When Clara Immerwahr (photo, left) decided she wanted to get a degree in chemistry, she had a tough road ahead.
In 1890s Prussia, a woman studying for an advanced degree simply was not done, so she started by asking each individual professor if she could sit in on his class as a guest. When that worked, she asked for permission to take the exams, which also was granted.
Her plan worked so well that, in 1900, the University of Breslau graduated her magna cum laude with a PhD in Chemistry.
The following year she married another scientist, Fritz Haber (photo, right), and was forced to walk away from her research, although she quietly contributed to his, and lived in his growing shadow.
When the First World War broke out in 1914, Fritz became an army officer and went to work for the German military developing chemical weapons in hopes that they would shorten the war. This logic disgusted Clara, who was a pacifist, and she spoke out vehemently against her husband's work.
In early 1915, with Fritz supervising, the German Army began unleashing deadly chlorine gas attacks on the French, British, and Canadian trenches (they soon reciprocated). The effects were stunning, and Clara was horrified.
While Fritz was home on leave a few days later, Clara took his service pistol from its holster, put it to her chest, and took her own life.
Fritz was devastated, but had orders to return to the front, and so could not stay home long. He threw himself into his work to hide his grief, but many thought he was acting callously about his young wife's suicide.
After Germany's defeat, Fritz went back to his research developing chemicals to help with agriculture. Before the war he had developed a chemical fertilizer that helped feed millions of people, for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1918.
Now he focused on chemical pesticides, and in the 1920s helped develop a "safer" version of a banned hydrogen-cyanide-based pesticide, that was marketed under the name Zyklon B.
In 1933, Fritz Haber's position was terminated due to his Jewish heritage (Clara also was Jewish, but both had converted to Christianity, most likely due to social stigma), and he died in exile the following year, only a few years before the Nazis would use his innovation against his own people.

I hate how ppl interpret Jack and Holster's relationship. They are friends and they're also both absolutely bitches to each other because they know how to push each other's buttons and they have poor restraint bc its turned into a competition (and they're both ridiculously competitive). Holster is Jack's type except he's obnoxious on purpose bc its funny. Jack is Holster's type but that doesn't matter bc Jack chirps him too much. Holster likes to think he has a thick skin, but Jack proves him wrong and he hates it. He'd do almost anything for Jack, but that's also true of all his friends (with the exception of Ransom, for whom its not an almost). He and Ransom canonically filmed Jack's ass without permission, and Jack was probably like "what is wrong with you two" and left it at that. R&H are connoisseurs of Jack x Parse fanfic, likely unaware that there was anything to that relationship for real. Jack will never let Holster live down whatever happened with Esther, but only bc Holster has moved on in every way except for this chirping. Holster can never tell if Jack is affected by his chirps bc Holster is awful at reading expressions and Jack doesn't emote as obviously as other people do. They hooked up once but both of them have forgotten abt it somehow. Holster is aware that he's Jack's type, but it doesn't matter bc they aren't friends (even though they are). Jack has never flirted with Holster on purpose and Holster would never flirt with Jack directly bc its easier to talk about his ass to other people than to admit he cares about Jack. He sometimes dreams about dating Jack and wakes up irrationally angry at him. Jack sometimes dreams about Holster but it's always competitive. One time he had a dream where they were contestants on Jeopardy, but he woke up before finding out who won and spent the whole morning smugly proud of his history knowledge and annoyed at Holster's pop culture knowledge. Jack would probably have hooked up with Holster for the first time again if he'd asked, but Holster is proud of himself for never having tried to hook up, even if he sometimes thinks about how he probably wouldn't know how Jack's body fits against his, or the texture of jack's skin, or how long Jack lasts. He dismisses these thoughts because he would remember sleeping with Jack, right? How could someone forget that? Holster once told Jack that if they were trapped in a timeloop, Jack could rely on him. Jack has no idea what the hell that means. Ransom is the only person who knows about the JackHoltz hookup. Shitty probably thought it happened more than once, but is completely wrong about when it would have been. Jack and Holster originally thought theyd bond over being jewish, but Jack speaks hebrew in a quebecois accent and Holster can't stand it. Alicia Zimmermann sometimes asks Jack about the "nice jewish boy on the team" and Jack hasn't put together that she means Holster. Holster is a better singer than Bitty but his taste in music is a lot of showtunes, and Jack doesn't understand. Jack once punched Holster in the nose by accident and Holster was low-key turned on by it. Jack didn't learn most of his teammates' first names until a couple months into his sophomore year, but Holster is the only one who knows. Holster thinks Jack should dress a little more slutty, but he's only told this to Bitty (who agreed wholeheartedly). Ever since Jack proposed to Bitty, Holster exclusively calls him Mr. Bitty bc he knows how much Jack loves tying his identity to the man he loves

(JTA) — Two weeks ahead of an Israeli election in which he is campaigning to allow security forces to shoot stone-throwers, Itamar Ben-Gvir, the leader of the extremist Otzma Yehudit party, drew his pistol during a confrontation in eastern Jerusalem.
The incident took place after several days of clashes in Jerusalem sparked by the killing of an Israeli soldier in a suburb last weekend. The tensions were intense enough that the city’s mayor took to the airwaves to deny that the city was “burning.”
Late Thursday, Ben-Gvir posted on Twitter a video of stone-throwing in Sheikh Jarrah, a Palestinian neighborhood where Jewish groups have claimed buildings that were in Jewish hands before 1948, and where tensions have seethed in recent years.
“To see it is to not believe it — an Arab terrorist throws stones at Jews, right in front of police,” he wrote. “Instead of shooting or arresting him, the policeman is content to push him back. It’s time we allowed police to crush the enemy, I’m on my way to the area now to protect Jewish residents. Enough with the capitulation.”
Ben-Gvir, who in polls is shown as expanding his party’s single seat in the Knesset to nine or 10, is campaigning on a platform that includes loosening open-fire rules to include stone-throwers as legitimate targets. Soon he was at the site, with media following and recording him.
Ben-Gvir stood in an open area, where he was vulnerable to stone-throwing, and police ushered him behind a truck, out of sight of the stone-throwers. He drew his pistol, waved it for about 30 seconds, and then replaced it in his holster. Throughout, he repeated multiple times, “If they throw stones, you shoot them!”
The incident is an example of why political opponents and liberal pundits commonly accuse Ben-Gvir of being a “pyromaniac” roaming Israel’s combustible friction points with a metaphoric oil can in hand. He made his appearance during the second night of clashes in Sheikh Jarrah.
The tensions follow the killing of a soldier, Noa Lazar, 18, who was shot at a checkpoint in Shuafat, a refugee camp in Jerusalem’s northern area. Israeli raids on the camp in a search for the shooter, as well as restrictions on residents aimed at preventing his escape, have sparked tensions and on Wednesday, they spread to Sheikh Jarrah.
Palestinian merchants held a citywide strike on Wednesday, and Palestinian organizers declared Friday to be a “day of rage.”
Police arrested 18 people, Jews and Palestinians, for alleged stone-throwing in Sheikh Jarrah.
Moshe Lion, the city’s mayor, told Israel Army Radio that the violence was the work of a small minority, and said the city was functioning and that Jewish residents were enjoying the Sukkot holiday unimpeded.
“The residents of East Jerusalem are an inseparable part of this city,” Lion said in remarks reported by the Times of Israel. “Yes, it’s true that there is a minority that occasionally raises the temperature. I am not here to convince people that there isn’t violence in specific sections, but to say that Jerusalem is burning? Absolutely not.”
It was not the first time that Ben-Gvir had drawn his gun in public. Last December, he brandished his gun at Arab parking lot attendants in a dispute over a parking spot.

Angeliana’s Imagination Chapter 3 (Final)
I'm back! So, I left off on another cliffhanger, that will be resolved in this chapter! So, in the last chapter, the Nazis got me! Do you want to hear how I escaped? Well then, read on!
As Hitler put me into the car, I was TERRIFIED! A million horrible thoughts ran through my mind. Hitler was driving, and he looked back at me, who was sitting in between two Nazis. "I'll finally have ultimate control!" He said. I knew what that meant! If he killed me and took my powers, a lot of people would die. I knew I had to escape, but how? We drove in the night until Hitler stopped the car in front of a spooky, gothic mansion. He opened the car door for the other Nazis, who pulled me out. We went through the front door, and they locked it. Hitler stood in front of me and signaled for the other Nazis to hold me. I struggled because I didn't want to die! Hitler got his Luger pistol from its holster. He aimed it at me, ready to end my life and take my soul. Just as he was about to fire, I broke free of the two Nazis, punched one in the face, and stomped on the other one's boot. Hitler began to fire his gun at me, trying to kill me. I ran because if Hitler killed me, he would take my soul.
I ran, knowing I had to find a way other than the Nazi-surrounded front door. I had to go deeper into the mansion, to find another door. I tried to lose the six of them. Hitler was furious! "DON'T LET THAT JEWISH BRAT ESCAPE!" He screamed while signaling for every Nazi in the building to seize me. I ran down the dark hallway until I ran into an even more sinister figure...
Oh, god no... I thought. It was that horrible Heinrich Himmler, another Nazi I learned about in class! I had stayed in class just long enough to hear about him, also. He was another horrible Nazi! He even believed in dark magic, along with that!
I stood still and faced Himmler down I pulled out my sword, and I got ready to use it. Himmler walked further towards me. "You really hope to defeat the strongest dark magic user in the Reich with that toothpick?" He laughed.
But, I meant business. I swung my sword around, while also dodging Heinrich's lethal blasts of magic. I landed a blow on Himmler's shoulder.
"GAHHH!" He screamed, clutching his wound. The sword has burnt him, because it has the power of pure light, while he was using pure darkness. He was really angry now! Himmler chased me through the mansion, along with Hitler! Soon, I was cornered, again! Hitler aimed his Luger at me. Just as he pulled the trigger, Hitler was kicked square in the face by someone. The bullet literally SINGED MY HAIR on top of my head. That was too close...
After Hitler got his composure back, the mystery savior showed himself! It was Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain! He was wearing armor, similar to the armor worn by knights in old England. He was carrying a sword on his belt.
"Adolf. My old foe. I never dreamed we would be crossing paths again, especially under circumstances such as these, but here we are, I guess!" Winston said. He and Hitler were circling each other.
"How do you think a fat oaf like you could stop me as I am now?" Hitler asked.
"I don't know! Let's find out, shall we?" Churchill unsheathed his sword. Hitler used his dark magic to conjure a sword of his own, and the two clashed.
Hitler was tough, but Churchill wouldn't give up. It was just like in real life, during the war. Churchill never surrendered. Churchill tried to run Hitler through with his sword, but Hitler disappeared at the last second and appeared behind Churchill, whose sword got stuck in the wall, instead. Hitler tried to strike Churchill from behind with his powers, but they reflected off of his armor!
The magic headed back towards Hitler, but he caught it back in his hand, unlike my fight with him. Hitler tried to strike again, but Churshill slashed him with his sword. Hitler stumbled backward.
"You put up a good fight, but you won't be able to protect Angeliana's soul or this universe!" Hitler said. (Heinrich, weaken her with your powers but don't kill her. While you do that, I'll try to defeat Churchill. When I'm done, I'll kill her and take her soul!)
At the time, I didn't know what he said, but I've added translations for the book. While Hitler distracted Churchill, Himmler stalked towards me, lighting up his hand with black electricity. He electrocuted me, and I fell to the ground in pain. I tried to stand, but the pain was too great! I'd never been tased by a police officer or felt any 'normal' types of electrocution, but I knew at that moment that they probably weren't this painful.
Churchill, however, wasn't stupid. He sensed their plan from a mile away. He tackled Heinrich, and the electricity stopped. I tried to stand but was too injured.
"Lady Angeliana, you mustn't give up!" Churchill said, trying to keep Hitler away.
So, I pressed on. I stood back up, despite the pain. I unleashed a beam of light from my sword, that blasted Hitler. I then turned around and did the same to Himmler. The two of them were out for the count, so Chruchill and I began our escape.
But, it wouldn't be that easy! We were still surrounded by Nazis!

Most modern militaries and law enforcement agencies train to employ their weapons from Condition 1. That is, magazine inserted, round in the chamber and safety engaged. All that is needed to get a round off is to aim, disengage the safety (or safeties), and press the trigger to its break. One country that does not follow this standard is Israel. The practice of carrying in Condition 3, or magazine inserted without a round in the chamber, is also known as "Israeli carry" for its popularity in the Jewish State. Israeli carry is taught as the handgun standard in both the Israel Defense Forces and Israel Police. However, the practice did not originate in Israel.During the age of gunslingers in the Wild West, it was not uncommon for six-shot revolvers to be carried with only five rounds chambered in the cylinder. The revolver would be carried with the hammer down on the empty chamber to prevent sharp knocks or blows to the weapon from causing the hammer to fire a chambered cartridge unintentionally. This practice was even carried into the early 20th century with the advent of autoloading pistols.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id3RvNCLxTwThe 1940 publication of FM 23-35, the War Department's Basic Field Manual for the M1911 pistol, calls for carrying in both Conditions 3 and 1. "In campaign, when early use of the pistol is not foreseen, it should be carried with a fully loaded magazine in the socket, chamber empty, hammer down," it reads. "When early use of the pistol is probable, it should be carried loaded and locked in the holster or hand." Carrying with the magazine inserted, chamber empty, and hammer down is Condition 2.Israeli carry requires the pistol to be chambered before it can be employed (Cherev Gidon - Israeli Tactical Training Academy)There are different theories as to why Israel adopted carrying on an empty chamber, all revolving around safety. One theory is based on the fact that many early IDF weapons were surplus WWII weapons from a wide array of different countries. Creating standard practices for a the military equipped with an assortment of weapons would be difficult, so Condition 3 carry was adopted to ensure safety and commonality across the board.Another theory is also based on the IDF's acquisition of surplus weapons. Many of these firearms were in well-used condition after making it through WWII. As a result, safety mechanisms were not guaranteed to function properly, so carrying on an empty chamber was implemented as a guaranteed safety. Israel's mandatory military service is the basis of the final theory. With all citizens having to serve a minimum of just 24-32 months, a lot has to be taught in a short period of time to turn civilians into soldiers. Mandating Condition 3 helps to prevent accidental discharges with these types of troops.Special IDF units are allowed to carry in Condition 1 (IDF)Israeli carry calls for the pistol to be drawn with one hand as the other hand grips the slide. As the weapon is presented and aimed, the slide is pulled back to chamber a round. Although it is slower than carrying with one in the chamber, the argument for Israeli carry is the emphasis of safety. However, it does require that the chambering/presentation motion be trained properly to ensure that a round is ready to fire when the weapon is aimed.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swveA-_1dusIt's worth noting that Israeli carry does not apply to rifle doctrine. Moreover, not all IDF units mandate carrying in Condition 3. Echoing the 1911 manual, units like special forces who are more likely to use their pistol in combat can be permitted to carry in Condition 1. In the end, carrying with one in the chamber or not comes down to training. Condition 1 requires trigger discipline, a quality firearm with good safeties, a holster that protects the trigger from being accidentally pulled, and training to disengage the thumb safety (if applicable). On the other hand, Condition 3 requires the shooter to add an action before they can employ their weapon.
While this is considered safer overall, it can mean the difference between life and death if not done correctly.

December 3 - lighting the candles on the menorah
“How sure are you we aren’t going to burn the Haus 2.0 down?”
Holster presses the tip of the match firmly against the rough side of the matchbox. “Pretty sure.”
Ransom hooks his chin over Holster’s shoulder. “I’d prefer ‘very sure’ or ‘certain,’” he confesses. Holster smells like unscented deodorant and laundry detergent and library. Holster always has a certain scent when he gets back from the library--not quite B.O. and not quite books and not quite crowded T train. A mishmash of all of them.
Holster strikes the match. “I did this every year we were in college.”
“True.” Ransom doesn’t move or step back as Holster lights the shamash. “Do you need to sing?”
“You probably know it too, by now,” Holster says. He leans back a tiny bit, relaxing into Ransom’s hold. “Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha'olam, asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Hanukkah.”
“Amen,” Ransom says.
Holster picks up the shamash and uses it to light the first candle. It’s pink. He tips the flaming wick of the shamash until the flame transfers. “Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha'olam, she’asah nisim l’avoteinu, b’yamim haheim bazman hazeh,” he sings.
Ransom releases him. “Amen. Can I light the second one?”
“Of course.” Holster watches as Ransom lifts the shamash and lights the second candle--green--with grave concentration. He places the shamash back in the center.
They stand together for a moment, watching the candles burn. Ransom can feel Holster’s warmth all along his left side. “I’m glad I didn’t go to med school right away,” he confesses.
The corner of Holster’s mouth curves up. “I’m glad you didn’t either.”
