair for a while. A familiar longing settles in your gut, warmth spreading between your legs before you can prevent it. Your body is reacting once again on its own, it’s freaking Pavlovian at this point. Maybe you actually do, because you’re pretty sure your lashes are wet when you crash your lips against Will’s.

But first you tip toe barefoot to the bathroom. A splash of water on your face helps you wake up for good. You cross your own eyes in the mirror above the sink. You look tired, and your skincare routine hasn’t really been your priority recently. But you can’t help but smile at yourself. The girl in front of you, she looks tough, street-smart. Yeah, maybe she has a fucked-up shoulder. Maybe she looks a little vulgar, with those fresh hickies on her neck and her unkempt hair and her unapologetic smile. But she looks like a warrior nonetheless. In more ways than one.

No one made suppressants stronger than Hange. They never divulged just what was in their special concoction, but all you knew was that it was damn near impossible for someone to discern that you were an Omega.

You’d even fooled that naive, arrogant, hubristic Alpha partner of yours for years. There was a particular disdain you held for Reiner. You could never really name it, but all you knew was that working with the giant man made your instincts sour. Are you strange like me?

Written for: @youngmoneymillas 5k challenge Squares filled: First kiss for @buckybarnesbingo and Touch starvation for @marvelfluffbingo (there is fluff at the end, I swear that counts!) Prompt: “I think there’s a flaw in my code/These voices won’t leave me alone/Well my heart is gold and my hands are cold (Gasoline – Halsey)” Pairing: Bucky x F!reader Warnings: Angst O´hoy. There are PTDS elements, anxiety and panic etc but not too much (and there is fluffy flufflfuff at the end because that’s just the rules, mkay?), mentions of war and being kidnapped, touch starvation mentioned. Rating: Teen and up Word count: ca 3,5 k Summary: After the war you need somewhere to belong, and The Avengers need someone to make them look good. A/N: Yeah, this got a life of it’s own. Not really how I initially planned it but I’m happy with how it turned out. I’m surprised at myself for keeping it clean (seriously, who am I?) I have little to no knowledge of military jargong and workings so if there are any mistakes please let me know and I will fix. English is my 2nd language and this is unbetad so all mistakes are mine.

Tony’s brown eyes felt just as enigmatic and piercing even through the television screen, whiskey and liquid intelligence peering at the interviewer from behind thick sunglasses slid down to the tip of his nose; and on the side of him, smaller, grey, bland, were you, looking every bit as uncomfortable as you had felt.

You grabbed the flesh between clavicle and chest, kneading and scratching the skin where the weight of your medals had hung only hours ago, where the echo of them still made it hard for you to breathe.

“She’s a perfect addition to the team and she’s been adapting beautifully. We’re really proud to have another veteran amongst our midst,” Tony clapped a proud hand on your shoulder and flashed the camera one of his legendary PR-smiles “we’re lucky to have her.”

“Ugh.” You clicked the TV off and turned around on the couch, laying with your face towards the cushions.

The Avengers had been in deep water after the latest attack on New York, more and more of the masses forgetting what they’d done for them — and where they would be if they hadn’t. Acting- and calling them out for the destruction and desolation. Anger fueled by fear leading them in a search for a focus point to target their pain. The team needed to make a move to get in the people’s good graces again.

And then there were you.

After the war nothing had been the same. Before when you closed your eyes there had been darkness and calm behind your eyelids, an ethereal vastness that relaxed you, allowed you to breathe before opening them again. A refuge in your daily ongoings.

After there had been nothing but gunsmoke and ash, billowing from the depths you stared into each time you closed your eyes. Wretched stench of putrefied flesh simmering in the smoke and seeping into your skin from behind your eyelids, digging tunnels in your fibers, filling your nose and mouth with dry sand and bile.

You gasped, back shooting out from the couch as if you could escape the waking nightmare sticking to the inside of your skull. It burned at your temples like electricity.

The official statement was that you were a normal soldier, a gunner, that had been captured and held captive, then somehow managed to not only break yourself out, but the other seven soldiers stuck in that hellhole beside you as well; and you’d gotten mighty decorated for it.

You scoffed. Decorated, sure, and forced to lie.

There had been nothing normal about you, or what happened. No one spoke a word of the special ops you’d been a part of, or that the people that had held you captive had neither been Al-qaeda or even the Taliban. It had been Hydra. The Nazi science division that you’d been told in school had been taken down by Captain America.

Cut off one head, and two will take its place. Uh-huh, yep.

That was not the only lie you’d been told, or been forced to tell. The seven other captives were more like hundreds, hundreds of lives that you’d left behind when you managed to flee with only a small group as the others were left being tortured and experimented on. Their screams stayed with you, a never ending echo in the hollow of your mind.

The other seven —among them a woman named Grace, a fellow american with black hair and even blacker eyes, and a smile that refused to be beaten down— had been taken down during your escape. Grace had clutched her chest as the blood from it sprayed across your arm, she’d fallen, roaring at you to go, to run, to ‘fucking save yourself, damnit!’. You’d gotten out with only a bullet wound through your right hand and left shoulder, and a newfound weight in your chest.

According to your Officer the public didn’t need to know that the people you saved didn’t survive, only that you had freed them.

“Remember, Sergeant. You gave them the gift of dying free. That’s quite something.”

Yeah well, they didn’t look free, and it sure as hell didn’t feel like a gift.

Survivor’s guilt your shrink called it. Whatever.

You kneaded the spot where your medals had hung. The Medal of Honor and the Prisoner of War among others. You shuddered; revulsion tumbling in your gut. It was a torment wearing them- but it was, as they say, a necessary evil.

When you’d returned you couldn’t, just as many others, get back to your normal life; a decade of training and war had taken a toll and you weren’t the same. The trauma clung to your spine like a ball and chain slowly turning your vertebrates into lead. It had made a home for itself there in your back, cozying up in the hollow where neck meets skull, safe where you couldn’t reach.

You had been tethering on the edge of insanity when you’d finally broken down and pleaded with your Captain to let you back out there, and thankfully, blissfully, he had —albeit a bit reluctant— agreed. But it wasn’t the same. Suddenly you couldn’t work with your group, too on edge, too hyper aware and too concerned by your teammates safety. Once you were back your team had started out on a small mission, delicate but nothing you couldn’t handle — or that’s how it should have been. You had once been like a well oiled machine and now you were falling apart. So you got discharged, told it just wasn’t a good fit anymore, which was a “real shame considering.”

So The Avengers needed too look good, and you needed a place where you could belong. And nothing gets you back into America’s good graces as a decorated veteran.

So here you were.

Here you were..

The sound of opening and closing doors followed by laughter made your ears perk up. Steve and Bucky back from their morning run, from the sounds of it. Steve’s laughter easy and full and Bucky’s quieter, more of a chuckle — deep and tense. Always so tense.

Bucky had adapted relatively quickly to life at the compound, but he still kept mostly to himself. Steve, of course, had made it his life’s mission to draw the old Bucky out, teasing and joking with him, taking him back to Coney Island, practically dragging him out of his room for Team bonding nights (usually movie nights, but sometimes you played video games, and one particularly memorable evening Clint had persuaded the entire team into playing Twister. He lost. Every time), yet it never felt sincere from Bucky’s side. He did try. You could see it in the shape of his stance, the frustration burning in his eyes in spite of the broad grin he managed to apply for Steve. Still it looked less like two friends hanging out and enjoying down time together and more like a frightened animal trying to appease it’s rescuer.

You had no idea if anyone else noticed it, but you had a pretty big clue that Steve had caught on. Every once in a while Bucky would look away, trying his damndest to laugh at one of Tony’s jokes, and something arduous would set in the blue of Steve’s eyes like stone.

Both men came through the doors, sweat darkening their clothes and making them glisten in the morning sun.

“Good run?”

Steve almost jumped.

“Oh, hi Y/n. Yeah, Bucky still aint got shit on me though.” he laughed and shook Bucky’s shoulder playfully. Bucky flinched slightly at the contact, but quickly managed to correct himself, quirking the corner of his mouth in a half smile and raising his hand in greeting.

“Language,” you admonished with a wink before letting your eyes land softly on Bucky and offering a small smile “Morning, Buck.”

He huffed a little, a twitch in his smile: a mirroring sensation in your chest.

Steve looked between the both of you with a raised brow.

“Yeah, okay. Gotta hit the showers! You too, punk— you reek.”

Something light flashed in Bucky’s eyes and his smile grew almost sincere.

“Do not gimme that, you’re the punk. Always were.”

“Yeah, but that was before I hit my growth spurt!”

You snorted at the same moment Bucky did, sniggering under your breath.

Steve looked absolutely delighted.

“Some growth spurt..” Bucky mumbled following Steve towards the elevators.

The anxiety was a physical thing. It was birthed out of every patch of skin where you had been touched, ebbing out like crests until you were covered in it — sticky and suffocating, viscous and disgusting, and you were painted from tip to toe.

You cursed yourself under your breath for not thinking it through. The PR-people had of course wanted you to wear your dress uniform and you had simply refused, thinking ‘no, no anything but that. Going naked would be better than that’ and after some coaxing from Tony and Miss Potts they had relented. What a mistake it had been.

Now there you were, locked in your room in a gorgeous gown that showed more skin than not, after a night of having been passed around like a basket of breadsticks.

Smile for the camera.

Oh hi, hello, why yes I am she, yes I did save those soldiers.

Handshake.

Anything for my country.

Laugh.

Oh yes, they have been treating me real nice.

Hugs.

Touches.

Gooseflesh.

Panic.

Bile.

Two hours were all you could take and when Pepper had called to a toast you saw your chance and took it. Now your clothes pooled in a trail on the floor leading to your bathroom as you hurried into the spray.

The daffodil-yellow loofah quickly worked up a lather, the sudds slightly pink and smelling of strawberries and cream, a welcome softness after the sharp and biting too harsh reality of the party. Scrubbing up and down your body your muscles started to untense, the coating of dread coming off like shedded skin. A sigh escaped your lips: you could breathe again.

Of course, you had agreed to all of this, to help, to be this shining face and PR circus for the team, because it also meant that you in fact were a part of said team. Skillset-wise you were absolutely up to par with both Barton and Romanoff and they all seemed genuinely happy to have you. But this.. facade, was the price you had to pay, and you gladly did — did not mean it didn’t hurt to do it though.

Hair washed and every inch of your skin thoroughly scrubbed pink you got out of the shower, wrapping yourself in a big fluffy robe, sighing at the comforting slide of cotton against your bones.

You exhaled loudly, slumping down on your bed, ignoring the trilling ringtone of your phone in favour of the fluffy pillows that gave way for your weight like a hug. Pepper would have to wait.

Tap, tap, tap.

A soft knock on your door snapped you out of focus. Not in the mood for company you hesitated, even though knowing fully well who was on the other side of that door. Metal on metal gave a much sharper sound than flesh.

“Bucky?” you opened the door ajar.

He looked a bit sheepish and apologetic, hunched in the empty corridor.

“Hey, Y/n… you okay?”

You shrugged, but then looked him over. He was doing a good job of holding it together but you could see the signs: the nervous tapping of his fingers against the wall, his skin a shade paler than usual and his eyes flickering from point to point, not stilling for more than a few seconds.

“Are you?”

Abalone eyes flitted to yours �� so bright, so sharp.

“Of course,” he tried for a smile “I just wanted to check on you. You kinda took off like somebody burned ya.”

You huffed.

“Yeah, well.. I wasn’t as prepared as I thought I was for-.. for everything.”

Nodding he ran a hand through his hair, a scent sent wafting. Your skin turned effervescent.

“You wanna come in?”

There was no mistaking the gratefulness softening his gaze.

You backed up to let him in, careful to lock the door behind him.

He sat down on your bed, his eyes snapping across your room and his fingers tapping away at his thigh.

“Howd’ya manage to make it so… homey so fast?”

You followed his gaze to your walls, the paintings and curiosities covering them, the shelves with figurines and too many plants, the bookcase littered with books and notebooks and the deep teal coloured couch with more cushions than actual space for sitting.

You plopped down next to him, careful of keeping your robe from slipping.

“I don’t know, I just can’t stand cold walls.”

A beat of silence followed, hardening the air. Always this damn feeling when he got close, every time.

“You write?” he asked, pointing at your notebook lying open on your nightstand.

“Sometimes,” you hesitated “mostly to clear my head. My shrink down at the VA suggested it.”

“Oh, that’s right.. I forgot - Steve told me but I guess it slipped my mind. A lot o-”

“of new information.”, you finished in unison.

He chuckled and scratched at his neck, making strands the shade of dark rosewood fall and shield his face. The close proximity made your skin tingle.

“May I?”, he gestured toward the open pages “or maybe you can read me something?”

There was something vulnerable there, something sweet and wistful — somber.

You reached for the notebook and scooted closer and Bucky shot up like he had been burned.

You peered up at him.

“Why do you do that?”

“I- fuck, I’m sorry. I-”

“Why? I mean I’ve seen you.. even when Steve touches you, you flinch.”

Bucky looked taken aback for a second but then seemed to slump, a tired exhale leaving his lungs like it had been forced out of him.

“It’s that obvious?”

You backed up a bit.

“Tell me.”

“Why do you care?”

“Because I do.”

He looked hesitant for a second.

“I haven’t been touched in a.. positive way, in a long time. Truth be told I’m starved for it, all I want is to feel that connection, I mean it’s all I dream about when it’s not the nightmares.. but-”

“Then why?”

“- but when it’s sudden, when I’m not ready for it. It burns. It’s too much, too fast and it’s unsettling. I hate it. It’s like getting what you want but not on your own terms and the sensation on my skin gets overwhelming.. and.. fuck, yeah I think that’s the gist of it,” he wrought his hands together, looking away “I’m sorry, I’m still adjusting.”

He looked so beautiful, even like this. Even in pain and confused his presence took up the room, changed the atmosphere into whatever it was that was Bucky. The scent of him in your nostrils, bergamot and cedar, and the heavy weight of him dipping your bed, and you so badly wanted to inch closer, to reach out and touch, feel if he’s as warm as he looks, giving him something of that that he craves, being a balm to soothe, to hush, to lull.

“So.. if you were ready for it?”

His eyes blinked up to yours.

You got closer, sitting on your knees with an outstretched hand, close enough to touch without in fact doing so.

“…if you know I’m going to touch you, if you can.. ready yourself then maybe, it won’t feel like that?”

His eyes got soft then, filled with something you couldn’t find a word for, and he turned on the bed to face you fully.

“That’s very sweet of you, doll— mind if I call ya that?” you shook your head “mind reading me some of your texts?— is it poetry?”

You smiled, shy and full lipped.

Spreading open the book, you flipped to where you had been writing last and pulled it into his lap, careful as to not touch.

“Here.. it’s kind of morbid but..”

“Yeah, hush. No self deprecation, that’s my thing. Let me make up my own mind about it.”

You chuckled but conceded.

“MJ?”

“Mary jane.”

You chuckled at the confusion still present on his face.

“Marijuana.”

“Ah.”

You looked on closely, nervous as he read once, twice, three times.

“You hate it,” you said “I get it, it’s a bit extreme and maybe not what you’re used to but it’s just my thoughts going haywire and shit you know a-”

“I like it.”

“Huh?”

“I like it. Is this how you feel? The PR thing? Everything?”

“Basically, but it’s just thoughts, words on paper. Emotions. It’s still worth it.”

He nodded, going back to read it a fourth time.

“It’s unusual, I’ll give you that but, it’s .. beautiful in it’s strange way.. and very- very relatable,” he looked up, face suddenly so earnest and open it was almost startling “especially the last part,” he huffed and a hint of bitterness momentarily crept into his voice “I can safely say I know what it’s like to feel like there’s a flaw in my code..”

A breath. Shaking himself out of it.

“I don’t really write myself but, I can see myself in this. In your texts. A lot of this- I mean I’ve had similar thoughts,” he smiled.

The hard air around you grew thick, hanging around your heads like cottony molasses. You looked up from your text, eyes scanning the shape of him. Something urgent took root somewhere close to your solar plexus.

“Can I touch you?”

He was stock still for a moment or two, but then he nodded.

You scooted a little bit closer, your movements slow and cautious; tentative. The back of his hand was a contrast of soft and rough against your palm. Soft hairs and raised scars.

A deep yet quiet groan sounded from somewhere buried inside him — you looked up just in time to see something in his features breaking.

“Is it too much? Should I stop? I -”

He shook his head.

“No.. please.”

Your heart sped up — a cassette set on fast forward. You opened the cuffs of his sleeve and set to gingerly and very slowly roll them up to his elbow. His breathing turned heavy and deep: an odd mixture of tension coupled with relief.

Stretching your fingers you splayed your hand out over his skin, calmly stroking: his hand, wrist, forearm. You were so close now, so near, the warmth of him was a tangible thing against your exposed skin. A crescendo beat hammered in your chest.

“Can I kiss you?”

Surprised, you met his gaze. Abalone shells, sea glass beneath water, thunderclouds and liquid silver and every other simile that came to mind and none of them did his eyes justice. A chilled tingle enveloped your skull and flooded down your spine. You nodded.

“Let me.”

You slowly moved, put your hand on the side of his neck, revelling in the sigh you got in return, gasping when he mirrored you.

His lips were dry, plump, warm. A soft cushion against your own. You opened to let his lower lip in between yours, letting your tongue taste for the first time. Salt and metal, twilight and heat.

His metal arm came up behind your back, pulling you in with a metallic whirr until you were flush against him, and you gave out a sharp whine.

He immediately let go.

“Shit! Did I scare ya? I didn’t think—”

You blinked at him, then heat flushed your cheeks.

“Yeah, no.. not what happened, Barnes.”

He quirked an eyebrow, and you simply grabbed his arm and put it back around you, allowing a tiny moan escape your lips to get your point across.

The chuckle that elicited from him was deep and disbelieving.

“Better than scared I guess.”

“You guess?”

He grinned and surged back to claim your mouth; the smile growing against your lips genuine enough to taste.

So a certain someone was egging me to write again after a throwaway comment on one of her posts (don’t get mistaken, I’m easy to convince and I love it when people’s so enthusiastic XD). And then the other night I couldn’t sleep and in a bout of madness I started writing. Get prepared for a crack fic with a side dish of crack.

The case of the missing boots

Ah, he had missed this! That sense of freedom and dread when you walked alone the treacherous paths of the Zone was strangely addictive.

Technically speaking his office on Cordon's outpost was also part of the Zone, but it was a watered down version of the real experience. Degtyarev enjoyed its harshness to a certain degree, and most of all he enjoyed seeing his old friends, the camaraderie between stalkers who unite to survive the Zone's cruel tricks. The excuse of meeting up with Strelok was only that, an excuse. There was no urgent intel to gather as he may have hinted to the newly promoted Major Tarasov before leaving him in charge of Cordon; he just wanted to get out and check on his old friend. And conveniently enough, the designated meeting point was Yanov.

So Degtyarev dug out his old stalker gear, since he had the feeling trotting around in military uniform wouldn't garner him much sympathy, and set on an adventure of his own. Just like the old times!

After a few days of travel he finally arrived to Yanov. He was pleased to note that not much had changed in all this time. The marshes were still full of mutants, Topol was still running errands for the scientists, and the echo of the fights between Duty and Freedom patrols was still the background music no one had asked for. It was like coming home!

Degtyarev was ecstatic nobody treated him differently, even if everyone and their mothers knew he was now in charge of the Cordon outpost. It was refreshing to treat with people that didn't immediately answer with a salute and a Yes sir, even if they were total assholes like Snag. What possessed Degtyarev to talk with him he had no idea, the stalker always irritated him. But meeting Vano, and Strider, and Zulu and many others was nice. Which is why he felt so betrayed when he woke up next morning and saw his boots were missing.

Last night he retired late to Yanov Station's basement, found a mattress in which to fall on, took his boots off and slept like the dead until the next morning. And then he saw his boots weren't waiting for him where he left them. In fact the boots weren't anywhere: not in that spot, nor in his backpack, nor stashed in some dark corner of the station. This wasn't a mere prank, it was theft. And Degtyarev didn't like thieves, so he did the only sensible thing he could think of: he closed off Yano Station until he found the culprit.

After strong-arming both Loki and Shulga to cooperate, all of Yanov's stalkers were assembled on the main bar area, while a barefoot, sock clad Degtyarev ambled up and down like he was trying to dig a trench in the floor.

"You'll be wondering why I gathered you all," Degtyarev addressed the sea of faces in front of him. Some looked still sleepy, others curious and some already bored.

"Because your boots disappeared!" Someone on the back row shouted. Of course it was Yar, nosy old bugger always knew what was going on.

All the stalkers swivelled at once to look at Snag, who had the gall to look affronted by their reaction. "Don't look at me! Why would I want a pair of stinky boots? Besides, I don't go around stealing..." The last part was added like an afterthought, lacking conviction.

A murmur of dissent spread around, with some stalkers airing their grievances and suspicions about Snag, until Degtyarev smashed his palm against the nearest table to him.

"Unless all those things disappeared last night too, now's not the time for it!"

A stalker in the crowd raised his hand, like a student asking for his teacher. Degtyarev looked at him. "Yes, Mitay?"

"Where and when did you last see the boots?"

Thank god someone was finally taking this seriously. "Last night when I left them by the side of my mattress."

"You take out your boots to sleep?"

That question, asked by someone he didn't identify, quickly sparked a debate amongst the stalkers, who were divided in two camps: those who always slept with their boots on and those who took the boots out when they weren't sleeping outside.

"Well if you left your boots lying around unprotected it's normal someone stole them, you were tempting fate dude." This stellar opinion was voiced by a loner famous for his deals with Jack’s bandit group. He didn’t quite remember his name now, but it didn’t matter because Degtyarev wasn’t planning on speaking with him ever again.

"Are you saying he had it coming because he was tempting thieves, leaving the boots by his side while he slept?" Vano squinted his eyes at him like he couldn't believe his ears, and Degtyarev shared that sentiment.

"Only a thief would think like that!" Gavrilenko said, and soon people started to point his fingers at the other man as the boot thief.

"I was only saying he should have been more careful!"

Degtyarev decided to intervene before things got out of hand. As entertaining as it was to see everyone ganging up on that idiot, it wasn't conducive to finding his boots. "Enough! In the future think before you open your mouth. Or better yet, don’t speak again."

"Degtyarev," Strider used the recently achieved quiet to speak up for the first time. "This morning I heard Trapper talking with Hawaiian about boots."

Somehow his emotionless delivery of it made the sentence sound strangely accusing. Degtyarev looked at the gobsmacked and unusually quiet trader to see what he had to say in his defence.

"That's not what it looks like!" Hawaiian squeaked, looking pleadingly at Trapper. "He asked me if I had any boots to sell him!"

"Yeah. Mine's are half melted, I stepped into a Fruit Punch yesterday," the hunter confirmed Hawaiian's story.

And they were back to square one. This was getting nowhere. At this rate he would never find his boots. He'd have to go meet Strelok barefoot... Or apparently Strelok decided to come for him. The small stalker appeared from the corridor leading to Bonesetter's office, like it was the most normal thing in the world to pop inside a supposedly closed off building.

"Strelok?" Degtyarev was pretty sure he wasn't imagining it, but to say he was surprised would be an understatement. Strelok just appeared out of nowhere carrying a can of energy drink.

"What's up dude." He greeted him nonchalantly and took a swig from his drink.

"How did you get in?" Degtyarev couldn't be more confused if he tried.

"The back door."

The back door. The fucking back doors. Shit, he felt like moron! How come that when securing the station no one remembered to check the back doors? In his defence, neither Loki nor Shulga thought about it either.

Strelok left the can on the table and looked at the gaggle of assembled stalkers. "What's going on?"

Before he could answer that, something impacted against the main door with a rather noisy CLONK. The reaction was immediate, all the stalkers drew their weapons and aimed at the door, waiting for the next attack. And waited.

And when he was bored to wait Degtyarev opened the double doors and poked his head out. A lone boot was lying in the ground right in front of the entrance. What the hell?

There was a rustle of leaves and then something dark and boot shaped came flying from behind a nearby bush and hit Degtyarev in the head, accompanied by a cry of "A NU CHEEKI BREEKI I V DAMKE!"

At least a dozen stalkers reacted to such unmistakeable cry and went out in response to it, eager to face their enemy once more.

"Oh blyat! Run Vanya run!" One of them yelled.

Two guys dressed in worn tracksuit pants and wearing balaclavas ducked out from behind a bush and started running like the devil was after them.

"I fucking told ya this was a bad idea!" Complained the same one as before.

"You dared me to do it Mitka!"

Strelok aimed his SGI-5k to the bandits feet and shot to the ground they had stood moments ago, making them yell obscenities and run faster. On his part Degtyarev stared at his boots lying on the dust and tried to find solace in the fact that surely the day couldn't get any weirder.

5K Trainer: The Story Begins

This mission is the same as S1M1 of the main app. The story is identical, aside from some minor changes and/or additions to the dialogue, which are indicated by italics.

HELICOPTER PILOT: So you'll see the township as we loop around. Not much more than a few fences to keep the zoms out. Tiny little island of humanity. I just don't know how they live like that. Well, I guess they won't be living like that much longer.

So, I expect you're not allowed to say what you're being dropped into the township for, huh? Nah, I thought not. I know how it works. They don't even tell you until you get there.

[static] Abel Township, Abel Township, this is Jolly Alpha Five Niner from Mullins Military Base. We're five miles out, approaching from the east at 1,100 feet, bringing in med supplies, some backpacks, shelters, and a temporary loan of one of our people. Abel Township – Jolly Five Niner, requesting permission to land.

RADIO OPERATOR: [static] Yeah, got that... uh, I mean, uh, roger that. You're clear to, um... [clears throat] yeah, you can - come on in.

HELICOPTER PILOT: Roger, Abel Township. Heading down now.

I can see as clear as day we haven't got half the supplies we usually bring. Yeah, I know. You don't know anything. Project Greenshoot? Need-to-know basis? [static] Listen, if you're alive, if there's anyone alive, this is Sam Yao, from Abel Township. I'm just the... I'm just the radio operator, man, I'm not supposed to handle this stuff! [static] You've come down in a nest of hostiles. They've heard the noise, they're coming! There are - thirty? No, forty - aw, crap! Uh, you're only safe path is towards the tower. You should be able to see that from where you are. If there's anyone alive there, just move. [static] Move!

SAM YAO: Wow, there's... there's someone alive down there! Hey, can you hear me? ... No answer. But still, they're on the move. Heading for the tower, just like I said. Okay... helicopter person. If you can hear me, you're doing great. The main group's behind you, and you're going to come out of this forest soon, but there's a... yeah, I-I can't think of a phrase that's not "small army of zombies". Sorry, don't do so well under massive pressure.

There's a... well, one of those, directly to the east of the trees. So, if you head more towards the old saw mill - you should be able to see its massive red signs from where you are... man, look at that, they're changing direction! They can... You can hear me! [laughs] Okay, okay, we can keep you safe. It's cool, it's cool, we can bring you in. [a whisper in the background] No, we can't ask them that! They might be injured!

MAXINE MYERS: Well, all the more reason to ask them that! This is Doctor Myers, only medic here at Abel Township. Lord knows I'm sorry to ask you this, but your route will take you almost past the old hospital. We know there are medical kits still there from the first wave of infection - if you could pick up even one or two, that would help us.

SAM YAO: It's too dangerous! You know what happened to Runner Five!

MAXINE MYERS: The zoms have all followed the noise of the crash!

SAM YAO: But what about whoever fired that rocket launcher?

MAXINE MYERS: If someone wants to kill that messenger, taking an unusual route will make it even harder, not easier! I don't want to be hard-headed, but everyone in this township earns their keep. You should be able to see the Robinson Hospital now. One of the buildings - Gryphon Tower - it's the tallest in the abandoned city, and if you can't find anything... we might not be able to let you in when you get here.

SAM YAO: Okay, okay... Man, that's great, you're making good time. No broken legs, I guess. [laughs] Hey, uh, listen... I'm gonna call you Runner Five. Um, just 'cause... well, I don't know your name, and we just lost a runner, in that same hospital you're running through now. She was so fast, really funny, and clever. Me and her, we sort of... [sighs] She was amazing. But hey! You could be our new Runner Five! If you make it back alive...

Yeah, um, the runners are pretty important to keeping us going here. Any fuel we have goes to working the generators, and the truth is, if you've got two legs and you can go above a slow shamble, you'll be able to stay out the zoms' way, am I right?

Yeah, okay, your pace is good, but, um, maybe head through the ground floor of the hospital. There's a little swarm gathering in the parking lot I don't like the look of, and um... Yeah, yeah, that's good... You could even pick up anything interesting you pass. We think there might be some... well, we sent the old Runner Five there looking for some file the Doc's interested in, so uh, you know, if you find anything official-looking lying around, just bring it home.

SAM YAO: Hey, there you are! I've got you on camera now. Great to see you, even though you're kinda blurry. [laughs] Uh, what's that you're carrying? Look at this, Doc - Runner Five picked up something in the hospital.

MAXINE MYERS: Is that the Centers for Disease Control file?

SAM YAO: What's that?

MAXINE MYERS: Runner Five, I don't say this lightly - that box could be worth your life to protect. Don't drop it.

SAM YAO: What is it?

MAXINE MYERS: Oh, it might be nothing, it might be everything.

SAM YAO: So, a pretty narrow window of definition.

MAXINE MYERS: What's that shadow over there?

SAM YAO: Aw, aww, no! This was what - when we sent her out, this was what happened! They're following you, Runner Five. The swarm from the car park, they're following you! Now, move as fast as you can!

[zombies moan]

SAM YAO: They're so fast. Why are they so fast? Runner Five? Runner Five, keep going.

MAXINE MYERS: Runner Five, you're not far from the gates now. If you can keep going, we'll send some people with guns out to meet you. Only one zombie is close to reaching you, just keep going as fast as you're able!

[zombie moans]

SAM YAO: Oh, God... it's her. I can see her... it's Alice. It's the old Runner Five. She's the one chasing you. She's... she's still wearing her headset! She's...

RUNNER SEVEN: [interrupts] Runner Five, it's Runner Seven here, head of runners. The doctor's told me you found something useful in the hospital. We're sending out a couple of people to bring you in. Don't look back, she's right behind you!

[gunfire]

ABEL GUARD: This way!

SAM YAO: They're going to shoot her. I-I can't watch, I don't want to...

MAXINE MYERS: It's what she would have wanted Sam, you know it is. She wouldn't have wanted to live like this.

ABEL GUARD: We've got her covered!

[gunfire stops]

SAM YAO: Raise the gates... Raise the gates!

[gate siren blaring, and the mechanical sounds of the gates raising]

VARIOUS UNIDENTIFIED VOICES: Welcome! - The Major will want to see you when she gets back. - Hey, great to see a new face! - Want some water? - What were you doing in that helicopter, anyway? - Did you bring any food? Any canned food, dried food? - Hey, you've picked up some med packs!

SAM YAO: Hey! Good to see you in the flesh... the totally-unbroken, skin-not-bitten-by-zombies flesh, right? Step back, step back everyone, don't crowd! Give Runner Five some space! Can't take in so many new faces right now.

Introduction

Hi!

I’m fat. Probably in denial obese. This is the start of my journey towards healthy living.

Head: Weirdly small

Location: Los Angeles, California

Mission: Stop shopping in the plus-size section.

Other Stats: Empath, Extrovert, Ennegram 7, Anxiety and Mild Depression.

A lot of my weight stems from emotional eating or eating to suppress xyz. I gained the majority of my weight when I was 18 and had difficulty handling a bipolar music teacher. Instead of speaking up and saying his yelling tactics and isolating methods were not healthy for me, I took to fast food for comfort and respite. I was twenty when I lost nearly 100lbs through unhealthy eating for the man I fell deeply in love for and ended up gaining most of that weight back when I found out he was dating another woman for the duration of our relationship. My personal life has been anything but stable with several moves to Orlando, Juneau, Northern Ireland, and Switzerland. For about six years I sat pretty comfortable at 260 and fluctuate 20 or so lbs per season. Mom is fat, Dad is fat, Brother is getting fat, and even the dog is getting a little chubby. We are not an active family and tend to celebrate through food instead of activities or objects. Cheeseburgers are our jam and Kale enters the house about twice a year.

2019 was a full year. I lived in Northern Ireland, earned a Master’s Degree in English Literature, published a book, moved back to the States. Which poses the question: Does one’s environment need to be stable in order to lose weight? Since Brexit is a bitch and I’m laughably broke, I decided to move back in with Mom and Dad. That’s right gentlemen, I’m fat, anxious, AND broke. Don’t all come at once.

2020 came with a decision to change. I started cooking for the family and focused on clean eating. This worked for a little while until the fast-food temptation took over once more. To try and balance out the fast food (why are you so delicious Chic Fil A) I bought a bike. Except cycling in Los Angeles is about as sane as a squirrel running across the 405. My chubby love handles got catcalls, swore at, and was close to being hit three times. All this in two weeks. After that, I went to a free-spinning class. The culture was awesome and oh man, did I sweat. Spinning is often done in a smallish room with a wall-to-wall mirror. The music is pumping loud (probably so you don’t hear your panting and wheezing). Eventually, you get into a group beat to the point where your shoulders are bouncing with the collective- left, right, left, right. Boom Boom Pow. I didn’t not like it but I wasn’t in love with it. Plus, it was a smidgen out of the way and the schedule didn’t perfectly align with my schedule.

Lesson number one: Have your work out routine work with your schedule and is close to home and/or work.

The week after spinning I abandoned the keto diet due to french fries and ate quite a lot. The mentality of being 28, living at home, not having a job was getting to me. It was time to join a gym. I felt some sort of magnetic pull towards crossfit, specifically Woodland Hills Crossfit. I did crossfit in Juneau for about four months before quitting. I wasn’t seeing results and hated having to zoom downtown to workout with people who were half my weight and twice my strength. Crossfit Woodland Hills was always in the peripheral vision. Coming home from the freeway, on the way to the mall. Convenient? Check. Before entering the box, anxiety decided to send an email first. I really didn’t want to enter a gym that was solely focused on competition nor did I want to be a part of a gym where I was the only one who had fat flopping around. Crossfit Woodland Hills answered my email professionally and helpfully. They were open to modifying the workouts to my level and were open to not screaming at me military style. I decided to go on a Monday night at 6:15pm.

Aimee was my fitness coach and she did the perfect combination of motherly love and fatherly wisdom. The people in the workout were a combination of Hercules to overworked Mom to me, The Hunchback of Woodland Hills. I finished the workout. Barely, not pretty, and a sweat outline profiled where I worked out like a crime scene. But I did it! I. Did. It! The next day I could barely move. Every muscle hurt, even reaching for the french fries was a disaster. Getting out of the chair was about as painful as being stabbed by 17,000 needles. I made a promise to myself that I would go three times a week for three weeks and if the enviornment wasn’t suitable, I would find a way out.

Each work-out consists of warm-up, stretch, explanation of the movements, and a timed work out, usually 20-35 minutes, a warm down, sanitizing of equiptment, and answering of any questions the group has. Sometimes petting dogs is involved, sometimes dancing, often times dying on the floor. Each Workout of the Day (or WOD in Crossfit lingo) is different and focuses on different body parts. As I am doing Crossfit Cardio instead of full on Crossfit, the workout is cardio (usually on a fan bike), a gym move (burpees or situps or pullups or some other unique way to torture me) and a weight move (dumbbell squats, arm curls, the works). All of these moves can be modified to a work out level that is comfortable for you. For example, I’m used to carrying around 20lbs of books around so I am comfortable around the 20lb weight. The mom in the group who is really good at stamina can kill it on the bike but sticks to low weights such as 5lb or 10lbs. The gym rat, who I swear is at Crossfit three times a day, often can go to the Rx (as prescribed) weight. They never go above the weight. There is no ‘beast’ mode. It’s modified to the Rx and below. Not the Rx and above. The Gym rat is often times dying just as much as I am at the end.

The first three classes I could barely move the next day. The next three classes I recovered more quickly because of recommendations made by the coaches: get a foam roller, drink lots of water, get some sleep. The next three classes were more of a mental game than a physical game. I was upping the weights and getting comfortable with the movements but one big thing started happening: I was gaining weight. Both on the scale and on the waistline. Some things to note: my alcohol consumption *cough* sugar *cough* increased, I started eating a lot more ice cream *cough* stupid period *cough* and I decreased healthy food in effort to maintain under my calorie weight. Except for one day, I was under calorie intake. For the record, I use myfitnesspal to keep track of calories. Cue obsessive google searching. Phrases such as, “Does crossfit have you gain weight first?” “How long does it take to lose weight?” “How long does it take to lose fat?” Whomp Whomp Whomp. It’s week four and monday’s class added some fun because I brought my brother along. My brother, who could complete a 5k without training in under 30 minutes, who can often go weeks staying stationary and then go on a 14 mile hike with no sweat, copped out after two rounds in the workout. Okay, not going to lie, this made me feel 40% superior because a) I completed the workout and b) I decided at the last minute to do 20lbs instead of 15lbs. The Rx was 25lbs for women. My brother explained that he misheard the instructions and went all out on the bike in one round instead of easing it across the 12 rounds.

At week four, I’m floundering a bit. Do I:

a) Continue going three times a week but upping my weight count?

b) Go four times a week and maintain the same weight count?

c) Go Three times a week and try to focus on my diet?

Understand, random internet reader, I am in no way a professional nor am I even an expert. I am meerly just using this as a platform to rant out my thoughts and hope that you find something useful throughout this read. Just remember, you are not alone. Losing weight is not easy. It’s okay not to be perfect.
