Monstrous Regiment o il potere di un paio di brache.
Oggi, 28 Aprile 2024 è il Pratchett day.

Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson
Talk about a book that punches you in the face, steals your lunch money, and leaves you gaping like a fish, asking yourself what just happened. This is a fantastic introspection on a modern magical matriarchy that is stunning. Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson follows four witches in the UK who grew up friends, fought in a magical war together, and largely have gone their separate ways in adulthood. Helena is the priestess of HMRC, with a young daughter and a white tory attitude. Elle has given up her life as a healer to become a stay-at-home mother to her two children. Niamh is a countryside vet. Finally, after being fed up with the close-minded practices of the HMRC Leonie has founded her own inclusive Coven, where being black and a lesbian is not a problem. When oracles in the HMRC predict a great danger to come after the discovery of a powerful teen, their lives will drastically reorient. Even in a world where the future is foretold, fates can always change with the smallest choices. The question is, will these four be able to avoid calamity, or will the choices they make domino into disaster? In this version of London, the witches' coven and the warlocks cabal work for the British government in a secret. The world is unaware of the existence of magic, and the magic users who can heal, read minds, predict the future, and call on the elements do their best to keep it that way. These systems are on the precipice of large changes, prompted by the magical institution's moral rigidity. The book challenges rigid notions of gender and explores the consequences of disrespecting others’ bodily autonomy. The place of trans women in the witch’s coven is a primary point of conflict in the book. I cannot imagine it being explored better. The book has compassion for trans women and trans youth and the characters will quite literally move the earth to protect them. Now, the female friendship dynamics in this book are messy and I absolutely love it. Capturing the feeling of growing out of your friendships or growing around your childhood friendships is not an easy thing. Even without communicating telepathically, characters know with a look when something is wrong. They know what to fix, and what to leave alone. More importantly, they show the ways you have blindspots for people you have grown up loving. The fact that they are brilliantly talented witches with complex emotional and personal lives is simply icing on top of the cake. You will know what I mean when I say I will actively die if anyone harms Holly and Theo. I could say more about how I absolutely adore their character arcs, interactions, and overall existence, but I will not because you have to witness it. Considering there is another book in the series that may be just as deadly as this one, I will need all the help I can get. If you are a fan of British workplace fantasy books like Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s Good Omens or Daniel O'Malley’s The Rook but are looking for something a bit queerer and more witchy, this is the book for you. I need to let you know right now there are TERFs in the novel so please take proper care as you read. I would also like to say I think Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson is a wonderful book that will take the world by storm if we let it.
Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson, is on sale today, May 31, 2022. I would like to thank Penguin Random House for providing the ARC of Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson in exchange for my honest review.

Out of Time by David Klass
Today I am sharing my long overdue review of Out Of Time by David Klass #davidklass @PenguinUKBooks #books #bookreview #outoftime #bookblog #thriller
Today on jenmedsbookreviews.com I’m sharing my thoughts on Out of Time, an environmental themed thriller from David Klass. It’s one I’ve had on my Netgalley list for far too long, much to my shame, and I’m wondering now why I left it so long to read. My thanks to the publisher for the copy for review, even if I did end up buying my own copy later anyway (it’s the guilt thing, you know?). Here’s…

REVIEW
The Traitor by Ava Glass
Alias Emma #2
Action-packed thrill-ride from beginning to end ~ It had no trouble jumping into book two without reading the first in the series though wouldn’t mind reading it, too, someday.
What I liked:
* Emma Makepeace: works for The Agency - a small British governmental intelligence group, secretive-can’t share anything about her work with friends or family, father was a spy, bright, dedicated, lethal, possible adrenaline junkie, sometimes made decisions and acted in ways I knew wouldn’t work out well for her, intriguing and filled with potential
* Charles Ripley: her boss, has worked for The Agency for many years, wise, seasoned, keeps information close, no family, not sure if he has friends, seems to care about Emma…as much as he is able to, dedicated to his work,
* Zach: IT specialist and gadget guru – want to know more about him
* Martha: disguise specialist – big personality that may be explored more in the future
* Others introduced that might have parts in future books
* Wondering how spies ever manage to have personal lives or fall in love AND if Emma will find someone to be with
* Thinking about how much of what Emma did in the story would be doable in real life – even though it makes a riveting read – was it realistic?
* The plot, pacing, settings, twists and turns, and how it was all tied up at the end
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about the characters willing to do what they did for money…all of them
* Thinking about how lonely the lives of spies must be
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to Penguin and Moonflower Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.

THE TRAITOR

Fast, furious, and totally addictive…
…meet Britain’s female Bond!
From the glittering shores of St. Tropez to the sun-drenched streets of Barcelona, The Traitor is former spy insider Ava Glass’s high-octane thriller set in the billionaires’ playground of the glamourous French Riviera.
A dead body in a padlocked suitcase, chemical weapons, and an MI5 traitor selling secrets to the Russians sets the scene for British agent Emma Makepeace’s thrill packed mission on the med.
Emma must go undercover, working below deck as a crew member on luxury super yacht The Eden. Setting sail from St Tropez, The Eden’s Russian owner and his bikini-clad supermodel girlfriend are under surveillance by MI6, suspected of procuring illegal weapons from the UK.
Out at sea with no escape, Emma must tread carefully as she races to uncover who the traitor on board the oligarch’s yacht is.  Witnessing a murder and with her cover wearing increasingly thin, one false move and she could be dead. As the hunt intensifies, Emma must find the traitor before he finds her.
From a glittering yacht party to a powerboat chase over deadly rocks, and from living below deck to being hunted through the streets of Barcelona, never before has the turquoise sea and golden sands of the Rivera been so deadly.
If you love The White Lotus, you will devour Ava Glass’s second novel The Traitor - and fans of Ava Glass’ 2020 debut The Chase (which is currently shortlisted for Best Spy Novel at the 2023 Crime Writer Awards) will not be disappointed.
A massive new talent in British fiction, Ava Glass’s storytelling is complex and finely crafted, combining twisting plotlines, intelligent dialogue and ambiguous characters, all skilfully brought together in an epic climax. Never before has spy fiction been so nail-bitingly real.

I'm excited to announce that I have signed a book deal with Del Rey at Penguin Random House in the US and Michael Joseph in the UK for my debut novel, Alchemised, a standalone dark fantasy set in a war-torn world of necromancy and alchemy, in which a healer with amnesia is taken as a prisoner of war and must fight to protect her lost memories and the secrets hidden among them. It will grapple with themes of trauma and survival, legacy, and the way that love can drive one to extreme darkness, and it is, as you may be able to tell, a reimagined version of Manacled.
I know I’ve been rather quiet about my publishing journey, and a lot of that has been because I didn’t want to spark any concerns or worry that I might be abruptly taking away a story that is such a deep part of myself and that I know has meant so much to so many people. This process has unfolded very slowly and quietly because I have tried to be mindful as I could be in every step of the way.
As most of you know, I have been a reader in fandom long before I ever began to write. Fanfiction is incredibly special to me, and I have tried to do my best not to undermine its legal protection or allow my works to do so either. During the last several years, there has been a growing issue with illegal sales of Manacled, putting both me and the incredible community that shares fanfiction freely in legal jeopardy.
After consulting with the OTW as well as other lawyers, it has grown clear that as a transformative writer I have limited options in protecting my stories from this kind of exploitation, but I wasn’t sure what to do; I didn’t want to just take the story down, in part because I worried that might only exacerbate the issue, but I didn’t know what other options I had. Then I suddenly had this idea of alchemy, which was peculiarly appropriate; an academic world filled with unique transmutational abilities, and a necromantic war against people who had discovered the secrets of immortality, and I could see a path to reimagining the story while still holding on to as much of the original spirit of Manacled as possible.
I began redrafting the concept privately around Christmas 2022, and then as if the universe had aligned, just as I was finishing, Caitlin Mahony and Rivka Bergman of WME reached out to me and were delightfully enthusiastic about concepts and ideas for my new alchemical world and the ways I had reimagined the story.
I'm thrilled to be working with Emily Archbold, my visionary editor at Del Rey, along with Rebecca Hilsdon at Michael Joseph in the UK, to polish this novel for publication in Fall 2025. I feel uniquely privileged that both my publishing teams are familiar with Manacled and understand how special it is to so many people, and how important it is that this reimagining captures the same spirit while also having its own wings.
Manacled is not going anywhere at present. It will remain online throughout 2024, at which point it will, if you’ll pardon the pun, alchemise for 2025 and be removed from AO3.
I'm so thankful to all of you who've enjoyed my works, and I hope that I can continue to rely on your support as I take my next steps as an author.

New publishing announcement!
Hi guys!
I know it’s been a long time since there’s been news about The Wicked Powers. I’ve actually been sitting on information for a long time because I was not allowed to talk about it. It was making me pull out all my hair, so I am super glad to be able to share the following announcement with you: The Wicked Powers is scheduled for publication, and will be published by Walker Books in the UK and Random House in the US.
There’s a bunch more about this announcement, including the announcement of a brand-new YA romantasy series I’ll be doing called In Fire Foretold. That will be published by Pan Macmillan in the UK (same people who published Sword Catcher) and by Random House in the US.
I know there will be a lot of questions about what my schedule is, why things are coming out when they are, whether I have anything coming out next year (Yes, The Ragpicker King, the sequel to Sword Catcher, and also for those who participated in the Kickstarter, those four books) and the overall future of everything Shadowhunter-related. So I will be doing followup announcements to address all that stuff, but first, here are both press release from my publishers in the US and then in the UK with all the info!

GLOBALLY BESTSELLING FANTASY PHENOMENON CASSANDRA CLARE TO PUBLISH  FINAL TRILOGY IN THE ‘SHADOWHUNTER CHRONICLES’  AND NEW DUOLOGY WITH ALFRED A. KNOPF BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS  First book in THE WICKED POWERS to release in Spring 2026
(New York, NY, April 5, 2024)—Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, will publish five new books from #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cassandra Clare, whose novels have sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, been translated into 43 languages, and published in more than 60 countries. The new publications will begin in Spring 2026 with the first book in THE WICKED POWERS trilogy, the sixth and final series in Clare’s 23-book, young adult fantasy franchise The Shadowhunter Chronicles. Also slated for publication with Knopf is a brand-new YA romantasy duology, IN FIRE FORETOLD. The news was announced today by Melanie Nolan, VP and Publisher, Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, who acquired North American rights from Suzie Townsend and Joanna Volpe of New Leaf Literary & Media in a highly competitive auction. Michelle Frey, Senior Executive Editor, Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, will edit both series.
Cassandra Clare mesmerized readers across the globe with the publication of City of Bones (2007), the first book in the Mortal Instruments series, and was quickly dubbed the “New Queen of Fantasy” by the Wall Street Journal. The Mortal Instruments became the basis for the far-reaching Shadowhunter Chronicles, an intricately drawn world that has seen global success and has been adapted into both a feature film and television show. The books follow the Shadowhunters, a secretive race of humans born with angel blood, whose mission is to eliminate the demons that plague the Earth. Knopf’s first publishing collaboration with Clare, THE WICKED POWERS (Spring 2026), will follow Kit Herondale, Ty Blackthorn, and Drusilla Blackthorn from The Dark Artifices series as they are drawn into the final massive conflict between the demons and the angels.
IN FIRE FORETOLD is a pulse-pounding YA romantasy duology set in a new world with entirely new characters. The story centers a young woman who must learn to control her dangerous magical abilities in order to save her kingdom, all while finding herself torn between two brothers—the kingdom's princes, born to a cursed royal bloodline. The publication date for IN FIRE FORETOLD, as well as news of additional books to come from Cassandra Clare and Knopf, will be announced.
Says Cassandra Clare: "I am delighted to have Knopf and Penguin Random House as my publishers for this last trilogy in the Shadowhunters world. They truly understand what it means—both for the story and for my readers—to wrap up such an epic tale that has been told over so many years. I'm also excited to be launching my next YA series — a kickass portal fantasy that contains a ton of things I love, from a bold and reckless heroine to a magical wasteland filled with terrifying monsters that must be fought, to a love triangle with two very unusual cursed princes. I can't wait for us to bring these stories to the world."
Says Michelle Frey: “Cassandra Clare is a beloved author whose work has a massive following for good reason: she sucks you into a fully imagined world and never lets go until the last, satisfying page. I have long admired Cassie and am thrilled to be working with her on both the delectable final trilogy in the Shadowhunter Chronicles and the heart-stopping new love triangle she has dreamed up with IN FIRE FORETOLD.”
Random House Children’s Books (rhcbooks.com) is the world’s largest English-language children’s trade book publisher. Creating books for toddlers through young adult readers, in all formats from board books to activity books to picture books, novels, and nonfiction, the imprints of Random House Children’s Books bring together award-winning authors and illustrators, world-famous franchise characters, and multimillion-copy series. Random House Children’s Books is a division of Penguin Random House LLC.
UK/AUS/NZ:
Walker Books will publish three new books, the final trilogy in Shadowhunter Chronicles, the first coming in Spring 2026.
Separately, First Ink will publish a brand new YA duology, introducing readers to a fantastical new world of Clare’s creation, filled with enticing new characters and heart-racing action. With sales figures for Cassandra’s novels exceeding 40 million copies worldwide, translated into 43 languages and published in more than 60 countries, these are exciting and major acquisitions for both publishing houses.
Walker will launch THE WICKED POWERS in Spring 2026 with the first book in the trilogy, The Last King of Faerie. THE WICKED POWERS is the final instalment of Clare’s 23-book, young adult fantasy series, Shadowhunter Chronicles.
THE WICKED POWERS (Spring 2026), will follow Kit Herondale, Ty Blackthorn, and Drusilla Blackthorn from The Dark Artifices series as they are drawn into the final massive conflict between the demons and the angels. The novel marks the beginning of the final trilogy in Clare’s globally beloved series.
Cassandra Clare Says about THE WICKED POWERS: "I’m thrilled to be taking this momentous step in the Shadowhunter chronicles with Walker! They published City of Bones in 2007 and now we will be bringing this huge epic to a close together. With their creativity and dedication, I know they’ll do it justice."
Denise Johnstone Burt says: “We at Walker are immensely proud to have been Cassie’s publishers from the very beginning, when City of Bones launched the Shadowhunters into the world. Since then Cassie has become one of the most beloved writers in YA fantasy all over the world, and with very good reason. Her world-building and character portrayal are absolutely second to none and her books never fail to mesmerise her fans. I am delighted that we will be returning to the world of Shadowhunters once again in THE WICKED POWERS, and know Cassie will bring the Chronicles to a conclusion with her trademark brilliance and consummate style.”
First Ink will publish IN FIRE FORETOLD, a pulse-pounding YA romantasy duology set to delight all fans of Cassie Clare. UK and Commonwealth rights were acquired by Samantha Smith, Publisher of First Ink and Macmillan Children’s Books’ Fiction, Non Fiction and Picture Book List, from Danny Baror and Heather Baror-Shapiro at Baror International.  The duology will be a super lead title for First Ink and will launch with a significant multi-channel communications campaign including national media, influencer and fan events [HBS1] and multimedia advertising.
IN FIRE FORETOLD sees the launch of a brand new world and set of entirely new characters for Clare. The story centres on a young woman who must learn to control her dangerous magical abilities in order to save her kingdom, all while finding herself torn between two brothers - the kingdom's princes - born to a cursed royal bloodline.
Cassandra Clare says about IN FIRE FORETOLD: “I’m so excited to be publishing IN FIRE FORETOLD with First Ink. This story contains so many things I love- it’s a portal fantasy that swings between worlds, where the gritty LA streets exist alongside a dangerous magical world filled with deadly monsters - and a uniquely tough heroine who’s ready to do battle on all sides. Not to mention some gorgeous princes with shady pasts. I know how much Pan Macmillan loves fantasy and how well they publish it so I’m thrilled for this partnership."
Samantha Smith, Publisher at First Ink, says: “Cassandra Clare is a phenomenon author who has delighted and surprised her millions of readers across the world for decades now. As a huge fan of both her YA Mortal Instruments series and latest adult fantasy Sword Catcher, I cannot wait for her to turn her formidable pen to a new, heart-stopping series in In the Fire Foretold and could not be more excited to welcome her onto the First Ink list”
Belinda Ioni Rasmussen, Managing Director at Macmillan Children’s Books, says: “ Welcoming Cassandra Clare to First Ink with a brand new fantasy world is very exciting - both for us and her fans.  Her storytelling is second to none and her new duology on our list is the perfect partner series to her brilliant publishing that sits on our Tor list at Pan Macmillan.”
