Encores! slated its first two shows early this year, with the last one in June, so I don't know what that's about. But this was far more enjoyable than Once Upon a Mattress. A complex and off-putting protagonist makes a compelling figure in this dance-heavy concert presentation of the 1992 Broadway musical. The women of this show are all breathtaking with powerhouse voices. Leslie Uggams has one big number and that 80-year-old broad brought the house down all without taking a step. Joaquina Kalukongo was excellent, of course. But my greatest love goes to the Hunnies, Stephanie Pope, Mamie Duncan-Gibbs and Allison M. Williams, the original Hunnies in that 1992 production, back in their roles after 32 years, and more gorgeous than ever. Living proof that 60-something women are sexy, flexible, and bursting with talent.
Verdict: Why I Love the Theatre

Okay so, I think Joy would be extreemely big on PDA. . .
If you're in a relationship with Joy, everyone knows it, and she makes sure they do - and she's very very open about how much she loves you. You're the moon to her sun, the jelly to her jam.
She flaunts you like you're her proudest prize, and she tries to make sure everyday you have a smile and a good day at HQ...
She'd make you cute little gifts anytime she gets freetime, and she'd definitely try to make you laugh, or smile...
She'd ask you to dance with her at random. Even in unfitting moments... She's super giddy, and enthusiastic, and nothing makes her happier than to dance with you.
BUT, I think her dancing wouldn't be slow dancing, it would be goofy or silly, and fast paced. She might accidentally step on your feet mid dancing and then suck in through her teeth and apologize frantically, all while still doing some goofy boogy with her hands.
I feel like she'd be a little bit of a biased partner. If you were in the wrong about something I think she'd still defend you tooth and nail.
Her sweetheart could NEVER do anything wrong!!!
Um, physical affection is unintentionally condescending, as I said in my last Joy post.
Cheek pinches, head pats, hair ruffles, cheek cupping, chin grabbing, big smothering hugs, nose boops, back pats etc. She does alllll of these things to you.
If you two are openly dating in HQ, which if you were dating, it would be open because Joy can't keep a secret to save her life I think - she'd flirt with you in front of everyone.
Her flirting is definitely a feigned attempt to be smug and sly, but she just looks super goofy... You know that fake ass smile she does at Sadness? Yeah. She pulls that type of face a lot when trying to flirt, its kind of cute and funny.
She's the type to do incredibly dramatic eyebrow wiggles when using a pick up line she read from a pun book. She can embarrass you sometimes...
She's actually so corny by the way. You can not not get embarrassed by her. She'll find a way.
She'd randomly joke and slack on the job whenever you two are together at the Panel. I'm talking, making stupid jokes and giggling and sprawling herself across the panel and slapping her knee - Elbowing you and bringing up something stupid funny that happened a few minutes ago, etc.
She's actually super duper giggly around you. She's giggly regardless but it's so much worse around you. When she's with you, anything remotely funny you say, she'll hoot and holler. She finds you absolutely hilarious, even if it doesn't make sense.
She'd let you sleep with her in her bed, and when you need to, she'd bundle herself into a ball and cuddle up to you. I feel like she'd try to fight over who's big spoon though, she definitely wants to be the bigger spoon.
I feel like, even though you two are dating, she'd be more keen to forehead and cheek kisses. And if she really wants to get to you, she'd take your hand and kiss the back of it, along your knuckles. She likes when you fluster, it gives her a little wee bit of a confidence boost.
I think her ideal date would be something vibrant and energetic, like listening to upbeat music, having a little party or sleepover, or being in charge of something exciting at the panel together.
I think if you both were using the panel, she'd hold your hand when you touch the panel sometimes. She just likes doing that, it makes her feel happy to lean on or over you and hold the back of your hand while you click a button.
I feel like she'd... sing in the shower about you.
Or come up with stupid, terribly written songs of the top of her head about you.
She is a corny girlfriend. 💛

Heavy breathing surrounding the room. Sweat dripping from the women's faces. Sounds of synchronized footsteps filled the room.
"Again, Kyma keep up. You're a beat behind everyone else."
The tall female said as she watched her crew members practice for their next crew battle.
"Unnie, can we stop? We've been at it for 2 hours, my legs feel like jelly."
The short, blonde, asked as her legs gave in, and she dramatically fell to the floor.
"Oh yeah, guys I'm sorry. I lost track of time, we'll work on this more tomorrow after filming."
Cheers filled the room as the younger ones went to grab their belongings and head out of the studio.
"Bye, see you guys tomorrow."
"Bye, Unnie"
"Hey, Y/N, you coming or are you going to sleep here tonight?"
The younger female looked up from her phone, not realizing that everyone had left, and it was just her and Bada still in the dance studio.
"Oh shit, I'm coming."
"What's so important that you have your phone basically glue to your fucking face?"
"Oh, nothing."
" Oh, come on, I'm your best friend, tell me."
"Bada, I promise it's nothing"
Bada just shrugged it off, not wanting to pry anymore. Maybe it is very nothing.
"Oh my God, are you fucking serious right now?!?!?!"
"Why didn't you tell us, idiot?"
"We're so happy for you!!!"
"So....have you guys like.....done it yet?"
The girls had so many questions now that you told them about your relationship with Kirsten. You were so happy that they don't look at you in a different light now that you basically came out to them.
"What's going on? What did I miss?"
Bada walked into the studio to see all the girls standing around you like you were some type of exhibit.
"Unnie, Y/N Unnie has a girlfriend!!!!"
Minah said, jumping up and down with excitement.
"Oh, and you'll never guess who it is."
"Wh-"
"Kirsten of Jam Republic."
Bada just stood there with an unrecognizable expression on her face. It's almost like she was shocked, confused, angry, hurt, and jealous.
"Ummm.... well, don't let this fuck up our chance to make it to finals."
Bada said coldly as she took off her backpack and walked over to set up for practice. The girls stood there in complete shock, they never seen Bada this way before. All the girl have told Bada about their relationships and she was always so happy for us so what is the difference now.
"Let's go, girls. We have lots to go over and fix so get in formation."
As practice continued, you caught yourself in your head too much, tripping over yourself and bumping into your members. You tried to get back into your spot in this song and ended up bumping into Bada. You quickly backed up and looked down at the floor, too afraid to look up at Bada. You could feel Bada's eyes burning a hole into the top of your head.
"Sorry."
"Yeah, whatever, just get your shit together, Y/N."
Bada said, shoulder checking you as she walked past to go stop the music. You stumbled back a bit from that shoulder check and that was your last straw.
"What is your fucking problem, Bada Lee?Huh..... What the fuck did I do to you?"
The girls gasped at your lack of honorifics towards the older female and leader. Bada stopped dead in her tracks and turned towards that younger female.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me, Bada Lee. What. Is. Your. Fucking. Problem?"
Bada smirked, tilting her head letting out a light chuckle, as the short girl stepped towards her with every word she said. You looked up at her with your head tilted as well, waiting for her answer.
"What is it, Bada Lee? Do you not want me to be happy?"
"No, of course, I want you to be happy so don't even go there."
"So, what is it? Why are you so pissed off? Tell me, Bada Lee."
"Because...."
Bada hesitates a little, looking over at Tatter for reassurance. Tatter nodded towards her with a light yet warm smile.
"Because.....what, Bada. Just say it."
" Because I love you, Y/N!! So so so much!! More than just friends like I want to be with you."
"W-What???

─୨MISS PEACHES '57୧─

The horse trotted to the rhythm of the drums, the festival rumbled in the middle of the dusty nothingness, and the lights illuminated the stadium that seemed to be swallowed by the darkness of the warm night. The moon was hidden by the black clouds that threatened to break, lightning illuminated the mountains in violet, and the smell of a storm was approaching.
Jungkook encouraged the animal to go faster, clicking loudly. Jimin was behind him, with one arm he held onto the younger man's chest, and with the other, he took a long drink of the stolen whiskey.
The night called for things to fall into their hands, the purpose being to create a scandal and wake up that city girl who comes to Rivermouth thinking that she can devour them.
The apple of the Bell Ranch's eye, the star child, the one who left Rivermouth at nine to bring home a crown every couple of months.
The apple of Rivermouth's eye is back, wearing the brightest crown she's ever had. And the Hillside brothers plan to enjoy the show tonight.
With a spontaneous brake, both boys jumped off the horse, pushing people in the audience. Alcohol immunizing insults and judging looks.
"C'mon, Jimin. Hurry up!"
"Fuck off. I told you to bring something gross, ain't you working on Millie's butcher shop?" Jimin opened the lid. 
"Ain't your dad a fucking shepherd?" Jungkook spat, tongue heavy with only a few sips.
"What should I bring? Wool? You fucking idiot." The blonde laughed, grabbing the last drink ready on his strap.
The crowd started getting busier, the lights fading. 
The music started out of nowhere like the first trumpet of the apocalypse, announcing your arrival on stage.
And indeed, there was no prettier girl in all of Rivermouth.
With your pearly smile, high voluminous hair, perfect hands, and the sweetest smile Jimin had ever seen. Not even his mother looked so beautiful, nor did the statue of the Virgin Mary in the church. You were divine, a torment, taken from the same city hell.
"Take more." He heard himself say. Jungkook put his hand into the jelly jar that Jimin was carrying in his trembling hands.
Park's rebellious heart fell into his stomach as he saw you emerge completely from the curtains, materializing from the yellow dust that rose from the arid floor like a Las Vegas show. With smoke and lights and the Bell Ranch's girl dressed as a coquettish sailor. The lights are brighter than before, the sparkling shine of your glitter bow, your freshly painted nails, the sash around your body: MISS PEACHES 1957. Everyone applauded when they saw your hands rise and jump elegantly across the creaky floor.
Jungkook held the slimy mass in his fingers, gaping and wondering.
"Are you sure that's the right girl, Park?" 
"Sure as hell." Jimin licked his lips, feeling a sudden thirst. 
Thunder exploded in his ears just as your smile caught a glimpse of him. Like a sign from the Lord of your arrival, he was sure as hell that you were the right girl. "Why, are you scared, little church boy?" Teased, Jungkook clicked his tongue. 
Was that what girls were like outside of Rivermouth? With long legs and an apotheotic smile?
"Aim..." Jungkook murmured coming out of his stupor, raising his arm, the reddish juice dripping down his wrist and onto his shirt.
It's not that Park felt hungry or wanted to go to the bathroom, nor that he has a fever. He wasn't nervous either, of course not, the alcohol helped him with that. But the southern heat was so strong from your presence that he felt like he could faint if he blinked and missed one of your steps, steps, steps, turn, one, two, one, two, three, four, CLACK! LIGHT! THUNDER!
Jelly spilled from Jimin's fingers, and his heart drummed to the sound of your patent leather shoes.
If he had known that the Bell Ranch girl was going to be you, maybe he wouldn't have stolen his mother's jam, maybe he wouldn't have called Jungkook that night. But it was already late, and his fingers were tickling, his nose was beginning to despise the smell of strawberries that filled his space.
"FIRE!" Jimin yelled as the clack of your feet made his throat burst.
The sweet rained down until it reached your beautiful face, your delicate costume. 
A collective gasp landed Jimin on his feet, at what he had caused. Your smile was gone, your long eyelashes raised above the red. Both boys remained static, confused; as if they had desecrated a religious image.
"Oh, fuck. Fuck! We have to go." Jungkook mumbled hands into fists, eyes on the prize. 
Jimin's eyes were bright, the corners of his lips tremblingly raised as he watched you cry in the center of the stage, the unbearable white lights made your translucent tears shine, and the sweaty makeup made you look like a ruined wax figure. The women who surrounded you to protect you from so much shame. Oh, it was a sight.
If your father wasn't screaming, if Jungkook hadn't grabbed his arm, and if his mother hadn't screamed his name from afar. Jimin would have stayed until his feet swelled just to see you, to admire you until he grew weary.
It wasn't the first time he had made a girl cry, but making Miss Peaches '57 cry had been the greatest achievement for 18-year-old Jimin. Best of all, he didn't even have to move, yell at you, or even pull one of your perfect curls.
The mere fact that he came close to you caused tornado damage to such a wildflower.
They had to run through the blue night, ride through the cold drizzle, and disappear for hours until the festival and you were an intelligible echo behind their cruel, childish laughter.
Jungkook licked his sticky fingers while he looked back. Looking for your silhouette coming down the stairs, defeated in the worst way for a girl: when she thinks she looks her best.
That night, both boys slept in the hayfield of an old cabin, drunk and sticky. They both dreamed of the same girl, and both woke up with goosebumps from the dew of a wet morning and a mischievous smile.
One of them dreamed of stealing a kiss from you, the other of making you cry again.

MLP Redesigns/Rewrite Pt 3: Pinkie Pie

Pinkie Pie’s real name is Pink Granite, but she grew to prefer the nickname. Rock Ponies are similar to Mennonites in that they are somewhat closed off from the rest of Equestria, while still being open to new technology and respecting ponies with differing beliefs. They do not in fact eat the rocks.
Diamond Dogs live in mountains and hills that are rocky. There are two main hostile groups that trade with each other: those in the gem-mining territory that need slaves, and those in Rock pony territory who hunt for new slaves to sell. They have no interest in regular rock and minerals, just kidnapping the ponies in exchange for gems.
This has been a terrible problem for Rock ponies for a few generations, so they’ve been very stringent about coat color and hair color. Rock Ponies try to keep dull colors in the gene pool for the camouflage; Diamond Dogs are bad at seeing dull colors, hypersensitive to bright colors, and use their dog pheromones to locate each other.
Pinkie’s parents were advised to send her to one of the regular pony villages when she was a filly. It was common practice to send brightly colored Rock Ponies to the safe areas of Equestria where Diamond Dogs didn’t dare hunt new victims. The mountains and hills were on the edge of Celestia’s jurisdiction and Diamond Dogs could easily chock up disappearances to Rock Ponies getting lost or injured in the dangerous mines.
Pinkie’s parents didn’t want to separate her from her siblings or them, so they tried to keep her at the farm. Other families kept their foals from playing with her because her red hair was essentially a beacon for slavers, and anyone too close would get snatched too.
Eventually the slavers did find Pinkie and snatch her when she veered a bit too far away from her Mom’s line of sight. They had her in chains that were a bit too big, but very very heavy for a foal, so she didn’t think she could slip out.

They hadn’t gotten very far when Rainbow Dash’s first sonic rainboom went off, temporarily blinding the dogs with the colors they were so sensitive to. This was also when Pinkie discovered that laughing and getting energized was a great way to get your heart pumping and slip out of heavy bonds.
She managed to get back home without getting recaptured, and her parents decided to send her to Ponyville to apprentice at the bakery.
The good news was that Pinkie didn’t see color as a curse; it literally saved her from a life of servitude. She didn’t resent the Cakes or other ponies that lived in safety and without the need to worry about color. Pinkie instead kept headfirst into learning the history and culture of Equestria, and tasting every colorful crop that was too risky to grow back on the farm.
She sent jams, jellies, preserves and pickles to the farm in dull paper to make it look like rocks. She learned to make pound cake and flavored bread that would last long enough to make the trip.
The bad news was that nearly getting kidnapped and enslaved left Pinkie with trauma and a very overactive version of the Rock Pony 6th sense. She hates being alone for very long and usually fills a room with conversation or music because silence unsettles her.
She had a panic attack when she found out Rarity got kidnapped and was unable to go with the rest of the mane 6 to rescue her.

You can probably imagine that getting her cutie mark snatched by Starlight and locked in the indoctrination shed was a deeply triggering experience, even with the rest of her friends there for moral support. Before she even got off the train her 6th sense was giving her the urge to bolt as far as possible from the cult, before they even knew something was off.
Rainbow Dash took on the role of the hopeful friend and the one trying to lift everyone’s spirits. Pinkie became abnormally quiet and wouldn’t look at or speak to the cult members who came to check on them. She did join Applejack in tearing the indoctrination books and posters to shreds though.
Pinkie hung close to Rainbow Dash when they were left alone by the cult, but usually shrank down in the far corner of the room, ears and tail twitching whenever they appeared. Rainbow, Twilight and Rarity were the ones most effectively communicating with the cult members; Applejack was the most furious and least approachable outside of Fluttershy’s sickness.
Surprisingly, it was not Applejack who spit on Starlight and slammed the door in her face during her one and only empty speech at the indoctrination shed; it was a seething Pinkie Pie. A group of cultists saw Starlight’s benevolent leader mask slip for a minute before she managed to put the act back on.
Pinkie Pie loved color and always felt a little out of place with her dull, granite colored pelt. Her new form was the most colorful out of the group, and gave her more durability and chaotic magic. Pinkie understandably was not cut out for dismantling the Diamond Dog slave empire, which is why Rarity was sent instead.

Pinkie instead became the pony envoy to the Yak kingdom, [which is not characterized the same way as before] and began introducing both ponies and Yaks to each others’ cultures.
In the age of Draqonequus, several powerful species predated the rise of Horse and Pony-kind. The Draqonequus, who were similar to dragon/goat hybrids, the Manticores, the Dragons, and the Goats. Yaks did not have magic, and thus were at a disadvantage compared to other species.
Manticores and Dragons lived in warrior cultures with a disdain for weaker species that lacked magic or strength. Manticores were like Spartans, brutal and harsh on their own kind, much less those seen as weak. Their cruelty bred the perfect conditions for Tirek the Magic-Glutton. Yaks had no magic for the monster to eat, so he left them alone. Dragons were like Vikings if they were stuck navigating warmer areas because of their cold blood. The Yaks were far more endangered by Dragons than Manticores, and took to settling in the coldest parts of the world to avoid them. This did not mean that Manticores other than Tirek left them alone, however.
Manticores used to invade Yak settlements to use them as unwilling training dummies. They made it a tradition for the new child recruits to start their training by attacking the Yaks. The goal was more to overpower them and grow desensitized to attacking another village, but that didn’t mean there weren’t casualties.
By the time Discord became the sole user of the Elements of Harmony, the Yaks had grown very distrustful of strangers and tried desperately to become aggressive enough to drive off the Manticores. It took some time for Discord’s funny and friendly attitude to penetrate the generational fear of outside species.
Once Discord was able to befriend the Yaks, he decided to help them enchant their borders to block any Manticores from stepping foot in their land.
But as the world shifted and Horses and Ponies became more and more prominent, Discord grew to resent them and the elements. He sealed the Yak kingdom off from the rest of the world entirely, just to keep the Horses and Ponies from doing anything to outdo the Yaks or outlive them. This seal lasted as long as any of Celestia’s ever did; 1000 years.
This meant that there was a huge language barrier when the seal was undone and new diseases were introduced from the outside world. The Prince and his attendants went to get help, and were sent to Ponyville to talk to Zecora and avoid the city’s larger pool of germs.
It was a very stressful time, being around the strange people that the hero of old was angry with, and knowing that they had magic and flight. Some ponies spoke with too many words [Twilight] some had thick accents [Applejack] and they all spoke too fast. Zecora, while not rhyming every sentence, still had a poetic way of talking with similes and metaphors.
Ponies had wildly different sounding words and sayings that the Yaks had no context for. The Pegasi had different body language from other ponies and that made them the most stressful Ponies to deal with. The journey was terribly long and the people were sick.
But at the bakery, which served the Prince and his men their rations, there was a very funny Pony with no magic and no wings. The ancestors had documented their time with the strange and funny hero that kept the Manticores away. Their culture had grown to see laughter and fun as something sacred, something that would bless their people and keep them safe.
Envoy Pinkie Pie introduced the Yaks to all the different foods she could think of. New songs and new jokes and new pranks. Her chaos magic and durability could protect her if something did attack, but they were mainly for entertainment and surviving the larger Yaks if they got overexcited, fell, or pranked too hard.
Having an earth pony come to teach them about the outside world was less stressful than a being meant to have magic. She didn’t expect them to learn magic or integrate it into their work and infrastructure. She used her hooves for most things and the chaos magic for entertainment rather than anything serious, like Twilight would have.
The Yaks didn’t change much outside of visiting other nations and making more food from across Equestria. They had no need to learn magic or defend themselves, and if that were to change, the immortal Princesses and the Hero of old would be there to help. Thankfully the 1000 years of Discord being a legend established a friendlier attitude before anyone made contact. Although it did make them pretty cunning pranksters.

This rarely staged production directed by Tony winner Victoria Clark (KIMBERLY AKIMBO) is considered by some to be the first concept musical, an inspiration for musical theater favorites such as CABARET, CHICAGO, and COMPANY.

Directed by Saheem Ali (FAT HAM), THE WILD PARTY is a jazz-age tragedy about a gin-soaked party. What happens when a night of debauchery leads to a morning of sobering truths? Michael John LaChiusa (THE GARDENS OF ANUNCIA) and George C. Wolfe (JELLY’S LAST JAM) bring Joseph Moncure March’s notorious narrative poem to life in their “dangerous, seedy, fantastic” (The Observer) musical adaptation.

You can get six popsicle tickets a day during Days of Sunlight. If you’ve grabbed all of them so far, you’ll need ten more days of collecting all six to get all three beach towel capes.
EDIT: I got my stuff mixed up! You’re gonna need all ten days of collecting to get all the beach towel capes! However, as with the last ticket event, you can buy several tickets at the shop with ascended candles if you find yourself short.
You’ll find four floating around, usually very easy to see. There seems to be one always on the first baby jellyfish in the jellyfish parade that floats around. Others appear on a column at the bridge, one in a hole of the hollow tree around Grandma’s table, one near the IAP item seller, one on a ladder above the message center, etc. One sometimes appears on the tall tree with the water slide, which you can grab by flying up.
You get two for participating in activities that appear above these cushions. They’re handy because they disappear when you collect them, which you can use to tell if you’ve done your quests for the day. I usually just jump off one of the three or four high dives, it’s fastest and easiest. You can also play tag with the scout, jam with the musicians, find the baby jellies trapped in the hidden cave.

Additional casting has been announced for the Jelly's Last Jam, the second show in the 2024 Encores season.
The cast features Nicholas Christopher as Jelly Roll Morton, John Clay III as Jack the Bear, Joaquina Kalukango as Anita, Tiffany Mann as Miss Mamie, Billy Porter as the Chimney Man and Leslie Uggams as Gran Mimi. Original cast members Mamie Duncan-Gibbs, Stephanie Pope Lofgren, and Allison M. Williams will reprise their roles as the Hunnies.
Jelly's Last Jam features music from Jelly Roll Morton and Luther Henderson, lyrics by Susan Birkenhead, and a book by George C Wolfe. The Encores production is directed by Robert O'Hara and runs from February 21 to March 3, 2024

Do you know where I could find more info about Dead Outlaw and Yoko’s Husband’s Killer? I have the technological literacy of a grandpa and am struggling lol
Oh, alas, after a cursory google search it looks like they're very elusive online haha. I saw both live in NYC at productions that have since closed. They are fantastic, but maybe too new to have a version available online or anything.
The closest for each: There's a collection of Dead Outlaw songs threaded throughout here and there's some demos of Yoko's Husband's Killer's Japanese Wife, Gloria here, though I know neither are really helpful since you're interested in musical structure specifically. I'd also check out Jelly's Last Jam, which has some fun structure stuff going on.
You can join me in periodically googling whether the Dead Outlaw cast album has come out yet though :') And attending & supporting new productions of both when they crop up, because I'm sure they will!

Also on the subject of bio musicals… jelly’s last jam is honestly the gold standard for me because it acknowledges the impact of his work as a musician while deconstructing the harm he caused as a man. It’s not just “this was his life and music” it uses his life as a framing narrative that facilitates questions of loyalty/betrayal/identity/entitlement/worth. It doesn’t glorify his legacy it examines and engages with it in a way that holds up really well. And maybe I’m just obsessing over it because I recently did a two day training on dialogic interpretation but like. The Chimney Man as a character asks the audience the kind of critical questions that we ask our interpreters at the museum as we actively work on how to better examine our own famous/problematic guy. The kind of role that that character fulfills could so easily have been developed as just a narrator but George C Wolfe made a conscious decision to make it the role of an active interlocutor. Which also ties into the history of minstrelsy and vaudeville. Which is directly tied to the history not only of the period in which the show is set but also the history of black music and dance and theatre in America. It’s so layered and intentional and it’s one of those things where I’m like why did we never talk about THIS in any of my theatre history or critical theatre courses in undergrad. We talked about so many examples of theatre as social commentary or theatre as history or theatre as education and this example was right there and a part of RECENT and ACCESSIBLE theatrical history. But it never once came up.
