I was rewatching Monster High: The Movie (2022) cause the sequel's coming out next week and upon rewatch, the fucking signs that Komos was actually Hyde's son not from the writing but from the COSTUME DESIGN for him was so striking to me that I'm pissed I didn't realize sooner.

Not only does he have the glasses, sideswept bangs and general human appearance of Jackson (minus the horns, I think in this universe Komos's mom was like a centaur or something, would explain why he's still so human-looking besides the horns), but there's nods to Jackson and Holt specifically all throughout his outfits in the movie.

(Also for the sake of ease I'm referring to the teacher as Komos cause typing Hyde Jr. or something constantly is gonna drive me nuts)

First, there's his main outfit which we see across the film as well as in promotional images, and YOU CANNOT FUCKING TELL ME the posing for his promo pic wasn't an intentional nod to Jackson LIKE LOOK AT THIS SHIT!!

The main thing that strikes me is the inversion of the yellow/gold and blue with Komos's tie and shirt, also the fact the colors are significantly desaturated in comparison to Jackson's flashy yellow and blue. My interpretation of this is that it's representative of the bad-guy/villainous interpretation Komos represents, in comparison to Jackson/Holt which seem to be a rare good-guy/positive interpretation of Jekyll and Hyde. It's like, yes this is the Jekyll/Hyde guy of this gen, his outfits are nods to G1 but is otherwise an entirely different character than Jackson/Holt. Which I mean, I do respect the writers for not having Komos be this gen's Holt Hyde and just as "Hyde's son," I feel like separating the two (three??) characters is and was the best decision. Just two different interpretations of the "descendant of Jekyll and Hyde" thing.

Another part of the decision to go with Jackson's more traditionally nerdy or professional type of fashion style is interesting to me. Komos does not want to be perceived as his Jekyll half, he wants to just be Hyde, hence why he refers to himself as Hyde's son not Jekyll and Hyde's son. And yet, it's like he can't deny his human Jekyll side. To be honest Jekyll's only referenced a few times in the movie (which okay, Hyde's the monster half, I get that, but you'd think he'd be a little more important yeah??) so it makes sense they're focusing on Hyde more but I did find it an interesting decision.

Next there's THIS OUTFIT which on rewatch made me audibly point like that soyjak meme like "THAT'S A REFERENCE TO JACKSON AND HOLT CAUSE OF THE YIN YANG DUAL COLOR SHIT"

Red and blue are mainly Holt's colors, but Holt's signature outfit's shirt is also dual-toned, split through the middle.

It's just with Komos, there's less of an emphasis on the yin-yang thing Jackson & Holt had in their interpretation of Jekyll & Hyde -- he's unbalanced in comparison to them -- hence it's not a black and white cardigan. Also, THE BOWTIE! Can't get more obvious with the Jackson nods than that.

There's also this outfit I wanted to mention, the one he wears during the Founders' dinner toward the end of the movie. Notice It's fully red-toned, where his initial outfit was mainly blue-toned, and the cardigan showed the transition between. It's like at first, he's studious and mellow-natured with a bit of flare but nothing too crazy -- Jekyll. Then when he's wearing the cardigan, he asks Clawdeen about her research, almost insisting she provide him the information she's gathered because of his desperation to lose the duality going on with him. And finally, at the end, he takes the potion his father made, fully embracing Hyde and abandoning Jekyll once and for all.

That's pretty much all I wanted to mention regarding the outfits, but I remember when I first watched the movie, I was severely disappointed that Jackson/Holt were basically confirmed to not be making a return in this generation (or at least in the live-action films but I imagine it'd be pretty confusing to have two characters represent the same specific monster character in the same gen). They were a really underutilized character concept outside of Ghouls Rule, and I feel like especially with Clawdeen being half human in this version that they could've been friends or something!

Maybe Jackson/Holt could've served as the antagonist of the film in Komos's position, but not out of malice, moreso misguidance. Holt was kinda hinted at in his diaries to have depressive symptoms, it would've been interesting to explore that with how he might have low self-esteem because of his half-human-ness. Also, apparently Deuce in G1/G2 was half human too? Why did they get rid of that this gen??? I don't know why they keep shifting representation around at times.

Questionable decision making aside, I actually did enjoy this movie a lot. From an objective standpoint it's a DCOM-quality movie with average writing (except Frankie bro they were funny as hell in this movie), slightly more fashionable outfits than DCOMs, and a basic self-acceptance plot. There's several movies, including one or two in G1, with similar but better-executed writing and storytelling and similar themes. But DAMMIT I can't get enough of this movie when I see it. It's a comfort movie. :'D

I could go ON about the Jackson/Holt erasure all throughout this movie, especially with the rumors it was based off an abandoned movie concept for the two back in G1, but this post is too long already and I've distracted myself from my work enough. :'D If anyone on this side of Tumblr wants to hear that ramble, I shall ramble about it another day.

Now then let me make you insane…. Just a bit.

Ok so I guess I’m an aspiring gymnast now cause this is a Stretch!

But a couple of months ago I found out that the cards on Mike’s bulletin board are garbage pail kids cards, one of which is called Evil Eddie.

And I just went back to that post and thought “hmm, what if there’s something about Edward Creel?”

So, as the insane person that I am, I googled garbage pail kids cards that have the name “Henry” in it first and then “Edward” instead of just Eddie.

And well….

One thing I learned about garbag pail kids cards is that one image can have multiple (i think it’s always two) different names….

(definitely a reference to Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde)

And I can imagine that they probably had to buy these cards in a bundle? Like, I don’t think they just bought four cards for the set design/prop department lmao. And all the cards that they put up in Mike’s room (that we can see) also have the same names as other characters from the show so mayyyyybee….. maybe we’ll see these two cards in s5?👀

But yeah idk, again, kinda in my gymnast era🤸

I totally agree that "halved" Henry and “evil" Edward are based on Jekyll and Hyde, much like Henry and Edward Creel seem to be, given that the book covers and stage performance/advertisments for J+H seem to be direct inspirations for the TFS promo art:

and it’s so funny to me, how we’ve essentially determined that Eddie Munson delivers subtext/foreshadowing for Edward Creel, and then Mike has the Eddie/demobat version on his board, like you said:

He’s not the evil Eddie were looking for, but he hints at him given the double-persona thing.

Personality: Outwardly kind, extroverted, charitable, graceful, honorable, does what he can to help others in need. Inwardly struggles with depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and occasionally suicidal ideations. He believes that the emotions he hides from others make him evil, despite all the good he does on a regular basis, and wishes to separate himself from them entirely. He’s too afraid of the judgment he might receive if he tries to talk about them to anyone. Burning inside him is a violent rebel whom he is terrified of letting the rest of the world see.

Background: Born in early June of 1962 to a wealthy neurosurgeon and his lovely housewife in Boston, Henry Jekyll had almost his entire life planned out for him. He was to be the student council president, the star of his high school basketball time, prom king, a medical student at Harvard, and eventually a neurosurgeon like his father. Henry, of course, grew less and less enthused about this as he grew older, wondering if life held more for him than his family’s reputation. He developed a love of punk rock in his teen years, which later led to an even greater love of heavy metal in his late teens and early twenties, but his father made it well known that he did not approve. That was the majority of the nature of their relationship; Henry would find something that he greatly enjoyed, and his father would brutally rip it to shreds, telling the boy that it was beneath him, and that he should focus instead on his studies and other things befitting of their station. Once he was away at university, things got marginally better for Henry, despite the stress of medical school. He was somewhat freer to discover more about himself and explore his interest in music, buying an electric guitar behind his father’s back and diving headfirst into teaching himself to play. It wasn’t long before he fell hard for the college party scene and punk lifestyle. Parties and pub crawls, leather jackets with obscene or anti-establishment patches and ripped band t-shirts, motorcycles, and the discovery of his bisexuality. It had to be the best few years of his life! Until his grades started slipping, and his father started hearing rumors of his son’s rebellious streak. The old man was furious, of course, and marched his way over to Harvard to confront Henry, violently threatening to cut him off and disown him if he did not conform. On top of it all, he revealed that Henry was arranged to be married to the daughter of a family friend as soon as he finished his residency, a timid and sweet young woman named Emma Carew, and threatened to move the wedding up to the end of that month if he didn’t stop his reckless carousing. Terrified, Henry fell back into glum step with what his father expected of him, believing that he had been wrong to seek an escape from the perfect life his father had worked to provide for him. He graduated at the top of his class despite his setbacks, completed his residency, married Emma despite barely knowing her, and became a neurosurgeon at an acclaimed hospital. Henry and his wife were fairly at odds; he tended to throw himself into his work and charity, while she became obsessed with their social lives. The two rarely talked, but found that they agreed on many things, including not wanting children and having a strong aversion to the conservative politics that they were raised with. Still, both of them knew that they were not in love. Emma could tell that her husband was totally miserable beneath the kind mask he wore, but she did not know how to approach him about it and thus stayed quiet for as long as she could. However, after twenty years of drifting apart and actively being shut out, Emma could no longer take the growing silence between them. She confronted him about how unsatisfied she was, unloading all of her grievances and frustrations, only to find Henry’s responses to be hollow and severely lacking. The truth was that he wanted to scream, to fight back against her accusations, to get angry, to throw things at the wall and curse both her and his lonely existence. He wanted to explode, like he’d seen other husbands do when their marriages had fallen apart, but the memory of his father’s temper and berating him about what was appropriate for a gentleman lingered in his mind. He couldn’t let her see that side of him. Couldn’t expose the raging monster that had been building and being buried inside of him for all those years. He’d rather die, he thought, than hurt her like his father had hurt him. After another year of arguments and nights spent in separate rooms, the two finally got a divorce, and Henry dived even deeper into his work, scouring articles and old medical journals for a clinical method of separating the negative aspects of his personality entirely from the rest of it. He no longer wanted to feel that rage or devastation, no longer wanted to hear that voice in the back of his head telling him to jump off of a roof or kill those who had wronged him, or that he was horribly and irredeemably evil no matter how much good he tried to do. After another year of experiments with various drugs and serums, he finally developed one that he believed would either work or kill him, and tested it on himself without hesitation. It did neither, instead bringing all of the negative thoughts and emotions he’d always repressed to the surface and allowed them to consume him entirely. Despite there being no actual physical transformation of his body, when Henry glanced at himself in the mirror, he saw an entirely different person, horribly ugly with a wicked smile. Not wanting to believe that this entity, this terrifying shadow could ever be part of him, Henry dubbed him Edward Hyde. Edward was violent, quick to anger, loud, and unrepentant. He outwardly condemned shame, refusing to mask who he was and what he felt, and was as destructive as an F1 tornado. He was also passionate in love and lust, falling head over heels for Lucy Harris, the sultry and talented lead stage performer at a club named The Red Rat despite being close to his age. The two connected when he went to see her show one night after taking the drug, hitting it off almost as soon as she sat at his table. After month, Henry was addicted to the Hyde Serum, taking it habitually almost every night despite hating Hyde himself. Lucy and Hyde became closer and closer over the years, though she thought him to be Henry Jekyll the entire time. Eventually, their relationship grew to be sexual in nature, essentially a friendship with benefits and no strings attached between two healthy adults in their late fifties. Edward loved it; Henry was deeply ashamed of the promiscuity. He also was ashamed of the brutal fights Edward would start for practically no reason, which gradually got more and more violent until Henry’s friends could no longer stand to be around him for fear of being sent to the hospital. Even Lucy began to pull away. Henry viewed himself and Edward to be monstrous, convincing himself that they could not go on existing as they currently were. He has vowed to find away to erase Hyde from existence, even if it means ending himself, as well, and has tried to ween himself off of the Hyde Serum.

Verses:

V; main - Henry is a broken and lonely man who is searching for a way to eradicate Hyde.

V; past - Covers everything between the end of his residency and the creation of the Hyde Serum.

V; university - Covers his time in medical school. Andrew Garfield is his FC for this verse.

V; acceptance - Henry, after stumbling across the widely popular video game Persona 4 and playing it as a coping mechanism, is inspired to try with Hyde what the students in the game did with their Shadows. He takes a very small dosage of the serum, enough to bring Hyde out but not enough to let him take over, goes to the mirror, and has an honest talk with the side of himself that he once hated, finally accepting that it is indeed a part of him. He then destroys the rest of the serum and seeks therapy in an effort to make even more progress toward bettering himself and becoming whole again. He also throws himself back into listening to and playing rock music, as well as seeking out other things that bring him joy and other strong feelings. In this verse, he has three tattoos: a small semicolon on his inner left wrist, a swarm of bat silhouettes on his upper right arm and shoulder, and a stylized tarot card of the Death Arcana on his inner right forearm.

V; Stranger Things - In the summer of 1985, disgraced and disowned 23-year-old Henry Jekyll rolls into Hawkins, Indiana, looking for a place to lay low while he tries to get back on his feet after being kicked out by his overbearing father. Desperate for money, he takes a job at Starcourt Mall, and is soon taken on as a roommate by hunky lifeguard Billy Hargrove, who has recently managed to move into his own apartment. The two don’t get along well, being polar opposites, but when Billy comes home late one night, beat up and looking absolutely haunted, Henry knows something is very wrong. He puts aside his experiments with personality altering drugs aside in favor of attempting to help Billy through whatever is ailing him, and is soon dragged into a world of monsters and mayhem. His FC for this verse is Andrew Garfield. Post season three, he has the same tattoos as in the Acceptance verse.

Curse and Mystery Theories (Probably Wrong but Having Fun Anyway)

Just procrastinating instead of doing what I'm supposed to be doing....here are some of my thoughts about where the mystery and curse storylines may be going (I recognize I am probably completely wrong).

Where is the Mystery Going?

I think 4x09 is going to kick this story into high gear after its sort of just simmered all season. What we know for sure? They go after the Sin Eater with crossbows! That’s….pretty much the only thing the episode description told us. Thin information here.

However, from the trailer, it looks like we can also assume that Tristan gets shot with an arrow (“You are not going to die tonight!” scene) in 4x09 or maybe 4x10 (the promo photos make it seem like these two episodes will be bleeding together) so these episodes may also be Tristan heavy but not in a romantic way – more in a how he is related to the larger mystery this year

Is he India’s (the most recent corpse) son? I think this is as good a guess as any. And I’ve got a few competing theories that stem from this idea

Theory 1: Tristan is the Latest in a String of Sin Eaters. This theory banks on the idea that there has not been 1 sin eater created in horseshoe bay, but multiple sin eaters – one created every 20 or so years. Tristan is just the most recent/current one. If creating a sin eater requires a human sacrifice, then its possible that each sacrifice (the 8 corpses) were made to create a new sin eater. Like maybe there is a shelf life on the sin eaters. They can only eat so many sins before they die, requiring a new one to be created (and a new sacrifice to do so). Or maybe they just have a roughly 20 year lifespan. Either way… If India was the last corpse/sacrifice, its possible that Tristan is the sin eater “born” from her sacrifice (I’m using “motherhood” in the absolute loosest sense here). For some reason, I don’t like the Tristan as sin eater theory though. Its too easy to make the “other love interest” evil. And I don’t really get why the sin eater would have this alternative human form? Like we’ve seen monster sin-eater and Tristan. But why have these two separate forms?

Theory 2: There have been multiple Sin Eaters – none of whom are Tristan. This theory follows the same logic as above. Where sin-eaters, at some point, die or reach a shelf-life and a new human sacrifice is needed to ensure the creation of a new one. Each of the 8 corpses have served as this sacrifice. India is the most recent sacrifice. Tristan was her human biological son that the Glasses adopted (knowingly or unknowingly).

Theory 3: There has only ever been 1 Sin Eater created in HSB – back in the 1800’s. So why 8 corpses? Maybe the sin-eater can only eat a certain number of sins before it needs a “reset” (human sacrifice) or maybe there are more than 8 corpses and EVERY sin requires a human sacrifice. Perhaps we only know about 8….but there are actually many many more. Nancy said they all “came from the same section of the graveyard” – possible Temperance’s tsunami waters reanimated them, but didn’t reach the other human sacrifices? In this version where every sin requires a sacrifice, I think India was sacrificed by the Glasses or someone else (just some sad depressed lonely girl living on her yacht – no one will miss her, we’ll put her out of her misery). And the Glasses adopted Tristan (knowingly or unknowingly).

So…where does each of these theories take us?

Theory 1: Tristan is the latest in a string of Sin Eaters. And his death by crossbow leaves HSB’s elite without a sin eater. You know what that means? Human sacrifice time and isn’t Nancy just ripe for the picking? The Glasses may even want it to be her because, sin eater or not, they actually cared for Tristan in is human form and blame her for his death (I sort of believe that if Tristan is the sin eater, his human version didn’t know the other version existed. Sort of Jekyll and Hyde style).

Theory 2: There have been multiple Sin Eaters – none of whom are Tristan. While attempting to track and kill the sin eater, the Drew Crew is met with resistance from some of the town sinners– including the Glasses. In the tussle, Tristan is accidentally arrowed, by one of his own parents. Does he die here? Maybe. In some ways, it seems too soon for that. So it’s possible he does die, or maybe he survives, but the Drew Crew uses the opportunity to fake his death. And that’s a sin the Glasses would likely want to forget very quickly. And if the Drew Crew is successful in killing the current sin eater before the Glasses can do so, they’ll need a new sacrifice to create a new one (in the form of Nancy obviously). Which is what I think is happening in the trailer scene with the Glasses.

Theory 3: There has only ever been 1 Sin Eater created in HSB – This is similar to above. Same line of thinking, but if the idea is that each sin requires a human sacrifice, then they’d use Nancy as the sacrifice to forget what they did (or think they did) to Tristan.

Of all of these, I lean most heavily toward Theory 2 because it’s the cleanest. To be clear, I don’t think ALL of this is happening in 4x09. More I think the thread will start in 4x09 and carry over into the remaining episodes of the season.

Where is the Curse going?

I think 4x10 is our magic episode here and it’s really user somanypetals on Twitter who made my brain explode this morning with this idea so credit to her for getting my juices flowing.

4x10: The BALLAD of Lives Forgone

It’s now heavily theorized that Ace is going to get ensnared by a siren’s song (or something like it) – which are ultimately deadly (see: Homer’s The Odyssey).

Ballad = love song or poem and the wordplay ties into a siren song plot

somanypetals theorized (whether she was serious or not) that the only way to break the siren’s spell might be with a true love’s kiss

Good news, his true love is Nancy!

Bad news, kissing Nancy would trigger the curse and does not solve the problem of Ace dying (death by siren or death by love curse).

I think that Ace will be so close to death with the siren, that they’ll have no choice but to trigger the death curse, starting the countdown clock on Ace’s life.

More good news: this means they can kiss, hold hands, bang! Bad news, the emotional gut-punch of Ace’s pending death is going to hover over it.

This is the episode where Ace isn’t in any of the promo images….hmm.
