Okay okay, listen, Night Watch is an absolute masterpiece of storytelling. It’s done so well I want to scream. Not only do we, the readers, know that the revolution will end in tears, the protagonist of the story knows it too!
Vimes goes into this with the exact same expectations as the reader of here we go, we know we’re in a tragedy, we’re know we’re doomed by the narrative. AND YET, AND YET as the story goes on, you start to hope that maybe, just maybe, something will be different this time.
Even Vimes starts to entertain the idea, but every time this happens, you get reminded (by the History Monks) that No. This is only going to go one way. This. is. a. Tragedy.
BUT STILL. These are good people and look, some things have gone better this time, maybe it’s enough? Vimes always wins in the end, doesn’t he? And so you HOPE and by hoping, you wilfully forget what you’ve been told again and again, that this is a tragedy.
AND THEN THEY GET SO CLOSE. SO FREAKING CLOSE that when it all goes wrong you feel surprised, even though you were told from the very beginning how it was going to go.
It’s insane. It’s Terry Pratchett at his finest. Its’s a goddammed masterpiece.
Gotta say I really admire the dedication to the concept of "horror game where you can flirt with people" being so strong as to also let you flirt with the horrors

oceangate evolves further the more we talk about it so if youd like to see the other previous developments in concerns to it...
and also because its funny here are some of the times the cup has been held near or above water both salt, fresh and chlorine alike since oceangate in no particular order
and i just think its very clear when oceangate happened because now everyones holding the cup high above the water/near bodies of water and not letting it get dunked
but pre-oceangate the cup was just dunked in maffhews pool hours after they won it (which was before they went to las olas and welp the rest is history)
It's always "Shou and Ritsu need to blow stuff up with their minds for mental health reasons" or Ritsu and Teru or even Shou and Teru!
But what about Mob? When does he get to blow stuff up with his mind for funsies? For shits and giggles? He didn't go through all of those meltdowns and character development for nothing, let him go ham on a junkyard car or something smh

Y'know what, I think maybe I don't need any more Murderbot books. I think maybe ending things here is fucking perfect and as much as I love Wells's writing I'm genuinely not sure it can get better for me.
Like, so much of the books are about MB learning how to be a person, about becoming okay with being a complete individual with everything it entails. The first thing it does once it's actually allowed to decide on its own is it runs away from it all (admittedly to go on a mission to confirm some things about its past, because it genuinely just wants to be *good*). It shoves all its emotions away as much as it's able to. Then shit happens, and it makes its first friends, makes decisions based on these friendships, goes through a lot of emotionally intense situations...
And we get to this point here. MB having zero doubts about going with ART says a lot about its relationship with ART, but it also says a lot about its relationship with its humans - it knows that wherever it goes, when it comes back, the humans will still be there. Its humans actively acknowledge its struggles with being a now-free SecUnit and MB is willing to entertain the discussions to an extent and share information about its deeply personal experiences. Hell, System Collapse ends with MB admitting it might be somewhat broken, but that's okay as long as it can keep doing its job, and agreeing to basically do counselling - this is the guy what would rewatch its favourite TV show again and again in order to avoid acknowledging it even had Emotions a couple books back.
Reading this, I know that MB will be okay. It has hopes and goals and genuinely believes in itself and it has an amazing support system that its willing to lean on for the first time in its life. I'm convinced it'll go on to do great things with ART. And that's really the only thing I need to know.
