Jeremy Fish’s “Drawing Conclusions.”

Currently on view at Harman Projects in New York City is artist Jeremy Fish’s solo exhibition, “Drawing Conclusions.”

Returning to his roots with an exhibition of entirely black and white drawings, Fish draws from a variety of inspirations.

"This is my favorite medium, and this will be my first show made up entirely of these stark high contrast drawings. I began the work in December 2021, and the themes range from the subjects of love, betrayal, Zodiac signs, hands and feet, hearts and skulls, dead rappers, and my beloved cat Mrs. Brown," the artist elaborates.

The human heart, skull and images of Earth are found repeatedly in this body of work, bringing to mind the cycle of birth, reproduction, and death that defines life. These concepts are at the very core of what it means to be alive and therefore what it means to be human. Heartfelt Hat, pictured above, depicts a skull wearing a hat emblazoned with a human heart. The heart, pierced by an arrow, recalls the love imparted by Eros of Greek mythology while also reminding us that love and vulnerability can lead to pain and death.

In each drawing, objects, animals and places meld into each other creating something new yet eerily familiar. These symbolically charged images reflect the artist's life, surroundings and interests. Much as each drawing contains a composition of hybridized subjects, Fish plays with recurring imagery throughout the body of work. The individual pieces, when viewed together as a body of work, show the bigger picture of what it means to be Jeremy Fish.

The Tools of the Trade

"What animal are you most afraid of?" the anthropomorphic mustache behind the wheel of the truck asked, when i at seven failed to produce a single favorite thing, animal or color or food, subjectivity beyond the reach of my uselessly minmaxed skillset.

I am not even afraid of dogs at this age, because this mustache heard my fear about the movie Kujo and taught me what to do when an animal is rabid (and how to do it: res dogs bites didn't yoosta be so cute).

After some deliberation over whether or not I wanted to be named after the football fish from the Discovery Channel program, "Mom said I should have been scared of the owl."

"Owls?" Roy asked behind his tobacco pipe, eagle feather shivering in the band of his ranching hat.

"The owl that got in the car," Sister answers beside me in the same seatbelt, unashamed of her extremely average grade-point. "Mawm's station wagon was open both windows to get the skunk smell out of the heater vents," she explains plainly, though compared to her fellow fourth-graders she is as articulate as a presidential candidate. and twice as violently opposed.

"I wasn't scared," I laughed, remembering the brush of silent wingtips past my face, the station wagon's quietude parked in the driveway while mara finished her cigarette, the ultimate loss of my mother's mouseback coin-purse because that was the third time some fucking cat or turkey went after that keychain, goddammit! cussing screaming laughing et c, once mara chucked the owl out of the car.

"I'm scared of dogs," Sister confessed easily, having seen a rich white auntie's down-syndrome labrador bloody my nose and knock a tooth free with her playful assault. Sister was also scared of loud noises, and only Roy's dogs had been trained to silence themselves politely should their borking do a beloved toddler a startlement.

"Dogs didn't always yoosta be dogs," Roy explains with a wince, well-read on farm animal eugenics. "You I think could be a wolf, which usually means you will struggle with duality --"

I tune out the drone of most of Roy's storytelling. He's always trying to define reality, like most parents, instead of asking us how reality has yet to present itself.

Sister is also a scorpio, poor bitch. I don't recall her birth year. I forget her more every day.

I wasn't scared of the owl, though. I wasn't scared of anything, for fear is the mind-killer, because Roy often fell asleep with us on the couch pull-out bed, watching all the Star Wars movies on betamax.

I was too young and too autistic and too intelligent to have ever survived poverty as long as I have. This blog is a loveletter to fandoms, an appreciation of politics, and a condemnation of cults.

there's so many things in tsc that just come at you all at once, so it's hard to focus on just one thing to break down, but the most glaring thing that stood out to me is how hard it is to really put someone back together. especially someone so shattered that it's nigh impossible to glue them back and pray they don't crumble under your ministrations.

if jean is neil's foil, then jeremy is andrew's direct antithesis. whereas andrew is a steady bedrock because he's been broken too many times to know how to weather the storm, jeremy is too soft hands and an even softer soul. he cares and cares and cares. so empathetic and so gentle it almost breaks your heart. you pray for the impossibility that jeremy can survive knowing the truth because if he doesn't, then what hope does jean have? so you pray he can be steady too. that he can weather the storm as well. that he will not break when knowing that just under the surface lies shark-infested waters.

but then you remember the beginning. "even knowing everything could go completely sideways, you'd make that choice every time"

in every other universe, jean has not survived. but in every other universe, he did not have the trojans.
