Day One Hundred Sixty-Two
I mentioned yesterday that my World students found Winter On Fire absolutely gripping to watch; they finished watching it today, and they had so many comments and questions afterwards. I’m used to tons of comments and questions from my Block 3 class, but they had more than usual, and my Block 2 class had just as many. It’s a difficult thing to watch because, at times, the violence is shocking, and we spoke about that, too- about why I, as their teacher, chose to show it anyways, and why it’s important to recognize and honor how courageous people were in the face of that violence rather than glorifying the violence itself.
Once everyone had said everything they wanted to say, we read an article about some of the key things that happened after the Euromaidan: the annexation of Crimea, the insurgency in Donbas, the Minsk Agreements, US policy under President Obama then President Trump, Covid-19, the Russian military build-up throughout 2021, and the start of the war in 2022. We’ll pick up there tomorrow.
Attendance in APGOV was back to normal, and that’s probably because I gave a quiz- students’ last vocab quiz ever!!!!!- before allowing them to work on their projects for the remainder of the block. While most of the ones who were absent yesterday and/or the day before had legitimate reasons for their absences, there were definitely some just feeling the senioritis, and having to make up a quiz at a later date would have made that feel worse.
The other major thing that happened during the school day wasn’t an ALICE drill, but... maybe we could call it ALICE practice? The administration has opted not to do full drills with the alarms blaring and the police in the halls (and, for that, I’m claiming at least a partial victory), but on Monday we watched a video explaining ALICE, and today during flex block we were all instructed to take a few minutes to discuss enhanced lockdowns: how to barricade doors, that sort of thing. It sucks, and I hate it, and it puts everyone on edge... but we got through it.
Track practice was cold and windy- it didn’t crack 50 here today, it was ridiculous- so the sprinters just did 100m repeats/100m recovery, stretched, and called it a day. It’s post-season, we’re tapering, everyone’s shins are getting a little beat up, so there was no need to do anymore than that. Even so, my cheeks were totally windburned by the time it was done! Hopefully, seasonable weather returns tomorrow!

I'm currently wearing 1 top, 1 thin hoodie, 2 (!) thick hoodies, and my jacket, I'm inside a train (probably at least 21 degrees) and I'm still shaking as if i was outside in the snow, wearing nothing but a summer dress

It's cold as balls right now. 3° and the heating can't actually cope with how suddenly the temperature dropped.
We went out today because there was actual sunshine but it was bitterly cold. My face hurt from the sting and within 20 minutes of just going around a small market, my joints had seized up and my back was going into a spasm. I was dressed warmly, 3 tee shirts, a jumper then a coat, thick trousers and 2 pairs of socks with my new winter boots. It wasn't enough and my circulation packed up.
It took me 4 hours to thaw out and I'm currently cuddled up with my fleece throw and the cat, watching Taskmaster on Netflix.
Winter can fuck off!
Arthritis can fuck off!
Hypermobility syndrome can fuck off!
Spinal spondylosis can definitely fuck off!
Marcus is making me food in the hopes it will warm me up and improve my mood.

Day One Hundred Thirty-Seven
It’s supposedly going to start snowing in a couple hours, and even the born-and-raised north country kids I teach just want it to warm up already and stop doing that. The spring athletes are especially frustrated. No one’s on the fields, we’re barely on the track (my sprinters did 150m repeats today in the cold), I get it. So I’m crossing my fingers that it’s just rain, not snow, but the forecast isn’t looking good.
Aside from grumblings about the weather, though, the only other issue I had today was a minor incident Block 2. There are two boys who constantly play-fight (despite having been asked to stop), and today one hit the other harder than he meant to, the other swore at the top of his lungs, I sent them both to the office to talk to Dean 1. They came back about twenty minutes later and apologized, and we moved on. Five minutes later, we’re cracking jokes and doing work, it’s all good.
The assignment today was an information hunt- so it doubled as citation practice- about the US government. I prefaced it with a quick lecture through the history that led up to the drafting of the Constitution, and explained that the information they’re supposed to find addressed the challenges the country was facing at the time of its drafting, as well as future challenges. We’ll go over the answers tomorrow, then talk more about other democratic republics in the world, and how they differ from ours.
Oh, and during my Block 3 class I gave into the online chess craze. Two of my students finished the assignment with about fifteen minutes to spare, and they were playing against each other, so I said I wanted to play the winner. I wasn’t actually sure I could win- I’m a decent player, but it’s been a while- and it was a close match, but I pulled it off.
Instant cred for me.
Heh.
Block 4, my APGOV students and I started class by discussing the former president’s arraignment, then shifted to discussing the state of civil rights in this country. There was a tangent, too, about divisive concepts laws. I showed them the one on the books in our state, and an addition that was proposed last year but didn’t pass (and they remarked that, had it passed, I’d have broken the law repeatedly). Lastly, we did a bit of test review, since there’s a full-sized practice exam in their immediate futures: MCQs tomorrow, FRQs on Friday.
Amusing: I post a review outline at the start of each unit, with any new concepts highlighted and bolded, and during test review I tell them they can ask me anything about it. Today they realized that, despite the fact that there are obviously more concepts on each test, the review sheet has never been more than a page with two columns of information, and it doesn’t seem like I’m changing the font.
I am, of course, but only slightly, and obviously I didn’t admit to that. Instead, I told them that I’m a wizard.
Which is also accurate.
