Introduction

Kokomi Morozov is the third and final member of the Hakodate division rap battle team, Kuma no ie. She is often called by her MC name, Snegurochka. After fleeing her home country to get away from her overbearing and materialistic father, this Russian snowboarding champion is taking a break from snowboarding professionally. She now simply wishes to use her board for fun as she enjoys this new and wonderful land called Japan.

To say that Kokomi is a work of art would be putting it mildly. Even before she become a famous celebrity, she was already well-known for her beauty. She has pale white skin, which is due to her Russian blood, but also maybe because she has spent the majority of her life in Russia. She has crystal blue eyes that are slanted showing off the Japanese in her. She has lipstick on, giving her ruby-red lips, and a birthmark beneath her right eye. Her most astonishing feature is her long silver hair, which is natural.

For her attire, outside of formal events, Kokomi simply wears the winter gear that she uses when she goes off snowboarding or skiing. She wears a simple black long-sleeved T-shirt with a red and white jacket over it. She wears a pair of matching-colored sweatpants and black snow socks and snow boots. She also has a bear charm on the collar of her jacket. She'll often have a long faded pink and white scarf around her neck, but doesn't wear it when snowboarding. She also wears a pair of blue and gold snow goggles.

Her rap ability, Deep Freeze, allows her to temporarily "freeze" her opponent solid, forcing them to bypass their turn. She can use this move twice per battle, but doing so uses up some of her stamina.

Kokomi's rap themes are centered around her love for the snow, her love for the mountains, and her life as a whole. On serious matters, she'll often rap about how one should be allowed to live life as they choose without the pressures of society or parents bearing down on them. She also talks about how success feels, and that one shouldn't get caught up in one accomplishment, as there are many more to fulfill.

Personality

A cheerful and good-natured young woman from Russia, Kokomi is one who tries to live each day to the fullest, if possible. She enjoys the sights and sounds of her mother's homeland of Japan, citing it as far different from her homeland of Russia. Though she was, at first, nervous about visiting a place that was unknown to her, she has come to really love the city of Hakodate, as well as the people that live there.

When it comes to most things, she tends to be fairly calm and laid-back. When it comes to activities in the snow, such as snowboarding or skiing, she's greatly determined and frequently puts her life at risk, ignoring self-preservation for the act of fun. Though she can be a bit of an air-head at times, when she is interested in something and wants to know more about it, she tries to learn everything about it. This made learning how to snowboard easy as she quickly mastered everything about it in a span of two years at a very young age.

As stated, Kokomi tends to be a bit of an air-head at times. Despite being half-Japanese, she was raised in a Russian household and doesn't fully know how to act. Thus, she tends to accidentally do things that most people would find inappropriate or rude. She also has little to no subtlety or tact, meaning she says things that can be both rude and offensive without meaning to be.

Despite that, Kokomi is a good person who means well. She cares deeply for her friends and wants them to succeed as does she wish for herself to succeed. She is a good friend to Kotan, and tries to remember to be more respectful and courteous with him so as not to insult him or his people. She cares and likes Ted very much, and enjoys spending time with him and his son.

One key aspect of Kokomi is that she dislikes being made out to be something that she knows she is not. When her snowboarding career kicked off, her father, in an effort to get her name out there and increase her publicity, began giving her a number of aliases and nicknames, which caused everyone around her to put her on a pedestal. Eventually, the weight of it all became too much for her and she eventually broke down under the pressure. As such, though she takes pride in her accomplishments, she doesn't like people lording it over her or making her seem to be bigger than she is.

Despite being half Japanese, she doesn't know how to speak it fluently since her dad always forced her to speak Russian.

She is not really coordinated when walking on flat land, preferring to walk on elevated services or the snow.

She always cites that the bears in Japan are quite smaller than the ones in Russia.

She chose her MC name because Snegurochka was her favorite fairytale character as a child. Her mom frequently likened her to Snegurochka because of her appearance.

Though she owns her own house in the city, she rarely lives there, preferring to rent a room in Ted's chalet where she can be closer to the snow and him.

She is acquainted with Katsumi Kenzaki since they both have competed in the Olympics.

He smiles appreciating the truth. Waiting for the additional cappuccino he realises that he had left the phone at work. Seamlessly they switch to english.  Their voices having the accent and dialect of southern england. “I left my other phone at work, I’ll have to get it. The auditors may want to access it...  “ Almost wanting to forget the necessity for the messages to be reviewed. Nothing he says suggests that he is involved in making anything, perhaps its another new currency or a financial solution to existential anxiety, perhaps its bitcoin, perhaps its a drug or to give people temporary prosopagnosia... Further along  a bank of schzioanalysts each in a cubical speaking in hushed tones about how to find love.  Eventually tired of speaking they leave. "Criminals," she says, "Even more criminal than I am these days..." She moves the pink newspaper round and directs your attention to the interview with "Sophia Han, youthful investment supremo of Shanghai..." ...

He went down and walked around the floor, asked the receptionist where she sat.  She directed him towards her glass walled office and then watched him move carefully through the desks. The receptionist  always wondered why she couldn't help like watching him flow across the floor like that. She was sitting in one of the office meeting rooms.  The glass door was shut, he walked into her office in which non-decisions are reversed and decisions are made, where indifference was more important than difference. The low background hum of the office floor  will only be heard if the door is open, otherwise it is silence. He will read a few of the reports he brought with him, printed in colour folders, each colour is supposed to convey a meaning,  but he doesn't know what that is as the semiosis of their imaginaries escapes him.  The hardest thing about being in exile in this country is having to live with their social imaginaries. The nicest thing is sitting in a place, anyplace at all,  with her and or the children,  even if she is involved in a complicated discussion with somebody with agency or not  about whether they should do something to  someone or not... whilst he is reading files, files,  the files and wondering if the contents are accurate. Sometime after this, days or weeks later a car stops outside of an office building.  This same  man gets out and waves goodbye to the person driving the car, enters the building and  asks her; "are you're bored yet ?"  "ÿes sometimes, all the time sometimes" Thinking of both the immediate and the longer term. "anyone left to see?"  He is only thinking of the immediate present. "only Janklevitch,  he wants to talk about a new security contract. .." "Let's have tea instead, and then leave..." She looks at him,  thinking of the magic he has brought into her day. "OK " she says putting on her socks and shoes. Writing [yes] on yet another red file. And [perhaps] on the green one.  The red file is about investing in offshore wind farms with a security aspect included.  The green one about something else,  Scandinavian safe houses in Denmark. Her phone rings on her desk as she pulls on a sock, she ignores it. [...] They go to (goto) the rooftop garden. It is surrounded by glass and metal windbreaks, they drink tea to the sounds of the city,  other people on the rooftop are sitting in groups, pairs or alone talking.  They leave and walk north. "Perhaps I should create more fear in their lives..." She says when talking about the  meetings scheduled for a few weeks in the future. "Only if it makes you happy..."He says taking her hand. "When I lived there before, I thought I belonged, and that I was part of something bigger.  I thought that, in some way, I was responsible. Whereas here there are so few people who need us...""Yes, us, we are we.  A small group of people...." They walked westwards towards the underground station, they were following the route of the underground train that would catch shortly. back towards their home.   "Ï like it here, " She said. Watching the people on the platform at Euston S. The train was empty  when they sat on the bench seat at the front of the train.."People aren't automatically scared, afraid  of you anymore. Which is nice, must be nice" He said quietly to her. "Yes. That’s true though  If i was really invisible we could go for a weekend to Stockholm, a week in the starzengracht..." "A good man is not necessarily law abiding..." Words are falling away into meaninglessness.  perhaps though,  she thinks,  its the proliferation of meanings that matters.

Prince Germafrost is a supporting character in Broken and Frozen. He is the prince of Ice Cream Land, a snowy kingdom not too far away from the Unikingdom, and his voice sounds similar to Radar from Minecraft: Story Mode.

Physical Appearance: Germafrost is a hybrid of a German shepherd and an ice unicorn. He has the same body build as Unikitty and Puppycorn. His horn is a long spike of ice that glows when he's using his ice magic, with smaller ice spikes surrounding it. The majority of his body is light blue. His tail is a darker shade of blue with a dove gray underside, and the tail hair is a little messy. His eyes are the same shade of blue as his tail. He wears a white crown made of light crystals with a sky blue, diamond-shaped gem on it. This same gem, only rounded, is seen on his collar, made of a vanilla ice cream material. There is a black marking on his back. His snout is gray, and his nose is black.

Personality: Throughout the events of the first story of the series, Germafrost is shown to be heartbroken, and clueless about what he is doing. He is calm, relaxed, modest and very, very shy and sensitive. His likes list includes playing soccer, watching it, flowers (crocuses are his favorite), kittens, sheep (especially baby ones) and all things cute. He bursts into tears whenever someone provokes him instead of fighting back, and there is no way to scare him without making him cry.

Germafrost’s sensitivity is a major part of his personality, and he cries a tad bit too much. He is also shown to be gullible. In Broken & Frozen, he lets Master Hazard take him to the Unikingdom and follows directions from him on what to do and where to go, not knowing what his true intentions were. 

Abilities: Germafrost was born with cryokinesis, the power to manipulate ice and snow. This could be because his dog breed is deemed to be naturally cool. He is also able to conjure up any flavor of ice cream that he thinks of. He can make it snow with his emotions as well; how intense the snowfall gets depends on how strong his emotions are.

Earlier designs of Germafrost depicted his horn as looking like Unikitty’s, his crown pointing downwards in the center of his forehead, and the black part of his back being dark blue. 

His name is a portmanteau of “German shepherd” and “permafrost.”

I’m missing a few lines of dialogue here, but this event story describes how someone presented a microscope to Kenshin, and the vassals took a look at snowflake crystals with it. Later in a fair, Hotaru and MC got themselves some snowflake-shaped glass art.

I’m often unsure about whether I should be amused or not over how Japanese writers just constantly handwave “inexplicably modern nonsense” happening in fiction set in medieval Asian settings by “Europeans did it”. It’s not just in otome games like this, but they also often do this in manga set in a universe that resembles Pre-Ming dynasty China. Not even Europeans are that advanced in the relevant time period... 

The microscope that is available circa the late 1500s, made by Dutch glassmakers, just looks like a tube. There’s no “platform” attached to it. The story is describing a modern microscope that you can often see in schools and labs.

Interestingly enough, Chinese scholars somehow can already describe the six-pointed shape of snowflakes even before the Europeans. How they knew or saw them, we do not know. (ETA: sometimes snowflakes are large enough that the six-pointed shapes are clearly visible by naked eye) Han Dynasty scholar Han Ying 韩婴 wrote somewhere in 150-130 BC: “Flowers of plants and trees are generally five-pointed, but those of snow, which are called ying, are always six-pointed." 凡草木花多五出，雪花獨六出，雪花曰霙，雪雲曰同雲 

And, well, even though glass has already been in use even since the BC era as well, I’m not entirely sure the technology has developed so much that they can pull off something so delicate as a snowflake in the 1500s.

There's a lot of love for Juka this time. The images are from a genga (key frame) artist (there doesn't seem to be a source confirming the reading of their name, but it's written "程 玉芬" in Japanese), Shoko Nagasawa and Andgy respectively.

Here's the YouTube video for episode 4's insert song (Enka), Otokogi de Tango. Balletta even makes a pun about it (tango ni suki ni nattango).

Notes from Balletta's Bar F entry (dated 19th April 2021) below. Balletta quotes a lot more than the others do, so expect spoilers for episode 3, down to the quote level!

Balletta starts with greeting everyone in various ways: "皆さんおはようございます！こんにちは！こんばんは！Hello！" - "Everyone, good morning! Good afternoon! Good evening! Hello!"

Balletta then goes on to discuss Uruu's English. He panicked a bit because he can't speak English but he thinks the scene went well.

Balletta becomes envious of Uruu because Uruu is popular at school, despite his attitude of being proper all the time.

Balletta notes Uruu looks like a woman at times when he has his hair up in the bath. (He calls the hairstyle "odango hair".) He calls Uruu "beautiful", but Homura's hair-down style "stylish/cool". "そして蘭丸くん、お風呂の時くらい眼鏡を外しなさい" - "Also, Ranmaru-kun, please take your glasses off while in the bath."

Balletta notes you could see Uruu's butt when he left and thanks whoever was responsible for the "[fan]service shot".

Balletta liked some of the callouts Souji has during his event and wants to use that for an event. He explicitly cites the line 「俺も皆のこと大好きでーす??」 (Ore mo minna no koto daisuki de-su??, CR translation: "I love you guys", because in the context of the episode it's used as a response rather than a question), as well as 「よっ！ワビサビ！」 (Yo, wabisabi!), 「結構なお手前で！」 (Kekkou na otemae de!).

Balletta calls Homura's blushing face "cute". He liked Hori's delivery of the line 「かっこえぇなぁ?」 (CR translation: "Very cool!") and calls Ranmaru and Bakkun playing with marshmallows "a cute pair".

A bit further down the post, Balletta says they achieved the curry quota for episode 3. He notes Homura and Uruu's relationship is full of mysteries and the water and fire clans don't get along - he wonders if this is foreshadowing and whether Takara knows something about this.

Balletta notes Ranmaru has a small goat with him and the school anthem quota is also filled for the episode during the scene between Ranmaru and Uruu. He specifically quotes Uruu's line which is representative of his way of living: 「正しい心を持っていれば、世界はそれに応えてくれる。」 (The CR translation of the line is "When one maintains internal propriety, the world comes to reflect that.") Balletta calls Uruu's way of thinking and even his heart "like a clear and transparent crystal".

"This is 100% foreshadowing!" Balletta declares about the shot reflected in Uruu's eyes.

Balletta says cheering someone on is good but hoarding goods like Iyo does is bad and you should leave some for other people.

Balletta likes Houjou's line: 「お戯れを」. (CR translation: "Your Majesty teases me.") Balletta also became interested in what sort of fairy Houjou was in his youth.

There's also apparently a 「違うか！？」 (Chigauka?!) quota.

Balletta calls the water clan the strongest because they're capable of ice and snow attacks too and he calls Uruu's wings "pretty".

"「オン　マヤルタ　ハリキラ」 夭聖界の言葉ですね。決してカビキラーではありませんよ！笑" - "'On miyalta harikira.' They're words from the fairy world. They're not mould killer (kabi kiraa), LOL." (Kabi kiraa seems to be this mould killer specifically.)

The song from the "On miyalta harikira" scene was also used during Otasuke Heaven (the mini show the voice actors do on the YouTube channel).

Apparently the director says to make the "go to heaven" delivery different each time.

Even Balletta is surprised when the queen says Uruu wanted the punishment. Balletta calls Homura "kind" because he (Homura) cares about his friends.

At the end, Balletta thanks 5 to Heaven, the staff, illustrators, directors, composer etc. He explicitly asks Hishida (the main director of the anime) for a celebration after all the events are over. [He uses a lot of exclamation marks around this part, so you can tell he's passionate about his work even if you can't read the Japanese.]

Tokyo Godfathers (2003)

Part of the reason why we have so many Christmas films is that there are so many facets of the holiday to explore. Gifts and commercialism, family, rebirth, charity, etc. One theme that often gets forgotten is "miracles" but even we had dozens of them every year, Tokyo Godfathers would still stand out. Heartwarming, heartbreaking, hilarious, harrowing, and unconventional, it’s an instant favorite.

After watching a nativity play, three homeless people - alcoholic Gin (voiced by Tooru Emori), drag queen (or perhaps transgender) Hana (Yoshiaki Umegami), and teenage runaway Miyuki (Aya Okamoto) - discover an abandoned newborn among nearby garbage. As they follow clues to find the child’s parents, the group encounters all sorts of strange adventures.

In most films, coincidences are a sign of the writers’ laziness. “How do I get these characters out of a jam? They happen to bump into the right person, at the right time.” There are many coincidences in Tokyo Godfathers but on December 25th, these events mean something different. As the trio walks through the lonely snow-covered streets of Tokyo, they are forced to confront the past that drove them to homelessness through the unlikeliest scenarios. A man they rescue happens to be tied to Gin’s past. This discovery sends the group spiraling in unexpected directions like beams of light through crystals. You never know where things are headed next and each encounter is so wild they should feel out of place but instead feel perfectly at home. There’s something special about this night, this child, this specific group of people on this specific quest. Every chance is a one-in-a-million chance, which makes each discovery epic. All of these interconnected lives are being changed by this one mysterious child.

It's uplifting but Tokyo Godfathers is not light as snow. The harsh truths of homelessness are addressed frankly. While the miracle of a virgin birth permeates every frame, some people we encounter are cruel and still see the destitute as if it were any other day. Christmas is a magical day but that doesn’t make hospital bills, alcoholism, loneliness, or trauma disappear. Just when you think you’ve got this movie figured out, it’ll pull this jaw-dropping revelation out of left field. It fits perfectly with everything else but there’s no way you could’ve seen it coming.

I nearly forgot to mention a crucial aspect to the picture’s success: the animation. The visuals remove you slightly from reality - making all the happenstances feel organic - and then bring you back to reality by having characters who look "real”. Each design gives the members of the mismatched family so much personality you could “get” what they’re all about without hearing them utter a word. It’s beautiful but also ugly; a perfect harmony of style and story.

Every aspect of Tokyo Godfathers feels like it was meticulously considered. It’s so much more than the sum of its parts, a movie that fills you with all sorts of emotions and delivers a holiday tale like no other. Flowers by Mary Judge.

Mary Judge is an artist known for her complex and reductive works on paper and sculpture in cast concrete and painting in tempera acrylic. She was raised in rural New Jersey and attended Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, (BFA), Skowhegan School of Painting and Scultpure, Maine and Tyler School of Art (MFA) graduating from the Rome campus."

One of the most important experiences I had was to be invited to work in the ceramic factories near my homein Umbria. This completely changed my work in a number of ways and led to my mature work. For severalsummers I painted ceramics in the Grazia factory. I learned their particular technique, which involved the use of a perforated stencil (the “spolvero”) to transfer a detailed geometric design to the surface of a terracotta vessel. I saw this technique used by local artist to create drawings on paper and I decided to experiment using powdered pigment and my own imagery. At the same time, being in the environment of that factory, seeing the stacks of “multiples” (cups, plates, bowls etc) every day worked on my mind. One night I had a dream of afully realized artwork completely different than what I had been working on until then, which was “traditional”abstract painting."

When she opened the door, I swear that the snow in a three-foot radius melted.

She directed me to her studio. I passed flowery old-fashioned wallpaper in the hallway, a wooded banister and cracking wooden staircase, to enter a large sun-drenched room full of neatly organized tubes of paint and painting brushes. Mary’s work hangs on the walls: tender flowers in soft pastel colors. Mary explains how moved is she by nature’s objects: a stone, a tree or a flower. When I look out of the window I see the backyards of a line of houses, a swing, tall gray trees sleeping under a layer of snow. Mary smiles.

She has traveled a lot, to Europe, Asia, Australia. You can feel the influence of her journeys in her house– a Japanese door, Italian curtains. Mary teaches at Parsons and giggles when she tells me she has a great life, full of social events. My blue cup is still warm when I place it empty on her kitchen table."

HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
