A Sneak Peek Into the World of Tiny Houses
Tumblr media
In recent times, tiny house kits have been all over the place with extensive media coverage and dedicated TV shows on their credit. But have you ever wondered about the origin and introduction of this immensely functional and popular housing solution? Of late, the percentage of tiny houses in the United States residential listings is significantly increasing, with more people adopting downsizing. Let’s know a thing or two about these functional, affordable, and innovative living spaces to understand their evolution and advantages.
The facts behind the tiny house movement
According to most reports and resources, the beginning of the tiny house movement that promoted living in a tiny house shell kit can be traced back to the 19th century. However, the exact date and time are still a mystery. The most impactful event in the tiny house movement was in the 1970s when popular artists like Allan Wexlar opted for a compact living experience. It was also around this time when books and articles were published promoting the art of compact living and motivating downsizing.
Another impactful name and figure in the modern tiny house movement is that of Jay Shafer. Many call him the father of the tiny house movement. Jay decided to shift to a very small house on wheels and published his book “The Small House Book,” discussing his thoughts behind moving to a tiny accommodation.
It was by the beginning of the 2000s that people, in general, started looking into the benefits of tiny houses and decided to adopt downsizing. Over the years, the concept of tiny houses has evolved with prefab structures, container houses, and houses on wheels, as per people's preferences. And now, with the millennials taking over as the major earning force, they look at these houses as an opportunity to reduce carbon footprints and lifestyle expenses.
The structural integrity of tiny house
The BOSS tiny houses are made from commercial-grade materials and are interlocked with steel studs to offer unmatched insulation. The wall and roof panels in the tiny house structures are weatherproof and can withstand temperature and weather variations efficiently. The roofs are manufactured from steel panels to endure a snow load of 30lbs/sqft.
Additionally, the tiny house shell for sale meets the international building codes and is equipped with plumbing and electrical fittings. BOSS tiny houses pay special attention to convenience and comfort, including double-tempered glass windows and ADA-compliant doors for tiny houses. However, there is no standard size for these houses as they can range from 64 -576 sqft. Plus, they are customizable and offer an efficient housing solution for the urban space.
The reasons behind the popularity of tiny houses
While initially, the concept of tiny houses emerged as a need to accommodate those without homes, the impressive benefits of these houses motivated people to switch to downsizing. There are several advantages of choosing tiny houses for dwelling; let’s check them out:
Financial benefits: Building a house or purchasing one is a huge financial burden for a commoner. Moreover, with soaring construction expenses, high labor costs, and high-interest rates for loans, traditional homes are becoming much out of reach for salaried individuals. The tiny houses, on the other hand, are cost-effective and can save significantly. Additionally, with a smaller home, the energy expenses will drop effectively, offering impressive financial benefits.
Reduced environmental impacts: Tiny houses are a great way of adopting an environment-friendly lifestyle. The restricted space dimension allows the use of essential amenities only, reducing the overall carbon footprint. One can also go off-grid by opting for solar energy solutions, thus reducing energy expenses significantly. Moreover, manufacturers like BOSS use 35% recycled materials to construct tiny houses, making for a sustainable choice.
Minimal maintenance time: The smaller area in the tiny house shell kit asks for minimal time for maintenance and more time for oneself. While traditional homes require expensive maintenance in terms of time and money, tiny homes will allow you more time for family, friends, or other activities rather than cleaning for hours.
BOSS is your one-stop solution for tiny houses
If you love simplicity and are motivated by the advantages and inspiring facts behind tiny houses, choose to downsize with BOSS. BOSS is a reliable and leading manufacturer of tiny houses and brings affordable housing solutions for you. BOSS tiny house kits come with a 5-year warranty and meet the international building codes. Visit the website to design your home today.

7 Tricks for Building a Tiny House for Cheap + One Thing You Should Never Skimp On
In my research, the average Tiny House costs around $25k to build. My house is no exception (click here for an explanation and breakdown of my Tiny House costs). Does that mean you have to build a $25k Tiny House? Certainly not. You CAN have a cheap Tiny House, built on a shoestring budget. Cheap is not necessary a bad word. If it bothers you, replace it with “thrifty.” In this article, I list…

Back Where it all Started
I didn’t choose the tumblr life, it chose me.
In 2010 when I was a freshman in college I used stumble upon and tumblr to pass the time on my fresh MacBook that the university gave every student.
I stumbled upon Jay Shafer’s Tumbleweed Tiny Homes and fell in love. The simplicity and creativity and coziness made me fall in love. I dreamt of all the places I could go, the things I could do if I was able to live affordably in my very own dream tiny house.
Since that time I’ve actively researched and invested time and money into the idea.
I’ve lived in several different situations since that time, traveled all over, and still love the feeling of small spaces and living in an environmentally friendly way.
I stayed in a large closet in berlin for two months, an attic apartment for a year, tiny bedrooms that barely fit my bed, and toured several small cabins and apartments.
I’m now at a place where I’m ready to buy land and start building.
This blog is dedicated to getting ideas out of my head, and thinking about  my guiding principles.

Jays Rally Late To Beat Twins.
Twins 8 Blue Jays 9 W-Shafer (1-0) L-Eades (1-1) SV-Watts (1)
The Minnesota Twins made the trip way up to Dunedin to play the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon. The ball was flying out of the ballpark on a cloudy afternoon in Florida. Michael Reed started the day off right with a lead-off single to left in the first inning. Ronald Torreyes followed with a single of his own. With two outs, a passed ball scored Michael Reed and the Twins were on the board. The Jays would answer in the bottom of the first. Randal Grichuk drilled a Preston Guilmet offering out to left for a lead-off blast. This tied the game at one after one inning of play. The Twins offense got back to work in the second. Ehire Adrianza led-off with a single and Lucas Duda walked. Later in the inning, Alex Kiriloff singled home a run and Michael Reed hit a sac fly to right. This put the Twins up 3-1 and they were at it again in the third. Jake Cave led-off the inning with a single and Mitch Garver doubled him home. Minnesota had a three-run lead then things fell apart in the bottom of the third. Dalton Pompey led-off with a single and Luke Maile walked. Randal Grichuk reached on a fielder’s choice to load up the bases. Fernando Romero then walked in two more runs and Austin Adams came on to pitch. Adams walked Justin Smoak to plate another run and the game was tied at four. Cavan Biggo followed with a two-run single to center and the Jays led 6-4. The Twins would rally in the fifth as Mitch Garver singled with two outs. Ehire Adrianza followed with a blast off Conor Fisk. The two-run homer tied the game at six after five frames. The Twins would regain the lead in the seventh. Tyler Austin smoked a Ryan Tepera offering out to center for a solo homer. The Twins were on top and kept the chain moving in the seventh. Mitch Garver doubled and Ehire Adrianza walked. With one out, Adam Rosales grounded into a fielder’s choice. That scored pinch-runner Brian Navaretto and the Twins were up 8-6. The Blue Jays would come right back in the bottom of the inning. Anthony Alford walked with one out and Richard Urena singled. Cal Stevenson hit a sac fly to left and Luke Maile singled. Brock Lundquist doubled home a run to tie the game at eight. Toronto would rally in the eighth inning. Rowdy Tellez walked up to the plate with one out and drilled a Ryan Eades fastball out to right for a solo homer. The Jays now had a one-run lead as we headed into the ninth inning. Justin Watts threw a clean ninth and the Jays outlasted the Twins in a long one in Dunedin.
-Final Thoughts- Preston Guilmet gave up a run and struck out two in one inning of work. Tim Collins struck out two in the second. Fernando Romero did not register an out and allowed five runs. Austin Adams walked two and struck out two in an inning of work. DJ Baxendale retired four of the six men he faced. Adalberto Mejia fanned two in one inning of work. Mike Morin was charged with two runs in 1 2/3 innings and Ryan Eades gave up a run in the eighth. Mitch Garver and Alex Kirlioff led the team with three hits on the day. Ehire Adrianza had two hits as well. The Twins hit 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. Tomorrow, the Red Sox come to Hammond Stadium. Nathan Eovaldi will face Jose Berrios in a pitching rematch from last Wednesday.

The forefather of the modern tiny-house movement is an artist named Jay Shafer, who built a 96-square-foot cabin for himself in 1999. At the time, he was in his early thirties and working as an adjunct art professor at the University of Iowa. “My first tiny house was the product of me not being able to earn enough money to build a big house or afford much more than very basic rent,” he told me. As a leader of the nascent movement, though, he tended to elide that detail from his narrative. Instead, he described his lifestyle as a Thoreauvian quest for transcendence through radical simplicity. “When I first started doing it, I wanted to appeal to the broadest possible audience,” he said. “The term affordable housing has such a bad rap.”[...] The ubiquity of tiny houses on-screen and their rareness in the real world have together had a Baudrillardian effect on public perception, creating the inaccurate impression that the movement is populated by privileged influencers who are insensitive to the fact that most people living in small spaces are forced into them by economic hardship. Perhaps as a result, over the past couple of years there has been some cultural backlash against tiny houses. “‘Going tiny’ implies that the person who is moving into a tiny house is doing so to escape their previous life of excess: They are coming from one place and going to another,” Doree Shafrir wrote in a much-shared BuzzFeed article. “This has made it, by definition, a middle-class movement…. And so the tiny house movement has an inherent privilege built in: Going tiny is a choice.” However, most tiny-house residents are not particularly well-off. While the poorest people tend not to buy tiny houses—purchasing any home requires capital—tiny living is popular among the widening group of working-class Americans who might have owned a traditional home a generation ago but have found themselves with bank statements or credit histories that have made that choice impracticable. Many are older, single women. The median price of a home in the US is $220,000, which most people finance with a mortgage. Tiny homes usually sell for $40,000 to $90,000 without land, and buyers typically pay cash or finance them with a property loan. [...]  Besides addressing homelessness, some developers hope that affordable tiny-house neighborhoods like Peak View can offer an upscale take on the much-maligned trailer park. They believe tiny houses could be less prone to not-in-my-backyard-ism than other flavors of affordable housing. While poverty has traditionally been concentrated in big cities and rural areas, it has fanned out to smaller cities and suburbs, where big apartment blocks might not be a feasible, or desirable, solution to the housing crunch; perhaps tiny houses could make sense in some of those places. Communities like Peak View have already appeared in Florida, Texas, and California. In 2014, Spur, Texas, population 1,318, declared itself America’s first tiny-house-friendly town, offering to sell little plots of land for $500 each. New York City mayor Bill de Blasio even mentioned tiny houses as an option in a housing plan published in 2017.
