Pairing: Incubus!Xiumin x reader

Summary: No matter what you do, your eyes will always be drawn to find an angel in the crowd. Or so you thought. But “angel” might not be a compliment for this man… and he might want to show you why.

The warm light of the bar reflects in your glass, making you focus your attention to the little rays it sends dancing on the ceiling. You had agreed to go out with your friends for a fun Friday night but you were starting to get bored. You didn’t really want to participate in any or the games they started playing at your table, nor did anyone seem to mind your absence. They were far too concentrated in getting the cute guy who had been blatantly flirting with all of them since the beginning of the night to take another shot. Some of them obviously drank too much, but you, fortunately, had been careful enough not to get drunk. The downside of this was that you were now the one to check their drinks and to drive them home at the end of the night. 

“Come on, just a last one! I’m paying for you lovely ladies.”

You rolled your eyes. This guy was getting way too touchy with your friends and you didn’t like it. It felt sketchy. You carefully scruted the glasses he passed along the table, but he didn’t do anything suspicious. 

You only let your guard down when he left, leaving his phone number with a wink to the rest of the girls. As they kept talking about how hot he was, you let your eyes roam around the room. You knew you’d find someone special. You always did. Every time, there was someone who felt different, whether it be a glimpse of sadness in their eyes, a mysterious beauty to them or simply someone who exuded charisma. You loved seeing what made them stand out of the crowd, hoping to be that kind of person in someone else’s eyes too. You had settled for a lovely girl, around your age, who looked like she was the happiest person in the room, but as your eyes darted to the left, you saw him.

He looked like an absolute angel. Well at least that’s what came to your mind first. He was sitting down with a group of guys which you assumed were his friends, but he looked different from them. At his table was the guy who had been previously flirting with your friends, along with another who tried to hit on you the second you walked in the bar. While they looked more like the type you’d describe as “bad boys”, he appeared calm and comforting. There was something in his stance, his way of slowly raising his glass to his smiling lips, that drew you in. Dressed in white, it almost felt like he came from another world. The cute, innocent looking guy that you’ definitely want to talk to if he wasn’t with those troublemakers. 

Just as you got lost in analyzing what exactly in his demeanor clashed with the rest of his friends, he turned to you, realizing you had been looking at him, smiled and winked in your direction. Your cheeks flushed red, which was, fortunately for you, impossible to detect under the orange lighting surrounding your table. Even looking away, you felt his gaze on you, perhaps just as intrigued by you as you were by him. 

“Oh? Did y/n spot a cute guy? That Jongin guy talked about him when he was with us earlier. I think he’s called Minseok. Don’t you prefer someone who looks more…..adventurous maybe?” You shushed your friends and tried to distract their attention from the poor guy, who was now being stared at by 6 pairs of eyes.

“Yeah….I prefer the bad boys too.” 

It was kind of true, but you also liked guys who could be gently and caring. Not just heartbreakers. 

“Well, I’m sorry for you and your prince charming y/n but we have to leave. My roommate just texted me that I have to get back to the appartment. Apparently my cat is sick, she’s wating for me to take him to the vet.”

Right. You were the designated driver of 3 of the girls, the other 3 had agreed to call a taxi to spend the night together at one of their apartments. You sighed before nodding. 

“Do I at least have the time to go to the bathroom before we leave? Or is it too much of an emergency.” you didn’t even care about going home, the night having been extremely long for you since you didn’t drink as much as the others.

“Don’t worry, we’ll wait for you outside.”

With that, you left for the corner of the room furthest from the door. You heard a bit of the guys’ conversation as you walked past them and had to resort to mentally punching the guys you heard speaking about your friend. 

“...she’s so hot! I swear she’ll call me tomorrow night if she’s alone….”

“ Bet! I’m sure she won’t call you until next week Jongin, you’re not that irresistible y’know?”

You only heard a glimpse of Minseok’s answer, but you wished you had been closer to hear him longer. His voice sounded just as sweet as his appearance.

“You already know what I think Baek. She’ll call him every day until he gets bored and moves on to someone else. Like always… I’m sure you guys won’t ever settle for one, you always want more than what you have…”

Finally someone who thought like you. You were happy there was at least one reasonable guy in that group to calm the others down. You shot a small glance back at their table before getting in the empty bathroom. When you got out, the guys were gone and you found yourself almost sad to not be able to see Minseok one last time before going. 

You had crossed half of the busier section of the bar when a small light caught your eye. Even though no one had taken your previous table yet, there was something on it. You didn’t remember seeing it before getting up, so you checked what it was, thinking one of the girls might have forgotten it as they left. It was a tiny coin, or at least it looked like one, but it only had one textured side. The other one was totally smooth and you couldn’t help but rub it with your thumb in your pocket as you stepped outside. You later learned that it didn’t belong to any of your friends, but still decided to keep it.

After dropping all three of your friends home, you drove back to your own apartment, playing some music to keep your mind alert. As soon as you dropped your keys on the counter, you headed right to your bathroom, wanting to shower and go to sleep as soon as possible. 

As you got ready to hop in the hot water, your mind raced back to Minseok. There was something about that guy that made you melt. Everything about him seemed soft and gentle and you found yourself wondering what his lips would feel like on yours. 

Oh my god, what the heck am I thinking? He’s just a random guy at a bar. Why am I thinking about it now?

Just that little thought had been enough to turn you on, really turn you on, for some reason. Still wanting to go to sleep fast, you made yourself cum in the shower and quickly climbed in bed. Somehow, it didn’t satisfy you. It didn’t feel enough. You decided to ignore it and managed to fall asleep pretty quickly.

Waking up in the middle of the night wasn’t exactly unusual to you, but this time it felt weird. Weirdly dream-like. You knew it wasn’t a dream, however, because when you looked at your phone and your watch, they both showed the same time. You learned this trick from a friend, who also had realistic dreams. Time is never constant in a dream. So this wasn’t one, but it definitely felt like it was. Especially when you heard a voice speak to you in the dark.

“So? Did I really have that much of an effect on you, angel?”

You had only heard him speak once, but you could recognize the tone of his voice anywhere. It sounded different though, now slightly lower and sickeningly sweet, like he was mocking you. He spoke the last word with such hatred that it almost scared you. You could see better in the dark by now and the sight before you made you gasp.

He was sitting in the chair next to your bedroom door, one leg lazily draped over one of the armrests and the rest of his body leaning on the other. He now wore a chic black shirt, slightly unbuttoned, a black tie hanging loosely around his neck ripped black jeans. 

He smirked as you looked him up and down, the ache you tried to ignore earlier awakening again, even stronger than before.

“I see you have found my amulet. I was hoping it’d choose you since you’re so...interesting.”

You furrowed your brows, “What do you mean ‘interesting’? Why are you here? How did you even get into my house?”

He got up from the chair, chuckling while he walked toward you.

“I saw the way you looked at me and I knew you were different. The fact that my amulet chose you confirms that. You have a very rich soul y/n. Besides, you called me” Your eyes widened at the mention of your name.

“Wait, I didn’t call you! And how do you know-” He cut you off as he reached the edge of your bed.

“As for why I’m here...that’s an interesting question coming from the girl who moans a stranger’s name in her sleep. You called me and what a fool would I have been if I didn’t immediately come here to help you out.” 

He was so close to you, his face merely inches from yours. You didn’t know what pushed you to close your eyes but you did and he immediately connected his lips to yours. You felt yourself melt in his kiss, as if part of your soul merged with him to make you his. This is so crazy. It couldn’t really be happening, right? I’m dreaming. It’s just a really hot dream. Fuck, why am I getting so turned on by this?

You couldn’t think straight, wanting to feel more of him even if you knew this shouldn’t be happening, if it really was. He deepened the kiss before ghosting his hands on the skin of your sides, under the oversized t-shirt you had gone to sleep in. When you gasped at the sudden contact, he pulled away with a satisfied expression painted on his features. That’s when you saw them. Two little points darting out of his hair.

“You think I'm still as cute as earlier? Hmm? You wanted a bad boy, you'll get even better, precious: a demon.”

Your head fell back as his lips travelled on the skin of your neck. He knew what you wanted: as if reading your mind, he took care of your shirt, exposing your chest to the cold air of the night. 

“There’s a few things you have to know though, precious.” He took one of your nipples into his mouth, circling his tongue around it and making your back arch off the bed.

“First, you can call me anytime, I’ll always get to you. Second, I don’t want you to hold back any sounds.” He looked up to you with hungry eyes as you shook your head yes.

As he trailed his kisses down your abdomen, a few whimpers escaped you.

“Good.”

You spoke before he could continue, “Please Minseok, I want to feel you.”

He immediately understood what you mean and took off your pajama shorts along with his clothes.

“That’s Sir for you precious. understood?”

He lined himself with your entrance, not pushing in until he got his answer.

“Yes S-sir, please.”

You didn’t even know why you were fine with this situation, but you knew you’d do anything just to feel him. And you did. You let out a loud moan as he bottomed out inside of you, your hands flying to grip his arms. After a few seconds, he started thrusting in and out of you at an incredibly fast pace. He let out a groan against your neck.

“Third, you never, ever, call me “angel” again. Is that clear?” 

You couldn’t even answer him, too focused on reaching your high to for a clear sentence. His thrusts became even rougher, if that was even possible, and your orgasm crushed over you like a gigantic wave. Not giving you any time to ride your high, he completely stopped and raised your chin so you looked directly into his eyes. 

“I said: is. that. clear.”

You nodded in response and he ground his hips into yours, slowly this time. It felt as if you hadn’t orgasmed a few seconds later, your need just as present as before. 

“You won’t feel satisfied unless I am, precious, and I won’t be unless you answer me with your words.”

You managed to let out a small “yes” in-between a few broken moans and whines, but he didn’t seem to be happy with your answer. Thankfully, you managed to figure out why.

“Y-yes...Sir” At that word, he gave one harsh thrust, which made your eyes roll back in pleasure. “That’s a good girl.”

It surprisingly didn’t take long before his movements became more erratic, but before you could reach your second high with him, he pulled out to cum on your stomach. 

“Whyyy, s-sir, I was so close!” He ran a finger up your slit and watched as you shivered from the feeling.

“Do you want to cum, precious?” You nodded “please sir.”

Maybe he added something. Maybe not. You didn’t know since you immediately fell back asleep, exhausted. When you woke up the next morning, you first thought it was a -very hot- dream as you were perfectly clean, with no traces of Minseok’s passage to be seen around your room. The only thing that reminded you that this had all been real was the small amulet on your bedside table. 

You had been right from the first second, he was different. Definitely not in the way you thought he would but now wasn’t the time to debate on if it was good or bad. You were now linked to him. Forever.

Unorganised thoughts on Silver Snow:

When I finished Golden Deer, I said that it had felt like a more traditional Fire Emblem story than Blue Lions. Silver Snow is that but even more so (though GD is still the most trad-FE cast, IMO)

Having already played those two routes, it felt very much like a whirlwind tour of them both, plus another battle thrown in at the end - a battle that probably should have been harder, but I (completely accidentally) built the bulkiest Byleth imaginable, especially resistance wise, plus high magic - and so, by pairing high defensive stats with Nosferatu, I tanked every attack that came my way 

Gaming, for me, is just doing whatever the hell I feel like, stumbling into good results, and then pretending that I did it on purpose

I spent the whole battle with the Dragon Tales theme song stuck in my head. Kind of killed the mood

I really enjoyed that after wrapping up both the Edelgard and TWSITD plots, they basically Persona 4 you by trying to convince you that the whole game’s done now and all that’s left is to chat with everyone - though unlike in P4, there’s very obviously something left to do because they give you a whole month of prep time, rather than just one day

I felt the same way about this on Golden Deer - none of the characters are appropriately shocked by Rhea’s highly questionable actions 

Also - she says she’s going to explain the whole truth! And she doesn’t! Only the Byleth creation stuff! The other revelations from Golden Deer are missing! Rhea! Why! Are! You! Like! This!

This is actually a problem I have with this game as a whole - they want to keep certain lore and secrets exclusive to certain routes, but it results in every story feeling in some way incomplete. Like, Fates gets a lot of crap, but at least you did get a full story from your half (third? never played Revelation) a game for the price of a whole one. Blue Lions gets the worst of it, I think 

Plus, when you know some of said secrets, it makes characters who refuse to share them in other routes seem weirdly (and sometimes, contrivedly) cagey about things they really do not need to be cagey about. See: Claude refusing to tell Dimitri and Byleth in Azure Moon that he wants to End Racism, and instead vagueing about ‘achieving his dream’. This is not Edelgard wanting to conquer Fodlan and dismantle the entire social structure, Claude, your ideals really are not so controversial that you need to be this coy. Dimitri and I are cool, we getcha 

My one sentence review of the whole game is basically: Great characters, great world building, great gameplay - but really, really frustrating plot structure

I’m also really upset that Seteth does not have a dragon form

Speaking of Seteth, I married him this time around. I mostly decided to do it for laughs, but while Byleth/Dedue is still my number one Byleth pairing, I came to really, genuinely like them together. Seteth is one of my favs, now more than ever

It helps that romancing Seteth feels a lot less... creepy than romancing most of the students. I like Linhardt, but romancing him felt very weird to me because I couldn’t get over Byleth having first known him as a 16 year old under their care. Dedue, for the record, doesn’t elicit this response  because he doesn’t really feel as much like a student to me? Role-wise he feels a lot closer to the knights, and it’s just that he's been enrolled as a student for convenience’s sake, which makes him and Byleth feel more equal than they do with most of the other kids. Helps that he’s also on the older end

Anyway, Seteth and Byleth would be the nerdiest couple ever, is the impression I got from their ending. The confession scene made me laugh in how ‘oh we’ve got a lot of work to do - btw wanna get married? - sweet, now let’s get back to work’ it was. Mark Whitten is a gem

It’s also the the first time I felt like the game was actually shipping me with a main lord (Seteth taking that role in the absence of the box lords on this route). Haven’t done Crimson Flower yet, so no opinion on the Edelgard/Byleth relationship yet, but regarding Claude and Dimitri my (pretty damn controversial, possibly a bad idea to put out there) opinions on them with Byleth are that

Claude and Byleth are platonic bros, regardless of Byleth’s gender. I just don’t get any feeling of romance from their relationship at all, and so pairing them off feels weird (to me, personally - I don’t hate the ship or anything, though)

Meanwhile Dimitri 100% had a crush on his teacher at school, but after more than five years of enduring trauma after trauma, and then half a year of beginning to heal (whilst fighting a war culminating in the execution of his step-sister), Dimitri is nowhere near ready for a romantic relationship. And when he is, I wouldn’t want him with any of the main cast, Dimitri x Village Girl OTP. I guess if it has to be anyone, I’d be okay with Mercedes, maybe Marianne - hell, maybe even Claude - but really, I just want him to get a fresh start. I think that’s the healthiest option for him, in the end

I do think it’s a pairing that could work in an AU where Dimitri doesn’t have any of the experiences he has in canon, though 

And again, this is just my personal reading

I’ll also admit that I may be influenced by the fact that his two most popular pairings are with Byleth and Dedue, who I greatly prefer with each other. Mostly because I love Dedue with all my soul and his ending with Byleth is by far his happiest, in my eyes at least. It’s the only one where he puts some distance between himself and Dimitri and evens out the power balance in their relationship, which makes me happy because oh boy, the Dimitri/Dedue relationship is super interesting and compelling, but also (again, by my reading) all kinds of unhealthy as it’s presented for most of the game - power balance issues like I say, the fact that they tend to indulge, even encourage, each other’s worst instincts and behaviours, mutual guilt complexes - like I say, it’s fascinating, but damn screwed up. IMO, they’re one of the best examples I’ve seen of how unhealthy relationships aren’t always the result of one bad person, and how two good people can end up being very bad for each other

Though it is, again, a pairing I can see working (and actually being incredibly cute) in an AU where they’ve lived less horrible lives

And it’s not like I don’t want them to be friends, I just want them to also develop healthier boundaries and equal levels of respect

But hey, speaking of Dimitri - I flip flopped on whether I thought his death was handled better or worse here than Golden Deer. It was given, I felt, more appropriate gravitas, but again suffered from ‘Dimitri’s dead! No, Dimitri’s alive! Oh wait, now he’s dead again’ in like, three successive scenes. And then you see his... ghost? I guess?

Dimitri really seems to get the short end of the stick on routes outside his own. Claude’s non-Deer roles were, in both cases I’ve played, much stronger and more fitting, and Edelgard is Edelgard

Maybe he’ll be good in Crimson Flower. Please. I miss Dimitri mattering. He’s probably my favourite of the three

There’s a point - obviously I don’t fully know Edelgard yet, but from what I got from the White Clouds section, above anything else she strikes me as an incredibly realistic depiction of a slightly edgy, extremely idealistic, but also highly naive and short-sighted teenager

Her whole goal, it seems, is meritocracy. She hates the crest system and the nobility, and she wants to create a system of equal opportunity. I can get behind that, but I really hope she’s prepared to accept the fact that true equal opportunity is basically impossible without recreating The Giver, as inequality is always more complex than one single factor being to blame for everything. Has Edelgard considered other limitations that make true meritocracy difficult to achieve? Has she been working on, say, a comprehensive benefits system? Or is she more of a libertarian type, and so primarily all about negative freedom and removing direct oppression? I hope Crimson Flower goes into detail on this, I’d be genuinely interested to know

I also find it interesting that she gets very angry about the fact that people hurt her and her family as a means to their own ends, so she decides that her own ends are to eliminate the system that lead to that happening - and she doesn’t care who she has to hurt in the process

This isn’t a CinemaSins *ding* plot hole observation, I genuinely think it’s interesting, and not actually that unrealistic

I also suppose her goal is no less naive than End All Racism By Being Nice To People, but Claude isn’t killing and persecuting people in attempt to achieve that, so it invites less scrutiny

I do wonder if I would have felt more strongly positively about her if she’d been my first playthrough. I do believe she’s a person that sincerely means well, and she’s certainly sympathetic, but - hmm. I’ll make my mind up when I finish CF

Anyway, paired endings. A few that I got include Raphael and Bernadetta (by far my favourite Bernie ending so far, seriously, what is that Caspar ending), Shamir and Leonie, which was cute and goofy (as Leonie’s endings tend to be, I notice, I do like that girl), Felix and Dorothea (not my favourite for either, but cute), Sylvain and Mercedes (the same but even cuter), Cyril and Petra (which felt wrong, partly because I love Cysithea a hell of a lot, and also because despite knowing there’s only about a year between them, Petra looks so much older pre-time skip), Ferdie and Marianne (super wholesome and sweet), and Linhardt and Caspar (my boyyyyssss that I refuse to ever separate again)

Not sure what I’m going to aim for on CF aside from keeping those boys together and also Ferdie/Hubert, as I’ve Heard Things

Flayn and Manuela have an A support so I figured they had a paired ending and it turns out they do not, which means Manuela was alone forever and Flayn ran away because apparently she hated having Byleth for a step mother I guess, rude

My Byleth (Myleth?) was prepared to be the best step mother in the history of the world, so offended

I realised ‘Javelins of Light’ is one of my absolute favourite tracks in the whole game. Mostly because it sounds like something out of Danganronpa, which made me nostalgic

I also like ‘Guardian of Starlight’ for somehow managing to sound like a Danganronpa/PMD: Explorers crossover track

I love how out of nowhere the Immaculate One fight is. It really does just feel like they needed something to distinguish the route from Verdant Wind outside of Claude not being around, so they just had a map that was less cool in every way except for the dragon

Is there an explanation for why Nemesis doesn’t show up on this route?

Also - I didn’t mention this in Golden Deer thoughts but I also found that final battle way, way easier than it was probably meant to be because I’d made everyone into a flier and so the floor damage hazard was meaningless

Which I totally did on purpose and not so I could make a stupid joke post about my all-wyvern team 

Anyway, in conclusion, Silver Snow was a good route, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would (I’d kind of thought it was just going to be GD without Claude, which isn’t... totally wrong, but it’s got some other stuff going on too), I liked Seteth getting to have a bigger role, I thought it had the best final boss (if not the best final boss map), and I liked that I got some more Dragon Lore (never a bad thing)

Jake’s laughing so hard, Amy’s sure he’s going to wheeze himself into a poorly-timed asthma attack. The last thing they need right now is to have to call for backup while he fumbles with his inhaler.

“Alright, alright,” she grumbles, her cheeks warm with embarrassment. “So a double date with a young Al Gore at the Louvre isn’t the most plausible. But you asked for my dream date– you didn’t specify it had to be realistic!”

He snorts, but she shoves him in the shoulder before he can devolve into another laughing fit.

“Aw, you gotta give yourself some credit, Santiago. A date like that could totally happen.” He pauses, amusement clear on his face. “Just remind me to tell your future boyfriend to invest in a time machine.”

He ducks before she can shove him again, and just like that he’s doubled over and full-on giggling once more.

“Like your dream date is any less ridiculous,” she huffs.

He swipes at his eyes and coughs, taking a moment to settle his breathing. “Oh, I’ll have you know my ideal date is plenty realistic but dare-I-say still very romantic? The Jake Peralta boyfriend experience is quite intoxicating, thank you very much.”

She raises an eyebrow but nods for him to go on. For sheer curiosity’s sake, if nothing else.

“I’m a simple guy. I don’t have to go to a fancy museum or whatnot to have a good time. All I need is a few fluffy blankets, chairs and stuff for structure, way too many pillows, maybe some of those fairy lights to set the mood… You following me here, Santiago? I’m talking me, my boo, and the most epic pillow fort you’ve ever seen. We’ll sneak a laptop computer into the fort and put Die Hard on, duh, and then it’ll be candy and cuddles from there on out.”

She hums, vaguely impressed but not at all ready to admit that that does sound like a respectable stay-at-home date idea. (She’s even further away from acknowledging that she maybe also thinks all of that with Jake specifically sounds more than ideal.) “Movie night in a pillow fort, huh? Never took you for someone into textbook rom com dates, Peralta.”

“Hey, I like cuddles and warm blankets! They make me feel safe,” he shrugs, then shifts to smirking and waggling his eyebrows at her. “Besides, a pillow fort is the perfect place for a good ol’ make out sesh. Seriously, by the end credits, my date and I would totally be–”

“Okay, I’m going to go ahead and stop you there before this gets wildly inappropriate. Still technically work hours, Romeo.”

He sends her another cheeky grin before raising his binoculars and redirecting his attention to the warehouse they’ve been monitoring. She refocuses as well, filing this new fact about her partner somewhere in the back of her head – to be compartmentalized and hopefully forgotten, along with her mental catalogues of Weirdly Cute Things Jake Has Done and Shirts Jake Has Worn That Make His Arms Look Good.

“Are your eyes covered?” She asks, glancing behind her to triple check before unlocking her apartment door. “No peeking until I say so, okay?”

Jake scoffs but keeps his hands over his eyes. “Ames, if this is your way of easing me into blindfolds and bondage, let me tell you–”

“Oh, hush. I told you, I just need to make sure everything’s ready.”

They step into her entryway, with Jake following closely behind her then staying put when she tells him to.

Amy makes quick work of depositing her bag and shoes in their designated places, hanging up her coat, and running to get the string of lights plugged in. (She’d made sure the whole setup was prepped even before going to bed the night before, but she’d intentionally left the fairy lights off lest she be schooled by fire marshal Boone of all people.)

She surveys her living room – or what used to be her living room and what now is an organized mess of sheets strewn over dining chairs and pillows lain on every available surface – one last time before taking a steadying breath and turning back to her boyfriend. “Okay, Jake, you can look now.”

He drops his hands to his sides, and Amy watches as his expression morphs from confusion to wonder.

“Oh my god. Is this– It’s– Holy shit, it’s a pillow fort!”

He sheds his jacket and toes his shoes off as fast as possible, tripping over his socked feet to scramble into the makeshift entrance, half-squealing and half-rambling like an excited child the whole way. Amy laughs, already starting to feel pleased with herself as she crawls in after him.

“Amy, this is amazing! Did you put all of this together on your own?” He’s beaming, eyes shining with unbridled joy. In the few seconds it’s taken her to settle in against a strategically-arranged pile of pillows, he’s managed to wrap himself up in one of the three fleece blankets she’d prepared for them to use. (She’s going to have to do so much laundry this weekend.)

“Mhm,” she nods, hoping she’s coming off cool when actually she’s buzzing with giddiness from the inside out. “Do you like it?”

“Like it? I love it!” He falls back onto the thick floral comforter lining the floor beneath them, closing his eyes and making a satisfied hum before looking at her again. “Not to be weird, but you are making teenage Jake so happy right now. Like, I for realz would spend hours trying to imagine how my fort would look like and this– yeah, this is pretty darn close. The only thing it needs is–”

“Snacks? Check under that couch cushion.” She smiles, pointing to the spot beside his arm.

He sits back up then lifts the pillow in question, gasping loudly. “Gummy bears? Fruit Roll-Ups? One, two, three… seven types of chocolate, and even the Mexican candy from the bodega near the precinct? Amy, I–” His face shifts to something between bewilderment and awe, sending another surge of nerves through her. “I don’t know what to say… This is literally my dream date. How did you know?”

“Well, it’s... kind of a weird story. You’re going to laugh.” She stops, looking down and tucking her hair behind her ears while she searches for the right words to say. She’d known, logically, that it was much more likely he’d forgotten about their random conversation way back when, but a part of her had just hoped he’d remember so she wouldn’t have to explain herself like this.

“Come on, Ames. I promise I won’t laugh,” he says gently, nudging her leg with his foot. “I swear I really only want to know how you somehow read my mind. I mean, I know my school counselor said I should’ve kept daily diaries back then but I absolutely did not, so there’s no way you broke into one of those. Did I drunkenly blurt out my mushy teenage fantasies at Shaw’s the other week?”

She shakes her head, fiddling with the hem on the nearest pillowcase. “Not last week or at Shaw’s. I don’t expect you to remember this because it was at a stakeout a few years ago, but we’d talked about our ideal dates and you’d mentioned movie night in a pillow fort, so…” Her voice trails off as she digs underneath yet another blanket for her laptop and DVD copy of Die Hard.

She almost cringes when he doesn’t respond immediately, and it takes all her courage to get herself to look up from the loading screen.

He’s got that boyish grin on his face, of course. (It’s not fair that she still finds him ridiculously attractive, even when he’s obviously over the moon at her expense.)  

“You said you wouldn’t laugh,” she says, pouting.

“I’m not! I’m just–” His grin widens into a smirk. “ So, so glad I finally have proof you’ve liked me for ages. Wow, Ames. You’ve been holding onto this piece of info for years, just waiting until you could finally put it to use, huh? That had to have been at least three years ago by now, right? Gosh, Amy, I had no idea–”

“Shut up and eat your candy,” she grumbles, throwing a packet of fruit leather his way.

He snickers but doesn’t say anything more as he tears into the plastic and bites into the chewy candy. The tips of her ears burn just the same, with her lack of an outright denial loud and clear in the air between them.

“It’s okay, babe,” he says brightly, laying a sticky kiss on her flushed cheek. (The brand new pet name isn’t lost on her at all, but she’ll unpack her feelings about that another time.) “I’ve most definitely liked you for way too long, so at least we’re even.”

An overly long Speakeasy Tonight rant

You! Yes, you! You’ve got to play Speakeasy Tonight.

Whew, sorry, had to get it off my chest.

Personally, I find it heartbreaking how underrated this story is. It has it’s flaws, sure, but the good stuff is sooooo good! Wait, let me try to persuade you.

THE PROS

The setting. Okay, I admit that’s purely subjective, but if you dig the 1920s aesthetic, I don’t know why you’re not playing this yet. They’ve got it all, this feeling of old Hollywood, the jazz, flappers with flashy dresses and cute bob haircuts, guys in fine suits, the booming nightlife with a good sense of thrill to it. ♡ (￣З￣)

And yeah, seeing how the plot revolves around our characters running a speakeasy during the Prohibition times, it’s basically a gangster story, so if you enjoy those… (looking at you here, GIL fans)

The stylised writing’s another nice touch; love the slang characters use (which is super funny sometimes, for a modern person).

Another thing, I am happy that they didn’t try to shy away from the problems lesbian and interracial couples had to face back in the day. It’s toned down, but it’s still there. 

You know, other Lovestruck stories are set in either present, future or fantasy worlds where these kinds of relationships are viewed as normal (as they should), but here… 

Don’t get me wrong, I am ecstatic I can enjoy all these lgbtq Lovestruck couples just be happy together without any prejudice bs, but something about the struggles of Julius and Sofia made them feel more… real, y’know? Weirdly refreshing. And the MC exploring her sexuality honestly gave me the feels. Speaking of which…

The main character. So Lovestruck MC’s are definitely better than those from Japanese otome games, but still, I’ve always wanted them to be a bit more proactive, to have dreams of their own and a life outside of their LI.

This girl, however, is honestly everything I’ve ever wanted in an MC. (⌒▽⌒)☆

I love her humour and sass, competence and independence (and her looks too). I love that they made her a character, not just ‘hashtag relatable’. She moves the plot along instead of the plot just happening to her, goes through a character arc. And she’s actually the boss of the gang! She doesn’t just stick to her LI and do whatever they do! This seriously makes me happy beyond measure.

The love interests. They might be a tad cliche, but they feel real enough to make the relationships seem very genuine. Just like the MC, they change a bit over the course of the story. They also have nice chemistry with the MC. The sex scenes actually get pretty steamy, and there are a lot of those, which is always a plus in my book. (≧◡≦) ♡

In my opinion, ST has more explicit flirting & sex scenes and a more independent MC than many other Lovestruck games. Which is kinda ironic, seeing how ST is set in less ‘progressive’ times than all those other stories.

THE CONS

So there’s a lot to love about ST, but then there are the more… questionable aspects.

The heart choices. Unlike the newer Lovestruck games, in ST you can’t get any CGs unless you pay with hearts, which… a lot of people weren’t thrilled about. (⌒_⌒;)

So the system in ST works like this. At some points of the story you’re given a wardrobe choice. One dress’s free, the other costs hearts, and you have to pick the latter if you want to get a CG.

I didn’t really like this at first, but the more I think about… Dress choices cost about as much as a heart scene in the newer Lovestruck games, and they happen about as often. So I guess if you were too buy all of the additional content, 12 episodes of ST would cost you about as much as, say, 12 episodes of Havenfall. 

But say you’re poor like me and barely buy anything. What do you lose? 

In Havenfall’s case you don’t get a part of the story. Moreover, they always emphasise how the MC wanted to do the heart option, but couldn’t, and it just makes me so sad and bitter every freaking time. (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻

In ST you get the whole story, you just don’t get the illustrations. And honestly, I’m kinda okay with this. CGs are nice, but I’m reading the story for the story, so if I have to choose what to sacrifice, I’d rather give up the CGs.

Note: there ARE heart scenes in ST, but they happen like 1 or 2 times a season and are honestly not that important.

The art style. ST is one of 2 Lovestruck games with a semi-realistic style (instead of the more anime-ish one they use now), the other one being To Love&Protect. And this actually made me avoid ST for a long time. I saw TL&P, thought it looked super stiff and unappealing and just assumed ST was the same. I. WAS. WRONG. w(°ｏ°)w

The character sprites in ST are actually very cute and lively. I love how all the LIs have very distinctly different facial features and body types, like how Neil is long and thin, and Cliff is this big beefy guy with a wide smile, and… Well, you get the point.

Note: have to admit, minor characters don’t look as appealing; feels like some of them were drawn by a different artist, or maybe just rushed.

Welp, guess instead of listing the cons I ended up trying to defend the series. Yeah, I’m bias. What’cha gonna do ‘bout that? ╮(￣ω￣;)╭

But really… ST is flawed, sure, but I still think of it as a flawed little gem~☆. And if anything I said sounded interesting to you, maybe give it a try? It’s worth it, I promise.

TO BE CONTINUED (?)

From what I’ve seen, ST might not have many fans, but they’re all really dedicated to these series. I mean, I’ve already said I can’t afford to spend much on Lovestruck, but if they had a donation poll to bring ST back, I’d jump right in (maybe cut on my food expenses or something, haha).

Yet Speakeasy Tonight has been shoved in the back for what feels like forever now. Like, when you open the Lovestruck app and look at the list of the existing series, you’ve got to swipe all the way right, and there, at the very end you would find ST. It’s like the developers don’t even want anyone to know ST exists. And like, why? WHY?? (」°ロ°)」

When I first read ST and noticed something called ‘Epilogues’, I thought Lovestruck just cancelled the series and this was their way to wrap the series up. You know, just a little something to give readers their happy endings and make them feel satisfied. Well, I was wrong. Epilogues only added more questions and threw in more cliffhangers. 

ST has been on a hiatus ever since, a ‘To be continued’ with no ‘continued’ in site. And yet… A girl can dream, right?

(For those not in the know, this is referring to my Thoughts about the way Nura’s name was dropped in the most recent SG episode.)

Okay, so I wrote out a ridiculously long and kinda confusing explanation the first time I tried to answer this, so I’m gonna try to Condense it this time. (Edit from future me, who just finished writing this whole long-ass meta: Sooo, condensing it Didn’t Really Work, and it’s obnoxiously long anyway. Oops. Oh well. At least it’s more coherent this time.) 

(general warning for people reading this post who aren’t rachel: uhhh, maybe don’t look below the cut if you’re a big Brainy/Nia shipper? there’s no Hate, but there is a lot of theorizing about why I don’t think the ship’s actually gonna sail the way most ppl are thinking it will, sooo if you don’t want to feel bummed out, then maybe don’t read this. cool? cool.) 

(also I fully acknowledge that all of this is Pure Speculation, aided by some ridiculously intense scrutiny of a tv show, and thus not an exact science, and completely likely to be wrong. but man, would I love to be right.)

So first, I’m just gonna talk about the existence of the namedrop in general. So, before that moment, we had no idea how important Nura would actually be to Nia’s story. The writers could’ve chosen to not even name her at all, and could’ve just left the reveal as something more general, like “Brainy knows something about Nia in the 31st century, but can’t say what because of Space-Time Continuum stuff.” But they didn’t - instead, they created a Very Specific secret that Brainy is now keeping from everyone. 

This is absolutely a deliberate choice made by the writers. They already have Nia as a Nura-like character. They didn’t have to namedrop the actual Nura if they didn’t want to. They didn’t have to create that specific problem (the problem being that Brainy apparently knows Nia’s descendent really well). But they did anyway.

Additionally, the fact that they didn’t have a follow-up scene later in the episode where Brainy explains who Nura is means that all of this WILL come back up eventually. They won’t just leave that thread hanging. So, an important question to ask now is: What Big Thing is gonna happen between Brainy and Nia that forces Brainy to finally spill the beans about who Nura is? 

My personal guess? Nia gets the wrong idea about their relationship, and either kisses Brainy or tries to kiss him, and he panics and blurts out that they can’t do that because he knows her descendent, so being with Nia either feels weird to him, or he’s worried about screwing up the timeline and potentially Marty McFly-ing Nura out of existence. Of course, in telling this to Nia, he’d have to explain who Nura is to both her and the audience.

(Wishful thinking? Maybe. Kind of a cruel bait-and-switch for the writers to pull on shippers? Yeah, I’d say so. But it’s not that different from what they did with Kara and Mon-El last season, and I actually think it’s a VERY plausible ending for Brainy/Nia, sooo…) 

The Reveal™ could happen any number of ways, though, and I realize that. This one just seems like the most CW-style one lmao.

Okay, now I’m gonna analyze the Actual Namedrop Scene, because I can’t stop myself from theorizing and Tinfoil-Hatting™ about Brainy and Nura’s potential relationship in the 31st century.

First, I wanna talk about how intimately familiar Brainy is with Nia’s powers, and how they work. 

He obviously knows these things because of how often he’s worked with Nura in the past - tbh, he and Nura probably discovered these techniques while working together to help her figure her powers out. So, Brainy doesn’t have to do any kind of trial-and-error process with Nia here, because he’s already gone through all that with Nura. This is his second go-around with all of this. 

The concept of Brainy and Nura as a Dream Interpreting Duo is further solidified by this line:

Without Nia even really asking him to, Brainy automatically assigns himself the role of her Personal Dream Interpreter, which again tells me that this is probably the exact kind of relationship that he has/had with Nura. He’s recreating his interactions with Nura without really realizing it (yet). 

Note his body language throughout this scene. It’s not clinical or distant, which would imply that his dynamic with Nura was an impersonal one driven by duty or scientific curiosity - rather, it’s very personal, and intimate, and even Soft in a way that we’ve never really seen Brainy behave with anyone before. 

(Brainy/Nia shippers are, of course, going to interpret this behavior as evidence for their own ship, but IMO it’s actually much stronger evidence towards a (former) Brainy/Nura romance, more than anything else.)

Whether or not there’s a romantic angle, though, Brainy and Nura are still clearly very close. I’d say that’s pretty undeniable at this point.

This is Brainy’s face right as he calls Nia by Nura’s name, btw:

(So frickin’ cute, oh my gooood. This is one of the biggest things that makes me question if his relationship with Nura might’ve been romantic at some point, because LOOK at this! Look at his FACE!) 

Aaaand this is his face once he realizes that he Fucked Up™:

It isn’t even an ‘oh shit!’ reaction. He doesn’t blink or look startled. He just immediately and completely walls himself off. Because that Softness that he accidentally showed here? That smile, the Sparkly Eyes? Those were his feelings about Nura, getting tangled up in his conversation with Nia. Those words that he said to Nia? Are ones that he’s undoubtably said to Nura before. 

That’s why the slip-up happened in the first place. He was talking to Nia, but due to the familiarity and intimacy of the moment, he was thinking about Nura. 

Now I’m gonna talk about Tropes. Because I LOVE tropes. And as soon as the namedrop happened the way it did - in the middle of an emotionally vulnerable moment - my mind instantly went to the Wrong Name Outburst trope:

So like, Brainy saying Nura’s name when he did isn’t as bad as, say, him blurting it out in the middle of sex (lmao can you imagine), but it’s still not a good sign for Brainy/Nia, as far as I’m concerned. It’s never a good sign when a dude calls his supposed Love Interest by the wrong name after knowing her for a while. It just isn’t. 

(It’s different if the Wrong Name Outburst had been a mistake from the first time they met - that’s a different version of the trope. Like, if Brainy had called Nia “Nura” outside of the pizzeria, then that’s an understandable case of Mistaken Identity. But to call her that when he already knows full-well who she is? Yikes lol, that’s a BIG romance no-no.)  

Anyway, speaking of the pizzeria, if you click on the “You Remind Me of X” trope link, you can then scroll down to find this section: 

The Flashback Echo mentioned here definitely applies to the pizzeria scene, right down to Brainy’s “Do I know you?” moment of startled recognition. If we’re following the logic of the trope, then it’s not a far stretch to assume that Brainy’s connection to Nura might’ve been romantic, most likely a “failed romance” (since I doubt Nura is dead). 

Of course, Nura could also just be a really good friend, and maybe that would be enough to trigger the same reaction from Brainy…but there’s no way of knowing for sure until he lets the audience in on his secret. I’m really, really curious about what explanation they’ll go with, though. Personally, I hope it’s romance. But maybe that’s just me.

And now, finally, an add-on (because I can’t figure out where else to put it). Why do I think that Nura would specifically be a former love interest for Brainy, if she’s going to be one at all? Well, for two reasons:

1) They already pulled a Surprise Wife/Girlfriend trope with Mon-El and Imra last season, and IMO that’s a unique enough story beat that they wouldn’t want to use it again with Brainy and Nura, lest they risk the show becoming weirdly repetitive. 

2) Revealing that Nura is Brainy’s Amicable Ex (meaning: they’re still good friends even though they’re not Together anymore) would be a good way to pay homage to the Brainy/Dream Girl relationship from the comics and give a definitive reason why Brainy/Nia can’t happen, while still leaving the door open for the writers to potentially explore…uhh, certain other ships next season. *COUGH* You know…potentially. 

Thus my assumption that, on the off chance that they DO make Brainy/Nura romantic, it’ll be something in the past, that’s now over and done with. 

(NOTE: The Brainy/Nura romance angle is really just a Pet Theory that I’ve grown particularly fond of over the past few days. Like…if I’m being Realistic, I think it’s much more likely that Brainy’s never been in a romantic relationship before in canon, given how little he seems to know about relationships and social cues in general. So, Nura will probably just be a close friend. But I think most of the stuff I talked about can still totally apply even with them just being close friends.)

Aaand…that’s it. That’s all I’ve got.

Oh, wow, that’s a lot XD I’ll try to do as many as I can, but I shall try to keep it briefer than usual. If something is too difficult, then I’ll skip. Let’s go! 1) Spotify, SoundCloud, or Pandora? My friends are trying to get me into spotify, I tend to use soundcloud more, but my preferred way of finding new music has often ended up being accidentally leaving youtube on in a tab after a song finished, and having it cycle through sort-of related music.

3) what color are your eyes?Reasonably light brown. Someone was once nice enough to tell me they look like honey, when I’m in the sun.

They asked me why I didn’t invite them to my party, and I gave them a reason that was both untrue and rude, and in the end I invited them and I came. But I’m still not sure why I did that.

Weirdly, friends keep telling me they thinl I have clear skin, and I’m like ‘whose face have you been looking at?!’ Which just does to show that we’re the only ones who notice our own blemishes. Take for example, scars. I have a few (!!) on my face, and people can know me for years and not realise they are there. Then literally turn around one day and say “OMG, what happened to your FACE?” To which I reply… “Um, nothing? It’s always like this.”.

45) how many kids do you want? This is not something I’ve really thought about? Enough to keep each other company, but not so many that I’m spending the next 500 years changing nappies. So 2 or 3, I guess?

47) what type of house do you live in? (big, small, etc) Whatever kind of house I can afford. I don’t realistically see myself affording to live in London, and I don’t realistically see any chance of a big house if I live in the UK. But such is life.

49) what was the last compliment you received?On one of my recent night shifts, one of the nurses asked me where I was from. And I told her (people don’t usually know, or care, much about my country, but I see no reason to lie), and she said “I wanted to know why, because you are so confident. The way you talk” And I was taken aback. “Confident? ME? Really?!?”. To which she replied, laughing “You think you are not?”.  All this time I’ve been quite reserved, and always told by my seniors that I ought to have more faith in my clinical decisionmaking and just be more assertive, it was quite surprising to find out that someone saw me bumbling along on my night shift and thought I looked and sounded confident. 51) how old were you when you found out santa wasn’t real?Probably around 7? I was apparently not amused. I can’t remember. In retrospect, perhaps it’s odd that I always knew about the birds and the bees but not about Santa.53) opinion on smoking?Not a good idea, but often understandable. Nearly always started when we are very young, in order to fit in or belong. I grew up with one parent being a smoker (they quit, yay!) and have friends who smoked since their teens, so I can understand how hard it is to give up, and what addiction means. But one thing I really don’t understand is grownups “socially smoking”. At all. It’s flirting with addiction, has no benefits, and just drains your money?  I feel that most people my age who indulge in social smoking really should probably know better. But then that applies to many things in our lives.

55) what is your dream job? To be a magical girl/superhero. Being a doctor who draws comics shall, however, suffice until I get called into service by a cute magical familiar.

57) do you take shampoo and conditioner bottles from hotels? I used to use them, but I wouldn’t say that I would stock up on the whole stash. Though I have a sad feeling that they chuck the ones you don’t use, so maybe we should all be taking them?

59) do you smile for pictures?I used to never smile for pictures, because I had over-large incisors with a noticeable gap in them, and felt really self-conscious about them for most of my life. Then I stopped caring. But lately I realised my teeth no longer look oversized, and the gap has kind of shrunken, a little to my dismay.

61) have you ever peed in the woods? Another bizarrre question. I don’t hang out in the woods, but if there were no toilets within reasonable access, then I would? Pee is aseptic and the entirety of nature does it, plus it’s hardly going to get in anyone’s way?

But I’m attached to my name, it’s a part of me and my ethnic identity, and definitely am not going into relationships with an idea that I “have to take my husband’s name”. They can take mine, if they wish. Perhaps I’d be tempted to if someone’s name was just incredibly awesome, who knows? I would rarely rule anything out before the fact. 55. What is your favorite flower? Purple coneflowers have had my heart for years, but a lot of bee-friendly flowers have been growing on me.

56. Any bad habits you have? Maybe it’s not a habit more than it is a symptom, but I scratch at my ears until they bleed and clean them until the protective layer of wax is gone and they get infected. Not fun :(

63. What are 3 things that irritate you about the same sex? These seem pretty heavily based on stereotypes. Three things that irritate me about PEOPLE are 1. over-dramatic, 2. little to no forethought about most things, 3. UNWILLING TO SOLVE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS THROUGH SIMPLE COMMUNICATION.

67. Are you actually a good person? Why? I think I’m trying really hard to be a good person. I still have a lot of really selfish habits and mindsets, but (weirdly enough) my experiences with religion have helped me change them.

78. Are you religious? Does God exist? Uh, yeah! I think I am? I recently got introduced to a really open branch of religion and I’ve been learning a lot. I don’t think there’s a man in the sky who knows everything. I think God is a limited entity that exists in the interactions between people? Like... I don’t know. God is the forgiveness between two people for the initial awkwardness of conversation. God is the need for letting grudges go quickly out of personal growth, not out of charity for the other person. God is the overwhelming sense of calmness we get when we’re out in the quiet of nature. God is the ever-expanding universe getting to know itself, if that makes sense? I dunno. I’m still a little embarrassed about religion, but I really like to explore it in writing lmao.

79. What was the last book you read? Did it impress you and why? A Book of Bees! YES! It was so poetic and peaceful! My copy even had grammatical errors and typos, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the book!!!

80. What do you think about vegetarianism/veganism? Extremely admirable, especially when it’s in protest of the current meat industry.

87. Meaning behind your blog name? It started out as a vent blog. I deal with a lot of things through humor, so a lot of my reactions to sad relatable posts would be to laugh and then cringe.
