The Brozone Misconception

(This picture is more a joke don't take it too seriously)

This is a kind of long analysis, deep dive, and discussion about certain fandom misconceptions. I am 100 percent open for discussion but I would ask that you read the whole thing first before reaching out, and please be respectful!

Essay under the cut

There is a common misconception in a small subset of the trolls fandom about the character of Brozone. That is their reaction and treatment of Branch, their overall purpose in the story, and whether or not Branch should have forgiven them. Whether or not their trauma born toxic traits which they aim to grow out of should be forgiven or not.

Let’s begin with an analysis of the beginning, middle, and end of their arc progression more or less.

We start with our favorite problem child, Jonathan Dorian, mounting the pressure of tonight's show, building expectations, and showing us, the audience, a bit of what goes on every time these guys perform:

Making Bruce do 100 more push ups in the time before showtime (1 minute)

Pressuring Clay to wear the funderdrawers even tho he clearly doesn’t want to

Rebuffing floyds attempts to calm himself down

And his worst crime

Making Baby Branch Nervous

Now you could see all of these and think “Evil! Evil John Dory! Jail for John DOry for 1000 years!!” because he is being oh so toxic. Now JD’s main motivation for pushing his brothers so hard in this moment has to do with the “Perfect Family Harmony” which according to baby Branch no one has ever hit before

And you can see the strain it puts on the other brothers not just through the scenes i showed before but Clay literally tells us

John Dory not only sees it as a great achievement, but he is putting his own and his families self worth all on whether or not they accomplish the perfect family harmony

And when they fail he blames it on them not following his lead

He still believes after all of that that they can successfully complete the Perfect Family harmony

This looks to be about the first time the brothers air their grievances out to their older brother about how they actually feel about not only completing the harmony, but the direction of the band itself.

All of this happens within the heat of the moment, and only continues to get worse as when confronted with all of this Negativity JD decides to leave. You can see by his facial expressions in the above screenshots he was already feeling terrible about the situation as a whole. Animation is very show don’t tell just as much as live action is, it’s very important for storytelling as a whole. A character should not have to SAY they are remorseful for you to be able to see it.

So JD leaves leading his other brothers to leave as well. Ironically they are following his lead badum dum dum.

Now we can assume this is probably par for the course for these guys, cuz Grandma is right there, and she just lets them leave, you say plot convenience I say subtle story telling/ It is implied they do this all the time and will eventually come back. (they don’t)

Now you may be thinking, Ricky, you say that Brozone is not toxic, yet you show us the worst examples of their character. Listen dear reader, this is only the beginning, what I’ve shown you is merely the establishment of the eventual conflict that will be part of the driving force behind character growth and the story itself.

Let’s move on to adulthood. The main arguments against Brozone happen here, other than the initial abandonment of Branch, which, I should remind you, happened when the oldest among them was still a teenager (teenagers are dumb).

In this section I also have to mention another movie, and another character, as he is usually brought up in these discussions

Creek

Creek is usually used as a comparison to the Brozone bros in the argument that Brozone is EVIL AND TOXIC AND UNFORGIVABLE and Creek by comparison should be seen in a better light and not deserve the hate. To be honest I have never seen the level of hate that has been given to Brozone leveled at Creek in the slightest. He is canonically a toxic character, and one who is incredibly self serving which a majority of the fandom recognize and vibe with. Creeks admittedly rancid personality is a massive factor in his appeal (at least for me), and that is kind of the point of his character: To be awful and unforgivable. Creek wasn’t made as your average side character, Creek was specifically made to be an antagonist, to be a contrast to one of our main protagonists, Branch. That is why they are always at odds with each other within both 3D media and 2D media.

Creek has also shown disregard for Branch’s hobbies in the main show, tossing his puzzle into the fire. This was during Haircuffed, when Creek didn’t want to do Branch’s puzzle

Which you think not so bad, its just a puzzle! Well…

Puzzle’s have incredible significance to Branch, a comfort object if you will, and another way to feel connected to his Grandma. Now you might cry “Creek didn’t know it was significant! He can’t be held responsible for that!” HE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO KNOW THE TRAUMA BEHIND THE PUZZLE TO NOT DESTROY THE PUZZLE.

Conversely let's look at the Brothers:

Throughout the course of the film they are a bit rude to Branch and dismissive of him:

But anyway

These scenes are minor things that add up during the course of the film for the purpose of showing off the traits they will put aside and grow out of for the sake of each other.

Lets talk about Xmen, you think JD is bad well watch this

Anyway

Before we tackle the entire argument scene let’s first tackle the individual character of each of the bros, Specifically: John Dory, and Bruce, who are most criticized for their actions.

John Dory is one of the first brothers we see return in the film, and his first and foremost objective is to collect Branch so that they can go get their other brothers to rescue Floyd. Some have called John Dory uncaring for his younger brothers, but if that were the case why start the rescue mission at all? An uncaring brother would just ignore the letter and go on with his life, but John Dory literally drops everything just to go rescue his little brother. The letter even specified getting the other brothers first, but John Dory goes alone to get Floyd out of danger as fast as possible only retrieving the other bros when he fails (and cuz he didnt know where they were, can’t waste time when you got a brother to save)

A brother who didn’t care about his family wouldn’t go through all this effort. Some would say he’s only doing it for appearances sake, but for whom? Him and his brothers have been out of the limelight for 20 years, JD especially has been isolated in the neverglades, who is he trying to impress with this? No one, he’s just a good brother.

Also a reminder! When thinking about breaking Floyd out he is not the first to bring up the harmony! Floyd is, John Dory had a much more clever idea

So it's not just to complete the harmony either.

He’s also held on to all the merch from their Brozone days, mementos of his family, it shows how he cares, but also the flaw he aims to overcome: his desperate attempt to cling to the past, the better days.

Now let's go to Bruce, easily the most scrutinized of the brothers (because of the baby comment)

When he first sees his brothers again this is his reaction:

Bruce is excited to introduce them to his family, excited to reconnect.

“It’s so nice to finally meet you” Implies that he’s talked about them at length and the possibility of them meeting up with one another.

Also all of his kids completely ignore their mom, just to ask their father something, or tell on their sibling, or ask for his help as seen in this entire clip

With the ketchup kid he assures his kid he will handle it (and yes Brandy had to handle it but um rescue mission?) and that he loves them he just needs a bit of time to address, um who was it again? His brothers, right…

Bruce is argued as being incredibly selfish, I had seen a meme once that had suggested Bruce would let his own children die before he would give up his own life, which is horrendous and blatantly untrue. Bruce only tries to turn away his brothers when John Dory brings up the perfect family harmony and that’s before he knows it's for Floyd, once he finds out it’s for Floyd he is immediately on board! His biggest concern about the harmony at this time is how they’re going to do it.

As for “abandoning his family again” Bruce is going on a rescue mission, which he asks his wife before hand if it is alright

Which she approves, he also agrees to cover for a WHOLE MONTH for the yoga retreat (Also seen in the clip above)

He spends the majority of the journey caring for Tiny Diamond as well, he lets Tiny into his hair, carries him around in a baby sling he’s a dad to any kid who needs him.

Clay doesn’t get as much scrutiny as either of the older bros, most likely due to his inability to leave the golf course and the fact he apologizes to Branch at the end. There are many things that mimic the same in the ending scene but let’s address the points brought up within the argument that people use to claim the evilness of Brozone.

Also fun reminder, Clay is the one to start the fight, Not John Dory, not Bruce, Clay just a fun note (he is a lil problematic and argumentative and thats why i love him)

Clay brings up John Dory being bossy which sets everyone off into a tangent about the past, past actions that they think are resurfacing

Clay: No. No, dude. You’re forcin' us to be perfect, just like you always have, so we can hit the perfect family harmony.

John Dory: Yeah. For Floyd.

Bruce: Is it? Or is this all just so you can tell people what to do again?

John Dory: Wha What?

Bruce: This isn’t gonna work if you keep on bein' the same old John Dory.

We all know John Dory’s reason for being “bossy” ; his reason for his perfection, once done out of an effort to impress, is now one out of necessity. They need to be perfect because now someone can die, and the others can’t see that due to their own trauma at the hands of JD’s perfectionism.

As shown way at the beginning of the essay, all of the brothers suffered at the hands of JD’s past obsession, Bruce had to look a certain way pushing his body past its limits, Clay had to act a certain way disregarding his own happiness to keep up an image, Floyd was ignored and his advice pushed aside, and Branch was pushed to be perfect when he was only about 2 years old (or a month old if you go by the brozone blog). JD also suffered, pushing himself to make song after song, mentally exhausting himself and inadvertently hurting his brothers in the process of doing what he thinks is right for them.

JD also had the responsibility (as a teen) to parent all of his younger brothers:

John Dory: Well, I’m not allowed to change. I’m the oldest. I had to be the leader.

John Dory: Why do you think I moved to the middle of nowhere? So I didn’t have to be in charge of anyone. Four little brothers is a lot of responsibility.

You could argue it's his responsibility as the oldest but Grandma was right there, they shouldn’t be his sole responsibility.

When most of them left it was done out of self preservation, to protect their sanity and to finally find happiness outside of a place that was no longer bringing it to them. They were kind of acting how most would want Branch to act, they cut out the toxic family for their own safety.

Bruce: [stammers] Why do you think I left? So no one would treat me like you did.

Clay:

Clay: I’m gonna find trolls who take me seriously. Next to Clay is a picture of himself in a graduation cap

(Also that is Clays graduation photo, they are all around teen years in the prologue which means this is either a middle school graduation photo or he graduated early and is still not taken seriously, which as someone who also faces that [only being seen one way despite your achievements] is incredibly discouraging and soul destroying)

They most likely didn’t return due to the fact they didn’t want to be faced with this kind of treatment again (golf course entrapment aside)

(Now you’re probably wondering about Floyd and he’s a whole other post, this is mostly focusing on the brothers who receive the most criticism due to misrepresentation)

During the argument they talk about going their separate ways, it is admittedly harsh they way they talk about leaving again, but they never say they’re leaving forever. Bruce has to return to his wife and kids, Clay left the golf course without one of its leaders, JD has his own life and routine, of course they’d go back to it once it was over, but that doesn’t mean visiting is off the table, and that they’d never see each other again.

Cut Image: John Dory: What? The mission’s the mission. [chuckles] You didn’t think we’d all live together when this was all over, did you? Singin' songs and roastin' marshmallows?

Again i recognize JD is being an asshole here, but he is only knocking the idea of living together off the table, which kind of understandable they’re all adults with their own lives they don’t need to live together, I don’t get mad at my sister for going back to her house when shes done visiting. But again it is more how they say it then what they’re saying

Branch: [scoffs] Oh, I’m sorry. Is that funny to you? That I might want us to actually be a family again? Tiny Diamond, pull over. Now.

Seen is JD's look of regret

You can see on his face that he regrets what he said when Branch says this, when he gets angry at him, he didn’t mean it like that. Thats when the don’t be a baby comment comes in, they still don’t actually understand why he’s upset, they think he’s acting childish, they don’t recognize he’s changed yet

These are their faces when they hear what Branch has been through, they obviously are upset, they’re hurt on his behalf, they are remorseful, this and their future actions signify the shift from who they were (hurt kids turned hurt adults, fighting over their past trauma)

After Branch leaves, they, on their own accord, continue the mission to save Floyd, which is how they get caught, and during the final climax control freak JD relinquishes control, having changed and lets Branch take the lead. This is after Branch reminds them they don’t have to be perfect to be in harmony, just to be as they are together which they AGREE

Once they save Floyd we are brought to Bruce’s restaurant, he brings them there to host their reunion, there is where branch gets encouragement from JD, where Clay apologizes, where Floyd reminisces and you can see JD engaging with his brothers more than just encouraging Branch he has joined Clays sad book club

This isn’t the end of their reconnection, this is only the beginning. They still have lots of time to grow, and to become closer as family.

Now lets head back to Creek for a moment before we close this off:

We have brought up the puzzle destruction and his purpose as an antagonist. The main argument most people use is that Creek had no other choice but to sell out his entire race to be eaten and killed to save himself. He had a choice, Branch would’ve let himself get eaten if it meant protecting all of troll village as noticed when he protects poppy in twt (though he might’ve actually found another way out), Poppy would’ve as well. In tbt Floyd begs each of his brothers who meets him before the climax to let him die so they don’t face the same fate, these are all selfless acts. Creek reacts selfishly, eat everyone else but don’t eat me, then he smugly confronts Poppy, obnoxiously laments about how he has to live with his actions when if he were a truly good and selfless character wouldn't have been an issue. He smiles smugly, shrugs his shoulders, and lets himself be carried to safety when his people look at his betrayal with disbelief and sadness.

Creeks actions in the 1st movie are awful, they’re supposed to be, they’re meant to be unforgivable crimes, and that is why he is killed in the 3D canon, legit he is dead in the 3D canon. 2D and 3D are different continuities, which is part of why I find them (Brozone and Creek) to be mostly incomparable.

Brozone’s arc only affects Branch and each other and in the end they grow stronger, and into better people. Creeks arc/actions affect an entire species and their survival, within the 2D continuity his actions only continue to be self serving, and rather toxic (more for funsies but you know) he should not have been forgiven, but he was. His actions were deplorable yet forgiven which then begs the question why aren’t Brozones? Creek also wrote the apology song solely to humiliate Branch in front of his friends which is not cool bro, Branch did not deserve the treatment he got in the episode from anyone.

To conclude my thoughts are that Creek and Brozones actions are incomparable, Creek’s actions are not meant to be taken in a positive or sympathetic light, he is a villain cut and dry, that is who he was made to be and he does it wonderfully. I don’t hate Creek, I love his character, he is awful and that is great! Love toxic awful characters! Brozone are a representation of a broken family coming together again, they are toxic, and then they grow, they are meant to do so, the villains of that movie are Velvet, Veneer, and familial trauma all of which get mended by the end of the film. It’s not perfect but its there, and the ignorance of it is what causes these major misconceptions.

Tommy is of course a polarising entertainer. More so than most.

It can be odd to discuss him for this reason. A lot of people find his content cringy or obnoxious. And that's not a feeling that will ever go away. I don't think it's really a problem, you shouldn't need to appeal to everyone, merely appeal to your audience. That's not saying crit isn't valid or something like that xD, but there's no point pushing Tommy to a mould he's not going to fit. An energetic, big personality is a huge appeal in itself. I like how he can take control of a conversation by knowing how to ask questions and say statements that put others on the back foot. Others will find him rude and offputting for that sort of thing but I find this brings out some charming dynamics, especially as he isn't actually mean at all, he's very nice and just likes the witty adversarial banter.

There's also a reason he's got that tagline of 'annoying at first' (which is brilliant to have by the way). I think that is actually a result of his sarcasm. a lot of Tommy's persona is ironic. He'll say statements about being a strong man who loves money etc and it can take people a little time to realise that that whole thing is a joke - it's not real. New viewers may time to work out his humour and it's not funny until you realise that Tommy doesn't just make jokes - he is the joke.

just found out abt this game like yesterday, started playing without any high expectations and i've played through the whole thing at least twice already! the way you're introducing the story and the conflicts is so good, and can i just say, the way you make the world feel alive?! its crazy?!?!

every single character we meet even if its just for one scene is so full of life and personality. it always feels like they have their own stuff going on in the background, and that's such a rare thing to find in writing in general, never mind IFs! your characterization is just SOO good, every interaction you write feels like its real people talking and bickering, even the scenes of the crew fighting like a bunch of toddlers XD

it's the little details, like when MC takes the bus instead of going w Markus in ch 4, and you choose to listen in to the conversations happening around MC, and every single one of them feels so real. those ppl feel like ppl i could meet irl, and they're just NPCs! they don't directly impact the story, but they feel real, they make the world come alive and really help immerse the reader in the story in a way i've rarely seen before in IFs

this might sound a bit odd, but i also appreciate the fact that there hasn't been a single flirt option (that i've found at least) so far. so many IFs sometimes feel like they're rushing the romance, like you need to clock in your RO straight away and every interaction you have w them matter just to raise a relationship stat, and that's not a bad thing by itself but it can impair the story and the experience if not done well. this IF has been a bit of a breath of fresh air, like there's no rush, you can take your time getting to know the characters and build your MC and get immersed in the universe without worrying abt every single option you pick... its just nice! it feels good, having the time to know the characters before having to choose what kind of relationship you'll have w them, when so often you have to do the opposite

your writing feels alive, and i love it so much. that's all i wanted to say, i can't wait to see what happens next in the story! hope you're having a good day!!

hello!!!! thank you so so much for the wonderful ask, i've been re-reading it a lot the past few days as i've been writing haha. i can't say enough how much it's given me a boost recently.

honestly i just really love writing about people! chop shop has so many people with problems trying to navigate the world, whether it's the random couple on the train, one of the crew members, or even the PC.

i think the best advice i've ever gotten writing wise is the world you create is only as interesting as the side characters. they're a really great tool to present exposition and details about the world without a long build up or attachment.

also i'm so glad you've brought up the flirt thing haha. PC is in a very stressful situation right now!!! i can't imagine thinking about romance with all the shit that's going on. kidnapping, blackmail, bribery, debt problems etc etc. the romances to me are more variation then actual routes if that makes any sense. if PC and a crew member end up having feelings or relations then it'll add more complications down the line when PC is making some definitive choices during the end game.

Something I don't like so much about the latest Venom comics is the sudden victimization of the symbiote regarding their decisions in life.

This thing about Symby never wanting to do anything bad and almost putting all the blame on Eddie for the events in which they were Spiderman's villains

This whole "If we didn't do it, Eddie was going to die, It was my responsibility" thing. When we know that in the early comics the symbiote didn't give a shit about Eddie.

I believe you that at first Symby didn't necessarily want to kill Peter. But after that, any chance Spider-Man gave the symbiote to come back to him, Symby was willing to abandon Eddie in the middle of the street, naked and likely to die or try to kill himself again.

Until, of course, they realized that Spiderman didn't give a shit about them and decided that they wouldn't fall for his traps anymore and would stay with Eddie "permanently".

We understand it now, and we think it's beautiful that the symbiote felt a responsibility to help Eddie. But that's the current writers changing the story to make the symbiote look like a white dove and not what it is. An effectively bad and toxic person.

That many times is willing to kill and/or manipulate others in order to obtain a perfect symbiosis. Like when they manipulated Eddie into believing that he had cancer or when they tried to kill the priest of that church because he told Eddie that no one can force you to do things you don't want to do.

And this is not just an attitude they had with Spiderman. But also with Eddie himself.

I understand the whole point of the symbiote's redemption. Realizing that they past actions are wrong and wanting to do better in the future. My problem is how the writers are handling it.

It's not like Eddie's redemption, where he realizes that he as a person is wrong for everything he did. It's more taken from the perspective where Symby almost blames Eddie for his destructive attitudes against Spiderman. When it's evident that the symbiote tends to seriously hurt those who don't follow things the way they wants them to go.

I feel like the way things are put is right... but wrong. I read it and feel like something is off, like it doesn't feel the way it should feel.

Because we get a “I never really wanted to do any of this,” and then we get a “I don’t like fighting Eddie... am I?” Which tells me that the symbiote isn’t really giving up on itself, because it’s doing the same thing it always does. Trying to kill a host and then attaching to it when it gets the chance to come back. What changed then?

What was the point of this whole emo phase where the symbiote sought to end its own life? Did something change, or is Symby just wallowing in self-pity like Eddie did when he was Anti Venom and Venom and any other phase of his life xd

Maybe they are made for each other. I love Symby, but they've been trying to excuse it's past actions for a while now, and I can only watch the symbiote lying in the dirt while waiting for others to tell them "it's not true, you're not bad, you can still change."

And the symbiote pretends to believe it as it goes and repeats its past actions to the letter.

I'll end by comparing the quests that imo really highlight how differently they're treated: In Memoriam vs Spirits of the Dalish. Compassion in Docktown wants to know the victim's names and you have to learn about each one, humanizing them, and the quest impacts the spirit so much it ends up becoming Eulogy, dedicating itself to memorializing them. Whereas in Arlathan it's easy to miss the nameless wailing spirit, and the whole quest consists of finding out the ways in which a whole Dalish clan died in increasingly brutal ways (did they cry out for Mythal in their final moments? Could Morrigthal hear them? There's a whole forest full of elves turned into trees, but she's too busy staring into space in the Veil Jumper camp, waiting for u to collect all the wolf statuettes)🙄 To soothe the spirit tho, you have to jump through some extra hoops (lol) and perform some final rites that end up feeling very performative bc the writers couldn't be arsed to make up anything about them and Rook says some generic shit like they were mothers and brothers and sisters and lovers, amen!🙏(seriously, Bellara has nothing to contribute? Did no Veil Jumper know them?) And the spirit is calmed bc it finds out they were more than their deaths which is v ironic. It just feels like a pathetic band-aid meant to cover up an ugly festering wound they just made deeper by not even mentioning the Dalish in the letters where u find out the South is gone (not even a Dalish Inquisitor mentions them, guess Solas cares more about the Dalish than she does, lmao - I jest, I know this is bc the writers simply didn't spare them a second thought, but that's exactly the Problem!)... Sorry, I'll shut up now, thank you for your time XD

I'm curious, what were the events that led to Jabber draining a toon in front of others? Since he's trying not to draw attention to himself and all.

He didn't! When i mentioned the other players' reactions were priceless, I was talking about the other players and not their characters. XD

You see, while working at Googie's Diner, Jabber had sorta befriended a mouse npc named Scrabbles. They were occasional co-conspirators for causing mischief and snagging free food from said diner, stuff like that. It didn't quite scratch the same itch as getting into trouble with his sibs, but it was better than nothing. Jabber was chatty about almost everything imaginable but he barely ever talked about his personal life, and was certainly not the open book that Scrabbles was, but they were pals at the very least- probably the closest Jabber's had to having a friend.

Since Jabber was fading pretty badly at the start of the game, Scrabbles offered to try and find a way to help him out in exchange for free fries. Said he had friends that could sneak them onto sets just to get a little bit of screen time. Jabber knew it wouldn't be enough to help him- he and his sibs used to sneak onto sets all the time in the early days... But he kept his trap shut and accepted anyway, it would be easier than trying to explain and opening up that whole can of worms. Scrabbles never even knew he had siblings.

At this point in the game, I should add, the other players didn't know who he was an expy of yet, just that he was one. The only things they knew about Jabber at that point were the description I gave of him at the start of the game, how he acted, whatever sparse few things about himself he WAS willing to talk about with Scrabbles and Muddy, and some out of character clues I dropped here and there when we were figuring out character relationships and what the other player characters might already know about him.

As the plot progressed, another player character Kay T.K. (our resident Sesame-Street-esque puppet gal who's show was about making fun crafts AND making friends!) had managed to track down Jabber because she remembered how easily he had snuck into her set during filming once, ages ago... And she needed his help to get a magical artifact that could solve a big problem she was dealing with (her show got bought out by schlock horror studio Buzzsaw Studios and they were reviving her as a mascot horror monster, but she didn't want to keep living in the twisted, scary form they'd given her and just wanted to be her old self again). What's the artifact? Something extremely powerful, that was mostly seen as a myth akin to the Holy Grail...

The Typewriter that writes The Script. Of reality itself.

And somehow, this powerful godly artifact ended up in the hands of Buzzsaw Studios, up at the very tippy top floor under lock and key. Kay T.K. needed someone who could slip past the guards and help her get to it so she could write herself back to normal. And well, if anyone's capable of slipping past security guards and defenses, it'd probably be this toon kid who's been doing it since the 1930s!

Jabber wholeheartedly agreed to help her out, but primarily because he wanted to get his hands on that Typewriter for himself.

If reviving his sibs would take a miracle, then well... He would Take a miracle!

Problem was, he was getting too faded to be of much use. His abilities were severely weakened and at the rate he was going, he'd be gone before their planned heist even started. He needed his strength back, and most importantly he needed to buy himself some more time...

So he got Scrabbles those fries.

Met up with him in the alley outside the diner at night, when everyone had left, and... As Scrabbles snacked happily on them, Jabber thanked him for being such a good friend and, shockingly, finally opened up to him. Told him about his sibs. Told him about how they were created to be zany, but were too much so for the studio's liking. How they were locked away for so long, left to fade away...

But it was all going to be okay now. Because he found a way to fix everything.

And that's when he opened up his jaws, now lined with sharp teeth, and chomped down on him.

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT, THAT WAS THE LOVELY CLIFFHANGER I LEFT MY FRIENDS WITH FOR THE END OF PART 1. Like I said, their reactions? Priceless. XD

I was rereading old posts for lore tidbits bc I was bored, and I somehow just realized that the unforgivable thing Tic-Tac did was separate from the Christmas incident. I swear, my brain’s dead half the time lol. Buuuuut… can I ask what it was? Or is that going to be a future plot point like the Christmas incident (At least, I think you said the Christmas thingy was going to be a future plot point?) Apologies if this was asked before!

Now worries at all! I may have mentioned it before at some point, butttt I have no problems answering again, especially since I have yet to add many of the lore rambles to the masterpost XD. Either way, never be afraid of asking a question that may have been asked. Anyways, for the question itself:

You're completely right. The unforgivable thing is separate from the Christmas incident. Previous to the unforgivable thing, Vox may have hated his brother, but he was still family, you know? It was an incredible toxic mindset, but there's was still the nebulous hope that, possibly someday, Tacitus would or could grow out of being...well, himself.

But after the unforgivable thing? Yeah, his family was kinda dead to him at that point, especially Tac.

They still hung around afterwards, visiting from time to time, mostly because Vox had money, power, and influence now. Vox, himself, had problems cutting them out entirely still, namely because of his attachment issues and because of media perception. That and there was a small part of him that liked having them around because he liked having proven them wrong this whole time. Despite everything they used to think, he's the one that made it big. He's the one that sprang up and made something of himself. He succeed despite everything they put him through, and despite everything they said. So, there was a little part of him that liked them having to eat crow to his face, in a sense.

The Christmas incident changed everything though cause, well, they went after Alastor. And nobody gets to do that. Especially in front of Vox. And especially not in his house. Realistically, it probably wasn't too far off from the kinda of stuff they've always been doing to him (which is still objectively horrible), however just the fact that they targeted the love of his life? Yeah, that was the end of that.

In many ways, it was easier for him to stand up to them for Alastor's sake than his own.

The unforgivable thing, by itself, is going to be addressed in the future. Alastor himself doesn't actually know anything about it, or that it even happened. It's part of the reason he still wanted Vox to speak to his family; he doesn't know how bad it was between them to begin with. Vox, up to now, has never told him about the unforgivable thing. When the two of them sit down and talk about why Vox actually hates his family, that will be when I'll be showing that specific plot-point in flashback form. I've kept the details of it vague on purpose, but it's kinda part of the reason Vox is, well, himself. There's a lot from it that informs how he learned certain behaviors.

I will say, as a spoiler-esq hint, that much in the same way that Drift being afraid of loud noises comes from his past (and will also be addressed in the future), Vox is haunted by things he's seen and experienced ;)

I'll leave the rest for a different day though!

When Yuebei wad born, Wukong most CERTAINLY went into a medical coma as well. Like, no joke... in Century Egg au, Wukong had gone into labor with potentially he best case scenario and still almost died... wit Yuebai in Slowboiled we've got a Wukong who's been several centuries overdue, had his magic literally running on empty during time, the moment he gets even somewhat decent he then gets strapped to a web and used as a battery, only to then have a madrush that took at minimum the better part of a month and was most likely more to find a weapon, then his powers were fucking short circuited in a magic barrier and then drained even more. Another madrush this time being pushed by his own deceased mate who he is fairly certain hates him and wants him dead, burned by Samhadi Fire, fought an ice with, and then possessed by said ice witch and forced to be used as a weapon against his own troupe, his own adopted cub and mate included. And only AFTER all that he ended up going into labor in some random campsight xD

Thats a good point to bring up.

Another major distinction is that Yuebei (SlowBoiled) was present for many of Wukong's experiences along the Journey, and literally ate the entire soul of ancient being just before she was born. Wukong likely only survives birthing Yuebei because she fully consumed another being's dao (LBD) instead of his own.

And even with Macaque at his side at last, Wukong is still running on empty once the Egg is born. Yuebei is probably still hangs out in her shell for a while before hatching from all the physical/mental stress her parent just went through.

In the meantime, Wukong has disconnected from the chat and has to do a major recharge before he can start waking up again. It really scares the gang at first, but Guanyin manages to soothe their worries that Wukong's physical reaction is super normal given the circumstances.

He just eepy, give him a few minutes days.

MK: "What about the egg itself? Does it take super long to hatch?" Guanyin (honestly doesn't know): "I'll... get back to you on that." Macaque, ears fluttering happily: "Don't worry. Cub's ok for now, she's just being lazy." MK: "How can you tell?" Macaque: *points at his ears and then to the Egg, smiling wide* "She snores like Wukong does." Yuebei, safetly in Egg: *tiny snoring sounds*

It's also part of the reason Macaque is super cuddly of Wukong before and after the Egg arrives. Stone Monkey instincts tell him to provide as much warmth and emotional support as possible to his mate and his immediate troop members.

Macaque would even sacrifice his own life energy/dao to ensure Wukong survives Yuebei's arrival.

If Guanyin didn't point out something super off about his own body.

Guanyin, doing a check-up on Wukong: "Liu'er Mihou - when where you buried?" Macaque, confused: "Buried? The heck you talking about? When I died I'm pretty sure my whole body got dragged into the Underworld." Guanyin, eyes widening: "Oh-no." Macaque: "What oh-no?" Guanyin: *performs a small spell on Macaque's stomach. Two distinct egg-shaped silhouettes appear* Macaque: *struck silent* Guanyin: "It appears that the Lady Bone Demon physically taking you into her Realm, and likely beneath the earth, caused your body to respond in the same manner as Wukong's when he was buried by the Buddha's hand." Macaque: *pokes stomach* "...why is there two?" Wukong, groggily after days of medical coma: "Two what??" Macaque & Guanyin: *shrieks of joy!*

Yuebei hatches shortly thereafter, causing greater celebration amongst the little troop. Macaque decides to tackle his problem later.

Any thoughts on new Kiyi, Mai, and Zuko centered comic?

"An all-new stand-alone Avatar graphic novel! Kiyi, half-sister to Fire Lord Zuko, enrolls at the Royal Fire Academy for Girls! Known for its strict curriculum and even stricter instructors, Zuko worries for Kiyi."

When things take a turn for the worse and a seed of doubt about the new headmistress is planted, Zuko takes action by installing one of the people he trusts most, Mai, as an academy teacher. Can Mai keep a watchful eye over Kiyi and keep her on the right path, or will the academy’s cruel culture shape her footsteps into those of her other half-sibling, Azula?"

I'm looking forward to this one! As an active member of the Maiko Support Community, I'm of course happy to see Mai back in the storyline with a setup that could lead to finally resolving this Breakup plotline. I'm also just so happy that this is coming out in March 2025, so I might be able to actually make a progress report on my Maiko Timeline next time! XD

I think Hicks has the pacing and storytelling skills to give Mai some decent focus even if Kiyi is the main character. The recent Iroh&June comic showcases it, even if I don't think that one brought all its themes together. Fortunately, fixing Mai's problems with Zuko isn't as thorny as the morality of Iroh's life, and there are any number of good short fanfics which manage it quite well. @privatefire has one I really like that's only 18k words, and if a picture is, as they say, worth a thousand words, then something similar would require only 18 panels at minimum. XD I even wrote one in 19k words which had room left over for an Assassination subplot and a secondary romantic couple.

I've never been enthusiastic about Kiyi, but of course I'm not a fan of Gene Yang's Avatar writing at all, so it's possible Faith Erin Hicks will make me like the character. I'm also interested in a good look at the Girls Academy, as we've gotten some interesting hints about the nature of the place in the Kyoshi novels- and at the NYCC panel where they announced this comic, the lead designer on the Avatar RPG talked about how he ran a cool long-term playtesting session set there. I just want to know why we haven't heard about a Boys Academy at all; was Zuko home-schooled? If so, why?

The mention of Azula is interesting, as we've never heard much about her connection to the academy; the cartoon just hinted that it was where she met Mai and Ty Lee. Of course, in the world of fanfic (professional'n'approved-by-Avatar-Studios or otherwise), throwaway references have to become major aspects of character history and worldbuilding, hence why there's apparently no equivalent academy for boys. That said (rather snarkily), I suspect we won't get much about Azula in this comic, perhaps a quick mention about how she thrived in such a harsh environment. I wouldn't mind this new Harsh Headmistress has some memories of Azula, either as her teacher or maybe even a fellow student (upperclassmen?), which could be the impetuous for some change at the Academy.

I'm interested in the idea that Zuko thinks Kiyi could potentially become like Azula, but that's a rather fraught story-path which could either alleviate or exacerbate all the talk about how the point of Kiyi's character is to be The Good Daughter and prove that all Azula's problems are Ozai's fault. Not that Azula's problems don't mostly stem from Ozai, but Kiyi is a rather ham-fisted way of conveying that, and it buries some of the extra nuance of problems with the whole Royal Family and Fire Nation society itself. But the Academy could be a good way of showing some of those societal issues, so this comic might be aiming for a good target.

I also really like the idea of Mai finding a calling as a teacher or similar role-model, giving her a role to play in this generational Redemption Of The Fire Nation. That's actually something I've played with, so I'm delighted at the possibility of seeing it become canon.

So, overall, I'm rather enthusiastic for this comic. Even a girl sitting behind me at the announcement and saying out loud that she never liked Zuko and Mai as a couple could ruin my mood.

Since the release of the graphic novel is coming closer I want to talk about how I see the moon. Or rather write down what I think the moon is.

Scratching my head...yeah so...I mean you know. I just did an energy activation yesterday and the description to it said something like “today we are on a galactic ship...”. Just to give you and understanding of the things that I like to do XD

To me nothing special but to most humans probably more something like “she is bat sh*t crazy”. I'm not here to convice you of anything. I'm writing down how I see this.

So...I'm outside in the dark a lot. I like going on early morning runs or walks with my dog and one half of the year it's usually still dark outside when I do that. It's so calm and peaceful and quiet at that time of the day.

I love it.

Sometimes I just plain stare at the moon and “feel” into the moon rather then just look at it.The problem....?! It feels empty and hollow. As if it is not even there.

I once heard that the moon is something that reflects the sun and also shows earth in it. It looks like a reflection of earth. And the strange thing about the moon...we always see the same side.

Anyway...so me being out in the dark a lot.

I saw the moon reboot itself a couple of times now....it was flickering and just came back. Like a lamp that goes off shortly and comes right back.

Don't ask me what the moon really is....like I said it just gives me a weird feeling. Maybe something like a satellite?

I also once heard that earth actually used to have real moons. The one that we see now is fake. What happened to those moons? They fell on earth, causing a giant tsunami and basically erasing life on this planet.

A little like it's described in the director's notes of that graphic novel.

Maybe what Vessel haunted in his dreams what a memory of that great tragedy? I mean “the day that oceans recede” right...? First the oceans recede and then a giant wave comes and floods everything.

Idk...that whole graphic novel is not that important to me.

I always knew that this planet never was my home. I just never really understood that the home I was looking for is a frequency and it's inside of me still. I can access it. That and also this strange feeling of beloging to this planet but remembering it in a different way. Not cold and no war or ego-driven humans and all of that. As if humanity forgot who they actually are. They just forgot at some point. Kowing this place...earth...just differently.

I could just continue about “the code” that Vessel sings about...Maybe I do that another time. The matrix...that movie...not a movie XD. Maybe I write about that next.

Here’s a little zosky doodle for your travels

Hi there!! First of all THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SUCH A LOVELY MESSAGE waughh you've totally made my day!! 🥺🫶 Always love meeting another fan, and I'm so so touched to hear you enjoy my work! Secondly, I'm very glad you asked this, because it's something I've been thinking about lately. My explanation may be a little complicated, but the short version is that yes, it is still in the works!

The long answer is that progress was going very steady up until February 2023 when my mother passed away, which I believe was also when my K&Z posting slowed down. There's a long story within a long story there, but the gist of it is that I've been in a very bad place ever since then. I can't be sure exactly why the event made me drift from K&Z, but I suspect it was because my mom was so looking forward to seeing my video, and the thought that she never would, well...it really messed with me.

With that being said, I'm handling my grief a lot better these days. While things are still in a state of major uncertainty for a whole host of other reasons, I think I've mostly come to terms with that flavor of discontent. I see the project sitting unfinished in my files and I think about how close I am to being done with it, and I know she'd want me to do it. I want to do it, too! I worked very hard!

I began working on it again for the first time in like two years about two weeks ago. Over an hour of content was already fully edited and ready, it's just my last addendum that I need to work on. I'm hitting another problem now, and that is that a lot of my sources have vanished since I wrote the script, so, frustratingly enough, all I can really offer is a "trust me, bro" for quite a few points! But I think the big ones should still be there.

If anyone takes anything from this, I want it to be that you shouldn't wait to finish things, because you won't be the same person you were when you began. Nonetheless, again, it's only that last part, which I suspect shouldn't be more than likeee...ten minutes long? A drop in the bucket compared to the rest, for sure. Unfortunately it's also the most exciting part x'D Oh well, I'll figure it out!

I do still love K&Z, and I know I always will. I have a lot of requests saved up involving them, and I'd love to draw them when I'm in a better place. When I get depressed, I get art block, so only my biggest hyperfixations manage to barge past every now and again, which is why I've been so inactive in general. Nonetheless, I do check back here every day, so I'm always happy to answer any questions!

I'm gonna have a lot of free-time in April, so I'll try to get some more work on it done then for sure. Hopefully I'll be in a much better place as a whole come summertime. Thank you for the support, it really does make me feel excited for it again!
