For what it’s worth, Luke doesn’t hate Christmas.

Okay, yes, the commercialism sends him into a tailspin, but he’s hardly alone there, right? And light pollution is bad enough for migratory birds without the Griswolds of the world throwing up 500 strands of blinking fairy lights. And he does hate about 99% of all Christmas music and he doesn’t care if he is alone in that respect – why is a wife-beating son-of-a-bitch like Bing Crosby considered a Christmas staple?! 

But that doesn’t mean he hates Christmas.

He does like the quiet parts of Christmas, what little of them remain. Although not religious, he can appreciate a Christmas hymn – his earliest Christmas memory is dozing on his dad’s shoulder in front of their Christmas tree, his mother’s sweet, rusty voice humming O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. And he’s not such a Grinch that he doesn’t appreciate a little kid’s joy on Christmas morning: he still remembers Lizzie’s unparalleled delight upon opening up her Lite-Brite the year she turned five.

His stomach curdles when he thinks about his sister. This is the longest they’ve ever intentionally gone without speaking – unintentionally, well, that’s always been more frequent. He lost track of her for the entirety of 1982 and most of 1985. Not that there’s much Liz probably has to say to Luke that she hasn’t screamed at him on the phone since the horrible day that Child Protective Services took Jess.

 Jess. The curdled stomach comes back with a vengeance. He reaches automatically for the bottle of Tums that he’s taken to keeping in his back pocket, shakes three out into his palm. He wonders for the ten thousandth time how his nephew is, whether he’s scared, whether the gifts Luke sent for Christmas made it to the foster home – Deirdre, the foster mom, is perfectly nice but does not believe in returning phone calls.

Okay, so this year, maybe he does hate Christmas.

Lenny snorts and swats at him with his newspaper as the teenager walks by. "Smart-ass little punk."

sometimes i’m glad jess got the hell out of stars hollow cause otherwise, i imagine he’d end up a lot like dean, juggling multiple jobs and struggling to make time for rory. i just wish they’d had a smoother break than whatever implosion they contrived to send jess to california. i mean, rory was headed to europe for the summer anyway. jess could’ve gone to california for the summer, worked things out with his dad, and then moved to new york which is closer to yale than stars hollow anyway. whatever. i’m just torturing myself at this point.

I know we've all experienced the "I want someone to write the fanfic I want to read and I don't want it to be me" phenomenon, but it feels extra pathetic when it's a fic from your VERY SPECIFIC AU/canon.

Not to make absolutely everything about fandom but speaking of Oscar movies and academia aesthetics I've been thinking of a The Holdovers AU in the Gilmore Girls-verse, with Jess as Angus, the kid that gets stuck at the boarding school over Christmas, but I can't figure out who should be Paul Giamatti Hunham.

My first instinct is Luke because they have the tightest bond in the show and a lot of the conversations between the leads feel like they would hit home with Luke and Jess respectively and together. Also Luke as the teacher would make it easier to sneak in Lorelai as the cute woman with cookies with a conveniently aged teenage relative (niece in the movie, daughter for Lorelai) who hits it off with Angus. But for Luke to work you'd either have to make a pre-established familial relationship that changes the movie-relationship between the leads or you'd have to make an AU where Jess and Luke aren't related.

Second instinct is Max Medina because you get past the family ties-issue and can still sneak Lorelai and Rory in the exact same way. But the thing is that Max is canonically a really nice and really different teacher from Paul Hunham so you'd either completely change the dynamic between the two and lose the point of the AU or you'd have to make Max Medina really OOC.

You could try to push in other teacher characters for Paul Hunham, but none of them have enough characteristics or staying power to work, or they're Asher Fleming... and I don't think anyone wants Asher Fleming as Paul Hunham.

Then I got a thought that I have no idea how to deal with so now you have to as well: Taylor Doose as Paul Hunham. No he's not a teacher and yes I usually am a big fan of trashing on Taylor (personality, as a character he's brilliant). But. It actually makes sense. Him and Jess never get along, Taylor's incredibly difficult to work with and refuses to do things any other way than his own but he also really loves and cares about what he does and believes in his work as something that helps and uplifts the community of Stars Hollow (not unlike how Paul Hunham genuinely wants to prepare and educate the next generations of students). And if someone made it work it would actually be a little ingenious to see an AU where Taylor and Jess actually find common ground and help each other. The Lorelai swap in could be weird but you could also just remove the romantic tone between them and focus on Paul-Taylor's social isolation.

But I still have no idea who to put in as the Mary Lamb stand-in, like how could anyone in Gilmore Girls fit her character-arc??
