Everything goes back to normal.

That’s what Takato like to say, anyway.

Everything’s back to normal! with that excitement in his voice, like somehow that’s a good thing.

But things going back to the way they were before doesn’t mean they’ve gone back to normal.

And things aren’t back to the way they were before.  Not really.  If they were, Jeri wouldn’t catch Takato going back to the park every day, past the gated area where Guilmon once lived.  Shinjuku wouldn’t be under so much construction.  Her classmates wouldn’t still look at Takato with awe – or at her with pity.

They bully her, sometimes.  Not all of them, of course, but the ones who once lived in Shinjuku and had to be relocated elsewhere.  They blame her for all of this, once they hear her voice.  Sometimes, she speaks, and they freeze in terror.  She wasn’t the D-Reaper, but it used her voice, and so when she speaks, they hear it.  No wonder they’re terrified.

That terror, on occasion, leads to a different kind of bullying.  Some of it’s because they blame her, sure, but some of it is because she isn’t as terrifying as they imagine her to be and maybe, by going after her, they can feel like they could have gone after the D-Reaper, too.  It’s cathartic.

Like when Takato made Guilmon digivolve into that horrible monster to fight Beelzemon.

She understands all of this.

She understands, and she doesn’t say anything to the others.

Takato doesn’t notice – that’s how Jeri knows that things haven’t gone back to normal, that they never really will.  He’s focused on Guilmon, who is gone, so much that he misses Jeri, who is there.  Not just Jeri.  He misses a lot of things.  That’s the only way he could say that things are normal when they aren’t.

Henry, at least, never says that.  Not that Jeri spends time with him.  He caught the bullies once, while Jeri held her arms up as a defense between her head and the rest of them.  He made them stop.

It just made it worse when he wasn’t around.  Jeri thanks him anyway.  It was a nice thing, what he did.  He told her to ask for help, if she needs it, but she never does.

It’s hard to feel like she doesn’t deserve this.

It’s hard to feel like she doesn’t deserve their hatred.

It’s hard to feel like this isn’t all her fault.

Rika reaches out – not normal, before everything, which means things definitely aren’t the way they were before – and spending time with her feels a little bit better.  There’s no pressure, no expectation, no force to say that things are the way they’ve always been.

More than that, it feels like Rika actually sees her.

Maybe it’s because the first time they meet, Rika gives her a warm hug and notices how Jeri winces when she does.  She suspects, maybe, what Jeri isn’t saying, but….

Jeri doesn’t want to talk about all of that.  She wants to talk about happy things, because they’re all going through something painful right now.  They’re all grieving.  And she doesn’t want to pile on top of that.

Rika and Henry and Takato are all international heroes.

And Jeri….

Jeri walks to Shinjuku.

Often, she does this.

She wants to see the wreckage she caused.

Of course, she didn’t cause it.  Not really.  The D-Reaper did, pulling on her pain and loneliness and grief and twisting it into something—

She didn’t cause it, but she still feels like she caused it, and sometimes, when the construction workers see her, they startle.

She avoids the construction workers as much as she can, but sometimes it feels like they’re everywhere.  Like ants.  Like—

Jeri walks to Shinjuku, and she sits on a bridge, and she hangs her legs through the fence, and she swings her legs this way and that, and she looks down on Shinjuku and she thinks about how it was and how it won’t be again – because even when the construction is over, it’ll be new and wonderful and different – and how things change even though no one wants to believe they do.

She thinks about how Takato is refusing to acknowledge his loss.

Takato is in denial and bargaining all at once, and Jeri wavers around acceptance most days, when she isn’t deep in her own depression.

Rika might be the closest to acceptance.  She said, once, that it was like when her dad left.  Different, but the same.

Henry….

Jeri doesn’t spend enough time with Henry to know.

Confessions, but Not By Me

Prompt - Confessions

“Come on Jian”, Terriermon said.

Jian didn’t glance at Terriermon. Terriermon, annoyed that Jian wasn’t paying attention to him, jumped down from Jian’s head and stood in front of Jian.

Terriermon crossed his tiny arms over his chest. What was Terriermon so passionate about, it was about Jian’s crush. Yes, Jian had a crush on someone named Y/n. Jian didn’t even know how Terriermon found out but Jian wanted to deck the person that told him.

It was annoying because Terriermon kept trying to get Jian to confess. Jian didn’t want to confess. What if you didn’t like Jian back? That would be a problem because you were a part of the team.

Jian worked with you and saw you almost every day. So Jian didn’t confess, but Terriermon was determined to change Jian’s mind. “No Terriermon, how many times do I have to say it”, Jian walked past Terriermon.

Terriermon ran to Jian and jumped back on his head. “But what would be so wrong with confessing?” Terriermon asked. Jian sighed but kept walking.

Jian knew what was wrong, too many things. “I just don’t want to, and that’s reason enough now drop it”, Jian sneered the last part. That was enough for Terriermon to stop talking.

But Terriermon had a plan.

You were walking through the forest.

You were just going on a walk to clear your head and think. That’s when you heard something behind you. You immediately turned around and put your guard up.

You thought it was a Digimon so you looked around. But when you looked up you relaxed. “Hey Terriermon”, you said as you opened your arms. Terriermon leaped out of the tree and into your arms.

“Hey Y/n”, Terriermon said as he walked to your head. “Is Jian here?” You asked while looking around. “No he’s too chicken to do this”, that confused you.

“To chicken to do what?” You asked before continuing your walk. “To tell you that he likes you”, that made you stop walking. A blush rose to your face as you glanced up at Terriermon.

“He what?” You asked. Maybe you heard wrong? Terriermon moved down to your shoulder and looked at you. “Jian likes you, but he won’t tell you. I don’t know why.

Come to think of it, I don't know why you don’t know. Jian acts weird around you”. You stopped listening when Terriermon said ‘Jian likes you’. Truth was that you also had a crush on Jian.

But he liked you back?

How did Terriermon know?

Jian is his tamer. You sighed and started walking. “You sure?” You asked Terriermon, maybe he was just trying to pull a prank. “Yup I’m sure, now all you have to do is Tell Jian that you like him since He’s too chicken to do it”, you laughed.

So Terriermon was right.

You smiled and continued walking. “Terriermon!” You sighed as your walk was interrupted again. You turned around though, you knew that voice. “Hey Jian!” You yelled and waved your hand at the blue haired down that was down the path.

Jian looked over at you and started to run towards you. “Hey Y/n, There you are Terriermon”, Terriermon jumped from your shoulder to Jian’s. “What have I told you about running off”, Jian said sternly.

“I had to Jian. I had to do what you wouldn’t”, Jian blushed at that and suddenly looked really scared. Jian wouldn’t look you in the eye. You smiled and glanced at Terriermon.

Terriermon looked mischievous and had a smile on his face. “I’ll leave you to it!” Terriermon yelled and jumped back into the trees. “Terriermon!” Jian yelled at the trees.

You let out a little laugh and walked closer to Jian. Jian looked at you but you could tell he was nervous. “So a little Digimon told me that you have a crush on me”, you had no idea where the confidence was coming from, but you liked it.

Jian blushed more, “that little”, You shushed Jian. “It’s fine, I like you too”, Jian looked at you shocked. You laughed. Jian was cute when he was blushing. You reached down and took his hand.

“How about I take you on a date?” You asked. Jian looked at you with a smile, “Sure”. You turned back around and continued your walk with Jian by your side.

A Tamers Halloween 🎃

Why it is too late for a Digimon Tamers sequel

Today marks the 24th anniversary for Digimon Tamers and I want to talk about one of those notions, that I see floating around the Digimon Fandom the most: "We want something like tri./Kizuna/Beginning for Digimon Tamers."

I kinda get the notion. After all, Tamers is easily the best written of the seasons. Its writing being quite tight, and the focus of the three main characters making it quite better paced than the other seasons. And while I do not loathe filler episodes these days as much as I used to, I absolutely appreciate how few filler episodes thise show has.

However, I feel that all in all, it just is too late to make a sequel to Digimon Tamers. After all, it has been 23 years now since that show ended. And something that I am fearing is that for the most part making a sequel to it would no longer work for several reasons.

Reason 1: Konaka himself, who originally wrote the show, is just no longer in a good mental place. I will not go too much into details, but there has been a lot of stuff that happened in the last 10 years that made him suffer from mental health issues. If you remember that audio live drama... Yeah, that is partly the place where this came from.

Now, you might ask: "So what? There are other authors, right?" Which brings me to the next issue.

Reason 2: Digimon Tamers has been a fairly Hard SciFi entry for Digimon, which usually tends to balance on the line between Scifi and Fantasy. And I sadly do not have a lot of trust in most other writers who might get handed a potential sequel OVA or movie to do this SciFi-aspects justice. And frankly, a Tamers' sequel that would not do the SciFi stuff would miss the certain something.

Reason 3: Now of course, if you have seen the Adventure-Sequel stuff, you will know that it too tried to tackle a lot of these more high concept conflicts. tri. had the entire Demiurge, Homeostasis thing going, Kizuna the entire Neverland thing, and The Beginning was basically retconning the epilogue centrally. (No matter if Kakudo says different. Because The Beginning definitely went: "Yeah, actually, everyone having their own Digimon partner would be a shit idea.") And yes, Tamers is kinda calling for high concept stuff as well - but the issue is that those high concepts would need a bit more SciFi rooting. I wrote about this before: Yeah, Tamers could easily go into Simulation Theory or something like that. But it would need to be done right. And given how torn the fandom is about anything in regards to the Adventure sequels... Uuuuhm, I don't think those succeeded.

Reason 4: It has been almost 25 years since we got any updates on that timeline. We have not heard anything from the Tamers in a while. In comparison, we got tri. 10 years ago already, priming folks for more Adventure/02 stuff. Which not only makes me wonder if people would show up enough for this, but also... Well, if the actors all showed up. Remember, while Nozawa Masako did some later Voice Work for Digimon, she absolutely did not want to do the work for Guilmon in the Xros Hunters episodes. Also, she is really old, and frnakly might die any time. And sure, you can probably recast, but would people accept it?

Reason 5: Digimon Adventure tri. sucked, and it had lore to work with that was way less complex than that of Digimon Tamers. (Look, even if you like Adventure/02 more than Tamers, you gotta admit that it was a lot more simple in regards to plot and worldbuilding, given it was a very standard Chosen One Hero's Journey.) So, chances are in general, that it would be really hard to write something that would work as a sequel here.

And yes, there are other reasons. Given how few people do right by Ruki in fanwork, I kinda feel like official media also would struggle with it. (I mean, Konaka did in the later audio plays.) I talked about this before. The entire thing about Ruki is that her disdain for "girly things" comes from her struggling with the relationship with her mother. While I do not see her become a girly girl, I also think it absolutely misses the point of her character to have her become a super hardcore masculine adult women.

And frankly, before I have to deal with a sequel-OVA that goes into the same non-sense as tri., I would rather not have a sequel at all.

And yes, I personally will openly admit, that I also just... Look, I spent those nearly 25 years since the show ended coming up with a whole bunch of headcanons (Ao3 Link) of what is going to happen to these characters and this world. And I think so did a lot of others. And frankly, I never appreciated works that after decades went: "Yeah, actually, new canon!"

The same frankly goes for Frontier and Savers as well. While neither of them go quite as high concept as Tamers - removing one of the points - I also would not want to see something that went off the rails with them. With Frontier having the additional challenge, that it is probably the season that has the most definite ending, with the kids giving up the Digivices and what not. While I would argue that it might be one of the more interesting concepts for a sequel (I mean, there are four spirits that never have been assigned), it is also the most limied, given how closed in of itself the plot was.

Savers of course is another thing. Because it has the big difference of Masaru ending the series in the Digital World, which would at least perfectly work as a hook for a movie or anything along those lines. While the general cautions still apply, this is probably the one thing I could see working the most.

Generally though... I think actually for either series I would prefer to just get a couple of shorts that are not that heavy in plot and more heavy on characters. We got those - obviously - for Adventure/02, but for no other season. And yeah, I think just 5 minutes shorts maybe published online... Maybe 5 or so for in fact every season since 02? That would be kinda nice. And I think that could work very well.
