武満さんとマタイ受難曲

　昨日はどんな様子だったのですかと聞くと、NHKの訃報のニュースを見て、斎場に集まった人がみんな怒っていたと、立花さんは言った。

「世界の武満なんだよ。そこをNHKは全然わかってないんだよね」

　ところが、その後、そのNHKの追悼番組の司会をすることになった。訃報が報じられると、世界中の第一線で活躍する指揮者や演奏者から電報や哀悼のメッセージが続々と寄せられていたのだが、立花さんはそれらのメッセージを追悼番組の中で次々紹介した。もしNHKが武満氏を適切に理解していないということがあったのだとしたら、立花さんが番組を進行することによって、それは大幅に是正されたにちがいない。

　武満さんが愛して止まないクラシックの曲がある。作曲を始める時、武満さんはたいてい、その曲を聞いてから始めたそうだ。まるでそれが魂を清める儀式でもあるかのように。その曲とは、ジャン・セバスチャン・バッハの『マタイ受難曲』だ。
