why i can't wear ballet flats.
If you had told my 15-year-old self that ballet flats would return in the early 2020s, I don’t think I would have believed you. I adored the Valentino Tango pumps and had tried styling ballet flats with my school uniform on multiple occasions throughout my secondary school career (ah, the 2010s), unfortunately to no avail. In my mind, the ballet flat was too ill-fitting for me , and was an item that only my mum (or maybe Alexa Chung) could wear and actually look good in.
Skip to 2022, and as a shock twist (although is it really a shock?) the ballet flat is back. Or should I say the ballet pump? The 2022 revival of this classic item expands to formats outside of the flat slip-on that we’re all familiar with – heels, tabis, flatforms, and even sporty styles have hit the market and have skyrocketed the shoe back to its former status.
A very valid argument could be made that the ballet flat never really went out of style, that the ballet flat is simply a classic item that’s wearable regardless of the current it-style. I’m inclined to agree, but we can all see that the trend cycle was not particularly kind to this shoe over the past 5 years.
So why is the ballet shoe back? To no one’s surprise, TikTok currently dominates the trend cycle. Catalysed by the F/W 2022 Miu Miu collection, as well as other brands such as Simone Rocha and Molly Goddard, an updated version of hyperfeminine clothing aesthetics are at the forefront of the modern trend cycle.
I can’t say that I don’t love this trend. Personally, I’m a big fan of rounded toe shoes as opposed to the square and pointy styles that have been popular in recent years. Moreover, I believe that this reincarnation of the ballet shoe brings variations to the shoe that, at least in my mind, were sorely needed. As I mentioned briefly earlier in this post, I grew up seeing my mum reach for a classic ballet shoe (mostly in a patent black, or a funky leopard print) for easy casualwear, and whilst I also tried wearing this style myself, it never really stuck.
The return of the ballet shoe begged me to think – why did this not work for me?
The classic ballet flats, in my opinion, hold two major issues:
The silhouette that the ballet flat creates, whilst simple, can often feel unbalanced.
They’re deeply uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time.
I am a flatform shoe enjoyer, and so the minimal silhouette of the ballet shoe brings an unsettling lack of balance when used in tandem with the rest of my clothing. For some, the original silhouette works harmoniously with the rest of their look – think the ‘French Girl’ style, for example. For those of us with a clumsier disposition, or need more support in a shoe, the ballet flat may also seem impractical to wear on a daily basis. Thus, a classic ballet shoe just does not fit with the rest of my wardrobe or my lifestyle, and there is no purpose in investing in a trend that simply does not suit.
I don't think these feeling is uncommon. The resurfacing of the ballet shoe has not been without its scepticism.
Having said all of this, I still, like many others, enjoy the aesthetics and vibe of the ballet shoe, and this design revival brings the perfect opportunity to finish what my younger self started. As much as the styles put out by Miu Miu and Simone Rocha are something out of a dream, I’m a university student and at ~£600+ there’s simply no room in my life for that price point right now unless anyone wants to sponsor me ;) . I’ve tried similar silhouettes through the ‘A Warrior’s Heart’ style by KOI footwear, but found that the material simply did not withstand my constant lack of physical coordination and scuffed far too quickly.
Even amongst the heeled variety, Nodaleto and Carel’s mary janes still sit outside of my price bracket. It felt as if this revival, despite all its improvements and positives, still remained inaccessible to me. The lower price point provided styles that would not work aesthetically or practically in the long-term, and the higher price point would not work financially. Even second-hand sales proved too expensive. For a while, it felt as if I would have to sit this one out, despite evaluating that the right shoe would be able to remain in my closet rotation beyond its trend time.
Now, I want to make it clear that I will not be providing a list of potential buys. It’s important to me that I’m avoiding the endorsement of unnecessary purchase, and so instead of showing my ‘buy list’, I’ll be walking you through the process I undertook to complete my mission. As a 19-year-old in the process of transitioning from the wardrobe of my 'teenage self' to my 'young adult self', it’s important to me that I buy items that will fit in my wardrobe long term as opposed to trend items. For this very same reason, I’ll be avoiding fast fashion shops when selecting a shoe, as my aim is to find something more timeless that will last longer (plus, it’s better for the environment). I don’t buy shoes very often, so I’m more focused on investing in pieces that will last longer as much as I am able to afford to do so.
As the overcomplicater I am, I decided to formulate a 3 stage plan to find the perfect addition to my shoe collection.
the plan:
Step 1 – Trial
I’ve mentioned my mum prior in this article and how growing up I saw her wear ballet flats often. My first port of call was to message her and see if she has a pair she no longer uses. I wanted to affirm that the traditional version of the style was not right for me, and as opposed to buying it, it would be much better to borrow and try it out first.
I was in luck. (it’s a good thing we’re the same size)
Step 2 – Analysis
At the end of my trial, I decided to take a step back and analyse what aspects of the shoe worked, and what didn’t. I compared the flats I borrowed, to any shoes I previously owned that share similar characteristics, as well as my ideal styles to identify what I liked and what I didn’t. From there, I could formulate exactly what I’m looking for.
Step 3 – The Hunt.
Now, in all honesty, this step is what I want to focus on the least. I could give a list of my ‘top 50 ballet shoe variants’, but that’s contrary to what I actually want to do with this post. My intent here is not to provide product placement or outright promote overconsumption, but rather to offer commiseration and problem-solving to those of you who may be in the same boat as I am. To those of you who aren’t, I hope this provided a little entertainment at least.
For anyone who does want to know about the shoes I ended up choosing – I spent a lot of time scrolling through WConcept and eventually found a cute pair that fit the criteria (and my budget) well. I’ll be putting aside some money from Christmas and my next payday so that hopefully I’ll be able to buy in time for the new year.
If anyone wants an update once I've got them - let me know!
resolution:
As of the moment, I haven't managed to order the shoes. I'm pretty broke, so for now they'll stay at the top of my bookmarks list for another time. It's not entirely a negative thing though.
It's pretty cold in the UK right now, so I'm mostly sticking to warmer boots that I can layer thick socks under to keep warm - it's not like these shoes are going to help keep me warm. Waiting thus means that I'll get a cute new shoe just in time for the spring which, in my opinion, is perfect timing considering the style and aesthetic of the shoes anyway.
All in all, I'm not too bothered by waiting. It's not exactly as if I have a choice, and this process was an exercise in informed buying as much as it was a chance to find the perfect shoes.
In that case, this was a job well done.

The Incredible Durability of Carhartt Apparel
When Hamilton Carhartt founded his workwear company in 1889, his goal was simple - create extremely durable clothing that could withstand the toughest jobs and working conditions. Over 130 years later, Carhartt has not only lived up to that promise but has set an unparalleled standard for ruggedness; evident in every single Carhartt wholesale offering.
Built To Last
Thousands of people love the brand for its durability, so much so that they believe some Carhartt garments can be passed down to the next generation in pristine condition, with enough care.
The key to this legendary durability lies in their meticulous construction techniques and premium materials. Take their signature duck cotton canvas fabric for example. This tightly woven, firm cotton twill is practically indestructible. It resists rips, tears, abrasions, and even fire, offering unmatched protection for workers in demanding industries like construction, manufacturing, and farming.
Even the seemingly normal wholesale Carhartt hoodies boast this durability. The toughness of the Carhartt’s garments goes well beyond just the fabric. The brand prioritizes reinforcing every potential stress point and failure area on its garments. Triple-stitched seams, riveted stress points, double-layered knees and elbows, and thick hardware ensure these clothes can endure years of intense use and abuse without falling apart.
Stringent Quality Control
The pride in craftsmanship is evident in Carhartt's manufacturing facilities as well. Genuine quality control is enforced, with numerous inspection points along the production line. Skilled sewers and workers carefully assemble each garment, ensuring perfection in every stitch. You won't find any hurried, sloppy piecework here.
Their casualwear like hoodies, flannel shirts, and jeans are built like tanks with uncompromised quality, compared to much of what's available in department stores. This commitment to premium construction has earned Carhartt immense loyalty from everyone - from oil riggers to streetwear aficionados.
The People Have Been Speaking
Just look at any veteran contractor, farmer or tradesman's well-worn Carhartt apparel. Faded from years in the sun, patched from heavy use, stained with the marks of a hectic day's work - yet still going strong with no signs of quitting. Each frayed edge and scuffed fabric panel are testaments to how the garments can withstand abuse.
So if you are looking into Carhartt blank apparel, you can count on Carhartt's workmanship and quality. Their apparel is quite simply designed to work as hard as you do, no matter what you throw at it. Explore the wholesale Carhartt apparel catalog in ShirtsBargain to get the finest from the brand at incredible value and volume discounts, along with optional, professional-grade decoration services.

How To Style An 18k Gold Iced Out Cross Pendant 316L Stainless Steel Cuban Bracelet For A Dazzling Look?
Over time, men's jewelry styles have expanded to cater to various tastes and preferences. Iced-out cross pendants, Gold and enamel crucifix sets, and Cuban link bracelets rank among the most fashionable and popular choices. This article details these pieces, covering materials, features, and styling advice.
Iced Out Crosses and Cuban Link Chains
Iced-out cross pendants have surged in popularity recently, fusing meaningful symbolism with eye-catching sparkle. These pendants typically showcase a cross motif covered in quality cubic zirconia stones. The numerous stones lend an icy, brilliant effect that inspires the name “iced out.”
When selecting materials, 18k Gold makes an excellent base for iced-out pieces. This gold alloy contains 75% pure gold, providing a rich, warm tone and impressive durability. However, 18k gold iced out cross pendant 316l stainless steel Cuban delivers an affordable and practical alternative. The high-grade steel strongly resists corrosion, scratches, and tarnishing, making it suitable for daily wear.
Tumblr media
Many men choose a Cuban link chain to complement an iced-out cross. The distinctive interconnected oval links give these chains a bold, substantial aesthetic. A steel cross pendant with a matching 316L steel Cuban creates a cohesive, stylish look. Steel withstands daily wear without losing luster, so the chain and pendant remain resilient and eye-catching.
14k Gold and Black Enamel Crucifix Sets
For a more elegant and traditional style, 14k gold and black enamel crucifix sets make timeless selections. Typically, these sets include a crucifix pendant and coordinating chain, normally crafted from rich 14k yellow Gold and black enamel crucifix set. With 14k Gold containing roughly 58% pure gold, it strikes an optimal balance of value and durability for regular use.
The inlaid black enamel contrasts elegantly with the warm golden tone, accentuating the crucifix shape with a deeper dimension. Some intricate designs incorporate tiny diamonds or gemstones, heightening the sense of refinement with a hint of sparkle.
Consider the occasion and your personal taste when sporting one of these sets. A set’s versatility enables both casual everyday wear and formal styling. For professional or dressier situations, a crucifix set may fare better than an iced-out pendant, while stacking the crucifix with other delicate chains dresses it down for relaxed events.
Cuban Link Bracelets
On wrists, Cuban link bracelets have become a masculine essential, flaunting characteristic oval links in a striking chained pattern. The standard link design can be rendered at varying widths, suiting individual wrist sizes and personal preferences.
The spectrum spans Gold, silver, and stainless-steel options for materials. Fourteen and 18k gold Cuban link bracelets radiate luxury and status, although at steeper price points. More affordable silver and steel alternatives retain stylish good looks without heavy investment.
A key virtue of the mens Cuban link bracelet is its adaptability. The simple yet eye-catching piece projects minimalist appeal and stacks attractively with diverse companions. It also readily transitions from casualwear to formal attire, holding wide appeal across occasions. The Cuban link bracelet is an excellent addition to men’s jewelry rotations for versatility and wearability.
Caring for Men’s Jewelry
To preserve the beauty and integrity of men’s jewelry, mindful care and handling are vital. Below are essential tips for maximizing the lifespan of your favorite pieces:
Store items with care. Keep pieces in separate soft pouches or lined boxes to avoid scratches and tangles.
Remove jewelry before physical activities—take jewelry off for sports, swimming, cleaning, etc., to protect it from damage or discoloration.
Professionally inspect every 6-12 months. Have clasps tightened, stones reset, and extensive polishing done periodically by a jeweler.
How can I style a gold and enamel crucifix set for a striking appearance?
A gold and enamel crucifix set makes a striking style statement when worn alone as the central focus or layered with other gold necklaces. You can also coordinate the crucifix with gold bracelets or rings. Wear the set with darker palettes and minimal accessories to make the crucifix stand out.
What wrist size should I consider when shopping for a Cuban link bracelet?
When shopping for a Cuban link bracelet, consider a wrist size about 0.5 to 1 inch larger than your actual wrist measurement to achieve a comfortable fit with slight movement. If the bracelet has an adjustable clasp, use your exact wrist size. Check if the bracelet length is fixed when ordering online.
What is the best way to prevent gold jewelry from tarnishing?
To prevent the jewelry from turning color, keep it in a dry and cool place without heat or sunlight while not wearing it. Be aware that perfumes, oils, moisturizers, and cleaning chemicals may harm Gold. That is why you must avoid exposing your jewelry to such products. Frequently wiping down your gold jewelry using a clean material will help prevent oils and dirt from accumulating, which can then trigger the discoloration of the jewelry.
What must I avoid when I have an iced-out cross pendant on?
Remember that you should not take your diamond necklace along while taking a bath or soap. Soaps and moisture can stick to the metal and gems, making them look soiled over time. Make sure to do steps and tasks that are (impact the consequences) of the pendant's exposure to harsh chemicals, which products such as perfume tend to make the tarnishing process rapid.
How will I be choosing the right bracelet size? For sure, the easiest way to determine what bracelet size is the best for you is to measure the circumference of your wrist using a soft measuring tape. Add approximately an inch for the bracelet size selection to your measurement for the most comfortable and slightly moveable wear that supports your finger.

Consumer desire for a multifunctional wardrobe drives athleisure trend
From cycling shorts and heels to mentors and floaty midi dresses, over the most recent two years, the athleisure pattern has ascended to an unheard of level. Because of the Kardashians and other high profile powerhouses, the interest for solace, execution and style has driven the need of having a multifunctional closet.
Sustainability will push the future of the athleisure pattern
The worldwide athleisure market is anticipated to rise 9.0% in 2019. This has been driven by sports clothing brands selling buyers a way of life and design retailers utilizing their style qualifications to deliver reasonable wellness reaches to sell close by center relaxed and formalwear assortments. While development in the market is easing back, as the pattern develops in the west where less purchasers are passed on to change over into 'athleisurites' and volume learning experiences ease as customers question the need to add to their thorough legging and coach assortments, it is as yet beating the complete dress and footwear market and will keep on doing as such past our conjecture period to 2023.
For more Athleisure Market insights on this report, download a free report sample
While style and powerhouses have driven the outcome of the athleisure market, the sustainability development will keep on supporting the craving for a multifunctional closet. Shoppers are buying all the more consciously and lessening spend on quick design, giving way to the schemes of those retailers and brands that can feature the adaptability of their things - as well as the strength and quality. Additionally, expanding customer hunger for solace has likewise fuelled deals of sports clothing and mentors with brands using their specialized ability in guaranteeing items offer opportunity of development, help temperature, and sweat control, shape the body and offer help. These characteristics have separated into customers' regular wear - not just when they are at the rec center.
Reception of athleisure pattern a lot more slow in the East
Reception of the athleisure pattern in quite a bit of Asia has been more slow, so global and public brands are utilizing virtual entertainment, outsider selling stages, and brand representatives to sell the allure of having a games and road impacted closet. Chinese brand Li-Ning has taken advantage of its certifications as a games maker to create high design casualwear which can be worn for preparing or recreation, while Nike's instore and online outfit styling gives motivation on the most proficient method to wear pieces for various uses - empowering shoppers in China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan to integrate athletic apparel into their regular closets.
In the UK 20% of customers bought activewear explicitly for relaxation exercises and leisure time, not to practice in, while of those purchasers that purchased activewear explicitly for work out, 68% wear such things for different exercises, for example, eating out or shopping. This readiness to coordinate active apparel with center closet pieces has opened active apparel brands up to new crowds and permitted them to expand into new item regions, helping their portion of the worldwide attire and footwear market.

Thresholds, Online Exhibition Review
@ MIMA, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art
At the start of the year we were fresh-faced, coming into a new decade our planners were full and the air was ripe with potential. Then we entered the period of uneasiness, stuck at home not knowing what was going to happen next, our plans stifled; the places we once went for enjoyment and culture were shut and at risk of closing for good. In this period of uncertainty, we connected to the outside world via our screens, seeing family and friends in unfocused zoom calls and trying to figure out the best impromptu office space to work from home in. We spent more time in our domestic spaces, saw into the domestic worlds of our peers, lines were crossed as our domestic spaces became where we entertained friends, where we worked and where we also relaxed on top of everything. Our relationships with our homes we re-written as we adapted to our new way of living through a pandemic.
Tumblr media
Throughout lockdown, art spaces jumped to create online exhibitions right away and created a plethora of virtual exhibits some newly made others pre-planned exhibits put into a computer manufactured gallery space or a video tour like Tate Modern’s Andy Warhol exhibit. Comparatively, Thresholds curator Adian Moesby, who is currently working as MIMA’s associate curator during his residency, took time to reflect on the changes made to our relationship with home during lockdown and the easing of restrictions which is where this current virtual exhibition is born out of. Moesbys practice is ‘under pinned through conversation’ (Adian Moesby – About, 2020) which he utilises in the curation of this exhibit through in-depth conversations he had with Sonia Boué, Lindsey Duncanson and Catriona Gallagher, the three artists that make up Thresholds. The exhibit connects these artists together through a mix of photography and film to communicate their personal stories and experiences with lockdown and the impact Covid-19 had on their relationship to home. Made at a time of easing restrictions Thresholds asks us to evaluate our feelings and connections towards our homes and the places we inhabit at a time where restrictions are tightening up once again and we will inevitably be spending more time there.
Clicking through to the exhibit PDF you are confronted with a low-res still from Catriona Gallagher's ‘Video Villanelle (for distance)’ (2020), a twilight sky setting up the transient mood that prevails throughout the exhibit. Scrolling down you are introduced to Sonias Boué’s ‘Safe as Houses’ (2020) 12 photos documenting her move to her new studio space which she moved into during the transitional period of lockdown. Set against a white backdrop each new photo exists on its own page and explores a plethora of objects which Boué takes with her for each new move; from childhood items such as a rocking horse to an exhaust pipe situated on its own rickety looking chair, these hold a personal connection to the artist. ‘Safe as Houses’ shares a close relationship to much of Boué’s practice where she ‘explores home and the domestic as metaphors for exile and displacement’ (Sonia Boue, 2020) with much of her work focusing on post-memory the idea of connection to the past and the generational trauma that continues to affect the lives of future generations seen most clearly in her work responding to the Spanish Civil war. Boué presents this within Thresholds in the specifically tailored striped pyjamas featured in a quarter of the photographs that connect not only to the new casualwear of lockdown but is reminiscent of the clothes her grandparents were forced to wear during their time in concentration camps. In one they sit folded on a wooden chair set to the right of the frame; the room dim with a square of light reflected in from a window in the empty space. Boués photos mark the space of time from childhood to adulthood and the period of moving. The photographs and the diverse objects we see serve as an exploration into what home means to us, the things we carry through with us through childhood into our adult lives and how we make a space a home.
Tumblr media
Sonia Boué, 'Safe as Houses', 2020.
Where Sonia Boué travels through memories and explores the past, Lindsey Duncansons piece ‘Brief loss’ (2020) studies the repetitive stagnation of life during lockdown. The three greyscale film vignettes feature next to each through a triptych; filmed within Duncanson's own flat it reveals a very personal side to the artist and invites us into her own domestic space that she shares with her family. The film is notably different from the rest of Duncanson's work which usually feature sublime picturesque outdoor scenes with plenty of colour whereas in this piece she has swapped out the rolling hills of the moors of Stanhope for the cosy interiors of home. This reversal exemplifies the loss, change and confinement that lockdown brought, Duncanson can no longer explore the landscapes around Newcastle upon Tyne and so she has adapted to her new situation and uses her home as a landscape to explore instead. Titled ‘Brief Loss’ the piece carries with the emotional effects of lockdown and displays the monotonous nature of life that occurred when we could no longer go out to experience life outside our homes. Within the scene Duncanson sits crouched in the centre of the triptych, walled in by a row of plants and a bookcase she’s seemingly lost in thought, occasionally picking a book out and flipping through it before resuming her previous position, there is a quiet comforting presence to the piece, on either side of Duncanson her partner, in the left-hand panel, and son, in the right, sit in their own respective rooms, her partner rests comfortably on an armchair occasionally living his mug while her son sits at his desk drawing while a screen flickers out of signal next to him. The whole scene has a dreamlike quality to it with the comfortable atmosphere alongside the ambient sound and the black and white filter and in each doorway behind the subjects exists projections of the outside, with pond skaters skipping over water, the ripples and reflections of clouds, and star-like moving foam. Duncanson combines the domestic with the outside showing our dreams of being free once again and escape this monotony that we’ve fallen into.
The final piece of Thresholds isn’t confined to the comforts of home or one space instead it travels through memories, moments and landscapes. Home isn’t one pace for most of us but for Catriona Gallagher she works and lives between Northumberland and Athens ana through ‘Video Villanelle (for distance)’ (2020) she ‘explores her sense of dislocation’ (MIMA-Thresholds-Exhibition.pdf, 2020) from being stuck in England while trying to navigate the travel restrictions throughout summer to return to Greece. The aptly named 17-minute film follows the a, b rhyme structure -like that of a traditional villanelle poem- comprised of short snippets of footage with repeating motifs not too different from the structure of a stanza. The footage feels as though you are being invited into Gallagher's life, it’s a documentation of scenes with friends, with so warm sparkling candles on a birthday cake and to late-night bicycle rides, to rain pouring outside of a window and Gallagher's reflection in the window of a train the landscape rushing by while you hear mindless chatter in the background. Sound plays an interesting role in this film with most of it coming from the footage though you can hear music from Magic Arm ebbing and flowing through that perfectly ties the clips together. There is a sense of reminiscing over what life used to be with clips featuring a close-knit group of people and scene of the Greece coastline this is starkly contrasted to the reality of uncertainty as to when life will return to normal. The film is set in portrait mode with a somewhat low-quality feel to it due to the footage being taken entirely from existing videos from Gallagher's phone archive. It comprises of videos sent to friends or keepsakes as Jade French puts it ‘this footage was never intended to be art’ (French, 2020) which give it an intensely personal feel as if we are walking through her memories. ‘Video Villanelle’ focuses on the small moments, the subtle experiences in life and though the footage is fragmented it still carries the same focus on overlooked details in our physical spaces and ambient wistful nature that Gallagher's work holds. Gallagher uses this piece to reflect on their experience of lockdown and looks at how our phones connect while improvising with the limited tools she had available as she did with ‘They met under the ceiling of sky’ (2020) which then went on to the official selection in the Laterale Film Festival in 2020.
Tumblr media
Catriona Gallagher, Stills from ‘Video Villanelle (for distance)’, 2020
Over the summer we have been overrun with the many virtual exhibits and Thresholds taking place after utilises the online space to its best potential. Having been commissioned to be a virtual exhibition it uses photography and film which are familiar to the online space rather than creating pieces tailored to a physical space. Through working online there’s a variety of different experimental formats to use over a simple pdf format however this way it encourages a non-art audience to take part through being simple, it becomes relatable for a wider range of people which Moseby advocates for having curated public events to specifically engage those audiences.
Thresholds subliminally speaks on the visibility of the disabled community in the art world. Curator Aidan Moseby closely works within the disability and diversity sector having been commissioned by and worked for companies such as Disability Arts Online and DASH which this exhibition is partnered with. The setup and extra care with subtitled and audio described versions for each film make this exhibition more accessible the usual cases. Where other galleries are immediately setting up shop in their physical spaces' as lockdown eased Thresholds doesn’t, it makes a statement that we can’t forget that the move to virtual during lockdown made art spaces more accessible to the disabled community. Art spaces have long been exclusive and inaccessible but with the lockdown when non-disabled people no longer had the means to visit gallery spaces that suddenly changed. It showed that galleries had little excuse for doing this before with the ease and speed in which they transferred their exhibitions online. Even having a virtual floor plan makes it more accessible as they ‘act as a helpful tool to plan trips and relieve anxiety for disabled art audiences’ (Kroese, 2020) referencing 3d art space floor plans.’. Thresholds subliminally makes a statement through being set after many galleries have shut their online exhibits and have opened their doors again through quietly having accessible versions of artworks. There is much change that needs to happen in the art world in making it more accessible to a wider range of people and lockdown has presented these options that we can and should learn from to aid us in the future.
Tumblr media
Thresholds invades your domestic space as you visit it through the comforts of your own home through the ambient sound of Gallagher's work and personal memorabilia of Boués photographs. It looks at how the pandemic has changed our relationship to our domestic spaces, how confined we've become and how the virtual space can connect us. As lockdown has pushed and eased our homes have become multi-functional places, we continue to reflect on the change our lives have gone through and think about our connection to the people we surround ourselves with. Though through this we need to see the visibility of disabled people in the arts and how the small start that was ignited during lockdown needs to continue to help keep places accessible to the many rather than the few.
Thresholds can be found here.

ELEGY
by Alexander Freeling
When walking to work recently I passed three tourists taking photos. Hardly surprising in a town that’s full of visitors for three quarters of the year, but I felt a quiet sense of recognition. The abundance of zip-through layers. Sportswear of the kind that’s useless for any possible sport. Camo pants cut better than most suits. These were Italians.
Perhaps it was the vindication of all these hours spent reading about clothes: I could have been learning languages, but I’d still acquired some cultural literacy. Perhaps it was only the satisfaction of guessing something correctly. But I think the real reason I was privately pleased was that this brief episode seemed to prove something I’d been hoping for a long time might be true: that the sense of recognition you get when you hear a song from a long teenage summer, or when the smell of a perfume that throws you instantly into an embrace you’ve not felt for a decade, can also come not from the distant past or some deep place within, but from new fascinations and pursuits. That the things we find ourselves getting way too interested in (even if it’s gin or Italian casualwear) might be a way of making a home for ourselves.
Of course, you can also have nostalgia in the present. I know that Italy isn’t all sun-drenched villages where men called Brunello personally tend to goats as their close family members and make exquisite sweaters. There’s more than enough bleached jeans and under-sized, over-branded t-shirts to fill all their malls and ours, and like everywhere there are mundane problems and casual indifference to them, and astonishing cynicism that goes right to the top. But it’s one of those luxuries of being from elsewhere that you get to enjoy the good in a place with that half-innocence of a stranger.
That’s not the direction Britain has been lurching recently. There are genuine debates to be had about governance and equity, but then there always were. What’s changed is that complex questions are ever more quickly being resolved into a pointless debate between local and global, and we’ve been talked into accepting a poorer definition of both. As if what’s right around us isn’t also connected in a thousand ways to people and places all over the world, and as if the capacity to make serious, happy connections can’t be possible anywhere we decide to call home.
There’s an argument that those of us who feel gloomy about the increasing sense of isolation never really had the things we’re now lamenting. And perhaps all mourning, like all thinking, is about the idea of the thing and not the thing itself. But there are concrete things. The tailoring store down my street is closing. I never really understood how it survived in the first place, a slightly cramped, profoundly British store selling four-figure Italian suits in a town comprised mostly of students, tourists, and the odd professor whose tastes—if they amount to anything more than pure practicality—veers towards Norfolk jackets and cords rather than soft shoulders and wool/silk/linen blends. But its presence seemed testament to the idea that we could have both.
All the painfully loud jackets, crunchy knit ties, and luxury socks, as soft as water, with their tell-tale ribbon on the toe, are priced for a quick sale. It will feel good for a week or two picking up old stock at knock-down prices, perhaps stretching to the odd bit of utterly unnecessary outerwear. But in the long run, importing such things will only get more difficult, and more specialist retailers will suffer. This shop will probably become another VC-cash-injected mid-range jeweller. And one more inkling of Europe, however imaginary, will be gone.

"Cheers!" All five members of Poppin' Party, plus Seth and Marina, clink their plastic glasses together in celebration of another successful live show. Kasumi, ecstatic as always, gets half a smile from Arisa, who pleads for Saya to help her. O-Tae and Rimi make small-talk about how they can synchronize their instruments more, while Marina and Seth make idle talk while Seth packs up. "Where are you going, Seth? I thought you liked to stay behind for a little bit." "Prior reservation, Marina." Seth zips his signature green backpack up and hoists it onto a shoulder. "I normally would, but this is really important." "Like, bad important?" "Nah. Just important." Marina raises an eyebrow. It's rare that Seth leaves early, but when he does, it's critical business. "What'cha doing, then? If you don't mind me asking." "Baking cookies." "With who?" "That's classified information." "Just tell me who." "No." "Why not?" "You're going to bully me about it." "I am not! Just tell me who it is." "Lisa." Marina laughs. "Lisa? I knew you liked her- I just didn't expect you two to be going on a date this early." "Shut the fuck up, Marina. I hate you." Seth takes a sip of his drink- Brisk raspberry tea- to cover the fact that he's clearly very flustered. "What's wrong with liking Lisa? You two would be cute together!" "Yukina and Sayo would probably kill her, Ako's a wild card, and Rinko... Rinko's fine. But the first two of them would get mad." "Why?" "They'd be all like, oh, 'Lisa, you're no longer totally dedicated to Roselia, either dump him or dump the band.' And I don't wanna be the reason she has to give up Roselia." "There's no guarantee they'd be mad, Seth. I mean, those reactions are a little in-character, but- it's best to be honest, you know?" "I do know." Seth opts to look at his drink instead of Marina. "I just don't wanna be honest." "Seth..." The person in question picks his head up. "Aren't you and Lisa already great friends? Her face lights up when she sees you! I can tell she's interested in what you like- I mean, she asked for another one of your Letterbomb shirt, right? And she always saves a pastry for you after practices. I think she's already a step ahead of you." "I hate when you're right." "Heh. Of course you do. Just ask her out, you big idiot." "No promises." The doorbell of CiRCLE rings, and in walks Lisa herself, dressed in her usual casualwear plus a fluffy beige coat and small messenger bag to serve as her purse. "Hiya, Lisa!" Kasumi says, turning to wave to her. Lisa gives an enthusiastic wave back, complete with her signature smile, before heading on over to where Marina and Seth are milling about." "Hey, you two! How was it?" Lisa asks, bubbly as ever. "Smashing success. Initial sounded fantastic." Seth replies. Marina nods in agreement. "Do you need help with anything, Marina? Just while I'm here, you know." "Nope. You're free to go." Marina nudges Seth in the arm as a sort of "go have fun on your date" message. "Okay! You ready, Seth?" "I've never baked before, but I'm sure I can figure it out." Seth finishes his tea and begins to walk out of CiRCLE with Lisa, throwing away his cup near the door. "Seth!" Marina calls as he's just about to exit. Seth, as well as Lisa, turn around, to see Marina giving an enthusiastic thumbs-up to her sound engineer. Seth replies with a thumbs-down, to which Marina shakes her head. Seth and Lisa turn back around. "What was that?" Lisa asks. "Dunno." Seth shrugs, and the two of them continue walking towards Lisa's place. [bandori 'five minutes later' introduction card] "-So I guess there were some hitches with Kasumi's vocals at the end, but I think that's 'cause I set the gain too high and just forgot to change it. Like- their vocals all go into separate channels, so there's no way I would've, like, turned it up for Rimi's part and forgot to have changed it, but, like, who knows." "I'm glad it went well, though. Didja have fun?" "Oh- yeah, of course. I'm kinda sad you weren't able to be there for Initial. it was fuckin' great." "I know, right? I remember hearing it when you drove me to school the other day. Which, by the way- thank you." "Oh, no problem. And Garret says I drive the Slowbalt..." Seth sighs, remembering how the two of them still arrived to school at eight despite Lisa saying she was running over that morning. Lisa laughs, and the two of them continue walking until Lisa pipes up as they reach her house. "Um, Seth?" Lisa stops walking, and Seth follows suit. "Yeah?" "Can we talk? It's nothing bad, I promise." "Huh? Yeah, sure. What's poppin'?" "Well... Yukina might get mad at me for doing this, but... I really like you. And I was wondering... if you wanted to be my boyfriend?" "Uh- I mean- I, uh- hm." "Sorry." "No, no! I just- I don't want to get you kicked out of Roselia. Because I know they mean a lot to you, and I didn't know how Yukina would react, and... you really care about me that much?" "Of course I do, or else I wouldn't have asked." "I... do want to be your boyfriend, Lisa. I love you." Lisa flashes a bright smile at Seth. "I love you too."
[LISA🎸: Thanks for helping me tonight! Couldn't have done it without you✨
Space Ishtar's Boyfriend: no problem
LISA🎸: You ok?
Space Ishtar's Boyfriend: brainfreaked over being ur bf
LISA🎸: Sorry haha LISA🎸: If it makes you uncomfortable we can work something out

LISA🎸: I don't think so LISA🎸: Do you mean that like 'I can't believe Lisa and I got together' or?
Space Ishtar's Boyfriend: ya
LISA🎸: Aw Seth :( LISA🎸: Don't say stuff like that LISA🎸: I wouldn't have fallen in love with you without lots of good reasons LISA🎸: I can list them even
Space Ishtar's Boyfriend: fire away
LISA🎸: Well you're super smart- you're taking three math classes after all LISA🎸: You know a billion more things about sound engineering than I do and that's saying something LISA🎸: You're super creative and I love seeing your stuff even if you don't like it LISA🎸: (BTW that last part of Letterbomb was really good, I think you did a good job with the fight scene) LISA🎸: And you're funny too, not to mention cute LISA🎸: There's a million things I see in you that you might not see in yourself LISA🎸: But I'm here to remind you of those things!⭐️

“You look like an open autopsy.” with your ocs?
ask meme from here
As he opened his eyes to the bright Coruscanti sunlight, Curio felt like death had come for him. Okay, maybe not that bad, but he still felt like death had come in the middle of the night, beat him to a pulp, plugged his sinuses and brain with cotton, and baked him in an oven for an hour and a half.
In short, he felt like shit. He felt so much like shit that not even the gentle reminder on the sticky note beside his casualwear to come out and get breakfast got him to crack the dopey smile it usually caused. Instead, he sniffled, groaning softly as he got dressed before walking out to greet the charming red twi’lek he had come to call his boyfriend, otherwise known as Renen.
As soon as he stepped into the kitchen, Curio knew he should’ve been smelling whatever delicious food Renen was cooking, but due to the aforementioned clogged sinuses, he could not. It didn’t stop his stomach from revolting at the thought of food, though, causing him to breath steadily through his nose, which (unfortunately) caught the attention of his wonderfully and annoyingly attentive boyfriend.
Renen smiled for a moment, before it was washed away with a look of concern that Curio would’ve given anything to wipe away with a deep, dipping-involved kiss, but even that seemed like a really gross idea to his sickness-addled brain.
“Woah there, my dear,” Renen said softly, placing a single hand on Curio’s chest as the clone attempted to move forward “No offense, but you look like an open autopsy. Are you sure you’ll be alright to get back by yourself?”
“How do you know what an open autopsy looks like?” Curio asked, avoiding the second question. Renen gave a soft laugh, and Curio swore it sounded like bells.
“I don’t, but I imagine its what you look like right now. You still have a week of leave left, correct?”
Curio nodded, and Renen pressed a soft kiss to the clone’s temple, gently guiding him to the spare bedroom in Renen’s apartment.
“Then stay here, I will call your captain, tell him you are in no condition to return to the barracks. I’ll take care of you, my dear. Alright?”
“Yeah,” Curio said softly, absolutely weak for the red hand softly carding through his hair as he laid down on the guest bed “Am I banned from your room until I get better?”
“Oh, you better believe it. I love you, Curio, but if you get me sick, I’m going to kick your ass.”
“Love you too...” Curio muttered, practically purring as Renen’s cold hand pressed against his hot forehead, slowly falling back to sleep in the safety of his boyfriend’s apartment.

FEBRUARY 2019 DIMENSIONS ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULES & REVIEW
Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of February 28 KST:
A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly total).
A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their monthly schedule.
Threads do not have to take place directly during an important date listed on the schedule, but must be related to what the muse is mentioned to be doing in the paragraph explaining their schedule/the company’s schedule for the month and/or their thoughts on the mentioned activities or lack thereof.
These schedules may be updated throughout the month if new information needs to be added.
Overall Company
The drama and possible legal problems brought to Dimensions this month in response to Gal.actic’s comeback aren’t a good sign, but any publicity is good publicity and Dimensions has gotten much worse publicity in the past. There’s currently no intent to cut back on the plans already presented to the investors for the year, so the company will be going forward with a full company Summer Package, including video and picture content which all idols under the company will shoot the first company photo shoot for this month.
Important dates:
February 4-6: Artists free from schedules for Seollal.
February 23: Day one of full company photo shoot at an indoor water park.
February 24: Day two of full company photo shoot at an indoor water park.
Dimensions Soloist 1
After a month that was mostly a break in January, she’sback to work and preparing for her very quickly approaching Seoul concert and the following world tour in late spring. She’s also in the studio to record for some songs, review some demos, and work with producers on a comeback for next month. She’ll be attending a radio show guesting with the company’s other soloist as well.
Important dates:
February 18: Guesting on Kiss The Radio radio show with Dimensions Soloist 2.
Dimensions Soloist 2
His busking last month earned some buzz and even some new fans, so now Dimensions is finalizing the picks for the track list of his next album, and he’ll be spending some time in the studio working on that as well as being in and out of meetings on his anticipated first solo concert in a few months. He’ll be attending a radio show guesting with the company’s other soloist as well.
Important dates:
February 18: Guesting on Kiss The Radio radio show with Dimensions Soloist 1.
Gal.actic
The comeback seems to be going incredibly well as the month starts, and the single even rises to Gal.actic’s highest weekly digital peak ever in its second week of release thanks to the right promotion on Dimensions’ part for once, but legal action from a men’s group in the second week of the month will bring the momentum to a halt (keep an eye out on the Exclusive blog for more details!) and brings about Dimensions removing them from a planned army performance and a few other small schedules to avoid further backlash, though they’ll go forward with all music show promotions through March 1.
Important dates:
February 1: Filming for Idol Room episode (airing February 12) + episode teaser VLive livestream following filming.
February 2: Filming for After School Club episode (airing February 19.)
February 3: Guesting on Arirang Radio Sound K radio show.
February 8: Fansign in Gangnam, Seoul.
February 10: Filming of Valentine’s Day vlog style video for Youtube preparing gifts for fans.
February 16: Fansign in Incheon.
Alien
Their comeback is next month, and Alien will film their music video in the first half of the month. To add to their planned Western push with this comeback, they’ll be back in the studio at the end of the month at Dimensions’ order to record a fully English version of the title track that will be released after their album. Ahead of their comeback, Alien has also been chosen as new brand models for TONYMOLY’s lip tints and will be filming a CF and doing a promotional photo shoot, both of which will release on Valentine’s Day. They’ll show a different side of the members that isn’t usually shown through their music and promotions. Each member is assigned a shade of lip tint as follows:
Leader/main rapper: "Red Hot”
Vocal/rapper: “Pink Coaster”
Main vocal: “Oh My Rose”
Lead vocal: "Chili Pepper”
Main dancer/lead vocal: "Spicy Ruby”
Maknae/lead rapper/lead dancer: "Baby Coral”
Important dates:
February 2: Tony Moly Lip Tint CF filming.
February 14: MV filming day one.
February 15: MV filming day two.
MARS
“Cactus” promotions wrap on the first day of the month. Promotions were mildly successful, although there was some brewing backlash online about the styling for the era, which is yet to be determined as a negative or a positive for the new stylists on MARS’ team. Most of this month has been set aside to prepare for their fanmeeting (filming VCRs, rehearsing, etc.) that will be at the beginning of March and two yet to be announced global fanmeeting dates that will be testing the waters for a world tour later in the year. The group will be doing a scheduled series of group and solo VLives this month where they’ll drop different small teasers for their upcoming fanmeeting, interact with fans, and play some group games during the two group VLives. All of the VLives will be supervised by managers. They’ll also be dropping by the dance studio of the choreographers for “Cactus” to help teach a class the choreography. The two main dancers will be assigned to take the lead with the choreographers, but the other members will lend a hand as well. A special dance practice video (dressed in casualwear instead of the infamous hot pants) will be filmed at the studio afterwards to be uploaded online.
Important dates:
February 1: End of “Cactus” promotions.
February 2: Group VLive.
February 7: [Leader, main dancer, lead vocal] VLive.
February 11: [Main vocal 1] VLive.
February 14: [Main vocal 2] VLive.
February 15: Special guests teachers at dance studio.
February 18: [Main rapper, lead dancer] VLive.
February 21: [Lead rapper, vocal] VLive.
February 25: [Maknae, main dancer, vocal] VLive.
February 28: Group VLive.
7ROPHY
They’re continuing to film their short weekly reality show for Youtube, but this month will switch the focus to more full group interactions and will give the fans a peak behind the scenes during dance rehearsals and studio time in the final preparations for the comeback next month. Most of the episodes filmed this month will be released after the comeback. 7ROPHY will also be asked, along with Lucid, last minute to fill in for Gal.actic’s cancelled performance for the army. 7ROPHY doesn’t have the strongest male fan base after their concept change, so they might not be the most popular group performing with the given audience, but it’s a good opportunity for publicity.
Important dates:
February 18: Performance in special show for the army alongside BEE, Lipstick, Lucid, Silhouette, and Fuse (performing: Hobgoblin, Black Dress, and Latata + a cover of “Tell Me”)
Unity
A few fan signs dot the end of “Simon Says” promotions, after which things kick into full gear behind the scenes for Unity’s upcoming concerts which will be taking place at Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul during the second to last week of March. They’ll be in heavy rehearsal mode, especially at the end of the month, and will be doing photo shoots for concert promotion pictures.
Important dates:
February 8: Fansign in Incheon.
February 11: Fansign in Busan.
February 15: End of “Simon Says” promotions.
Lucid
In the first few days of the month while they’re in Seoul, Lucid will stop in the recording studio to record a cover of “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction that they’ll film a low-budget music video for while they’re in Paris. During the Europe leg of the tour, they’ll get to perform the solo cover stages they prepared (reminder: must be low production value — no extravagant concepts or stage decorations). They’ll still get Seollal off, but will be spending it in England. 7ROPHY and Lucid will be tapped this month last minute to fill in for Gal.actic’s cancelled performance for the army. The performance will be especially fruitful for Lucid, who will start to trend among male fan communities following videos of the performance being uploaded online.
Important dates:
February 3: “Fly High” tour concert at ULU Live in London, England.
February 7: “Fly High” tour concert at Lao Lisbo ao Vivio in Lisbon, Portugal.
February 8: “Fly High” tour concert at Sala Riviera in Madrid, Spain.
February 10: “Fly High” tour concert at Melkweg in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
February 11: “Fly High” tour concert at Columbia Theater in Berlin, Germany.
February 12: “Fly High” tour concert at Palladium in Warsaw, Poland.
February 14: “Fly High” tour concert at La Trianon in Paris, France.
February 16: Release of “Glass Bead” & Season of Glass mini-album showcase, promotions continue through March 16.
February 18: Performance in special show for the army alongside BEE, Lipstick, 7ROPHY, Silhouette, and Fuse (performing: Glass Bead and White  + covers of “Like Ooh-Ahh” and “Lucky Strike”)
February 20: Fansign in Yeouido, Seoul.
February 26: Fansign in Mapo, Seoul.
