Ch 7: Preamble To The Storm

Absolutely chaotic and stressful was the only way to describe that Friday.

The frenzy started not even five minutes after Felicity and Oliver arrived at Smoak Tech that morning. Oliver goes ahead Felicity to her office to make sure there are no unpleasant surprises waiting for her. Fortunately, the stalker didn't leave a gift or letter today.

As soon as Oliver declares the coast clear, Thea barges in, jabbering excitedly about the positive response in social media about the conference Felicity gave the day before.

"Both the company's and your name trended last night for hours, and #SmoakTechWithTheVeterans is still trending this morning. This is great, Felicity! There's a lot of talk about the good things you do for the community. Your fanbase is impressive."

"Fanbase?"

"Oh, yes, a lot of people can't stop fangirling over you."

"I don't want or need that, Thea."

"That might be true but you got it anyway. Deal with it," Thea says with pragmatic bluntness. "You have to see it as an opportunity."

"Opportunity to do what?"

"To inspire others, to be a beacon of hope," Thea gives Felicity a bored stare as she remarks the obvious. "Many have said they wish to do what you do, including little school girls. In fact, those messages got me thinking that we could sponsor a science program for primary schools on The Glades. I don't know... a sort of contest for kids of how to improve their community using technology."

Felicity ponders the idea while Oliver smiles at his sister. "That's a great idea, Speedy."

"Thanks but, actually, the original idea is Felicity's."

"Mine?"

"Yeah. A while ago, you told me you wanted to do something like this, so we should take advantage of all the fuss and publicity that tonight's function is bringing to launch this new program."

"Let's wrap up the hospital's gala first and then we can think about other things. We have our hands full with this and I don't want to take on more than we can handle."

"Okay, you're the boss. Just think about it."

With a nod, Felicity promises to do that while Thea focuses on the matter at hand. She points out the small changes in the speech Felicity needed to give later in the evening. As they talk, the assistant director in the Prosthetic Engineering division, Dave Tessler, came into the office, accompanied by Lewis Peterson, his second-in-command. He comes in bearing gifts. Dave brought in the coffee and cranberries muffins for everyone to enjoy.

"Ah! The men I wanted to see. And you, Dave, get extra points for delivering the goods from the java gods and sugar fairies."

Felicity's words summon up a bright smile on Dave's face, to which Oliver squints his eyes slightly as a lance of jealousy stings him.

I now enter the British Library having lugged a suitcase and stuffed rucksack of tech, novels, clothes, and aimlessness through the streets of whatever central borough I've ended up in. While my intelligence dries out, romance abounds. Leaking from my ears, spilled, dissipated - not sticky enough to materialise. Instead, my wandering of city streets is sweaty and breathless, aggravated and malnourished I rush. The wind bombards. My hair looks like shit.

I clumsy down to the basement and swing my baggage atop the clean marble counter. I am asked with cheer "What are you here to do today, love?".

I reply honestly "I have no idea" and ask "is this cloakroom free?".

Chasing pennies has become my purpose. money, cost, rent, bills, housing, beat from our tongues. Obsession of the imprisoned many and the despicable few. My eyes sag, pulled down by the weight of feather (oat milk flat white), feather (vanilla latte), feather (skinny latte extra hot). Your java prepared by me forever and always.

Free of luggage I head to the bathroom. If I am no longer of significance I have beauty instead. My early-twenties glow; my placeholder for greatness. My eyeliner hides the ache of importance-lost. My jokes are weighted. Heavy language harsher, offensive. Read into it or not. I believe there is no need. My state is surface level.

I am drowning. This gluey pond I strode into beaming, smiling, alight. Too tired to wade to the edge and heave myself over the bank. Instead, I sit and ponder my options silently. Pick a route of self-improvement. Better, bettering, betterment, best. But how am I to impress with glue in my eyes?

I want to share myself. I want a creativity that is mine, mine alone, and I want others to marvel at my gift. I want to be an icon. In anything. The field barely matters. I just want to matter. I want to produce, and have it mean something, to project, to move. Me on the shelf with 'the greats'. How do I commit? How do I find it? How do I do it? How do I achieve anything while existing as exhaustion itself?
