Public Historians unite!!! I'm in the collaborative program with History and Museum Studies. :)
hi! if my program had an opportunity to do both museum studies and history, that’s what I would be doing! as it is, I’m getting my degree in public history and hoping to work specifically in museums. but that program sounds really cool!

jewishhenna replied to your post: also karen armstrong uses coleman barks’ rumi...
yeahh not surprised. she’s a very popular and talented writer, but she relies on secondary scholarship and she’s not exactly an academic. though i’ve met her and she’s very sweet! but yeah coleman barks is very popular with the “interfaith solidarity” “spiritual” “liberal” “mystic” crew… whyyyy…
YOU MET KAREN ARMSTRONG! Whaaaat, amazing. I mean, her heart is in the right place! But yeah, like, Coleman Barks keeps adding like....Jesus....which, yes, will make it more popular with people who are not Muslim, I guess?? but also it's really frustrating to get people to engage with another religion/culture via NOT THE ACTUAL ORIGINAL TEXT as in, are you saying that a literal translation could not touch people because we can't talk to actual Rumi, only Cool Rumi.

Jewishhenna -> darkhei-noam
New year, new profile, I suppose. I have officially decided to “retire” from henna, to make time and room for the many other projects, crafts, and disciplines that are calling me (”What’s that, dissertation dear? I’m coming!”). But I’m still here! And now I can continue posting whatever mishmash of content I have been posting in the past without worrying about the blog’s “theme.” If you followed me for the henna... Sorry.
Shabbat shalom, and shana tova, everyone!

Hello! I'm a mizrahi jew (part middle eastern) a bit disconnected from the culture and practices due to assimilation and other factors. I was wondering if you or any of your mods had any links or knowledge on the mizrahi approach to kabbalah because most of what I've found is very Ashkenazi specific and I've heard there's differences of the two. Thank you so much!
hey there! @jewishhenna & i are both Ashkenazi, but Noam might still have links/resources for you - unfortunately i think most of the books i’ve read have that Ashkenazi-normative bent, especially since Hasidism is what most folks think of first in regards to modern kabbalistic study (though people i run into outside Jewish communities are mostly only aware of Kabbalah Centre, which is controversial to say the least - that’s Madonna’s brand)
but i’d also be really interested to read more on the Mizrahi perspective - we can open this up to any other members or followers who have personal experience or know of good sources!
- Ezra

do you have any recommendations for jewish blogs in tumblr? I’m just getting into judaism and I’m looking for people to follow. Them being lgbt is also a big plus, i’m a trans lesbian and knowing more people like me would be cool.
Hiiii!
I think there was a Jewish group/blog for Jewish lesbians on tumblr, but I haven’t seen it active in awhile? There ARE a lot of folks on jumblr you might have something in common with - either being a wlw, or trans, or both! Jumblr please like or reblog this if you’re wanting more folks to connect to!
My general recs for Jewish tumblr are hard bc I always forget a ton of folks, but here’s some general blogs I follow (as opposed to personal ones?)
@jewish-privilege, @tikkunolamorgtfo, @vermiciousyid, @jewishvirtuallibrary, @jewishhenna, @jewish-education, @yidquotes, @jewishconvertthings, @transconverts
there’s more out there though!

Hi! Do you have any recommendations for learning Yiddish? My dad lost most of what he knew as he got older so I'm sort of on my own!
I don’t have links on hand, but look for a Learning Jewish Languages post by @jewishsocialist and @jewishhenna (I believe), it has some resources.

Rabbi Arragel in Miniature
@jewishhenna reblogged our barf dragons and said: “I’ve heard that on the first page there is a miniature showing Rabbi Arragel himself instructing the scribes and artists, but I’ve never been able to find a clear image of it.”
Well, we checked our Alba Bible and lo and behold, such a thing does exist! And here it is!
The commentary text that accompanies the facsimile includes a catalogue raisonné of the miniatures in the Alba Bible. The entry for this miniature (the 2nd in the manuscript) describes it thus:
Moses Arragel sits between Brother Arias de Encinas, Father Superior of the Monastery of Saint Francis of Toledo, to the right, and Don Vasco de Guzmán, Archdeacon of Toledo, to the left, with his back turned to the reader. Their forefingers are raised in instruction while he points towards them, discussing the work he is to write, in front of a book open on a desk. The Franciscan wears a doctoral hat and the brown habit of his Order. The Dominican wears a black cope and holds his doctoral hat in his hand.
So perhaps our dear Rabbi Arragel isn’t instructing so much as pointing to these two like, “I’ve got this.”

Anyone got some good micrography of one of the standard prayers? It seems like it’d be a cool teaching aid for the kids to have one, and I can do basically whatever basic prayer I want.  The v’ahavta would be best because we’ve touched it before, but the amidah or really any other standard thing would be good.
@jewishhenna and @libhobn seem like people who might have this.

omg would they dare??? i'm scared to find out.
I’ve seen it at least twice or thrice and every time it’s involved the destruction of the prayer rugs involved

Thanks for the encouragement friends! It’s good to get back in the classroom, and I’m really excited to work with all the other teaching fellows I missed over the summer. The trick now is to not lose momentum for, say, the next eight months!
