LÉGENDES DU JAZZ
PERCY FRANCE, LE SAXOPHONISTE QUI A FAILLI ÉCLIPSER SONNY ROLLINS
“Percy was one of the tenor players that I had to compete with when I was making my reputation as a young saxophonist. He was probably the best player around at that time; I never could beat him. We were good friends, and I think of him as my brother.”
- Sonny Rollins
Faisant l’éloge de France, Rollins avait dĂ©clarĂ© Ă  son sujet: “Percy was one of the tenor players that I had to compete with when I was making my reputation as a young saxophonist. He was probably the best player around at that time; I never could beat him. We were good friends, and I think of him as my brother.”
He would start off simply... and pick you up and carry you with him with his solos, as a singer would do, just lift you, and you don't know what's happening to you, but you're enjoying it." Commentant le jeu de France sur le standard “The Nearness Of You”, Doggett avait ajoutĂ©:
“To listen to some of those interludes and little things that he played in his solo was just unique. We didn’t have to do much rehearsing at all, because I would just say, ‘Well, I’m going to make the introduction, and after that you pick up the melody line.  Or I would say, ‘Well, I got the middle and you got the last eight.’ I would play the chords.  And he would play the feeling.  And he played some of the most melodic solos that I had ever heard in my life."
France avait toujours vĂ©cu Ă  New York.
DĂ©crivant le jeu de France, le producteur Michael Cuscuna l’avait qualifiĂ© de “one of those big-toned tenor players who blended muscle with vulnerability in his soulful performances.  Like Ike Quebec and Buddy Terry and so many more, his exquisite voice did not extend beyond the New York metropolitan area, but fortunately his work was captured on a number of recordings.” Pour sa part, le critique Sascha Feinstein avait dĂ©crit le jeu de France comme “an irresistible combination of integrity, confidence, swing, and soul.” Quant Ă  Phil Schaap, il avait dĂ©clarĂ©: “Percy France played the way he spoke, which was heartfelt and soulful
He was philosophical in a very warm and human sense.  He wasn’t overly spiritual or religious, but he was very, very soulful and straightforward.  And he could kind of convert you to whatever he was trying to impart to you just by saying it, or by playing it.”  Rendant hommage Ă  son ami, le collaborateur de longue date de France, l’organiste Bill Doggett, avait commentĂ©: “He was a wonderful man, a wonderful friend, and a wonderful musician.”

Quick HitSSS #6 - Slick Susan, Self Reliance, Super 8
Tumblr media
Slick Susan and the Mysterious Soup
Cute! I want more from this world.
I know it’s a ton more work, but I do wish this was colored – the colorwork on the cover is gorgeous. Failing that, some tone or texturework to round out the pages would’ve been nice. There’s exactly one page with value, it’s sick as fuck, and it makes the rest of the story look unfinished by comparison.
Tumblr media
I mean, shit, some of it could have just been black fills. Look at the character design for Mimi, below: her outfit is just black. Why not fill those in as flat inks, so the page at least has some visual contrast? Weird.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think I’m only being so hard on it because the first Slick Susan pages we saw were gorgeous watercolors. I mean, damn, look at that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And even if it wasn’t watercolor, Kirby has done some sick BnW comix too - still love Waves. Lookit that composition!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Self Reliance
Ehh?
Tumblr media
much like the main character of Self Reliance, i was lured into this by a tantalizing limousine Samberg
The premise is interesting, but the movie falls flat. It’s not especially funny; it’s never especially thrilling; I didn’t get especially invested in any of the characters. The main character is somewhat unlikable by design, and outside of his friendship with James / Walter (which is arguably purely transactional) he doesn’t really form meaningful relationships with any other characters. It attempts to alleviate this with a brief pivot into being a romcom, but it doesn’t really work, as Tommy and Maddy only have chemistry in their pillowfight montages and not their actual dialogue scenes. The back half starts to raise some real ambiguity about if the ridiculous game is even real or just a delusion brought on by mental illness, but it ends with a whimper before you can question it too much.
Tumblr media
Ehh.
Super 8
Tumblr media
High school Will was a little Cloverfield freak – like, spent hours daily discussing the lore on the Facebook group level of freak – so you best believe I was stoked for Super 8 when it dropped. J.J. directing, Giacchino back on the score, and another Neville Page creature design? Even if it wasn’t in the same universe, it had to be another banger! Yet all I remember is
a vague sense of being let down. I think I just wanted more monster? Super 8 definitely has its creature feature horror moments, but it’s not quite as all-encompassing as Cloverfield, y’know?
This time, I watched it after craving a more wholesome, character-focused, small town coming-of-age story. Maybe as an adult, I'll appreciate it for what it is rather than be disappointed by what it's not, right?
Tumblr media
Well, not especially. It has its moments, but the emotional throughline didn’t land for me. The kids have great chemistry; I love all the scenes of them filming their movie together, their constant talking shit, Charles’ obsession with ~production value~, that's all great. But the more it focuses on action and mystery, it lost me, and I never felt it quite earned any of its emotional payoffs.
Tumblr media
the absolute audacity of the kids to film a scene in front of an active military operation slayed me
Tumblr media
it’s funny how this shot could be either a defining moment of the movie as the cast watches an alien spacecraft blast off, or just any other random shot because every single one of them has this much lens flare. lmao
