The thing that astounds me about Jack Pearson is that he should not have turned out to be as good of a person as he did. He not only survived a horrible childhood, Vietnam, his estrangement from his brother, a raging case of PTSD, and his own genetic legacy, but he thrived in spite of those things. Married the love of his life, had three beautiful kids who worshipped him, supported his family, and was finally beginning to successfully fight his addiction when he died. He didn't do everything perfectly but he could have been lost to alcoholism or suicide or violence at so many points along the way and he did end up getting almost everything he wanted. I think that's a beautiful legacy and that it especially resonates with people who loved Milo on Gilmore Girls, because Jess could have been lost at so many points along the way and yet he wasn't. He ended up triumphing in the end and becoming a great man, albeit in a very different way.
