"Wives of Sango"
#artist #JeffDonaldson
Reposted from @nmaahc Wives of Sango by Jeff Donaldson depicts three women that are symbolic representations of deities in the #Yoruba religion of Nigeria. They also are the wives of #Sango—deity of fire, thunder, and justice. ⁣
On the left is the orisa #Oya, who is the goddess of the river Niger, dynamism, tornadoes, feminine leadership, and justice. #Oba, the central figure, is goddess of the Oba river. To the right is #Osun the goddess of the Oshugbo river, who represents love, wealth, and fertility. Although distinct in their own right, together they share a common bond, the revolutionary battle to gain freedom from mental, social, and political oppression. ⁣
According to Donaldson’s these #orisas are a visualization of the present, an invitation to action, and a basis for hope in the future. Learn more in our exhibition #Reckoning: Protest. Defiance. Resilience. at www.nmaahc.si.edu/reckoning⁣ (link in bio)

AfriCOBRA IS Black History. Images here are from 'AfriCOBRA: Messages to the People,' edited by Dr. Jeffreen Hayes and published by @gregoryrmiller and @mocanomi This is an essential publication on the radical collective whose name stands for "African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists"—founded by Gerald Williams, Jae Jarrell, Wadsworth Jarrell, Barbara Jones-Hogu and Jeff Donaldson in Chicago, 1968, and still active today. "It’s NATION TIME and we are searching," Donaldson is quoted. "Our guidelines are our people—the whole family of African people, the African family tree. … Our people are our standard for excellence. We strive for images inspired by African people. … Art for the people and not for critics whose peopleness is questionable." Pictured: GERALD WILLIAMS, Say It Loud, 1969 BARBARA JONES-HOGU, High Priestess, 1969 NAPOLEON JONES-HENDERSON, African Solar, 1970 JAE JARRELL, Going to NYC, 1994 JEFF DONALDSON, Stone Singer, 1999 WADSWORTH JARRELL, Black Family, 1968 Read more about the book via linkinbio. #blackhistory #africobra #geraldwilliams #sayitloud #barbarajoneshogu #highpriestess #napoleonjoneshenderson #africansolar #jaejarrell #goingtonyc #jeffdonaldson #stonesinger #wadsworthjarrell #blackfamily #nationtime #africanamerican #jeffreenhayes https://www.instagram.com/p/CadIo93JT4G/?utm_medium=tumblr
