in lieu of a second chance
10:30pm, sunday, may 12, 2024
wow oh man i have forgotten how to do this!! but it's spring, it's the end of the term, it's the start of a new season and a new burst of creativity and, perhaps, a different routine-- so let's try again.
reading audio-books and ebooks have been my absolute constant companions all winter, but shout-out to the stack of paperbacks on my bedside table, which i am slowly but surely working through. finished italo calvino's if on a winter's night a traveler (a loan from @hematiterings), part of my now intentional quest to read calvino's whole oeuvre, and basically loved it. the whole 'first chapters of various novels you'll never get the rest of' was such a good way to showcase a bunch of cliches from, like, mid-century literary fiction. very meta, and very fun. the connective frame narrative, in second person, was a little more of a stretch (again, very mid-century literary self-referential/ironic/whatever, which unfortunately i did find amusing)-- and calvino's female characters are not great, except for in the nonexistent knight's narrator who i loved)-- but there was a section addressed to a female reader which did, in fact, feel like it read me for absolute filth. other finished reads from the last few months which i will mention here briefly: the angel of the crows, katherine addison; our wives under the sea, julia armfield; the bell in the fog, lev ac rosen; the nutmeg's curse, amitav ghosh; the ruin of kings, jenn lyons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
listening this would have been different if i'd written this last week, but have y'all heard beyonce's album cowboy carter?! i know i'm a few months late but i actually feel like i'm years late, like i haven't responded to a beyonce album this strongly maybe ever. i love the covers, i love the vocal layering and harmonies, i love the samples from old timey radio and everything familiar and texas and country about it...i keep thinking i have a favorite track, but genuinely i like listening to this one all the way through, as a cohesive album, as a work in itself. have a pitchfork review. pull quote:
"On Cowboy Carter, Club Renaissance is swapped out for KNTRY Radio Texas, an AM station hosted by an ever-hazy Willie Nelson. Here she re-contextualizes roots music—Americana, folk, country—for a contemporary moment, reminding listeners that Black artists were the genesis of these forms and never stopped playing them, despite what Hollywood or Nashville might have on offer....Despite drawing from the kitsch and fun of ’70s and ’80s country music, Cowboy Carter has an air of melancholy to it, a quality that reverberates through the scores of songs in minor keys about loneliness on the range.
youtube
^^ this is a playlist of the whole album on youtube, if you're into that. AMERIICAN REQUIEM, the opening track, is what hooked me-- i was in from the opening notes. but TEXAS HOLD EM' is also great. fuck yeah, rhiannon giddens.
watching so in addition to rewatching the entire sixth season of dropout's game changer today, last week we finished a truly wild show out of netflix italy: la legge di lidia poët / the law according to lidia poët, which is a historical mystery-romance like only netflix can make. is it bridgerton but for ninteenth century italian lawyers? is it the girlbossification of an actually interesting historical figure? yes, maybe, but everyone is very attractive and the costumes are bonkers in a satisfying way. she has insect themed jewellery, rides a bike, has a lot of sex, finds a decent relationship with her brother and, god help me, i do want a second season.
Tumblr media
featuring, hey isn't that pasquale from my brilliant friend? and wow, they probably think this song choice is really cool but it is so on the nose in english it is almost distracting.
playing hollow knight! hollow knight. hollow knight. it's become a problem, actually, since i have quite literally turned my evening yoga time into gamer time, and would you believe, i am less flexible and have higher anxiety levels lmaoo. but i'm getting so powerful i don't care. i probably can't promise myself to beat this game any time soon, and should stop thinking i can, but look! two dreamers down?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
making patched the inner thighs of some jeans-- they will probably remain weekend pants, but they're further from dead than they were. similarly, clumsily darned a hole in my sweater. baked a caffeinated cake courtesy of a b. dylan hollis video (coffee loaf from 1959) . glued a wooden salad tong back together and i feel like the seams are actually quite subtle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(this wood glue claims to be food safe after curing, pray for me etc etc).
working on ooof. i am done teaching but still owe two-three students emails. i survived my committee meeting but have done nothing to follow the schedule of deadlines we set me, despite being so excited to back on may 2 / so energized to do All the Things back on april 26. i have an article to prep to submit! a chapter to finish tweaking (reworking? reframing? changing from the ground up? lololololol)! not to mention a newsletter to draft and copy edits (almost done) to send back on a friend's article! but i can't stop playing hollow knight in all my free time, and really, what's more important here.

Hello! I'm a recent follower and have been loving your advice.
I would like to know more about the good quality jewelry you spoke about in one of your asks, do you have more recommendations on where to buy them? I would love to know more about how to recognize them too.
Thank you!
I know a couple of websites that my friends have bought from like Italo jewellery but I’ve never purchased from them. I don’t want to recommend websites or stores that I haven’t personally purchased from, even if someone close to me has had a good experience.
I don’t wear or buy fake/ plated accessories; everything has to be as pure as possible, whether it’s gold, diamonds, gemstones or otherwise. Therefore I never purchase online and i avoid designer jewellery like Tiffany or whatever like the plague (the only exception being my van cleef pendant which I adore). I have a seller who lives in the next city to mine who sends his collections to my home, my family has had a relationship with him for many years- we get everything customised and purchase only from him and my aunt who also happens to be a jeweller.

week three - italy
My week three stories definitely gave me something to chew on. More often than not, my readings include a feminist lens so I was able to get a lot of meanings and/or interpretations out of this collection.
The stories this week are: Italo Calvino’s “The Adventure of a Traveler” Natalia Ginzburg’s “The Mother” Alberto Moravia’s “Jewellery” Cesare Pavese’s “Suicides”
I love unreliable narrators and this week 100% has some. The stories all have something to say about the inner lives of their characters and how the perception of these inner lives influences their relationships with the people closest to them. I enjoy the idea of the “inner life”, but I also enjoy sitting in traffic wondering what the other drivers around me are doing with their day, so maybe that’s just a Me Thing.
The first story is “The Adventure of a Traveler” by Italo Calvino, author of the beautiful book Invisible Cities. The story is exactly as the title suggests: our narrator and adventurer, Federico, is traveling to meet his lover Cinzia. There is nothing truly noteworthy that takes place (besides the running commentary telling you exactly how familiar with the train he is), but the outlandishness of Federico’s adventure isn’t the point. Every action he takes on his way to reunite with the woman he loves feels monumental because he is on his way to a monumental thing. Getting ready for sleep, handing out his ticket, speaking with other riders—they are all a part of his adventure, grown to a grander size because of what he knows is waiting for him at his destination. Yet, the emotions of it all are ultimately distorted by how he views the train ride and is, when Federico finally meets with Cinzia, gone quickly from his memory. His perception of the ride as something leading to an extraordinary event made the lead-up itself take on more meaning.
Now we have the inverse narration with Natalia Ginzburg’s (noted Italian anti-Fascist) “The Mother” where the title character is not our narrator. Instead, the narration is conducted by the two sons of the mother in question—and they do not truly know, or love, her. This story is conflicting if you read it with both the sons’ and their mother in mind. The sons rarely interact with their mother and so their idea of maternal care comes from their friends’ mothers, their aunt, and grandmother; to them, their mother is something other. However, this is why I mentioned reading with a feminist lens at the beginning: the boys do not know their mother because they cannot think of her differently. If she is not a Mother like all others, then she is not Anything. This is where the idea of the inner life (or, at least, the perception of other people) comes in; her life outside of her sons is unknowable, unwanted, and embarrassing. She is Not A Mother, but she acts like one (because, to her, she is) and her sons cannot understand her because of this dichotomy.
Speaking of women perceived poorly by men, Alberto Moravia’s “Jewellery” makes me want to chew glass. This is no fault of Moravia, of course, but rather the narration is so familiar in tone that I can almost hear the voice of the football player I had gone to prom with. The men in the story are all so preoccupied with themselves that a single woman - who literally did nothing at all besides exist in their space - had managed to destroy their friendship. Perhaps being gluttonous fools was not a good basis for a lasting relationship - or, at least, one that was deeper than a puddle. To blame a woman for this disintegration rather than their poor behavior, lack of shared interests, and disrespect to a friend’s love interest? I could not roll my eyes hard enough. Lucrezia, as a person, meant nothing to them as a person; she existed to be gawked at and nothing more. Moravia is such a good writer to make me feel such disdain in a single sentence.
Continuing with this trend of men not truly understanding women, we have “Suicides” by Cesare Pavese. Pavese himself has an amazing way of writing men so different from himself; in this case, the narrator is a grossly uninteresting man. He has very little happening in his life - which, to be fair, was something he wanted. To not be fair, none of that should give him the confidence to treat his lover Carlotta so poorly. Carlotta herself is a fool to love such a cruel man, yet I understand her foolishness more than the narrator’s cruelty. He actively wants her, yet he punishes Carlotta for wanting him back ; he is disgusted by her love for him and still he grows uneasy at the thought of her husband winning her over again. It really doesn’t surprise me that Carlotta ends up killing herself (title notwithstanding) with the narrator’s attitude destroying her self-esteem the longer they’re together. She just wanted to be loved and that made him bitter—what a jackass.
Each of these Italian authors have such a good grasp on human nature. While I did not like the people in these stories, that’s the main point of each of the short stories. The most compelling narrator was Federico in “The Adventure of a Traveler” and that’s mainly because he actually enjoyed the company of his female companion as opposed to the other narrators. Each story went in different directions, but they all encompassed the idea some men have about women when they do not live up to the expectations that live in their heads. That bluntness, true when it was written and true now, was - well, not a pleasure to experience, but most certainly not uninteresting.

Luxury Watches For Men
Luxury Watches Guide to Swiss and Italian Brands and Tips on Choosing the Best Timepiece For You
The only really "timeless" piece of jewellery is the watch. From the pocket sequences of yesterday to the wristwatches of today, timepieces are used by women and men across the world for generations. Luxury watches from Switzerland and Italy have always been the most sought-after timepieces. They're created from the best materials imaginable: gold, genuine leather, stainless steel, etc. Some even have diamonds and other precious stone as accents.
There are different styles of luxury watches, ranging from contemporary high tech pilot and diver layouts to elegant designs made out of black metal or leather. The total design can be easy and classy or brassy. Additionally, there are numerous luxury sports watches for athletes.
If you're searching for the best luxury watch, then you can start with brands such as Breitling, TAG Heuer, Rotary, Swiss Legend, and Invicta. There are also watches made in the world's best fashion designers like Calvin Klein and Gucci.
History of Swiss Luxury Watches
Everybody's heard of the term "Swiss-made" before, but where did it originate from? It all began in the 16th century at Geneva when religious leader Jean Calvin managed to garner a great deal of power and influence. He played a part in the banning of jewellery sporting. The jewelers in the nation had to turn to watch-making so as to create a living. This caused the establishment of a new craft, which consequently lead to a lot of competition. Watchmakers needed to think of new ideas and advanced techniques so as to stay a step ahead of their opponents.
A few of those methods are still utilized in watch-making today. In the 1770s, the Perpetual view was invented by Abraham Louis Perrelet. It was the forerunner of the self-winding watches of today. In the early 1800s, Louis Moinet made the first ever chronograph watch.
Today, there's a worldwide market for Swiss luxury watches. They still keep the prestige that they have always had. A number of the manufacturers have been in existence for over 100 decades. Breitling and Movado, for example, have been around since the 1880s.
Each one of the top watch brands provide a set of Swiss made watches. They blend traditional tactics and Swiss made quartz using contemporary features like calendars and water resistant technologies.
Tumblr media
Italian Luxury Watches
When it comes to style, anything that's Italian made is considered to be among the maximum quality possible. This is true where watches are worried as well. As many contemporary timepieces are mass produced by machines, there are still a couple of series here and there that completely handcrafted. Panerai and Bulgari are just two Italian brands which are well-known due to their handcrafted pieces. Italian flair combined with Swiss watch-making methods: the elegance of some of these watches is immeasurable.
You will find Italian luxury watches which appeal to flight enthusiasts. The U-Beat pieces in particular stand out using their strong cases and massive dials. Each and every piece is handcrafted by experts. The layouts were originally made for the Italian Navy in 1942 by engineer Ilvo Fontana. But, it wasn't until the year 2000 when his grandson, Italo Fontana, found the designs that they were eventually brought to life.
As noted above, many prestigious fashion designers and brands offer a series of luxury watches. If you'd like accessories to go with your own Armani dress, Gucci handbag, Calvin Klein match, etc., you can find an Italian watch to match.
Choosing the Best Luxury Watch
With each one the classy Italian and Swiss timepieces on the market, how do you narrow down the choices?
Here are a couple pointers that will assist you choose.
Your budget is one of the very first things to think about. Luxurious and designer watches are not all expensive. Some can be quite reasonably priced. An entry or mid-range luxury piece might be ideal for you if you do not need to invest in a luxury watch.
You ought to think about the design. As you'll be wearing it against your skin, it should be made from materials you would discover comfortable. The straps can be reached from alligator leather, high quality rubber, stainless steel, nylon, etc..
Be sure to choose a timepiece with a high-quality case. The situation can be made from cheap materials such as vinyl to expensive materials such as 14kt gold. In most contemporary designs, platinum is becoming a popular choice because of its durability. Titanium instances are good options too as it's a light material and doesn't create your wrist feel weighted down.
As for the colour, you will find there are timepieces that contain every color and mix of colors imaginable. Whether you want a neutral color, pastel colour, or bold and brassy color, now's watch manufacturers offer all these.
Why are you looking for a watch at the first place? Do you want to store it for special events or wear it daily? If it's the latter, then you might want to go with a neutral layout. It's important to choose a piece that matches your personal style.
Tumblr media
In addition to this layout and manufacturer, it's also wise to think of the true craftsmanship and mechanics of timepieces. Would you rather have automatic watches or chronographs? What type of dial would you rather have? How do you want the numbers and markers to be exhibited? What about a analog watch?
Speaking of dials and markers, readability is among the most important factors. It would be a waste of cash to buy a luxury watch if you can not read the time readily. Some dials feature Arabic numerals, some feature Roman numerals, and a few feature tiny diamonds representing the amounts. Contrast is important also. The colour of the mark and numbers should contrast nicely with the colour of the hands and dial.
These are a few of the questions to ask while looking for luxury watches. Go with a brand that is renowned for its exceptional timepiece technology and craftsmanship. Just like with any luxury accessory or thing, there are some fakes on the market. Ensure you will receive a 100% authenticity guarantee before purchasing a timepiece - particularly if it's a higher-end version.
The best place to look for luxury watches is online. You can look over enormous collections of Italian, Swiss, and other luxury watches. You will also find discounts which will allow you to save on designer wristwatches. Just be cautious and just order from an online store that has a good reputation. The First Monday In May: Met Gala 2017
From Influencers, Actresses, Singers to Supermodels; the A-Listers ascended the famous stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night. Congregating for an occasion that is as extravagant as it is opulent, the annual Met Gala in New York City.
Perhaps the most highly anticipated event in the fashion calendar, an array of breath-taking gowns (and handsome custom suits for the male attendees) designed to fit with the theme of the exhibition “Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” gathered for the event hosted by Anna Wintour. Look no further than the archives of the Comme des Garçons runway collections to get an idea of the flamboyancy created by Japanese designer, Rei and with ‘avant-garde’ in mind, join me as I revisit some of my most memorable looks from the night…
1. Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger Collection
From the sweeping hair, bleached brows and bold winged eyeliner, the makeup alone brought enough drama before the striking nude dress itself. The asymmetric ensemble was a deconstructed jacket merged with a tulle ballgown, which included a train that delicately followed behind. The look combined classic couture and contemporary in an equally captivating and sultry manner.
Styled by Mimi Cuttrell, Hair by Bryce Scarlett, Makeup by Erin Parsons, Jewellery by Jacquie Aiche.

2. Candice Swanepoel in Bespoke Topshop
The new mother swapped her white-feathered wings for a look that resembled a magnificent dark enchantress. The devastatingly gorgeous ballgown featured a voluminous skirt, emphasising her delicate waistline whilst the diamond jewellery ignited just the right amount of sparkle. The swept back hairstyle revealed her dark set eye makeup, complementing the all-black ensemble.

3. Lily-Rose Depp in Chanel
A vision to take your breath away, Lily looked the purest form of feminine elegance. The ballgown in a bold pink hue featured floral motifs and matching earrings as its only accessory. 4. Taylor Hill in Carolina Herrera
Vamp-esque cranberry tones on the eyes and a wine coloured gown proved a stunning success for the model. 5. Bella Hadid in Alexander Wang
Using the event as an opportunity to debut her newly cropped tresses and substituting a ball gown for the alternative body sculpting approach, the dark and smouldering look oozed a feline aesthetic courtesy of the intricately beaded catsuit. Complete with a simple beauty look, the model ensured all of the attention remained on the barely-there creation.

What are some inexpensive jewelry pieces worth purchasing?
By inexpensive I understand that you mean stuff that isn’t fully real. I don’t buy anything that’s not real, but a website you could check out is Italo Jewellery.
I know that Nomberry is like a luxury repurposer, but I’ve read reviews saying that their stuff can be fake. And for the prices that they offer, it’s honestly a good bargain.
However, I’ve never purchased anything from either of these websites, so buy carefully.
If you’re talking about the types of pieces itself, then you should consider buying as a beginner:
1. Diamond tennis bracelet
2. A gold bangle
3. A pair of solitaire earrings
4. A simple pendant for everyday wear
5. A beautiful watch
