Do 326 people 'like' Jeff Beck being dead?
There has been a lot of traffic on Micro Blog about ‘like’ buttons - as in should there be one? Some of those conversations have been repackaged and moved into other places - like this one from Dave Winer.
The challenge is that writers tend to see the like as a ‘nod’ of agreement with what they have written .. and at least as feedback …
“In real life there’s all kinds of non-verbal communication. you can nod your head, smile. We’ve come up with a similar language online, I don’t think there’s any more meaning in this. We’re being human. Not a huge surprise.”
💬 Dave Winer
I’m not so sure. I am far from consistent as to how I use likes and I am guessing I am not alone. BUT … But the point of this post is not to provide a counter argument - but rather highlight the inadequacy of the like button a measure of popularity.
You won’t have missed yesterday’s news of the passing of Jeff Beck.
Patti Smith used her newsletter to share the news and a link to just one example of Beck’s extraordinary guitar playing.
As of this morning she has 326 likes and 59 comments …. it is clear from the comments the sentiment - but the likes?
What are they liking?
The news he is dead?
The track from ‘Amused to Death’?
That the ‘liker’ is flagging their solidarity with her and Roger’s position on Palestine?
The fact she posted something - and they are bookmarking ‘seen’?
They just ‘auto like’ everything - and haven’t even read it? ^1
To be clear, I have no horse in the race. IF @manton added like buttons here -
it wont be the end of the world
i bet whether they are enabled will be under my control
Back to Jeff … one of the best comments was a simple
💔
[1] People don’t read - as an extreme example - even Readwise users, who you would have thought actually did … well … read! I

Legal Blogging is Still With Us – and Then Some
Blogging is still with us, writes Dave Winer, who gave rise to blogging over two decades ago.
Winer points that long time blogger, author and journalism professor, Jeff Jarvis went on CNN today to talk about Australia’s clamping down on social media’s use of news publishers’ content, among other things.
Jarvis is going on with CNN’s Brian Stelter, a former New York Times’ reporter, who got his start in journalism via blogging.
While traditional journalism seems to think blogging is over, per Winer, the evidence is to the contrary. “Blogging reshaped the world. Not only for good, of course.”
Journalism may look at the world as Facebook, and blogging, getting what these platforms have for news, sharing and commentary from traditional news journalism.
The flow can, and does go the other way. Blogs can be the source, as Winer has written many times.
So can social media. I’m on NBC’s Nightly News with Lester Holt and The 11th Hour with Brian Williams because I am reporting on Twitter and Facebook about midnight vaccines in Seattle because of freezer failure.
Rather than blogging’s genes still being in circulation, as Winer puts it. In the law, I see legal blogs in their infancy. Not just in the States, but worldwide.
Talking with seven lawyers getting ready to blog on a niche, this morning, there was a genuine interest in blogging the right way.
They weren’t chasing SEO, like some law firms. They were looking to offer insight and commentary to the public, to traditional news journalists (who cannot cover the niche), to other bloggers and their clients.
Blogging for them democratized legal journalism. Not only did blogging diversify who was reporting and providing commentary – expanded beyond traditional journalism and the legal publishing giants, but blogging diversified legal publishing to six women who, historically, fell in a group not been given the reigns to run to prominence.
Achieving career heights, being one of the only publishers in a niche, earning significantly more, contributing to secondary law and the sheer fun that comes from being part of journalism while practicing law, will keep legal blogging on the rise, not in the vestiges.

On Social Media
You may have noticed that some parts of yesterday’s blog post made it to other social networks, primarily LinkedIn. I did post a little to Twitter yesterday, but mostly personal stuff and not business-related. I’m having a bit of a clarifying moment when it comes to social media lately that I want to dig into a bit more. LinkedIn doesn’t suffer from this malady because of its nature, but depending on its members' ability to police themselves, it may only be a matter of time. This malady I refer to is the weaponization of social media and the appropriation of content.
Clearly, the whole point behind social media is engagement, but I don’t think any of us anticipated what has happened in the last 4 to 5 years. In retrospect, we should have. If you lived through the age of shock or conservative talk radio, you might have an inkling of what I mean. Someone says something outrageous, and it’s an almost Pavlovian response. We MUST engage. The part I don’t think we could have predicted was social media promoting the outrageousness to the degree they did. Social media might recognize the part they played in this mess one day, but I have a hard time continuing to participate in something designed to promote Shock's Culture for the sake of likes and dollars.
LinkedIn feels different somehow. Yes, it’s a social network, but it is populated by people who have a vested interest in maintaining a professional appearance. I’ve seen many times when someone tries to lob a metaphorical Molotov Cocktail into the mix, and someone says, “That’s not appropriate for this space.” I hope that means that legitimate content is King there, and the engagement follows as a result of the substance of that content, not on the controversy. For now, I’ll put my focus there and see how it goes.
The other issue I mentioned is the appropriation of content, and that’s discussed on next Wednesday’s show.
Just…stop already
A note totally unrelated to anything: Politicians can stop sending me emails now. You’re approaching “We can help you with your extended auto warranty” territory.
Rebundling The News
The great Dave Winer:
The news industry product needs to be re-bundled. I believe the rewards will be huge for the first publication that bets on this idea. They wouldn't be the first, btw -- My.Yahoo did it in the 00's. Have the guts to point to your competition. And if you have a paywall, send them some money and some readers. Now that Jeff Bezos is retired, and owns such a platform, I would stand up and applaud if they had the guts to try this out. I'd also line up to hook my blog into such a network. Not because my writing depends on making money from it, it doesn't, but to help disrupt the news industry that's daydreaming itself to death over distribution, competition and economics.
What I wouldn’t give to be able to subscribe to one feed with what I’ll call an “a la carte” option of news and editorial options. That was one of the great things about RSS Readers at the outset, but content is increasingly siloed or anything more than an excerpt is behind a paywall. I’ve learned never to click on an LA Times Article Link for example, because I know I will never see the story, I’ll get a splash page instead. Same with WaPo. Would I pay some money for the a la carte option I just mentioned? Possibly. Would you?
Some Links Of Interest…
From the Beeb:
Ms Khing, an aerobics teacher, posted her exercise video to Facebook on Monday morning.
At the time, Myanmar's army was in the process of a military coup, detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratically elected leaders from her party.
I don’t think you could be blamed if you were reminded of Baghdad Bob watching this.
Matthew at SLR Lounge is never buying another Sandisk SD Card:
Unfortunately, I’m done buying Sandisk SD cards. and I think you can see why. They seem to be more flimsy than any other memory card (make or model) I have ever had. Inevitably, they split open and spill their memory chip guts.
After looking at these pictures and my stash of Sandisk Memory Cards, I don’t have what you would call a Peaceful Easy Feeling about this. I have more than a few of these, and while I don’t put them through the paces, a professional photographer does, I would like to know they’re gonna hold up. It doesn’t look good, I’ll tell you that much.
From The Verge, Casey Newton talks about Clubhouse’s ‘South By Moment’:
The only social-networking moment I can compare it to in recent years would be the 2015 South by Southwest festival, when the streets of Austin were briefly overrun by people broadcasting themselves on Meerkat. Then, as now, the once-stable field of social networks hummed with a fresh sense of possibility.
I have an account at Clubhouse, which as of right now, lies dormant. I have a habit of opening accounts at different apps with my preferred handle so that no one else takes it and gets a taste of the app before passing judgment (Yes, including THAT one). Newton calls Clubhouse the ‘Medium of Podcasts’ in that it appears to democratize audio in a way that Anchor didn’t, and the experience is as clean and ‘radiant’ as Medium. I agree. I’ll be interested to see how the app is used as time goes on. The funny thing about democratizing media is that everybody is ‘the media.’ The downside to that is that everyone—including me—is ‘the media.’ Open source guys will love it. Matt Deegan over at Matt on Audio might be a bit skeptical…
At it’s worst, I’d say the content is basically the annoying self-promoters from LinkedIn given a microphone to talk to their echo-chamber. At it’s best you can say it’s a place for like-minded people to get together and have a discussion in a screen’s-off environment.
Matt seems to think this might lend itself to more of a panel or conference vibe, and I can see it. The trouble with that is I also see the self-appointed ‘gurus’ and marketers taking it over much like they’ve tried to do with podcasting the second they see money in it. (Rule One: Marketers. Ruin. Everything)

The yin and yang of Twitter and journalism
Note: This is something I originally wrote for the Columbia Journalism Review, where I’m the chief digital writer
In a recent post on CJR’s Galley discussion forum, we talked about a column from Farhad Manjoo entitled “Never Tweet,” in which the New York Times writer argued that Twitter is toxic for journalists, and that awe should disengage from it as much as possible. “Twitter is ruining American journalism,” he said bluntly. The column sparked been plenty of commentary agreeing with him (much of it on Twitter, ironically). But there has also been a significant amount of pushback—and not just from the usual Twitter-addicted cohort, but journalists from a variety of backgrounds, who see it as a valuable reporting tool. For example, HuffPost writer Ashley Feinberg said in an interview on Galley that while Twitter may be a nightmare for journalism, “it’s also allowed for some things that probably wouldn’t exist without it.”
“Whether we like it or not, Twitter is a huge part of how we do our jobs now, and you can either accept that it’s a necessary nightmare or you can try to pretend there’s some healthy way to use it. Either way it’s still going to be hell. I think the best thing any of us can do is realize that someone is always going to be mad, some people are always going to be acting in bad faith, and there’s really nothing we can do to game that, other than just being as honest as possible.”
City University of New York journalism professor Jeff Jarvis also disagreed with Manjoo’s piece, and expanded on why in an essay he published on Medium, entitled “Journalism is the conversation. The conversation is journalism.” A journalist’s duty, he said, is “to listen to the public they serve,” and then bring journalistic value (reporting, facts, explanation, etc.) to the public conversation about those issues. Also, Jarvis criticized Manjoo and CNN media writer Brian Stelter—who wrote a piece agreeing with much of what the New York Times writer said—for making their comments “from a position of extreme privilege.” It is fine for journalists with a public platform to make such pronouncements, Jarvis said, but Twitter serves a very real purpose for many others who don’t have such a platform for the issues they care about.
“If you are an African-American who is shopping or barbecuing or eating lunch or going into your own home when a white person calls the police on you, you do not have a newsroom of journalists who look like you who will tell your story. The outlet you have is a hashtag on Twitter. These stories are now, finally, making it into mainstream media only because #livingwhileblack exists as a tool for those forever unrepresented and unserved by mass media.”
Jarvis is seen by some as an apologist for technology companies, in part because CUNY’s News Integrity Initiative project is funded primarily by Facebook, and because he often argues that journalists should do more to learn about technology and social networks instead of shunning them. But his point is a good one: Even though Twitter is clearly dysfunctional in many ways, and encourages all kinds of bad behavior not just in journalists but in society at large, it still has powerful benefits when it comes to publicizing things that might not otherwise get attention from the mainstream media. Without Twitter, would movements like #BlackLivesMatter or #MeToo have gotten anywhere near the kind of traction they did? Likely not, as media writer Ron Mwangaguhung pointed out in our Galley discussion.
Developer and entrepreneur Dave Winer, whose RSS technology was crucial to the rise of blogging and podcasting, argues that instead of turning its back on technology, the media industry should make up for its past mistakes and use tech of all kinds to create the kind of level playing field that the social networks did—a playing field in which everyone can have a voice, not just journalists (this is something CJR is trying to do on a small scale with Galley). Tech writer Simon Owens, meanwhile, argues that Manjoo is exactly wrong. Not only is Twitter not making journalism worse, he says it is actually making journalism better—”by exposing journalists to their readers and giving once-marginalized groups a chance to influence the media conversation.”
Farhad seems to assume that it’s obvious that the Covington debacle being brought to light by Twitter was a bad thing. It wasn’t. It exposed the casual, everyday racism that’s endemic in this country. It exposed the powerful preying on the powerless. And the idea that Twitter is the main source of outrage culture and the pushing of bogus narratives is ludicrous. Remember the caravan story? It was pushed completely by mainstream news. Fox News has built a multi-billion dollar business on generating manufactured outrage.
Even some of those who agree with Jarvis about the utility of Twitter, however, think his essay overlooks some of the built-in risks of the technology, especially when it comes to journalism and even discussion more broadly. Josh Young, a developer who helped create Galley and is working on it in partnership with CJR, argues that seeing Twitter as a simple tool that journalists can use to participate in discussion is naive, since the service also has its own internal agenda, as seen in the algorithmic filtering of posts, etc. And this kind of structural consideration, in many cases, “incentivizes bad behavior,” he says. Seeing anti-Twitter sentiment as just a case of “moral panic,” like the criticism of comic books or television, misses this crucial point.
So then, do we have to choose sides in this debate—whether Twitter is inherently bad or inherently good? Not really. In fact, the urge to unquestioningly accept one “hot take” over the other is probably one of the negative aspects of a Twitter discussion about any reasonably complicated subject. It’s entirely likely that Twitter, like so many other things the Internet has brought us, is simultaneously hugely positive in many ways and hugely negative in other ways. Could we somehow arrange it so that we could have all the good aspects without the bad ones? Probably not.
The yin and yang of Twitter and journalism was originally published on mathewingram.com/work

Mark Ruffalo Theatre Work: The Tent Show - LA Times Review
THEATER REVIEW : ‘Tent Show’:
Speaking of Vice and Men : Justin Tanner’s latest work employs his familiar skills–the dialogue overlaps and flows like a dream–and the engaging dramas are exacerbated by the characters’ drug dependencies.
October 05, 1994|LAURIE WINER | TIMES THEATER CRITIC
“The Tent Show,” the new play by the boy wonder of L.A. theater, is Justin Tanner’s take on “Deliverance.” It’s about men: Men on a camping trip, men pretending to bond, men dragging the rat race of corporate life right into the wilderness, where they all agree it doesn’t belong. While no one is asked to squeal like a pig, they nervously assure each other that “it’s a good thing we’re all secure about being guys.” The play is alternating in repertory at the Cast Theatre with eight other works by Tanner, the complete canon. For anyone who cares about fresh voices on the stage, this festival is not to be missed.
“The Tent Show” is a bit of a departure for the playwright–it’s set away from the low-rent apartments where the women toke and watch “I Love Lucy” in “Pot Mom,” where a grease-stained Barbie comes home from the graveyard shift at the doughnut shop and bickers with Ken in “Still Life With Vacuum Salesman,” and where a naive girl encounters the roommate from hell in “Bitter Women.” As always, the dialogue overlaps and flows like a dream, and the heated dramas are hilarious, engaging, familiar and yet absolutely original. And, as is often the case, those dramas are exacerbated by the characters’ recreational drug dependencies.
The trouble with “The Tent Show” is that men don’t seem to interest the playwright as much as women do. At least, they don’t seem to contain the endless possibilities for surprise and redemption that make Tanner’s female characters so delightful.
Oh well. “The Tent Show” is still the work of a gifted playwright doing what he does best–mischievously letting people reveal their real selves while building elaborate constructs of how they would like to be seen.
The guys on the camping trip are Doug (Tony Maggio), who owns the nice tent and who would like to be lord of the manor both there and at L.A. Title, the company where the men work. He doesn’t want anyone touching his new Land Rover or wasting the batteries on the TV, phone or “lantern” he’s brought along. But he consents to share the tent with Jeff (Mark Ruffalo), his nearest equal, even though Jeff is in trouble at work. Nothing big, just embezzling to support a coke habit.
The other two guys will have to sleep outside. Unforgivably, Walter (Jon Palmer) has allowed his righteous spirituality to intrude on guy fun. Charged with supplying food and drink, Walter, a proselytizer for a self-realization seminar called “Truth Quest,” has chosen to bring soybean hot dogs and nonalcoholic beer. To Jeff, this constitutes a “horrendous, (expletive) nightmare.”
And Billy (Jon Amirkhan), well, Billy is just hopeless. A mere mailroom employee, Billy has been invited only because several other guys dropped out of the trip, after some kind of firing bloodbath at the company. Doug orders him about like a servant, specifying what Billy may and may not touch in the tent. Even the ostensibly enlightened Walter treats Billy with contempt, saying things like “Peon or not, you’re part of the whole.”
Actually, Billy is a bit slow. His attempts to express a rhapsodic connection to nature engender about as much respect as his salary. “I love seeing animals, you know, in person,” goes one of his odes. As Billy, Amirkhan is a master at letting his face fill up with hope and then fall tragically with each fresh rebuff from his supposed betters. But his bounce-back ratio is quick, and he’s always ready to feel the pain of a new insult.
Bounce-back ratios are high in Tanner, as are unexpected shifts in the power structure. The rivalries and divisions intensify with the arrival of a stray camper named Julie (Laurel Green), who seems interested in Billy until he utters the words mail room . Green, the only actor who appears in all nine Tanner plays, here offers a slightly harder variation of the utterly transparent, silky voiced phony she usually plays.
Under Tanner’s direction, the rest of the men never sentimentalize fundamentally unlikable characters. Amazingly, they’re all fascinating without being either likable or unusual in any way. As Bernadette, the tough-talking secretary who gets a big charge out of all the office intrigue, especially if her boss is getting screwed, Thea Constantine is almost as funny as she is in “Bitter Women,” and that’s saying quite a lot.
It’s interesting to see Tanner work with characters who care about the rat race and get caught in it. I would guess he sides more with Billy, who one of the men accurately likens to the fool on the cliff. When offered advice on improving his career, Billy says he doesn’t want to climb, he just wants to hang. But one gets the sense that, whether he wants to or not, Tanner is about to do some major climbing.
* “The Tent Show,” Cast Theatre, 804 N. El Centro Ave., Hollywood, Friday, 8 p.m., Saturday-Sunday, 3 p.m. Ends Nov. 6. $15. (213) 462-0265. Running time: 2 hours.

Gracias.

Not just any blog, but a blog about AWS news and answers to questions that arise internally and externally in regard to AWS. The AWS News Blog.
AWS, if you are not familiar with it, is a subsidiary of Amazon that provides on-demand cloud computing platforms to individuals, companies, and governments, on a metered pay-as-you-go basis. AWS dominates the cloud computing market and is the fastest growing Amazon segment, representing well over half of the company’s operating income – $7.3 billion in 2018, up almost $3 billion from the year before.
Barr celebrated fifteen years on the AWS Blog with a post about why the blog, why him and the status of AWS blogging today.
Read the whole post, Barr’s story is a good one.
I found it interesting that Barr was over at Microsoft, where I first witnessed large scale corporate blogging by developers. I was trying to figure out blogging from my garage. He also had an interest in Dave Winer’s work with XML and RSS – keys to us following the blogging of others, via syndication.
Instrumental for any blogger – corporate or legal blogger – is passion for what you’re going to cover. The light bulb went on for Barr that AWS was going to big a thing for Amazon when he saw web services being made available for developers en masse. Baar’s developers relations plan included a blog from the start.
Like all of us, Barr was not a natural born blogger – nor a good writer.
“I struggled a bit with “voice” in the early days, and could not decide if I was writing as the company, the group, the service, or simply as me. After some experimentation, I found that a personal, first-person style worked best and that’s what I settled on.”
Topics came in a random way (still do for me).
“In the early days, we did not have much of a process or a blog team. Interesting topics found their way in to my inbox, and I simply wrote about them as I saw fit. I had an incredible amount of freedom to pick and choose topics, and words, and I did my best to be a strong, accurate communicator while staying afield of controversies that would simply cause more work for my colleagues in Amazon PR.”
The AWS blog has become key to AWS’ growth and developer relations. Barr’s time allocated to blogging as grown, and “now stands at about 80%.”
Blog posts are no longer done randomly.
“We now have a strong team and an equally strong production process for new blog posts. Teams request a post by creating a ticket, attaching their PRFAQ (Press Release + FAQ, another type of Amazon document) and giving the bloggers early internal access to their service. We review the materials, ask hard questions, use the service, and draft our post. We share the drafts internally, read and respond to feedback, and eagerly await the go-ahead to publish.”
Rather than press releases pushed to the media and a few bloggers, the regular practice for law firms and legal tech companies, Amazon used the blog for developer relations. It’s developers, after all, that are going to be asking the tough questions, and ultimately be influencing the purchasing of AWS services.
With over 3100 posts under his belt, and plenty more on the way, here’s what Barr focuses on when writing a post.
Learn & Be Curious – This is an Amazon Leadership Principle. Writing is easy once I understand what I want to say. I study each PRFAQ, ask hard questions, and am never afraid to admit that I don’t grok some seemingly obvious point. Time after time I am seemingly at the absolute limit of what I can understand and absorb, but that never stops me from trying.
Accuracy – I never shade the truth, and I never use weasel words that could be interpreted in more than one way to give myself an out. The Internet is the ultimate fact-checking vehicle, and I don’t want to be wrong. If I am, I am more than happy to admit it, and to fix the issue.
Readability – I have plenty of words in my vocabulary, but I don’t feel the need to use all of them. I would rather use the most appropriate word than the longest and most obscure one. I am also cautious with acronyms and enterprise jargon, and try hard to keep my terabytes and tebibytes (ugh) straight.
Frugality – This is also an Amazon Leadership Principle, and I use it in an interesting way. I know that you are busy, and that you don’t need extra words or flowery language. So I try hard (this post notwithstanding) to keep most of my posts at 700 to 800 words. I’d rather you spend the time using the service and doing something useful.
I started to publish a blog during a year long covenant not to compete with LexisNexis. I was noodling around in my garage thinking of what to do next. When I stumbled into a blog, I saw it as delivering on two fronts.
One, I wanted learn to write, something I was never very good at. Two, I needed to get passionate about something to do for work. I feared, at then 47 years old, that I would never have another good idea fueled with passion to start another company. Maybe this blog thing would take me there.
So I was struck with some of Barr’s personal thoughts on blogging.
“Writing – Although I love to write, I was definitely not a natural-born writer. In fact, my high school English teacher gave me the lowest possible passing grade and told me that my future would be better if I could only write better. I stopped trying to grasp formal English, and instead started to observe how genuine writers used words & punctuation. That (and decades of practice) made all the difference.
Career Paths – Blogging and evangelism have turned out to be a great match for my skills and interests, but I did not figure this out until I was on the far side of 40. It is perfectly OK to be 20-something, 30-something, or even 40-something before you finally figure out who you are and what you like to do. Keep that in mind, and stay open and flexible to new avenues and new opportunities throughout your career.”
So much to be learned from successful bloggers.
For lawyers and law firms, that means sticking your head up and looking at the blogging being done by corporations, professionals and businesses outside the law.
For me, I am going to revisit my blog’s focus so that at least a portion of my blogging is focused on legal blogger relations for LexBlog. Maybe get some of our developers, support and editorial people contributing.
To show you why you need to stick your head up to see who you learn from, Jeff Barr accepted my Facebook friend request a few months ago when I had no idea he was part of the AWS blog. I just knew he was the Chief Evangelist at AWS, a heck of an interesting job, and that he posted interesting items from Seattle and around the world.
I’ve picked up plenty of lessons from Barr already, and I am sure I will learn more by following the AWS News Blog from now on.

“I am an American, nothing is going to change that, but if you asked me do I feel this is the greatest country ever, I’d say that’s an idea we have to purge from our minds, the US is the opposite, it’s a fat, lazy, spoiled, ridiculous excuse for a country. If we want to amount to anything we need to take a 180 degree turn now.”

Costa Blanca South Bowls Roundup 3 Feb 19
El Rancho Bowls Club Monday morning found the Pintos playing the Dalmations at San Miguel in a nippy and tricky wind, but the Mustangs persevered and came away with a very good result, taking 4 of the 5 rinks and the overall shots. Malc Sykes, John Skipper and Jim Gracie 20-10. Ann C Taylor, Denise Morgan and Bob Taylor 20-16. Ron Greenstreet, Diane Yates and Bob Morgan 20-13. Irene Thomson, Keith Cunningham and Eddie Thomson 20-16. Brian Gilham, Paul Durham and David Whitworth 13-20. Meanwhile the Raiders had a bye.The Palominos were at home to another San Miguel team, the Pointers, who went away with all the points. But there is no shame in that, as all continue to hone their skills and gain experience, with two of the rinks losing by just one shot. On Friday morning the Rangers took on Emerald Isle Outlaws at home and although they took just one rink, they lost another by just one shot and had another close match. However with the introduction of 5 rink matches and more team, I think some players are in a lower division than they would have been and it is only fun after all. Meanwhile the Mustangs were at San Luis playing the Tigers and played some tough matches, but came away just the one rink, but we had good fun and some interesting bowls. In the afternoon the Broncos played the Miners at Mazarron and put in a good performance to come away with 2 rinks.   For further membership information contact Sheila Cox at [email protected] or Brian Taylor on 965077093 or at [email protected] COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB For the third time in seven days Country Bowls played host to a team from La Siesta ( they must like us! ). The Pioneers arrived full of optimism but left feeling down after a heavy defeat. Well done Flamingos. Winning rinks: Agnes Burke, Pat Ray & Brian Ray 30 – 8, Rob Hallam, Graham Richardson & Jim Rennie 16 – 12, Craig Dyson, John Burke & Dennis Birkett 25 -11, John Jukes, Derek Jiggins & Geoff Paylor 20 – 9. Great result. Middle of the league Country Bowls welcomed leaders Greenland’s Cedars to a wet and windy miserable Friday morning in the Valle Del Sol. The Cubs stacked up ready to do battle and try to improve on their 10 – 2 defeat from the first leg. Everyone dug deep and the standard of bowling was exceptional, the Cubs held their own at the half way mark. The wind continued to blow and the bowling didn’t ease. In the end, the newly developed Cubs for this season took the spoils on three rinks and drew on one giving an overall score of 9 – 3 to the Cubs. Winning rinks; Chris Stevens, Craig Dyson & Andy Bryce. Steve Mattison, Agnes Burke & Lynne Bryce. Sandra McIlroy, Dot Davies & Peter Robins. What a fantastic and encouraging result. Well done Cubs. In the afternoon the Geckos travelled to Quesada to play a strong team currently lying third, just one point behind the second place team La Siesta Golds. Quesada proved to be too strong for the Geckos winning on three rinks and winning the overall shots. The Geckos winning teams are; Pat Patton, Dennis Wade & Brian Patton, Sylvia Rennie, Jean Turner & Jim Rennie. A reasonably good performance by the Geckos against such a strong team away from home. We only managed one winner so congratulations to the rink of Roy Thompson, Dennis Wade, Fred Trigwell and Brian Patton who won 19 - 12. One of our other men’s rinks had a very close match but were just pipped at the post.  In spite of the result a good day was had by all as both the weather and the company were excellent.  This was a good experience to play with what you would call ‘better bowlers’.  Many thanks to   Country Bowls for hosting the event and providing a very good meal afterwards. On Monday the Falcons in the Discovery Division were away to Quesada Rubies.  Not a good result for us as we only won on one rink.  Our winning rink was:  Debbie Perryman Fred Trigwell and Barry Evans 14 – 12.  The final result being 55 shots for to 83 against.  2 points to Horadada to 10 for Quesdada.  Onwards and upwards Falcons, keep going. Friday saw Horadada Royals away to San Miguel Boxers.  The weather was a bit iffy. Will it rain or not?  The rain stayed away till the last 2 ends.  It came down quite heavily and everything changed!  Again not a good result for Horadada.  But team don’t despair, we had one winning rink and as is unusual for a report, I feel I have to mention the one rink that was a nearly!  It was down to the last end and when rain postponed play, the skips were still to bowl. Not looking good for Horadada as we were 4 shots down, then our skip came in and moved the jack back to give us two shots up.  Nail biting stuff, have we just got it?  No, ‘cause opposition skip came in with last wood and claimed shot.  Horadada lost by 2 shots.  Our winning rink was: John Goddard, Jack Linehan and Barry Evans 18 – 15.    Well played Guys.  Final score was shots for 70 to 120 against.  Points gained 2 to 10 against. Keep ‘em bowls a rollin’ Horadada.  We can show ‘em! Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment.  Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.  Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659139129 for more information. We are also on Facebook  Quesada Bowls Club Report by Dee Stephenson In the South Alicante Winter League Quesada Pearls travelled to San Miguel to play the Alsations this week. After a very competitive and close match, the Pearls won on 3 rinks, lost one and drew one. So they won overall 9 - 3 points with the shots 91-88. This means they’ve held on to their 4th place in the league just 2 points behind San Miguel Beagles. Meanwhile, Quesada Diamonds entertained San Miguel Beagles at home. Good mornings bowling with some really close scores, 3 rinks were won on the last end, against a very strong San Miguel side. Despite some close games, the Diamonds only won on one rink so the result was a win for San Miguel 10-2. Reflecting the tight match, the overall shots were close at 101-96. The Rubies had a very successful morning when they played Horadada Falcons winning the match 10-2 and the shots 83-55. On Friday, in the Southern League, Quesada Swans were up against Montemar Torreadors, who were on form and held the Swans at bay winning the match 8-4 and the shots 90-84. Whilst Quesada Swifts hosted Country Bowls in an afternoon match. Both teams were on good form and there were some really tight heads and close finishes. Three rinks were decided by one shot two in Country bowls favour, one won by the Swifts. Overall the points were 8-4 to the Swifts with the shots 97-73. In the Winter league, Quesada played away at Greenlands and won the match 10-2 points, with 91-67 shots.
