As another fabulous three weeks of counting in a vitally important citizen science project approaches its end, I have been reflecting on the many Big Butterfly Counts I have done over the past few weeks. Below are some of the key species I saw with a few comments.
Red Admiral
Where else could I start? This long time favourite butterfly of mine has grabbed the headlines and taken the count by storm with the sheer numbers of them around. It has been fascinating to see the unusually high numbers at this time of year for me, with it being more notable if it was a day I didn't see one than did in the butterfly count a species I might usually see in two or three of my Big Butterfly Counts in a year. Personally it has made me so happy to see so many and really struck to the core of how I fell in love with this charismatic species with some glorious times watching them, key moments in an amazing butterfly year I've had generally. I took the first two pictures in this photoset of Red Admirals at one of the most memorable counts I did this year at Egleton, Rutland Water at the start and on a recent evening at Lakeside Country Park. It also personifies the importance of the count with the indicator of climate change these numbers are with more now overwintering here. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-66395590
Summer stalwarts: Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper
I have just for fun actually just created two leaderboards out of all my counts this year so far, one overall and one for Lakeside Country Park where I did the most counts. Unsurprisingly Meadow Brown topped both with Gatekeeper third behind Small White overall and second at Lakeside. Where I saw less of their fellow key summer species Marbled White and Ringlet compared to previous years which in the ever shifting seasons perhaps emerged too early and their shorter seasons were waning and ceased here during the count, this pair have been ever present again with me seeing some very high numbers of them on counts. The usual passing of the baton I see where I go from seeing mostly Meadow Browns to mostly Gatekeepers on counts towards the end of it didn't really happen this year as both were high throughout, perhaps due to the Gatekeeper's notable early emergence this year too. I have felt really connected to these colourful butterflies during the three weeks and the Big Butterfly Count wouldn't be the same without them. It's been my best Big Butterfly Count for getting photos of the species included I think and I took the third and fourth in this set of Gatekeeper and fifth of Meadow Brown all at Lakeside.
The white butterflies: Small, Large and Green-veined
The white butterflies in the count have been ever present in my contributions also, with Small White like in 2021 for me really challenging the Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper for the top spots with so many seen. The elegant and alluring Green-veined White was one I notably saw more of in the count this year and I very much enjoyed doing so, taking the sixth and seventh pictures in this photoset of some at Lakeside. Large White is something I see less than I might think generally and I enjoyed some sightings of them during the count.
Speckled Wood
A surprise package this year for me, I have been very happy to observe a fair few of these intricately marked and joyful butterflies during the count this year, another that was more present for me than usual. I took the eighth picture in this photoset of one at Lakeside during the count.
Six-spot Burnet
Onto day flying moths included in the count now and before the count arrived I felt as though I was seeing more of this gorgeous moth the species that first got me into moths back in 2010 this year, but that's something easy to say whilst in the grip of their season. But whilst their season waned during it Big Butterfly Count proved that a bit for me with a high amount seen especially at Lakeside. It was a pleasure to see these dashing moths many times, I took the ninth picture in this photoset of one at Lakeside.
Jersey Tiger moth
Finally it's a quality over quantity moment as on Monday I was over the moon to spot the superb Jersey Tiger moth in the tenth picture in this photoset at Lakeside. It was only the second time I've ever seen this species and first during the Big Butterfly Count days. It was an amazing moment in my moth year getting a great view of it. But there is a notable point for quantity too as amazingly only days into the count I'd seen all of the Big Butterfly Count species in one of my counts apart from a Jersey Tiger. It was improbable I'd spot one given I'd only seen one before, but I did and for the first time ever it means I've every species at least once during my run of doing counts which feels nice.
I would do a highly commended list but fear I would end up saying all of the other species so thought I would say I was so happy to see every species and a few more for quality and quantity really made an impression on me this year. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed contributing to this amazing project again and sharing what I saw.
Jersey Tiger moth, or Spanish Flag, somewhere on a wall in France.
Fact from Wildlife trusts: The jersey tiger moth can be found in gardens and by the coast, for instance near beaches and coastal cliffs. The caterpillars feed mainly on ground ivy, white dead-nettle, branmble and common nettle. These moths fly in both day and night.

In order: a giant house spider, a Jersey tiger moth, a dusky thorn, and I assume the 4th and 5th photos are the same butterfly? Looks like a speckled wood but maybe one of the subspecies :)
Good morning, pls enjoy this jersey tiger moth and all its fancy wings. May we always have moths like this in the world 🦋💖
This species feeds on many common herbaceous plants that some ppl call weeds. That includes brambles, plantains, and nettles (which feed so many different moths/butterflies/beetles/etc etc. Always worth keeping some nettles!)
Bugs; perpetually the best reason not to overdo it with the weeding.

For the Timemoths au, what moths each Doctor would resemble. I'll reblog this post with the rest bc of the image limit.
Btw, this isn't like set in stone for the au. If you want to make content for the au you don't have to follow this list, this is just my own silly little list!
10 key moments/themes of my wildlife watching and photos over the last week
Mistle Thrushes at Whitefield Moor in the New Forest
On a lovely walk there last Sunday it was nice to see a fair few of this charming bird.
A view over the type of area they were on the walk.
Jersey Tiger moth at Lakeside
Stunning moments Monday lunch time and evening at the entrance to Lakeside where I was entranced by a prominent and beautiful Jersey Tiger moth on a leaf. One of my best moth moments of the year.

Watching a patch of fleabane full of Gatekeepers and turning round to find a Wasp Spider in the grass at Lakeside
On Tuesday the wealth of Gatekeepers and other butterflies observed on my lunch time walk was a great way to start to sign off in the last week of the Big Butterfly Count in a week I saw pleasingly loads and a variety of butterflies following one of my big butterfly days of the year last Saturday, and the Wasp Spider was one of the most exciting wild moments of my year and one I had hoped for over the last couple of years.

Seeing Pied and Spotted Flycatcher at Millyford Bridge in the New Forest
A pivotal moment in my birdwatching year yesterday, being stunned to see not only the charming Spotted Flycatchers but my first gorgeous Pied Flycatcher of the year, a stunning bird. Blissful time spent in the forest.

Hornet mimic hoverflies at Winnall Moors and Lakeside
Another insect I had hoped to see, I always seem to see something special when I'm drawn to Winnall Moors on an office working day lunch break and this was it on Thursday. Then I enjoyed seeing this prepossessing hoverfly again at Lakeside on Friday evening.

Common Terns at Lakeside
On both Monday and Friday I was overjoyed to observe this infrequent Lakeside visitor, alongside the ever present Lesser Black-backed Gull chick and adults around here of late bringing a slice of the coast to the country park with their evocative shriek and it was a delight to watch these acrobats circle in the air and dive to fish. A real treat.

Cormorant among the Great Crested Grebes at Lakeside
Also on Tuesday adding to what was really a crazy working week for unexpected sightings on Lakeside walks was another infrequent visitor to Lakeside especially in summer months, a pretty Cormorant. It was so nice to see it and quite surreal seeing it swim alongside the young Great Crested Grebes, I enjoyed intimate moments with them this week.

A taste of late summer into autumn
It was a nice week of contrast particularly in my plant and fungi year with one of the last flowers I'll see in bloom perhaps this year locally chicory which I liked seeing on Monday, contrasting fruit increasing with guelder rose berries, blackberries, my first hawthorn berries of the year and approaching rose hips locally. Albeit helped by the wet weather, at home and at Millyford Bridge in the New Forest yesterday a big presence of mushrooms threw me forward to autumnal times. And on the two New Forest walks it was great to observe different types of heather coming out as the landscape just puts an arm inside its late summer jacket of purple.

Dragonflies at Lakeside: Seeing my first Migrant Hawker of the year and a beautiful female Common Darter
There is still much to see in my dragonfly year and also on Monday's packed lunch time walk I got my first glimpse of a Migrant Hawker this year. Another key Lakeside species gave me a strong and precious moment on Friday's evening walk with an enchanting Common Darter seen flying and landed on dock.
A variety of wildlife enjoyed at home
Finally from seeing and hearing Lesser Black-backed Gulls and Greylag Geese from home to seeing young Goldfinches a lot and a young House Sparrow being fed on the balcony feeders I've had a great week of birds at home. A Blue Tit seen a few times, lots of Starlings and an exciting moment seeing a male Sparrowhawk on next door's gate this morning were other lovely moments. As was seeing some Small White butterflies out the front, spiders, a snail out the front and Udea fulvalis and plume moths.
no love for ned is back on wlur tonight from 8pm until midnight. i took last week off to catch a couple of my favorites bands from the nineties live in dc- velocity girl and tuscadero!
speaking of the nineties, two weeks ago i did a best of 1993 show that's now on mixcloud. as always i played a couple songs that turned out to be a year off due to the damn copyright dates listed on the cd. i know the sdre was actually 1994 and the portastatic might be too! we'll still be doing a 'best of 2003' show in a couple weeks!
